There are some advantages to being short, of course, but she considers them poor compensation for the limitations. It isn’t that she can’t reach the highest shelves, or even the middle shelves (she has a wand), it’s that looking down on people is harder when you have to look up at them to do so.Not particularly graceful, she has never been accident-prone and has a strong awareness of her environment, particularly how far to stay away from certain individuals to avoid surprise hug attempts. Alex dislikes being touched by other people and is fiercely protective of her disproportionately large personal space. Her elbows are bony, and surprisingly sharp.Though aware of their value, Alex doesn’t care for other people’s opinion enough to put significant effort into maintaining appearances, rating practicality above all else. Her hair is of sufficient length to tie back, but never allowed to grow much longer than that. While others might wait for the next Hogsmeade visit to request a haircut, Alex would rather cut her own hair, or ask someone else to do it. Since the only concession to a style she makes is having a fringe, an uneven cut doesn’t concern her.Perhaps if she smiled more often, Alex might be beautiful, but Alex’s expression tends to disdain far more frequently. Her eyes are her best feature, a clear blue which makes her stares all the more effective.-Personality Description-More likely to criticise than compliment, Alex has exacting standards for both herself and others, and a low tolerance for people in general. Not particularly concerned by most people’s feelings, Alex is blunt, and frequently critical. Though she does possess some tact, she rarely uses it and is more likely to deliberately antagonise than try to soothe hurt feelings. People, she feels, are rarely worth the effort.Though she has little difficulty expressing scorn, disdain, and contempt, Alex tries to keep other emotions below the surface. Already a personal tendency, this was reinforced by her upbringing, and Alex finds grand displays of emotion – in both herself and others – uncomfortable to be around at best. Being open doesn’t come naturally to her, and she rarely expresses her affection verbally.Possessing a strong love of learning was enough to place her in Ravenclaw, but sadly, this does not equate to a love of school. Happily, the library is well-stocked, and Alex enjoys reading about the topics that she is interested in. Though loathe to seem ignorant, she has accepted that there are some subjects (Divination, ugh) that study of would be a waste of her valuable time.Capable of discussing philosophy, Alex still prefers the tangible. She likes having the results of her hard work in her hands, to be adjusted, refined, and eventually perfected, something she finds to be vastly more satisfying than arguing about morality. There is little on that level that Alex holds to be absolute, and her own morals are better left unexamined. She certainly doesn’t allow them to concern her overly. She is claustrophobic.-History-Surprise is too small a word to communicate the response of his family when Charles Carstairs announced his intention to marry Victoria Augarde. While she was undoubtedly pretty and talented, she was also, more importantly, a muggle born. His siblings responded with disdain, his parents with anger, furious that their son wouldn’t be trying to maintain the purity of their bloodline and that he wouldn’t marry into a family of greater wealth and consequence than a lowly (for all muggle families were inherently lower than even the lowest wizarding family) background. But despite their best efforts, he maintained that marry her he would – and eventually he did. Seemingly, Charles had moved past his upbringing, and the couple were, to all appearances, happy. True, they were both working long hours, and their social circles barely overlapped, but to ask one about the other was to bring an affectionate smile and murmurs of conjugal bliss to their lips. True, Charles’ family still couldn’t be said to approve of the union, although they had agreed that a muggleborn was better than a muggle, and Charles found Victoria’s family entirely baffling, and not entirely pleasant, but they were minor flaws in an otherwise blissful union. The announcement that Victoria was pregnant wasn’t entirely according to Charles’ plan. Not entirely fond of children, he had hoped for a few more years of grace – time to further his career without any concern for the time required to raise a child. But it was one he adapted to, and much as Victoria loved her job, she was happy to start a family.Small, wide eyed, and prone to screaming when left alone for too long, as all babies are, Alex was a solemn baby who grew to be a solemn child. Her mother was affectionate, her father, awkward, and Alexandra wanted for very little. When she was old enough (though too young, Victoria privately thought) her mother returned to work, and a Nanny was hired. Reports were largely satisfactory: Alexandra had little difficulty with her education, and showed signs of magical ability from a young age.Her introduction to Theo Whitman marked the beginning of her closest relationship, the least of their similarities being a dislike of their own first names.Victoria’s passing made Alex, already withdrawn, even more so. But the effect on Charles was more profound. Her loss meant that he was Alex’s sole parent and this adjustment was one he found exceedingly