Physical Description:
Dressed in pinstripe formal robes, tie with pin, he was the epitome of business.
Wolfgang's face is angular, his pale eyes appear to bulge for their wideness and are framed in critical, frequently dropped eyebrows. His forehead is long, and his face is narrow, with a long protruding nose from the middle. It seems like someone has stretched his face to fit its length.
Not a conventionally handsome man, Wolfgang's features are expressive, swinging from disapproval and disdain to mockery and humour so quickly it stings. New staff in and around his office learn quickly which expressions to avoid and which provide a momentary safe opportunity to talk to him favourably. The majority of the time he appears to be in a state of mild anger.
His greying hair was once brown, lightly curled if left to grow and he has refused point blank throughout his life to grow it any longer - taking great pride in his appearance, his hair is trimmed regularly. The fact his son grows his longer irritates Wolfgang, who believes a smart close cut is more fitting of a professional man.
At 6ft tall, and stringy, Wolfgang looks continually hungry and agitated, especially as he rarely gets out of a suit or formal robes. The sight of him in anything but a suit is rare, and he's one to even wear pyjamas for bed, generally reserved in the thought of exposing his body. The only person he's happy to show it to is his wife, Camille, and even then, he's somewhat self conscious.
Personality Description:
Wolfgang could be considered a workaholic. Certainly he spends long hours at work, pouring over figures, evaluating decisions, share prices and international trade values. The bank has been his professor and his calling since he was at school, and is of great importance to him. He met his wife there, and the house he had in Germany was loaned from there too - even the paintings within it are from the collection. It was be hard to part the two. When he did take a rare holiday, he was relieved to be back. Since their 'divorce' (Wolfgang and the Chrysopoeia, that is) he's been rather less fond of the bank, and more invested in ensuring Gringotts destroys them.
The ever efficient assistant,
she was ten years Camille's younger, and the way Wolfgang spoke to her made Camille a little jealous. When this awful Tetra-Wizard Tournament had been about to start, she frequently got notes in this very handwriting explaining that Wolfgang would be late back to their home.
Wolfgang is critical, to the point of being rude. The junior staff think he's awful to work for, but generally there is huge respect for Wolfgang and his professional decisions as he is generally irritatingly correct and acute in his decisions. In his last job, he kept a secretary, respecting her work and knowledge more than other staff, she escapes some of his extreme temper until she does make a mistake. He spoke to her in a way that made his wife Camille, jealous.
In his new role he doesn't have a secretary, but still has some managerial control. His temper still flares but the stuffing has been knocked out of him and he is yet to find his firm feet.
Wolfgang sat very well amongst many higher classes of wizard, able to discuss business, politics and miscellany. His insider knowledge and observation was a sought after talent within social circles. He liked to use his influence particularly amongst the Durmstrang Governors at meetings, keeping a firm handle on the school's finances. Since his move to the UK he has had to call on new associations, some of which are in the criminal world, to try and bolster his social standing, and also secure his own finances which took a hit.
Intelligent, well read and with huge mental capability to compute numbers, Wolfgang can appear to outsiders that he is a cold, calculating man, and to the greatest extent he is. He makes judgements on others based on their heritage, romantic decisions, financial status, opinions on Muggles, opinions on half breeds and on sexuality. Personally, he is rather close minded, somewhat fearful of Muggles being intellectually inferior, and disbelieving in anything but a heterosexual relationship.
Business, the family pleasantries once again cast aside, both mixed together when Wolfgang was involved. For however unpleasant he could be, he was rather useful at times like this. Houses, wills, they were just money to him.
However, his love for Camille, his wife, and colleague (though in a different section, Camille deals with personal banking) is unconditional. He will go to the ends of the earth to protect her, and keep her. But he won't tolerate her having a cat. He draws the line there.
As a father, Wolfgang poured hours into Johann, their only son, teaching him as much a he could before Durmstrang and raising him to be inquisitive and broad minded. It worked very well, and Wolfgang was fiercely proud of their son as he went through school. He accepted he had to go and travel, which was somewhat the family tradition at some point, but he hoped that Johann would return to him and work at the bank, or another worthwhile profession. Freelancing was accepted, only when his son showed that he was making a decent living from it.
