Originally from the area now known as Carmarthenshire, the Prewett family is able to trace back their family to the Roman conquest of Wales, whether the family was originally Roman or Demetae has been lost to time. The Prewett name was first used in the mid 9th century, and has remained an unbroken line of pure-blooded wizards and witches ever since.

In 1497, after a an accident decimated the Prewett family, leaving only one young father, Gareth Prewett, and his son, Pedr, to carry on the Prewett line, Gareth relocated to Fisherton Delamere in Wiltshire. Not unaccustomed to being among the elite of Muggle and Wizard society, as the two were still one and the same at the upper levels at the time, Pedr found a friend in a young William Paulet. The two were inseparable for much of the lives, with Pedr often using magic to help his friend in his political pursuits. In late 1550, William Paulet, now Earl of Wiltshire gave Pedr, and the quickly growing Prewett family, a manor and estates near Westbury. The Prewett’s remained close to the Paulet’s, providing magical services to the muggle family and while the muggle family enlarged the Prewett estates several times, until the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy was passed in 1692. Over the centuries several squibs have married into the Paulet family, and one muggleborn Paulet married into the Prewett family.

The Prewett family has been involved in Wizarding politics for as long as Wizards have had separate political bodies. There have been two Prewett’s in the Wizengamot since the founding of the Ministry of Magic, and a Prewett had sat on the Wizard’s council for nearly three centuries prior to that. The Prewett’s have been a ministry family since then, with many members of the family working in various departments. There have been two Prewett Ministers for Magic, one Prewett Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards, three Chief Warlocks of the Wizengamot and countless department heads since the creation of the Ministry of Magic.
