Naomi scratched her head when Veronica cursed at the ball, and then went over to pull her up from the ground before the next serve came over and then made Abby equally upset. The boys had found it humorous for a little bit, but Don had a guilty look on his face after Abby's comment. The dark-skinned witch really wasn't in the mood for a pity party, and she didn't think the game would have taken so long, but all this back and forth made 25 points seem like hours away. She wanted to surf.

Naomi caught the ball off the net as she considered a few options for turning things around. Magic was out of the option; she wasn't about to resort to it during a sport they were being very muggly about. Then cheating was never an option for her; she had too much pride for that. Then there was fairness to consider, especially with the learning curve involved for some of both parties. Ah fairness... something that Naomi Foley completely lacked; all was fair in love and war and whenever someone wanted their way.

"I'll take it 'dis round, Abby," Naomi said happily, but as she bent next to the net she gave the Reid sister an all too familiar smile, satisfied and set beneath a mischievous pair of narrow green eyes that brushed over Veronica before a familiar thwack sounded and Don served the ball again.

The white ball went for a narrow dive over the net, but Naomi made a quick skip and leaped to meet the ball at the net with the hilt of an unforgiving fist, punching the ball back down on the other side right next to the Cowboy.  With a hanging jaw. the boy was stunned, looking from Naomi to a snickering Maki as Adio was overcome with waves of laughter from the sideline.

"Point," she said happily as the boy suddenly adjusted his hat and rambled off in another language at her. Naomi shrugged with feigned innocence as he held up three fingers on the other side of the net.

"One, two, or t'ree--no more." Naomi counted her fingers in response, and then the boys looked at each other, and seemed to exchange a conversation that involved some complaints and teasing. Don of course, politely rolled her the ball for her to serve.

Naomi may not know how to stand on a surfboard, but she knew how to hit a volleyball and to take advantage of her height. It may also be accurate to say she got some morbid satisfaction from sending a painful projectile directly at someone's face from a long distance. Just a little bit.

The trouble with boys was that they tried to imitate a great trick too quickly--something else Naomi aimed to take advantage of with her serves. So she tossed up the ball, with a very lazy stance, took a step forward, and then lazily smacked the ball off the butt of her palm with a clever flick of her wrist. The ball hit the the tip of the net like a slingshot, and the cowboy jumped up to try and meet it, only to retreat from a premature hit as the ball rolled up and over the net, to drop like an anvil at his feet. It only took them a few more minutes and about 8 more points to realize she was doing it on purpose.

Msamaki then jumped up to the net with a wide smile and said something and made a motion like he wanted something, and then the cowboy agreed with a bit of a defeated sigh. Naomi looked between them, and then Don said something as he scratched his head with a bit more doubt.

Naomi tilted her head and shrugged her shoulders to her ears, "I t'ink 'dey want the ball," then Naomi added with a twisting tone of amusement, "or want me to go easy on 'dem..." The remark seemed to get them a bit more animated. The guys made a few more random motions[1] and Naomi sat there and silently tried to decipher what they were saying. She really wasn't in any rush to properly interpret what they were saying, of course!
 1. Totally up for interpretation

Ronnie had mostly lingered over at the left side of the net, and as the boys were all righties, they were sending the ball over to Abby and Naomi far more often. And she was glad to see Naomi take charge of the situation. Part of her knew it was ignorant for her to want the boys to speak English, as they were in their country, after all, but the desire was there nonetheless. "Look at tha'," she motioned to them with a broad smirk. "Gabbin' away like a bunch of old bints at tea." Then, louder, she added, "Oy! Nancies! Enjoyin' your sausage fest, are you?"

It was then that Veronica recognized what they were motioning about. "I think... they wanna quit," she squinted. They sure didn't seem happy about it, but there wasn't a thing she could do about that.

"I mean..." she began, brushing her hair out of her face, "I'd be more than happy to not be separated by a net."