difficult to cope with. It was immediately obvious how much he had avoided taking an interest in his daughter’s wellbeing, and he returned to his Father’s authoritarian methods of parenting. While she had tutors, when their hours were finished, Alexandra was left to devise her own entertainments. The sole requirement Charles placed on them was that they did not disturb him, and when they did, he reprimanded her severely, devising strict punishments to ensure that she did not err. And she didn’t – or, at the very least, she got better at not being caught erring. The rest of her childhood was, by and large, uneventful. Going to Hogwarts turned out to be both a relief and a disappointment. Freed from her father’s expectations, Hogwarts was freeing. But an interest in learning, Alex discovered, did not mean an interest in school.Tutoring was vastly different, and much preferable to, classrooms filled with people who seemed determined to appear more stupid than their neighbours. But despite that, Alex’s grades remained impressive: failure was unacceptable, and her problem was her peers rather than the subject. Despite having a laissez-faire attitude to the rules, Alex’s behaviour was generally good – although it was noted her relationships with many students were poor. Not all, of course, and while she did not form relationships swiftly, the number of people who she might admit to liking slowly grew.-How Do You Fit Into Your House?-Her intelligence, particularly her quick wit.-Writing Sample-She waited until he had left the room before she moved, and even then, movement was too generous a description for the slow descent to the floor, limbs folding in on themselves and thin fingers clenching into fists, her breath slow and uneven. She stayed silent, just in case.Around her, twisted pieces of metal were still recognisable as the parts to make a number of tiny birds, wings bright and beaks sharp, that wheeled about a pivot in patterns that were so complex it was hard to believe that they were so. Patterns that she would have deciphered, if she'd had the time, worked out with patience and time. The sob that escaped her made her furious, and she wiped her face viciously, expression already returning to one of carefully constructed blankness. The birds, so carefully constructed, could not be restored half as easily. She could feel the tightening of her ribcage, the harshening of her breathing, and she moved her attentions to evening those out, picking up a wing and rubbing along the edge of it with her thumb, the simple back and forth helping to calm her. When her breathing was level again, she moved, unfurling herself slowly and cautiously. She felt oddly stiff, as though she was sixty rather than sixteen, but rather than working through it slowly and cautiously, she sped up, hands moving quickly to pick up the other parts, scattered across the floor like detritus.Soon, her hands were full, and she stood up properly in order to place the pieces on the table, depositing them with unnecessary tenderness. They looked more pitiful like that, a small pile of scrap metal ready to be thrown away as junk, and she turned back to her task. It wasn't hard to do, and there was a rhythm to it that helped to soothe the furious, impotent rage that sought some form of revenge. She deserved revenge, she wanted him to hurt, to watch as she -- the scraping grind of two cogs stopped her thoughts, her hands loosening with the swiftness of instinct, and she resumed her work, pushing faster and paying slightly less care than before - still ample to prevent any more damage to the birds, but enough that she was moving quickly, the pile of pieces gradually increasing into a mound, until eventually she surveyed the floor and saw nothing other than the tiles. There was a pause as she considered how best to remove them, and when she had made her decision, she disappeared upstairs, moving with customary silence in unshod feet. It was a few minutes before she returned, a roll of velvet in hand that she placed on the table, hands dexterous as she transferred the pieces to it.She rolled the velvet up again, decision made.-Sum up your character in one paragraph-Alex is quick witted, with a sharp sense of humour and a sharper tongue. Like many Ravenclaws, she treasures knowledge, and believes that it deserves to be pursued for its own sake - although not all her ideals are so lofty, and she prioritises personal gain over morals. Abrasive and sarcastic, Alex is not a pleasant individual and resents having feelings, let alone being expected to confess to them, although she cares about those she deems worthy of her affection deeply. NoIf Yes, then Please provide their name and a link to their bio: What level is this ability at? IntermediateAt what age did your character gain this ability? Aged 12How did they learn or hone this ability? The day Alex returned from her first year at Hogwarts, her Father, an accomplished legilimens and occlumens, began to teach her to use Occlumency. His methods were not the most orthodox, but they were undoubtedly effective, and by the time of her return to Hogwarts, she was already able to use Occlumency. It took longer before she was able to use Legilimency, particularly because her Father rarely got her to practice it, but eventually, she managed that too. Her lessons have continued every holiday since.Of course, she didn't just rely on him. The gap between them was already too wide to