[June 17th] The Hippo and the Rat.

Bethany Grieves
OOC: Creative name referring to their respective Patronus animals. Hoppos are adorable. ♥
Bumped forward a day to save a headache later. Was the 16th, now it's the 17th.

TIME: Mid-Morning  //  DATE: June 17th  //  PLACE: Magical Menagerie, Diagon Alley
The Magical Menagerie in Diagon Alley, London. This place was known to hold every sort of animal in existance (as long as it was relatively legal to sell, that is...). It was also the place to go to buy supplies for these animals; food, cages, accesories, the whole she-bang. This was probably why Bethany Grieves had chosen to drop by for a visit, with her pet rat, Woo, nested comfortably on her shoulder, just inside the neck of the hoodie she wore.

Her foster parents were... somewhere in Diagon, so she considered herself perfectly fine to wander. At this point, the poor adults had given up on trying to keep her nearby anyways; she was always bound to wander off eventually.

It was a good time of day, earlier in the morning which meant the usual crowd was dwindling, leaving Beth plenty of room to move about as she headed for her destination, pocket money secured and faithful companion chittering wildly the entire way.

Finding the shop was no problem. She slipped in through the front door and admired the familliar scenerey; cages with multi-colored cats hanging around them, pestering the poor things inside. Tanks with frogs and newts in murky but somehow healthy swamp water. Birds and bats of every kind perched easily in their respective positions. At the side of the store, a desk with a clerk, or store owner maybe, though Bethany paid him no mind.

She went straight for the empty, ready-to-sell cages.

She'd be in Hogwarts soon and a tiny muggle cage just wouldn't do for Woo's safety. She needed something much more... professional. Much more magical. She went straight for a small box cage with old looking black wires and a solid base. It had a built-on water bottle (which looked almost like an hour glass) and a food dish in the corner. The feel of the cage was sturdy despite it's worn appearance and Beth couldn't help but imagine Woo happily chewing away but getting nowhere close to escaping.

A good cage, but probably not something she could afford on pocket change. The girl sighed and continued on to the next cage down the line, a taller one with rustic gold wires and a metal base with wooden inlay. This one's even more expensive... She thought bitterly as she fiddled with the door of it, not liking how easily it came open. I don't see why, though. It's rubbish compared to the cheaper one. Glamour, she decided. It was all about the look of it. Well, at least she knew what cage she wouldn't be getting...

Obderedria entered the Menagerie shop once she was sure no one sketchy looking was inside.

Summers usually meant boring. Being stuck at home, nothing but the telly or her books or daydreams about traveling with Beverly. And Puddin', of course. But that was going to change when she found out she was a witch and had a year of wizard school under her belt. There was a magical district right within London and it sounded like a more exciting place to visit during the weekdays when her mother Patricia was at the court commons.

Convincing her mum had been the lengthy part. Yes mum, I will look both ways when crossing the street, always keeping to the crosswalks. I will be fine in the Diagon Alley. No mum, I'll be able to enter on my own with a wand. Yes mum, I'll be home before five. I'll take the cell phone, mum, but I don't think I can use it in the Alley. I'll call you before I enter and when I leave, I'll call you at the office. And at lunch. I'll leave Diagon to call you again but I'll head right back into the Leaky Cauldron for lunch. I'll be fine walking there, mum, it's like when I walked the five blocks to primary school. I shouldn't have any danger in the alley, everyone is rather friendly since it's such a small community. No mum, if I need to I can cast Flipendo on them, that knocks them over. Besides Puddin' will be with me (not that a runt kitten could do anything). Love you too, mum, see you at dinner. Yes, I have cash on me and I have the slip for the transfer account at the goblin bank.

Obderedria had a few wizard coins transfered over from pounds. Part of prepping her for school last year was a 'slush' or whatever they called it where a set amount was set aside for her schooling to earn interest and that made the conversion of muggle money to wizard coin easier. It was all very confusing, Patricia had the income that contributed to the fund but Obderedria was the witch so it was hers and she could draw out a select amount each week. Supposedly it was kept somewhere on the ground floor, the real vaults being hundreds of miles into the earth accessible by roller coaster. At least that's the image that came to mind.

Obderedria entered the Menagerie, clutching a wicker basket that Puddin' in it. She'd managed to get the lid to fit proper,  Puddin' was still able to breathe through the gaps in the wicker. Although he was rambunctious, tired of being cooped up. But she didn't want to loose him, especially in a store like this. There were snails in enchanted glass boxes that would disintegrate at the snails' slime trail. Rats playing hopscotch, a fluffy bunny that sneezed and turned into a top hat.