Naomi made the tables turn with her wit and mad volleyball skills! The boys looked confused, then became more animated as they rambled on in words she couldn't understand. She clutched her stomach and laughed at Naomi's teasing and Veronica's trash talk.

"Boys!" Abby called out, waving her arms in the air and interrupting their conversation. With a grin, she pointed out at the water, and then mimed swimming in as goofy a way as she could, complete with kicking up her legs and moving her arms through the air. Then she hopped on someone's towel in the sand, and mimed surfing, somehow managing to keep a straight face as the boys stared at her.

"Surfing! Let's go!" She yelled happily, just to make it absolutely clear.

Abby picked up an extra board laying around the beach, and waited a second or two for her friends. Completely ignoring any further debate from the boys (Cowboy looked quite grumpy), Abby headed for the water, her good mood restored!

Naomi could hardly hold back a scratch of a laugh as she bowed her head at Abby's sudden departure and theft of a surfboard. Apparently, it also belonged to one of the boys as the tall and awkward Don skipped after her calling out her friend's name with a series of heavy and urging foreign words. Of course Adio hopped on after them, snatching up his own board and running towards the water, with a familiar whisp of a feathered shadow stalking him from behind.

"So, love playing you boys, but I'm ready for a dunk," and so was her grainy buttocks. Naomi then lilted off a similar phrase in Jamaican Creole botched it with plenty of her grandmother's Hindi--which was linguistically as close as Naomi could get to any Egyptian language, nevermind the few 20 or so countries between here and India.

They seemed to understand as Maki happily went to pick up his board and the cowboy went to grab his hat and sweep up his board as they headed to the water throwing off a string of words, one of which was curiously familiar but impossible to pick out with how fast they liked to talk.

"What?" Maki then turned her and pointed towards Abby and Don who was trying to get an excited Abby to stay on his board so he could climb on after her, then Naomi got it.

"Tandem[1]," she said to Veronica as they splashed into the water after the two remaining boys, "We're surfing tandem--sharing," she pouted her lips at the catch-22 of that, Naomi was hoping to have her own board, but she was just ready to surf.

Naomi then leaned into whisper to Veronica with a matter-of-factly teasing tone, "I'm going wit' 'di grumpy one who hasn't been eyeing my rack th' whole game," of course she didn't really trust being on the same surfboard as the cowboy she was sure she might want to trade boards with someone less grumpy, eventually.

So the two remaining boys, the the athletic pouty-lipped one and the short dark-skinned one, had their boards ready and were explaining how to get on, stay on, and surf (because they understood them perfectly.) They also acted like they had a massive itch to catch a wave, Naomi observed, or to show off.

After a familiar shadow swooped by again, they were then quickly accompanied by a fourth participant wishing to surf,  who dropped from his shadow and onto the end of one of the partner-less boys and excitedly ruffled his feathers.[2] The guys just turned and stared at the girls again, as if they had something to do with it.

"Well he even's t'ings out then doesn't he?"
 1. Like this, minus the ballet (unless the guys are being sneaky/sore after the game ; ).) The person on the end of the board sticks there feet in the water and paddles the most. The person in front can either be kneeling or laying down, at first, and then either stand up or get pulled up. They all also fall into the water at the end, I assume to keep balance  (but the girls don't have to know that either.)

Veronica liked it when Naomi spoke in other languages. The mystique it gave her was one that she was really quite jealous of. She wished idly that she had put in the effort necessary to study a language besides her family's butchered English, but after only a moment of thought she realized that it would have been intensely boring. As a girl, she had sometimes pretended to speak French to her classmates, but eventually, of course, one child figured out what she was doing and called her out on it. Never again. Oh God.

Surfing tandem? Ronnie had never considered this concept before outside of repeat viewings of Lilo and Stitch at the behest of Frankie and Penny. The idea didn't really make sense to her- it seemed hard enough for one person to stand up on a surfboard; how would two people possibly coordinate enough to be successful?

Nonetheless, she was sure there would be a reward in it for her in the form of a set of big, strong arms guiding her motions, and that was enough for the poor girl to set off to one of the foreign boys and alight on his board.

