Aoide Shacklebolt

From Absit Omen Lexicon

Daughter of Nadine Pinn and Rex Shacklebolt.

Appearance

Aoide hopes that she will grow up to be as tall as her dad. Her mum isn’t short by any stretch, but Rex is six foot tall and Aoide would very much like to be tall. She is already tall for her age, and lean, so she feels she’s in for a chance! Aoide leads an active lifestyle, unafraid to tear around after her relations and friends to play games of tag, or balance on a broomstick or the end of a bed. Growing up in Godric’s Hollow was fairly safe to go out and about to play as a child.

Aoide’s hair is much like her mother’s, natural and voluminous. Aoide much prefers to not pin it down if she can, though she is experimenting with techniques and potions ahead of being able to use hair charms. Her eyes are a dark brown.

Her fashion sense is influenced by her parents at present, with colours. Although both her parents are magical and working in government, Aoide has strongly persuaded them to allow her outfits to be muggle influenced. She’s often found in jeans, t-shirts, jumpers and rarely in proper wizarding robes unless required. However, her Hogwarts uniform will not be a burden, but be worn proudly. She was taught to sew in her younger years, but hasn’t yet been able to construct a whole piece of clothing, though it is something she’d like to do in the future. She’s not yet quite got the hang of heels, though she has a good sense of balance, she takes a long stride and forgets.

Her speaking voice is lower pitched and louder than many of her classmates, and she has inherited her mother’s truly ridiculous and highly infectious laugh, only on Aoide it suits her personality so much better.

Wand

It is said that a laurel wand cannot perform a dishonourable act, although in the quest for glory (a not uncommon goal for those best suited to these wands), laurel wands have been known to perform powerful and sometimes lethal magic. Laurel wands are sometimes called fickle, but this is unfair; the laurel wand is unable to tolerate laziness in a possessor, and it is in such conditions that it is most easily and willingly won away.

Otherwise, it will cleave happily to its first match forever, and indeed has the unusual and engaging attribute of issuing a spontaneous lightning strike if another witch or wizard attempts to steal it.

Personality

Aoide is unafraid of hard work. She has been brought up to do the chores, help family, neighbours, look after family cats, do her homework. He household has been somewhat strict, but loving. They are a principled and disciplined family. No sweets until vegetables are eaten and the washing up is done. When you’re not yet allowed to use magic it has taught Aoide patience.

As a student, Aoide is able to manage her work, and also help her classmates remember deadlines and equipment to bring to lessons. She is considered the person to ask, and her classmates have confidence in her organisation and accidental leadership for admin. Aoide, meanwhile has not really realised this, but takes joy in having more classmates talk to her.

Whereas some students might dislike group or partner work in lessons, Aoide is always secretly pleased. She feels more confident with a pal to figure things out with when she’s learning. While Aoide does not shy away from talking to adults, and can speak to them in a very adult way as her mother has taught her, she is intimidated by some of the staff at school.

As time wears on, Aoide is one to coordinate others to organise surprise birthday parties, birthday cards from housemates and try to organise meeting up in the holidays. She is not one to leave people out, especially if she observes someone is being left out of the friendship group. She is likely to attempt to befriend them, and will try more than once until she admits defeat with several knockbacks.

Revenge doesn’t really feature in Aoide’s mind by nature, but it wouldn’t stop her being influenced to use her discipline and predisposition to organise people to help with revenge. However, she can be too well meaning, and interfere when her involvement is not welcome, or unnecessary. To some of her classmates she is probably the busybody who doesn’t know when to stop trying to help.

When Aoide feels tired of being about people she likes to doodle, read books, sing along to songs on the wireless and organise her trunk. If the world feels out of control, she will often organise her trunk or her area of the dormitory. Sometimes she will vanish away to do this if someone has taken her kind and well-meaning nature to their advantage.

It would be the end of the world (temporarily at least) if Aoide were to be shunned by her peers and she would retract and isolate herself suddenly. Aoide is a quiet worrier. She won’t let it appear outwards until it has bottled up so much it spills out in a meltdown. She’ll worry small stuff out of proportion, like a mishandled comment, or a lack of timely letter from home. Her mother has always brought her up to handle her own problems where possible, to promote independence, but at Aoide’s age sometimes she doesn’t know how and it’s overwhelming. She feels she is a failure if she seeks help, which is self-destructive. Academic achievement is also a bit pressure point.

Aoide will also feel terribly responsible if two good friends fall out, and feel it is her fault or responsibility to fix it. At these times, she really misses the physical contact of her parents and a good long hug can make a massive amount of difference.

