Career

As the oldest of Cyrus Howell’s sons, Arviragus was under a lot of pressure from the very beginning, until he found himself heading the lot of them as Head of the International Magical Office of Law. He had to do well in school, land a good job in a respectable profession, marry well—make something of himself. And so, deciding to follow his honored father’s footsteps, the young man went into law.

Once he passed the bar, he began working for the Ministry as a lawyer, familiarizing himself with the complexities of magical law until he found himself working in the Office of International Magical Law, just as his father had.

Marriage

Of course, he still had to marry, and so in time he came to an delicate understanding with a co-worker, Sofia Incandenza, a witch of different ambitions but similar drive. Eventually they married in the spring of 1965, and had two sons – Edmund Howell and Tybalt Howell – both of whom they had high expectations for.

But these dreams were to be dashed. Although both sons had been Sorted into Slytherin (a promising sign, to be sure), they had very different ideas of ‘doing well’, as well as the idea of work itself. Neither seemed concerned about strong work ethics or respectability, much to Arviragus’ dismay, except easy money, luxury, and instant gratification. They were wastrels, disgraces to the Howell name.

Then Tybalt married, and for a while it seemed at least one of them was on the right track; Marceline Biała-Slant was a halfblood, but then so had been Cyrus, and anyway she was from respectable (if foreign) stock. As the sole heiress she was plenty wealthy, but as a witch she was quite remarkable, too. Charming, witty, and quite brilliant at potions, she was a partner in a lucrative business venture. In time, the couple produced a daughter.

Unfortunately, not even this would last, either. Almost ten years later the marriage fell apart, Tybalt leaving for parts unknown and Marceline – regrettably – turned to her father, the cantankerous, dubiously named Muggle Eamon Slant, and ceased contact completely. It would be years until they saw their granddaughter again, and by then the damage was already done: she was virtually a Muggleborn, but more importantly was largely indifferent toward any gesture of reconciliation. These days things are better, but progress is slow, for obvious reasons.

Present

A traditionalist at heart, Arviragus has been slow to accept new things such as foreign wands and equal rights for nonhumans, particularly werewolves. But he knows which way the wind is blowing, and as such he is careful to keep his opinions faultlessly diplomatic.