As she turned towards the ocean, she watched the waves surge and die. The surf seemed good today (though she felt like an idiot for saying it, as she had no idea what she was talking about) and she was sure they'd at least get one good wave in.

Perched daintily on the board, she watched her guy begin to paddle out, and her heart suddenly chilled over. This was really about to happen. Really. On the open sea. She was about to do something she definitely would not be able to do. "I don't think I'm gonna be able to do this," she said in a hushed voice to the boy. Bloobiddy-bloo. Or whatever his name was. King Tut. His face was unresponsive and he just motioned encouragingly towards the ocean. Oh, God damn, she thought fiercely, looking back at the shrinking shoreline. Too late now!

Naomi climbed onto the Cowboy's board and curled her legs beneath her as she pressed her hands against the wet board and watched Veronica and Maki pull into the roll of one of the ocean's wave, dragging Adio and Kaz in the water behind them as Kaz flapped his feathers happily.

Once Abby finally finished with her fit of giggles and managed to slip ont0 the board and stay, (much to her partner's relief,) another wave rose in behind the first and Don paddled the Reid sister out to the wave's surf.

Naomi's weight suddenly shifted and the wind started beating around her face as the surfboard beneath her had began sliding after Abby and Don. Naomi snapped her head back as she saw the Cowboy paddling into the wave and the water began speeding by faster and faster. He looked completely calm, bored even. Naomi just felt awkward, and wanted to jump off.

She wasn't accustomed to learning anything in an intimate way that was more physical than the bashing of a bludger against her body, and she began to realize she actually had to be held. Plenty of forethought there. But ocean was bending and leaning out in front of her and she felt the back of the board's weight shift as a pair of large hands gripped her upper arms and forcefully peeled her off the board's surface and pressed her into her surfing partner's stomach.

Well now she couldn't go anywhere, and Naomi wasn't paying enough attention to Abby and Jack Sparrow to see if they had gotten out of the wave somehow or just fell off. With her and Cowboy's legs braced against the board and his arm belted across her torso, they bobbed and swayed together in what felt like a weird struggle with a force of nature.

The experience was intense and mesmerizing and Naomi wished she had her want to do something fun to the water, but she still hadn't recovered enough of her wits to do anything but thoughtlessly let herself be carried away.

Then a voice piped up behind her again and she remembered that she was being held. Right.

  • "Jump."

The wizard's voice carried over the wind and splashing as it vibrated against her back and she tried to first process what he meant in Arabic, but stopped. Her eyes furrowed, she shook her head, and her thoughts jumped back, stopped and then realization slowly sank in as everything froze in mid-translation her voice swung in immediate confusion.

"What?"

Another hand came around her body and she suddenly rose off the board and was unceremoniously dropped into the water, like when she was force-fed gillyweed and thrown into the nearest body of water. The surprise, the deja vu, and the water gave her enough of a rush to morph long webbed hands and feet with some gills to match. Now she knew what she was doing, and her attitude roared back into full force.

She followed the wave and shadow of a surfboards surrounded by limbs bobbing on the surface: Abby's pink butterfly butt next to a pair of long lanky shins, Veronica's petite body at the edge of a surfboard next to a pair of strong and tan calves, a few feathers floating next to a splashing foot, and a pair of legs hanging over the side of a surfboard with the rippling blur of a wizard in a Stetson hat that suddenly flew off his head as her surfboard bucked and knocked him into the water.

Completely gillyweed-symptom free, Naomi immediately emerged from the water a moment later, grabbing the cowboy hat as she proudly slid on top of the board as bubbles still boiled around the recently dunked wizard.

She gave a wide white smile at Ronni and Abby, "Have fun?" her voice lilted facetiously as she then turned her attention to the remainding batch of surfers, "And what of you grindylows--" her voice grated with suspicion with an arching brow, "You speak English too?" They all deserved to get chased by a sea serpent, as far as Naomi was concerned. [1]