Opinion began to degrade from January 2009 when Johann rushed to Britain after getting into trouble in Hanover, where he was living. Wolfgang's prying into Johann's affairs, and his worries that his son has feelings for men, and lives in far too Muggle an abode to be correct is straining a once pleasant relationship to breaking point. The news in January 2010 that Johann was engaged to Hannah Bombay, a known werewolf who had recently come before the Wizengamot, made Wolfgang see red, calling upon his contacts to intimidate his son and possible daughter in law, much to the disgust and horror of his wife.
Now the breakfast was back in her throat,
the smell of the rotting head hanging on her senses. How could he, her loving husband, do such a thing to their son and future daughter? She looked down at the writing in her hand. The secretary must not have known what she was labelling, had probably brought the paper to Wolfgang's attention in the first instance too.
History:
Born to Medgar and Erika, Wolfgang was given his father and grandfather's names as middle names. He grew up in Leipzig, educated by family as is the family tradition. His entry to Durmstrang was easy and Wolfgang made many friends, getting into the Oberteils on recommendation.
He made money as a student by running books on matches and illegal duels amongst the student body, which was not always honourable but mostly profitable. Money and markets have always interested Wolfgang, so working for
Chrysopoeia was a very predictable outcome.
Wolfgang and Camille met while managing the goblins (a role neither of them carry out now). They both had former partners without settling or down or children. He fell in love quickly and deeply with Camille. She was an intelligent, patient woman with a beautiful voice and a kind heart. She was very easy to love, and brought out a softer side in Wolfgang.
The couple had a home in Hanover, close to extended family for Wolfgang by the time their only son, Johann was born. Camille decided wisely he was probably enough for them both, but perhaps regrets this now. A girl would have been nice. Wolfgang isn't too worried as long as Johann makes him proud.
Johann had a memory of sitting at a family wedding as a child,
holding his mother's hand while the ceremony went on, staring at the two rings on her long, slender finger, as he sat between his mother and father. He had been four or five at the most, dressed in a simple black robe which itched. The sun had shone brightly, or that could be his memories glossing over the grey, but he remembered being very warm.
It wasn't long after Johann was born that they moved to Frankfurt to be closer to the bank, and the offer of a bank-owned property to look after them was appealing. This became the house that Johann grew up in. Both parents were keen to develop their son's non magical talents, and spent hours teaching him mathematics, geography, languages, and history, which put him in good stead for when he finally did attend Durmstrang.
It was during Johann's time at the school that Wolfgang began to become involved with the other governors, though he initially resisted any suggestion at joining them until Johann had left in 1994, mainly as however much he loved his son, he felt knowing what did happen at the school would worry him more than necessary. He joined just as the Tri-wizard tournament began, staying on as Karkaroff deserted them and Eisenberg took over.
With the Tetra Wizard Tournament upon them, Wolfgang has become even more involved in the day to day financial matters of the school, ensuring the budget for the Tournament is suitable, and that the team is well stocked. He particularly enjoys his access to Auberon Eisenberg, the headmaster, whom he holds great respect for.
In 2010 things took a complete nosedive. Hannah Bombay sought her revenge on Wolfgang for fraudulently cleaning out her account, and her small act of revenge coincided with some revelations at the bank. They were all too happy to sack Wolfgang for it, making it appear that he was both insane and responsible for the fraud (though he was generally innocent, though guilty of other fraud, just not that). Camille, trying to defend him, ended up losing her own job and the two were evicted from their home, which still belonged to the bank and became homeless in June 2010.
Uprooting to Britain was one option to get away from the whole situation and also to appeal to Gringotts for jobs. Their experience and their insider knowledge proved to be of some value, though the two of them had to quickly get used to a rather more frugal lifestyle.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them:
Wolfgang advises and builds up portfolios of stocks and shares for Gringotts customers who wish to invest in foreign markets. He keeps abreast of wider financial ripples both in the wizard and muggle worlds to help, and trades to make gains. His wages are motivated by his success.
Old job: As a senior account manager, Wolfgang's installation as a governor of sorts was very logical as he sat in on meetings and informed the group about the school's financial health. Managing the investments of the school takes up 80% of Wolfgang's attention at the bank.
With the Tetra wizard tournament upon them, the school's finances are stretched further, and certain assets are set for liquidation to balance the costs.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field:
Worked from the bottom up at the bank since leaving Durmstrang. Decades working in banking since his graduation at a high level.
Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Sharp, unconventionally handsome financial expert. Concerned father, loving husband, German wizard. Wolfgang is generally bad tempered, but very useful as a friend. By keeping him on your side, you gain much. Very traditional, he is intolerant of Muggles and werewolves amongst other things.
