[July 23] To relive how I lost it all [Brett, Auror Supervisor] on November 13, 2011, 04:28:53 PM From this post."I need to report this," Jazz said in determination once all the bottles were empty and she felt her bones knitting back together. "That Wacky-Old-Harpie can't get away with taking my wand..." she said bitterly, minding to keep Johnny's ring out of it, lest it make Church go on another rampage about how he wasn't worth it."You need to rest. Report this tomorrow," the medi-witch said with a sigh while putting things away."No! She could be in Siberia by then!" Jazz exclaimed in frustration.Jazz and the medi-witch argued for the next few minutes until the woman gave up and announced she was going to make a Floo call to the Ministry and have someone come over. By then Church had left to assure Jazz was safe, after being sworn to leave out the sordid details and merely say she was still working on her mural and would be home shortly. This made Jazz visibly relax. As she waited for the Auror to arrive, she focused on getting rid of her headache, closing her eyes and covering her face with a pillow. God, how she hated waiting. Life of a trainee was everything Brett expected it to be- busy and boring all at the same time. Odd hours, lots of training, and being a gopher. Mostly Brett had been a gopher so far. Fetching coffee, running forms, carrying memos and instructions from one section of the DMLE to another and sometimes onto other levels. But what more could she expect for the first few weeks? When there had been an option to tag along on questioning a girl who had been attacked in Diagon, Brett had jumped at the chance to get to attend. But when she arrived at Mungo's, along with a supervising auror, her excitement had faded when she recognized the girl in the bed.Brett had only just graduated Hogwarts, and Jazz was just a year behind her- they were even in the same house. She'd always been on friendly terms with Jazz, though they hadn't really spoken much since she'd left Hogwarts to pursue a career as an auror. What a way to get her feet wet in the field- having to talk to someone that she knew, and someone who certainly wasn't old enough to be on the receiving end of a crime like this. Professionalism was something that Brett severely lacked, and had been working hard to get a better grasp of. But it was hard to grow up overnight, especially with so many of the other aurors enjoying a good joke and a laugh. "You look like hell, Jazz," Brett commented with a grin, sitting down in a chair beside the hospital bed. Brett had never really questioned anyone before, and didn't have a clue on how to go about doing it. Normally, this assignment would be dealt with by a hitwizard, unless it turned out a dark wizard was behind the attack, which had caused no end of grumbling by Sam when he received the assignment. deciding to use the assignment to give one of the trainees some practice in solving real cases, he asked Trainee Abraham to tag along. arriving at the room, he sat down in the second chair beside the bed, keeping silent for now. What were the odds? "Yeah, and it feels like I've been there, too." she replied with a playful wink. "I trust your training is going well?" Jazz added with a bright smile, spirits lifting in Brett's presence. She hadn't seen Brett since school let out in June, but she figured Auror training was a time-consuming job that didn't leave much freedom for catching up. So, an Auror trainee and a veteran, probably to supervise things. she noted, looking between the two casually."So, how do we do this? You ask questions and I retell with as much vigor I can muster in my state?" she offered with slight whimsy. "I want to get this out of the way as soon as possible so that Wacky-Old-Harpie can be caught sooner. If at all." she added cryptically, attempting to sit up straighter on the bed. Ow, that still hurts, she winced, clutching her ribs carefully. Jazz had never been questioned by any law enforcement official, so she didn't know how these things worked. Was this going to take all night? "Well enough," she said. "They haven't kicked me out yet, so that's a good sign, yeah? Hopefully it continues to go that well. Haven't started the hard stuff quite yet. First few weeks is tests and making sure that we're auror material." But Brett knew that she was auror material without having to take tests to tell her that. Then Jazz asked how they would do this. Brett looked at the senior auror, then over to Jazz. "I guess so. I've never really done it before so I don't know protocol." Brett trailed off, when Jazz said she wanted to be sure that the woman who did this was caught quickly. "Don't you worry, Jazz, we're going to do everything we can to get her!"Brett looked over to Sam again. "So how does this whole thing start?" she asked her supervisor. "What are the right kind of questions to ask?" Brett usually learned better through example than trial and error. Like something that crawled out of a swamp."She had... black and green, unruly and thinning hair. Her eyes were dark and... sunken, like she had been starved or something, and they were covered in kohl. Wrinkly and dull skin. A really thick coat, heavy boots... with a permanent scowl. Middle-aged and Caucasian." she went on, describing various aspects of her mugger's appearance."I think she knew the Dark Arts, too. If that helps. Which it probably doesn't. But I saw her wand. It was shorter than mine, but not by much. So probably around nine inches? It was light-ish colored, like orange-beige." she recalled. She knew this was unnecessary information, but it couldn't hurt to know. She quickly began to copy down what Jazz was saying about howt he woman looked. Black and green hair, ugly black and green hair, small dark sunken eyes... Brett copied all of it down, but blinked when she said the woman's eyes were covered in kohl. What on earth did that mean? Even so, she kept on dutifully copying down what her friend had to say about the matter. Brett also took note of the size and color of the wand. Every little bit helped."What d'you mean her eyes were covered in kohl?" she asked now that Jazz had finished. "Like heavy liner or something? Or was she just that dirty?" Often made using lead[1] surprsiing to hear of a Caucasian woman using it, though, it's not common outside Africa or Asia." Sam told the Trainee. This is the kind of detail that would be necessary to solve this case. Assuming Miss Hawke hadn't misidentified the race of her attacker ( which was possible, admittedly) then someone Caucasian who wore Kohl and had black and green hair, itself a very good feature to note, since there weren't many people who dyed their hair like that. Not sure if it was actual kohl, or just something that looked like it." Jazz said, thinking back on the attack. Her eyes were wide and had a crazy gleam in them. "There wasn't a real pattern to the green in her hair, though. Just some strands here and there. Other than that her hair was prominently black." She said, motioning to her own hair the bits of green that was evident on the attacker.Jazz was starting to get antsy, thinking she didn't have enough information on the attacker to build a strong case. Damn it, why didn't I pay attention more? Jazz scoffed. Well, maybe because I was being mugged, idiot. Who has time or the mind to pay attention to minute details of someone who's strangling you six feet in the air? Brett didn't wear make up often, and the eyeliner she used was... just simple, plain, boring eyeliner. Nothing special about it. But she was pretty sure that lead was dangerous, and she wouldn't want to be smearing all over her eyes. But she just made a quick not about the kohl and what it was for future reference. In case someone else didn't know what it was. She wrote down the bits of hair that Jazz said were green. "Green's just an awful hair color," Brett commented. "But I guess most of the people who are going to mug you aren't going to be good looking... But she sounds like she'd be easy to pick out. I don't imagine a lot of dirty, green and black haired women are around. Not that I've seen, anyway. I'm sure somebody else must have seen her or know who she is." She was partially trying to give Jazz some hope they'd capture her assailant, and partly being honest. The woman sounded like she just had to stand out. "D'you think you'd recognize her if you saw her again?" Brett asked. Her jaw was set and lips pressed as if they were stitched together again. Pure hatred for the mugger infected her every cell, burning like napalm down to her core. She couldn't blink without the horrid image of the woman invading her mind. She was disgusting. There was no doubt in her mind she would recognize that Wacky-Old-Harpy in a sea of other crazy criminals."Yes, everything I said about her is valid. Is there anything else you need to know?" she said, eyes flickering to Brett. She wanted this to be over so she could go home and unload on her own comfy bed after taking a nice hot shower with her fluffy cat sleeping at the foot of her bed.