allow it, and Alex sought further information from her favourite source: books. There were a number in her own home on the subject, ones that she assumed belonged to her Father, and when she returned to Hogwarts that September there were more available, although some of them were frustratingly off-limits in the restricted section. Already weighed down with several volumes, of varying levels of interest and reliability, Alex bided her time.As ever, there was only one person who was party to her trials: her best friend, Theo Whitman. At first, he was only use as a source of constant and frequently unanswerable stupid questions, but Alex was still happy to be able to pass on her own, limited, knowledge of how to achieve both. He wasn't as quick to learn as she had been - but they both had lessons and homework to do, and he had less motivation to do so. The competition between them - unspoken, and not especially intense, but slightly more so than the harmless rivalry between two friends - helped her improve more rapidly, Alex's development improved by the knowledge that, come summer, she would be home again and exposed to her Father's less pleasant lessons.Describe how the Special Ability influences their life. What do they use it for?Alex isn't so delusional as to assume that her thoughts are of unique worth, or that she is likely to have her mind forced open for another's viewing. But likely isn't certain, and the security that knowing that her mind is inviolable is one that she treasures. Furthermore, the skills required to develop Occlumency and Legilimency are useful to her in her studies, her ability to focus and recall enhanced. She uses both talents most often when practicing them. Outside of that, she uses Occlumency to prevent her Father from using Legilimency against her. Legilimency, she uses even less, lacking the motivation to do so. Theo is the one more concerned with controlling others, whereas Alex doesn't think that it's worth the effort. Despite her own dislike of others reading her thoughts, Alex doesn't concern herself with the moral issues surrounding the privacy of another's thoughts, and is instead more worried about the problems that would arise from getting caught.Write a description of what happens when your character is exhibiting this Special AbilityAt present, Alex is capable of the most basic level of Occlumency - that is, preventing a Legilimens from reading her thoughts - although against a skilled Legilimens, it's likely that her defences would eventually fail. Even if unable to protect against an attack, she would still be able to tell that one was taking place. The more advanced method of suppressing individual memories, and allowing the Legilimens to see others, she can use occasionally, but she's far from mastering it and thus far her attempts have been inconsistent.Legilimency, she can use when she has her wand in hand, and ideally when making eye contact. However, her Legilimency is much weaker than her Occlumency, and although it has improved through her practices with Theo, it is still ineffective against Occlumency. When using either, Alex is unable to do anything other than focus on maintaining the spell, becoming nearly oblivious to her surroundings, although she still responds to auditory stimuli. After using Legilimency for anything other than the briefest of uses, she suffers from intense headaches, with the same applying to more prolonged use of Occlumency. That aside, her genuine enjoyment of dueling would mean that she'd work hard to make duelling club as enjoyable for others as it is for her, and because she views duelling club as a means of practicing the art of duelling, and not as the grounds for acting out petty rivalries, she'd also be determined that it remained an enjoyable club, if one with a strong competitive element. She's also confident in her own abilities, and this would allow her to give constructive advice to the other members of the club, as well as meaning that she'd be unafraid of stepping in if she thought matters were getting out of hand. YesIf Yes, then Please provide their name and a link to their bio: Alex Carstairs, Legillimens/Occlumens What level is this ability at? IntermediateAt what age did your character gain this ability? 17How did they learn or hone this ability?Like everyone born into the wizarding world, Alex was aware of animagi and how they differed from merely transforming oneself into an animal from an early age. It was, she decided, something that she would like to be able to do when she was older. Although she put considerable effort into it during her first few years at Hogwarts, she made little progress and as she grew older her interest fluctuated, sometimes more focused on the theoretical and sometimes with the purpose of becoming an animagus herself. It was the Nightshades that galvanised Alex to really push for the transformation. The others were animagi, and able to skulk off into the night together, leaving her behind. Of course, she had Naomi for company – but although she respected the younger girl, far more than she did almost any other fourth year, it still rankled, and Alex felt that she was excluded, even within the small group. The others did nothing to suggest as such, other than a few discussions about being animagi that Alex was unable to participate in, but the Ravenclaw still found the divide frustrating. Not to mention that being incapable, no matter that others wouldn’t view