She was looking for pet food. There wasn't really Kitten Kibble available for pets at Hogwarts and she didn't want to think of Puddin' catching mice all the time. If she couldn't find anything she might break down and take the spare blender to school next term, however she would get that to work, and have Heliotrope catch fish for her to make Puddin' fish paste. That is, if her roommate didn't eat them raw first.

When looking for pet food, Obderedria noticed a young girl looking at cages. She had a rat nestled in hood at the back of her neck. She couldn't place the girl. She must go to Hogwarts, she had yet to meet a kid that didn't, but with so many students at the school and the houses it was hard to know of everybody.

"Excuse me," Obderedria said. "I don't think I recognize you. I'm Obderedria, but call me Drea, it's much simpler."

Bethany Grieves
OOC: Bethany sucks at hiding amusement. Apparently it's harder to hide good emotions. Short post, sorry.
The last thing Bethany expected that day was to bump into a girl with polka-dot hair. She heard someone talking to her and glanced around curiously, opening her mouth to answer but only getting a tiny sound out before she had to snap her mouth shut completely to avoid laughing, but not until she'd done a double take.

When she was sure the laughter wouldn't bubble up, she swallowed and cleared her throat, a hint of a grin still pricking at her lips as she turned to face the girl.

"Pleasure to m-meet you, Drea. I'm Bethany." A slight studder showed that Beth wasn't very good at hiding amusement, though she made up for it quickly. "Um.. I don't mean to offend or anything but... why.. why is your hair all dotty like that?" Okay, Bethany also failed horribly at minding her manners. She covered her mouth to hide the stupid grin there and tried to cover up her mistake... yet again.

"Don't get me wrong, I like it, but it's certainly not something one would expect to see." She giggled softly, not at all meaning to offend the poor girl. "I'm.. gonna stop talking now." Good idea.

Woo, meanwhile, was far too busy trying to figure out what was in the basket to notice the strange hair color. She was up on Beth's shoulder, her front paws tucked into her chest, leaning over to investigate. The strange petstore they were in made it impossible to judge by scent, so her less-than-perfect eyesight would have to do. Fortunately for Woo, the box was closed tight, meaning the nasty cat inside wouldn't be much of a danger to her for right now.

Obderedria had her bottom lip hidden by her top row of teeth. It had to be expected, having polka-dotted hair. She had gotten used to walking around gazing at no one or nothing in particular to try to ignore the rubbernecking of passerby. It was worse when the normal people, er muggles, looked at it. Usually. In the wizarding world not as much, maybe because they thought it was a fashion choice or that it could be easily done with the right spell. Didn't she hear something about the OWL Charms finals having something about recoloring apples with orange and green spots? She wondered if their Charms professor had added that to the test because of her.

"Um," Obderedria gripped a lock of hair absent-mindedly. "It's a long story. But simply, back when I was in muggle primary, I once tried to dye my hair green for St. Patrick's day. And, not all of it washed out..."[1]

At the very least Bethany was finding humor in a non-teasing way. Such had been the first month at Hogwarts until her hair became the norm after part-mermish first years, color changing spells and stuff blowing up.

"I haven't seen you at school though." She thought they were really close in age but she had first years classes with about every house and knew her peers at least by face. "Have you started yet?"

Another giggle escaped as the girl explained, then Bethany caught her wits and settled down, nodding at the 'long story' bit, and though a touch curious, not delving any deeper. "Oh, okay then." She smiled reassuringly. "It's cool."

Then the girl, Drea, went on to mention school and how she'd never seen Beth around before. "Oh, I'm starting in September. It'll be my first year at Hogwarts." She tilted her head and subconciously brought a hand up to pet Woo, who quickly forgot about the basket in favor of attention.

"That means you're in Hogwarts too, right? What house are you? What year?" Curiousity abound, mixed with that innocent excitement of any up-and-coming first year. Beth kept her composure for the most part but her tone when asking pitched a bit, betraying her 'clever rouse'.

This was because her mind was already buzzing with possible houses that this Drea girl could've been in; Hufflepuff seemed the most likely. She struck Beth as a good girl with a fun spark to her (as decided by her hair) and an obvious niceness to her that she couldn't seem to find in a Slytherin (the few she'd run into over time) or Ravenclaw (who generally didn't socialize with instant smiles, or so she'd seen.) It wasn't completely obvious but Bethany liked guessing other students' houses before finding out for real, like a game of sorts.

