Everything was so dark, but she could feel the world moving. For the first time in a long time, she felt vulnerable, out of balance and even a little scared. Trying to sort things out, she was vaguely aware of another body coming toward her. The words that came out of its mouth seemed unimportant, but the body saying it was important.
Unconsciously, she reached out to the body, and the moment her fingers grazed something, she could see again, though her eyes weren't open. It was a face familiar to her; dimpled chin, blue and pink eyes, black shaggy hair with blue tips, shapely lips and a light about it that made everything else in her world seem insignificant. Then he spoke, and the sound was beyond that of anything beautiful she had ever experienced.
Feeling overwhelming ease wash over her, she fell into his welcoming arms, allowing him to hold her against his chest. She had never been so comfortable in her entire life than she was in that moment. Taking a deep breath, the smell of lemongrass and clary-sage filled her senses; causing her heart to momentarily stop beating. Glancing up at the only voice her heart could recognize, she felt at home. Leaning up and pressing her lips to his, the light within him shined so bright he put the sun to shame.
The image of a fox chasing a wolf crossed her closed eyes, shifting into the fox stopping to watch the rising dawn approach the forest. Suddenly, the wolf was all alone and afraid, wishing the fox would be there with it. Every fiber of her being screamed for the wolf to run back to the fox before it was too late.
Aurora awoke with a start, clutching the heart-shaped pendant that always dangled around her neck. Sitting up violently, her eyes darted around her darkened room for something, something that would make her feel at ease. Scrambling out of the covers rather awkwardly, her feet carried her to the desk. More specifically, the letter sent by her best friend earlier that day. Reading it again, Aurora felt her heartbeat returning to normal, and her breathing slowing.
Sitting back on the edge of her bed, she spent the next several minutes staring into nothingness, unable to sort through the various emotions and thoughts coursing through her.
"What does it mean?" she spoke into the darkness softly and a bit hoarsely. What was it she was feeling? What did the dream mean? Is there something she's missing? Aurora suddenly felt scared in that moment... but from what?
