Physical Description: Church stands at 5'8.5" tall, and is incredibly thin for his size, at a mere 115lbs. He is very tan, and his hair is about as dark a shade of brown as you can get before black; though it looks much lighter in bright light. Lately, he has been letting it grow out, parting it with a fringe over his left eye
His face is pointed, with fairly well defined cheek bones. Church's eyes are a somewhat bright shade of brown, though like his hair it's hard to see unless in direct lighting. Both his ears are pierced with small, pink, 3mm gauges. And though his eyesight is near perfect, Church always wears his glasses.
When dressing, Church usually aims for a more dressed-up appearance, collared shirts, ties, and black vests; although he generally wears such clothes with black jeans and simple tennis shoes. On occasion, if he is feeling particularly lazy, or just wants to put a new shit on display, he will wear tee's with logos of Muggle pop culture.
Personality Description: Church has an personality that takes large swings to both end of the pendulum.
To the casual observer, and to those who don't actually know him as well as they think, he is cold, apathetic, fairly arrogant, and overly sarcastic. He has tendencies to tease, and make rather cruel comments on someones situations, bluntly stating his opinion. Never one to sugar coat anything, he believes that they should know exactly what he thinks, and that anything else is no better than a lie. Often this leads to fighting amongst him and his friends.
However, this is essence a facade put up more to please the masses and fit in; simply playing a part that the world wants to see him in. In truth, he is merely an introvert in disguise, extremely depressed, always lonely, merely doing his best to play along with society, hoping no one will notice that he is anything above average.
Hidden deep beneath the almost ruthless exterior, and despite the cold depression, he is very kind, compassionate, and loyal to his friends. He will always put their problems, and the problems of others before his, regardless of how he feels at any given time. There are, however, very few people he considers to be his friends, and even fewer he fully trusts. Al others are merely kept for the social facade.
Like all Ravenclaws Church is very bright, and easily gets high marks in class, though he often hides such things, not wanting to bring notice to himself as and intellectual.
He loathes to talk about his problems with others, not wanting to burden them with trivial issues. This hate is second only hate of being physically touched by anyone.
History: Born to two parents of no particular consequence, Church began life in an almost perfect sense. His family was not rich in any sense of the word, but still they were happy, and that was all that really mattered.
Until, of course, when he was four, and displayed magical talent for the first time ever. His mother, a Muggleborn witch (who hadn't told her husband that she was one) was delighted that her son was a wizard. His Muggle father was not, and for whatever reason, saw it as an aberration.
This lead to a very emotional divorce, which at the age of four, Church unfortunately blamed himself for; not old enough to fully grasp the entire depth of the problem. And his father constantly blaming him for it didn't help either.
Through some strange and tragic turn of fate, his father managed to obtain full custody of Church.
From the age of four to nine, Church was often neglected, and was constantly blamed for the divorce by his father. At any sign of magical potential, and at any mistake that was made by the boy, the man would often verbally lash out at the boy.
Finally, a few months after turning nine, his mother was able to legally take Church from the monster that was his father. She only wished she could do it sooner, but from what she understood, the person meant to be investigating it was constantly told by family members of the father that he was a good man. It wasn't until Church himself told teachers at the Muggle school he attended that the case went anywhere.
From then on he began living with his mother in London, no longer afraid to use his abilities. though the life that could have been his was forever lost.
Naturally, when he received his letter to Hogwarts, he was fairly excited to go (though he regretted leaving his Muggle friends), and read his school books the day he got them from Diagon Alley. He was quiet at first, usually keeping to himself and simply watching the other students. They all seemed so happy, and he envied them all for it.
Finally, he decided that he'd get nowhere in life sulking on his own, and so he stopped merely watching the others, and began studying. He saw that people who seemed the most confident seemed to be the happiest, have the most friends. So that's what he did.
And with luck, it worked. It didn't matter who the person was, or what house they were in. For the most part, Church got along with them.
In the summer between school years, Church continued to spend time with his old Muggle friends. Flat out lying about where he went to school, he claimed he received a full scholarship to a private boarding school. For his friends, this was enough, and they never pressed the issue. It didn't actually become an issue until the summer between his Fourth and Fifth years, when he began dating a girl he had known for quite some time.
Jeanette was really a very nice girl. She was clever, she was pretty, and she was able to look past Church's general cold behavior and crack the ice that gripped his heart. The two held a fairly strong relationship, she was the first person he told everything about his life too; at least, everything except that he was a wizard. They would often write long letters to each other, Church's mother being the go between as Church could only send his by owl while at school. And seemingly every minute of the days he was home on break they spent together.
For a little over a year and a half this worked quite well. But in the months leading up to the Easter holiday, Church noticed less and less correspondence coming from the girl he loved. Not quite sure what was happening with her, he returned to his home expecting to be able to sit and talk it out with her.
He was walking down the street to her house when one of his friends intercepted him. And he told Church what had happened. Jeanette had met someone else months ago, and she had even started dating the new boy. For a moment Church was visibly upset, failing to keep his composure he turned and ran back to his house.
Without a second thought, Church wrote one final letter, once again taking the blame for something he had no control of. He then once again set out for his now ex-girlfriends house, and set the letter on the door step.
Upon returning to Hogwarts, Church seemed to all the world like he did when he left on break. It was as if nothing had changed, and that was the way Church liked it. The rest of the year seemed to fly by, Church continuing to keep up the facade that he had become so used to.
The only thought of dread in his mind is returning to London and potentially having to deal with his Muggle life.
How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Church was chosen for Ravenclaw because beneath his pretend arrogance, beneath his cold depression, he is an intellectual. He loves the seeking of knowledge, and relishes in an almost sickening way that he is smarter than most everyone he meets.
Writing Sample:
Sum up your character in one paragraph: Church is, in short, an extraordinary person pretending to be average. Incredibly intelligent, Church has learned very well how to act as if he is just your average teenage boy. While acting as if he cares about no one than himself, he is in fact rather insecure, and very depressed. Very few have ever broken the ice and seen all of him. And those few are the ones he is most loyal to.