Ah, she was going to Hogwarts in the fall. "I just finished my first year of school. I'm in Hufflepuff, and all my roommates are nice." Even Helio had her charm. Obderedria hoped Bethany had good roommates in the fall too. "One of them is named Mary Beth but I don't think she's anything like you. She's kind, of course, but she's not ashamed to say naughty words..."

"But school is fun, I suppose it's how much you know about magic going in. The Defense and Charms professors are kinda tough," rather tough but she didn't want to scare Bethany, "but the other teachers are nice. And the meals are excellent, and all the figures in the paintings move and there's even a giant squid in the lake. My roommate Heliotrope says it's ticklish."

"You must already have a guess what house you'll be in. Magical family? I was mostly raised in muggle London just before school."

Bethany had guessed right. This girl was a Hufflepuff and she'd just finished her first year too. The rest of the idle chit-chat was tuned out, until she mentioned classes and their professors. She nodded, but paid no mind to the talk of food and her rambling about the obviously magical paintings in there. She knew all this already.

Well, except for the squid being ticklish. She hadn't known that before.

"You must already have a guess what house you'll be in. Magical family?---"

At first Bethany had been listening and paying attention just fine. But Beth had a trigger word and Drea had used it. Family. Anything after that was lost to the wind as the smaller girl took a step back and that smile vanished.

When she spoke again, her voice was trained and flat, unnatural. "I... should go." She'd already taken another two steps away from the girl, turning to leave though she really didn't want to go. She liked Drea but the mention of family had reminded her...

The change is Bethany was quick. Suddenly she seemed withdrawn, stone faced, awkwardly stepping forward and back. "I... should go," she muttered.

"Bethany?" Obderedria was crestfallen as the girl walked off. "Did I say something wrong? I'm sorry!" It looked the jerkiness of her motions had caused her rat to loose balance where it was perched. "Mind your rat!" She didn't want to see it fall off.

Bethany was already a few steps away, walking briskly for the exit. Drea called after her, apologizing and noticing when poor Woo was jerked around. Bethany stopped, looking back at the girl for a moment and cupping her hands over her rat. ...she didn't mean it. She doesn't know. Beth reminded herself, remembering what the healer had told her about honest mistakes.

She came back over slowly. "...You didn't say anything wrong." She murmured. "I don't talk about that, though."

Then, a moment later, she smiled again, empty look washed away cleverly. "Drea, do you want to hang out with me today? I just need to go talk to my Foster mum. We could go buy lunch?" All was forgiven.

"...You didn't say anything wrong. I don't talk about that, though."

It took Obderedria a moment to figure out what Bethany meant. After some thinking she realized Bethany had withdrawn herself when she asked about whether her family was magical or not. The phrase 'Foster mum' was certainly telling. Obderedria thought for a moment about her family, the fact that she didn't know who her father was. Being raised from birth with just a single parent, and being used to that, must be different then whatever Bethany had experienced.

But Obderedria was happy things smoothed over again. "Oh sure, I'd love to!" She tried to think of places she had been to last year. "There's the Cauldron, or a few other cafes, or Flortescue's if you just want an ice cream."

At least Drea seemed to know when not to pry. Beth smiled and nodded at her suggestions. "It's summer time, right? So lets go get an ice cream. I'll pay." A bright glint came back to her eyes, the sign that the trouble had vanished behind them. She turned to leave again, but this time, she waited for Drea to follow.

She wasn't entirely sure where this new friendship would lead, sure that she'd become a Ravenclaw come autumn. A Ravenclaw and a Hufflepuff? I'm sure it could work. I'd be more surprised if she were a Slytherin or something. The thought of cute, bubbly Drea being a Slytherin was a laughable one, as shown by the tiny giggle that escaped the girl as she wandered towards the entrance of the shop.

"But first we'll have to find Angela. She's my foster mum." Beth commented idly. "She's nice, so she'll probably let me spend my allowance, even if I'm not buying things for school or clothes." Which was the usual deal for Beth; allowances were for important things and not to be wasted. However, Drea was important, so hopefully Angela would agree.

"Sure, an ice cream would be great. I like the ones at Fortescue's, they don't melt."

Obderedria knew the importance of checking in, she had promised her mother that she would check in too. Although Flortescue's was dead center in the middle of the Alley, so all the magic of the place wouldn't let the cell phone work.

"I just had a little spending money with me too," Obderedria said. "I won't need anything new for school until the class material lists come out in late July. So I've got some money of my own if needed."  She followed her new friend out of the shop.
