Some know them as aristocrats. Some know them as socialites. Some know them as investors. The better term might be loan sharks (although nothing has been proven connecting them to their illegal ventures).
Long ago, Éadaoin O'Doherty managed to trick a Leprechaun out of some of its hair and some real gold. A special wand was commissioned using the hair as core. The O'Doherty clan has built its power and fortune from this wand. However, the angered Leprechaun cursed the family disposition. The O'Dohertys are infamous for their vile attitudes, variably seen in their public pretenses.
The ancestral home is Doherty Manor somewhere in Donegal County, just above Northern Ireland. Partially from genuine security and partially from plain paranoia, the O'Dohertys are not on the Floo Network and have taken precautions that makes the mansion difficult to find unless invited. The the three generations living there are waited upon by a family of three house elves, Dollop and Dimple and their son Dingy. The house elves handle all menial labor from cleaning to pressing wine for the Donegal elf pressed wine label, one of the family's many holdings.
The O'Dohertys pride themselves on being purebloods, although their bloodline may be suspect. The family wand and power is preferably passed through first born sons (no matter what). So although Casey is halfblood because his father married a muggle to spite his parents, Casey is being groomed as the next family heir.
The O'Dohertys will never enter a business venture unless they can make a profit. Although they are one of the five richest families in magical Europe they distrust goblins so almost half of the fortune sits around the manor in gigantic piles (used for bowling down the West Hall). Although the family has never produced a Death Eater they may have been financially supportive of some of Voldemort's efforts. Martin's work as a lawyer and lobbyist has been used to increase their political influence though the family values financial and magical power the most. Nearly the whole family has been in Slytherin (save Aunt Suanach, who was in Hufflepuff for five years).
Casey's mother, Darla, once lived under neglect at the manor, forgotten in an attic room where only the house elves cared for her. Casey has secretly moved her to a cottage in Hogsmeade. Also, after a venture in the forbidden forest a runt acromantula now occupies a bricked off section of the Doherty Manor wine cellar.