Aoide’s hardworking, patient, thoughtful personality makes her an easy fit for Hufflepuff. She is not slyly ambitious, witty and studious, or courageous for the other houses, and becoming a badger is a huge relief for her. It is her dad’s house too and that makes her very proud.

History

2000-2012

Aoide is the daughter of Nadine Pinn and Rex Shacklebolt, born in the first month of the new century. She is the second daughter of Nadine, and the only child of Rex Shacklebolt. Her parents have never married, but have lived together and are as good as married. Aoide has taken her father’s surname, and her mother’s surname for a middle name.

Aoide has an older half sister, Ariadne Gamp, from her mother’s young marriage to Orion Gamp. When Aoide arrived, Ariadne was seven, so the sisters only grew up together really for the first three or so years of Aoide’s life. But with Aoide’s arrival, Ariadne elected to live more with her father, so generally the sisters have grown up independent of each other. For this reason, and their age gap, they are not as close as other siblings might be. Aoide holds nothing strongly against Ariadne, but has always felt Ariadne dislikes her for moving away when she was born. Aoide is much closer to Nadine, their mother, than Ariadne is, and Aoide has witnessed the fallings out between her older sister and their mother in recent years.

Aoide is however very close to her dad, who of the two parents is the more loving and traditional father figure. As Aoide’s mother opted for auror training early on in Aoide’s life (being Nadine’s lifelong dream to be an auror), Rex took over gender stereotypical roles in the family home. His job was more flexible, even if he had to compromise with Level 5 and rush through the international floo on numerous occasions. Father and daughter would often eat dinner alone, which he cooked, and he would read bedtime stories. Nadine would be the one kissing her sleepy daughter first thing in the morning or last thing at night as she juggled long auror shifts. Aoide is more likely to speak to her dad about problems, or seek a hug from him, though as her teenage years approach, this may shift.

Aoide’s primary school learning was under the guide of Lyra Gamp at the Gamp’s House in Godric’s Hollow, with other young wix children. She got to know several of her future classmates there under Mrs Gamp’s tutelage. Nadine had always felt Ariadne benefitted from her time there, as Nadine had when she was young, and although Lyra is Nadine’s former mother-in-law, she respects her teaching ability and trusted her to get the best out of Aoide ahead of Hogwarts.

Although Lyra was Ariadne’s true paternal grandmother, Aoide was never considered anything to the Gamps as she is no blood or by marriage relation. Their relationship with Nadine was always a little tentative as years went on, and with the revelations of the terrible dark research Lyra and her husband (a disgraced and former Head Unspeakable) Aoide has found it is a risky business to even mention her time learning with the Gamps, such is Nadine’s horror at what they did. Rightly so, Aoide feels, having lost her cousin Moses. Aoide has a recurring nightmare about Lyra Gamp coming to get her as a result of it all. She has not seen her sister’s paternal family at all since it happened.

2013-2017

Aoide has grown both physically and mentally during her time in Hufflepuff. She is now in her final year, and final two terms of her school career and looking making plans for the future. While she was once a tall second year, she is now nearly a grown woman. Her skills with a broom have blossomed, not only due to her close friendship with Hufflepuff Quidditch Captain, Ivy Abbott.

She has managed to negotiate well with her parents. Her mother, an auror, has always been strict and controlling, though always framing it out of love and concern for the risks in the world. As such, Aoide has always found following rules easy, because it has been part of her upbringing. She was a natural choice for a prefect, despite never seeing herself as leadership material. Her dormitory space is still meticulously tidy.

Aoide’s periphery friends have changed quite a bit during the time but her friendship with Ivy has remained strong, to her relief. She is still anxious and will bottle things up, but she is getting better at sharing her worries and reasoning through them.

Throughout her years she has remained a member of SAWS, though the group has now more officially linked with the Werewolf Alliance. If asked, Aoide would describe herself as ‘one of the leaders’ and see it as a shared responsibility.

The student group continue to demonstrate kindness and understanding towards those afflicted with lycanthropy and support the Alliance’s targets and declarations. This is one element she has tended to keep quiet during the holidays around her mother, who doesn’t see it quite the same way and worries about activism. Her father, meanwhile, is much more reasonable.

Seventh Year

She is happy she gets to study Creatures and Muggle Studies with Ivy. Aoide also plays on the quidditch team for Hufflepuff when she can, but is very accepting if others are picked over her. She relishes being part of the team.

Aoide is considering a career to do with being or beast rights. She did a stint in the Being Division offices during the summer between sixth and seventh year. The year before she shadowed her father in the law offices on Level Five.
