Briar Cavanaugh

From Absit Omen Lexicon

Briar middle child of Catherine and Kevin. The typical tomboy is not a fan of her family or the Cavanaugh legacy. The only thing she does seemed to be interested in when it comes to family is their pureblood connection to the Wentworth clan, though not his favourite Briar was rather close with her grandfather. She hates her father and all werewolves and secretly wishes he had died with honour alongside their mother instead of letting himself become a monster - a view she hasn't shared with either of her siblings. Although a happy and good humored girl, Briar holds a lot of jealousy and resentment towards her family.

Appearance

Although Briar has a considerably small frame, standing at only 5'4" inches she's lean with defined muscles and takes considerable care of her body. She sports the trademark blonde hair and ice blue eyes of the Wentworth family and looks rather similar to her older sister Berkeley.

Briar enjoys a casual yet trendy style of dress when not in uniform and leans more towards the comfort of muggle clothing than high fashion Wizarding couture that her cousins are known for. She has since grown out of her tomboy phase that streaked through her early teenage years and has developed a more feminine side that belies her brusque nature.

Though not a model or an actress nor a socialite like those she grew up around Briar is aware that she is considered attractive. She doesn't mind flaunting this in certain circumstances if it gets her what she wants.

Personality

Briar couldn't be more opposite of her sister if she tried. Where Berkeley is quiet and withdrawn, Briar is outspoken and blunt. She's strong willed though does have a chip on her shoulder so to speak. Early on many of the Wentworth women were groomed to be perfect ladies, the ideal wife and a member of high society. Although Briar was given all the same lessons in etiquette as her cousins, very little was expected of her as "Cavanaugh's don't make good wives"

Briar is a good friend and companion but she can be quick to anger and jealousy. She has deep rooted resentment towards her father and her cousins her own age. She grew up knowing that others were favoured over her. Briar loved her Grandfather but knew he preferred her cousin Cadance. She was often told her brash nature and strong will wasn't ladylike. Likewise she hated her father for the weak willed recluse he became after contracting Lycanthropy and has a disdain for those with the affliction - one of very few opinions she has kept to herself.

Despite her flaws and shortcomings, Briar has a great sense of humor and once she's comfortable with someone she can be great company and a loyal friend. She's a dedicated worker and is striving to do justice by her family and become the best Auror she can.

History

Briar was the second child born to career Aurors Catherine and Kevin Cavanaugh, Nine years after her sister. Her parents were hard working and did their best to spend time with their children but more often than not Briar was raised by Nannies and Tutors alongside her cousins around her age. By the time that Briar could walk and talk her sister was off to Hogwarts and the pair didn't really have much of a relationship. On the other hand Briar was rather close with her younger brother Kyson as there was only two years between them.

When Briar was Five, the Second Wizarding War had come to a head with the Battle of Hogwarts. She was too young to really understand the weight of the war, but old enough to know that something was wrong. She had spent time overseas in Australia with family while most of the War waged. When she finally came back home, everything was different.

Briar's mother, grandmother and several uncles died during the final days of the war and her father had become a shadow of himself. Kyson was taken in by their Aunt Sheridan and he soon became more like a son to her than a brother to Briar. Briar herself was taken in by her Grandfather. Although she still saw her father periodically he was not the man she had once known and she started to prefer not being around him.

Not long after Briar began her 'Lady Lessons' alongside her female cousins as the next generation of Wentworth women were groomed as future wives and socialites. Many of Briar's jealousy and resentment grew from these days as it was obvious that even though she practically lived in his manor with him Arathorn preferred her cousin Cadance. She was never truly scolded for not being ladylike and it seemed as though her tutors never took her efforts seriously. More than once Briar heard the phrase "Cavanaugh's don't make good wives"

This phrase haunted her for years and left her feeling lost and angry. It was expected of her to become an Auror like her mother and nearly everyone in her father's family but with Kevin having become reclusive she had lost her ties to that side of her family and felt rejected by the family she did have.

Once she started to attend Hogwarts Briar's anger dissipated some as she was no longer exposed to the Tutors and Ladies that looked down on her. She started to develop long lasting relationships and did well in her studies. For the first time she felt the shadow of her older sister who had long since graduated. Many of her Professors early on hoped that Briar would be just as studious as Berkeley had been. Though she was no where near the level of her sister she did well in her own right.

She tried Quidditch in her third year but felt the sport wasn't really for her, despite having made a good beater. She soon fell in love with Dueling and continued to be a part of the Dueling Club for the rest of her years at Hogwarts.

Briar did well at school, excelling at Transfiguration and Defense Against the Dark Arts. She was the only one of her wider family not to take Care of Magical Creatures, instead taking Ancient Runes and Arithmancy as her electives.

During Briar's final year of Hogwarts she seemed determined to break free of any expectations put upon her by her family. Neither did she want to embrace the Wentworth Family Business nor the Cavanaugh Legacy of Aurors. However all that changed when she learned of her Grandfather's death. Much like her early childhood days Briar lived at her Grandfather's manor when not at school, alongside her cousin Xavier, occasionally crashing at her sister's place with her little brother - only ever going home to Kevin during important Holidays. She had taken the news of his death harder than many of her cousins had and soon after shocked everyone by applying to join the Auror Corps.

After Graduation Briar joined her sister at the Ministry becoming an Auror Trainee, something most never thought she would actually do or ever want to do.
