Alvis Norling is the half-blood only child of two booksellers. His ancestors feature long lines of artificers and magical craftsmen on either side of the family. With years of their lectures under his belt, Alvis has displayed an early talent for invention and design, to the point where he can be considered a prodigy. He also possesses a unique, innate talent for Legillimency. He was a president of the Astronomy Club during his time at Hogwarts.
Special Ability: Legilimency
A botched memory charm performed on Alvis as a young child damaged his growing mind in such as a way that he never developed the natural defenses needed to keep out the intrusive thoughts off others. As this left his mind too open for its own good, it gradually developed a substitute defense in the form of wandless, primarily empathetic legilimency.
Alvis's talents in this field primarily lie in skimming the surface thoughts and emotions of those around him -- "as if every mind that passes (him) has a poorly tuned wireless."[1] These thoughts are easiest to pick up if they're directed "at" him, ie, are about him or coming from the minds of people currently focused on him in some way.
Making eye contact with an individual allows for a slightly deeper read of that person's mind, though it never gets quite as extensive as when the spell is used properly with a wand. Meditation, such as that used to "open the Inner Eye" in Divination, has been known to cast the "net" of his power considerably wider.[2]
When angered -- which is, fortunately, extremely rare -- Alvis has been known to "lash out" with his power, implanting silent thoughts into another person's mind.[3]
While his legilimency talent is undeniable, it's important to note that Alvis is completely unable to use occlumency in any form. Using his talent too extensively or obviously therefore puts him at considerable risk, as he would be unable to defend against a counter-attack. This weakness also leaves him permanently susceptible to mind-altering spells such as the Imperius Curse.
History
Alvis was born in Adderley Village, Shropshire, in 1994. The son of two local booksellers -- one wizard, one muggle -- Alvis was raised in a lovely, tight-knit community of mostly retired Ministry workers and the attendants of a local rectory.
At age six, Alvis stumbled upon wizarding criminal Darius Gabor, splinched and bleeding in the woods behind the Norling house. Alvis patched the man up and allowed him to hide in an old work-shed for the two weeks it took for a full recovery. When his pursuers caught up, Darius fled and took Alvis with him as a potential hostage. Alvis returned home three days later with his memory of the previous month almost completely wiped. He's been suffering from the results of this clumsy memory charm ever since.
Alvis was home-schooled by his parents and thus has always had trouble making friends his own age. An early friendship with Ambrose Pepper -- the son of an old schoolmate of Alvis's father -- ended badly, resulting in a strained relationship that continues to be acidic to this day.
Just before he received his Hogwarts letter, Alvis saw a muggle documentary on the Apollo program, and was instantly smitten. Ever since, he's been obsessed with the stars, their meaning, and the magical potential of reaching other planets. His dream is to one day put a wizard on the moon.
During his first year at school he was very shy and didn't make many friends, but he's been starting to open up a bit more and is getting to know the members of the other houses, such as Casey O'Doherty. He even briefly dated a few girls in his year, Zoe Torret and Moira McBoid. Following a head injury, a body swap, and a few close conversations with the school staff, Alvis has been made aware of his legilimens "talent" and is taking his first steps towards learning how to control it.
Present Day
Following his graduation from Hogwarts, Alvis sought a traditional apprenticeship with another artificer. He still returns home to Two-Story Books to assist his family. In 2015 he co-founded Phaëthon Artifice with Casey O'Doherty, as the two remain business partners and confidants. Besides the Runic Vambrace he created during their time at Hogwarts, he often dreams up new kinds of magical gadgets. He's ostensibly unaware of what Casey gets up to off the books but he'd rather keep his friend protected as they test innovations.
Note: Gemini has allowed for Alvis to be a reference NPC in the current setting. Contact a Curator or Will (author of Casey O'Doherty) for questions.
