Personality Description: Jean-Baptiste Facilier is a man in love with the darkness in the hearts of men, both for good and for bad. He loves his position and power as head of a crime-family, giving him the luxuries he never had growing up in Haiti. He uses it to pursue his goal of not mastering death, but the dead so he can ensure an empire both in this life and the next. But he knows that he still has a ways to go, so before reaching that point he believes a healthy portion of paranoia is good, and he gets very superstitious, respecting the customs of all societies.
Though he uses it mostly for criminal behavior he has an impressive intelligence and ambition, which he also uses for his political cover-operations, getting people from his home country to the whole of Great Britain and giving them a new life.
He often feels envy towards others, either by thinking he's inferior either in respect to power or status, and if they really are, he will bide his time, knowing that death comes to all, and he is the master of death.
But when it comes to people who are on his side, so to speak, he can show quite a bit of fondness, although never in the deep sense of love, for he feels no such emotion. It's more like a contentedness of seeing his dreams being realized, step by step.
These bursts of relative niceness are few and far between, though, and he spends most of his free time experimenting on anything and anyone he can get his hands on, even his own people.
History: Jean-Baptiste Facilier was born on the île de la Tortue, the famous island of Tortuga, to the family of the Haitian dark wizard: his grandfather.
His parents sent him into the care of his grandfather and his fellow mages at a young age, for he had been chosen as his grandfather's successor as the leader of the coven.
It was in this circle he was taught that his family was truly magical, and not just based their practices on superstition, stemming from a long line of wizards and shamans, always keeping the blood and the connection to the spirits pure. The importance of this was the first thing etched into his mind. The second was that death and the dead was nothing to fear, for he was destined to rule it all.
Many years with the vodou magic and helping with his grandfather's responsibilities and his interest in the small, dark, but powerful side, taught him all the aspects of magic, but he developed a taste and aptitude for necromancy, pretty much as was expected for the coming lord of the circle. What no one suspected was the dark seed it planted in his soul.
Jean-Baptiste was after a while allowed to travel, and it was on these travels he first started using his knowledge for his amusement and nothing else. He was meticulous and careful, and by not overindulging by taking a lot of victims, no disease, disappearance or death was ever linked to him, and he was never suspected.
After a few years of traveling and regularly checking back in with his grandfather, he soon had enough of the prospects awaiting him with a small life on a small island off the coast of a poor country. So he visited the hut of the waiting coven one night, and poisoned their dinner with the traditional venom of the blowfish, and reanimated them the same night. He then ventured out into the houses of the rest of the tiny village, killing everyone except the rest of his family. He then methodically first made the site unplottable and Muggle-repelling, and went through all the neighboring villages, erasing their memories of his own village, effectively erasing it from history. His parents were sent with his younger brother first to America to get integrate themselves in a more modern society, and to get his brother an education. He placed a tattoo with a deadly curse that would activate if they ever disobeyed him, and then he sent them on their way.
Meanwhile, Facilier began traveling the Mexican Gulf, and insinuated himself into one village or social caste after the other, influencing a few minds here and there, especially the young and impressionable. He began gathering a following, some of who actually followed him in his travels, and some who he left where they were, with orders to recruit others and start building financial support and contacts for his new sect/family which he had started that night he destroyed his village: the Sons of Samedi. He came up with the name because he swears he saw the Baron Samedi walking among the dead at the end of the night, and the Loa turned towards Jean-Baptiste and nodded his head in greeting and approval. Facilier knew he was on the right path.
It went like this for several years, and he soon began traveling outside the Gulf, touring South-, Middle-, and North America, showing selective people with connections to vodou how powerful he was, and gathering some willing followers, some unwilling but threatened followers, and the rest he obliviated. And a rare few, most often the leaders of cults he replaced, were killed. This ability to be both "benevolent" and a bringer of misfortune gave him two nicknames: When he was goodwilled he was called Papa, a reference to Papa Legba, a central Loa in vodou, and simply called the Baron when referring to Samedi and the death that could follow.
He soon had a grasp stretching across nations, and he crushed many other crime-families that were Muggles through the fact that he had magic on his side. This gave him the money and influence to further his brother's education and make him eligible for the best schools and scholarships, soon having him enter the political circles of the US Senate of Magic (or whatever it's called), where he soon became a liaison between Haiti and the United States. He kept this job for a few years, before requesting a transfer to England and a posting there, under orders of Jean-Baptiste, who wanted to come with him and experience the Old World with a legitimate cover, and also spread his influence further.
Jean-Baptiste joined his brother in London after a few years of setting up the basis of the family in London and its environs. He was known as only a lieutenant of the Sons by the few magical authorities back home, and only by another name: Jean-Luc LaCrux. He had set it up like that years earlier, in case he had to or wanted to make a change. Since they didn't know of his familial relationships or his real name, he faked his death, and created a new public persona. He started touring both the minor and major social happenings for magical high society in both America and then Europe, soon settling down in England, where he now has begun to work on his wish of reaching across the sea, and having no bounds.