it as such, was entirely inexcusable.Although her friends were barely past the transformation themselves, they were still happy to help Alex, with advice that was sometimes useful and sometimes nonsensical, and the occasional jab about what she might transform into. But through their assistance, and no small amount of determination, Alex began to improve, even if it didn’t always feel like it.Describe how the Special Ability influences their life. What do they use it for?Alex mainly uses the ability with the Nightshades, at least for the moment. Being considerably smaller normal and able to put on a considerable turn of speed means that sneaking around the castle is far easier, and has enabled her to properly explore the rooftops of Hogwarts. (The gargoyles are a fascinating bunch.)She doesn’t use it often during the day; classes are too frequent and the transformation requires too much effort on her behalf to make the change worthwhile. And, despite being far less conspicuous than the others, the sooty falcon is non-native to Scotland and Alex worries that a keen ornithologist might note this. And who’s to say that it won’t be an advantage in future? Alex would be reluctant to explain why, exactly, she thinks the ability to fly away at will could be useful, but… it could be. Luck favours the prepared, after all.But even if she never needs to use the transformation, being able to fly without assistance, even as poorly as Alex does, is well worth the effort she put in.Write a description of what happens when your character is exhibiting this Special AbilityAlex transforms into a sooty falcon. Slightly smaller than average, her feathers are darker than usual: black, and a deeper grey for the back. She has scarring on her talons which correspond to the scars on her hand, which were caused by her overly aggressive owl.But leaping off a building and soaring away before touching the ground is still, for Alex, a distant dream. Unlike more practiced animagi, Alex needs time to make the transformation, firstly to begin it, then to complete it, and then to become accustomed to the different limbs it involves. Although she can fly, it is ungainly and would quickly be noticed by someone watching as abnormal. Furthermore, she requires a wand to transform, and finds it difficult to maintain for long periods of time, in addition to being worried that she’ll be unable to return to human form if she waits too long to attempt the return. Flying requires considerable amounts of energy, and when human again she is often exhausted. As for others – aside from a few hairs plucked with a sharp beak from a snow leopard that wouldn’t keep its paws to itself, and possibly a few students up past curfew glimpsing a falcon soaring around at night, there has been minimal impact on anyone else. Skip to next post

In her opinion, duelling is an excellent way to apply what you have learnt in class in a practical manner, as well as forcing the individual to think quickly. Duelling may not be the most practical application of magic, but it is one of the most taxing and to be successful, you require a variety of skills. The president of duelling club is needed not only to ensure that the members have fun, but to offer advice and assistance to the other members of the club so that they can improve as duelers.Tell a Story From Your Past That Has Proven Your MettleAlex takes her own responsibilities seriously, and her refusal to fail alone would provide sufficient drive for her to try and make duelling club as successful and versatile as possible. Title Request: Alexandra Carstairs, Ravenclaw Prefect Reply #6 on September 05, 2015, 11:16:42 AM Special Title RequestCharacter Name: Alexandra CarstairsTitle Applying For: Ravenclaw PrefectCharacter Biography: http://absitomen.com/index.php?topic=9498.0What Experience has Prepared You For This Honor?: As a diligent student, Alex has consistently been an involved member of the student body. She is driven and works hard to make sure that she does well in class, including having tutoring sessions with the charms professor, Rick Donovan, as she has a natural aptitude and wants to improve on it.However, her most relevant experience is that of presidency, and later vice-presidency, of duelling club, giving her prior experience of a leadership position over other students that few have. It taught her many valuable skills, including the importance of tactful communication and the ability to work with others as part of a team. She also gained experience at organising events, and particularly (given the nature of duelling club) at avoiding potential problems, and how to deal with what problems did arise. What Do You Think the Most Important Aspect of This Job Is:? If the prefects argue, they publically undermine each other and diminish their reputation. Alex is tactful where necessary, and being well aware of the enthusiasm and energy of her fellow students she will offer a more reasoned approach during meetings, helping to temper exuberant suggestions to ones which are more realistic, and helping to ensure that the prefects are able to work together productively, even for such small things as their patrolling the corridors.Tell a Story From Your Past That Has Proven Your Mettle: As president of duelling club, Alex displayed leadership qualities, showing a great deal of personal self-restraint in carrying out her duties and dealing with problems swiftly and capably Skip to next post
