In Character

Full Character Name: Bethany Greives
Character Birthday & Age: April 13th, 1998 - 11 Years Old
City & Country of Birth: Manchester, North-West England
Pureblood, Halfblood or Muggleborn: Halfblood
House & Year: Ravenclaw First Year

Wand:
A Spiraled Shaft wand, ten and one half inches long and made from pliable Ivy wood with a Demiguise Hair core. An easy-going personality but is determined.

Physical Description:
Bethany has the typical pale skin tone of most native Brits, Copper-Hazel eyes, expressive and bright and Auburn hair with natural blond and brown highlights mixed in. She has slender hips and shoulders and a touch of baby fat in her cheeks and tummy (though it's starting to go away and is barely noticeable as is). Beth stands about 5'2" currently with plenty of room to grow and she weighs in at 98 pounds.

She's normally seen with a quiet, far-off smile but bright, alert eyes and she moves with every step looking intentional and well planned.

Bethany wears her hair at shoulder length, full but straight and often clipped back with her mother's old hairpin (it has an old Ravenclaw emblem on a white gold clip and was a gift from her husband on their wedding day).

Her outfits are generally well kept and ironed, though there are the occasional hand-me-downs, such as her father's scarf (again, Ravenclaw) which is well worn but still presentable. Her preferred outfits generally include a pair of dark jeans (when she's not in uniform) and a respectable blouse, either light gray or pale green in color.

Personality Description:
Calm, collected and a constant thinker. Bethany always has her head in the game, constantly thinking and sometimes over-thinking things. She's got a kind heart and doesn't often break many rules. Intelligent and clean but with that childish flare about her that just makes everything she does seem almost completely innocent.

Bethany has the occasional tendency to respond poorly to hectic situations, however, generally becoming the quiet by-stander unless the situation involves her specifically. It takes her a while to let people in, quite often shutting them out when they try. She shows various signs of stress-induced depression if one looks closely, such as a lack of inspiration during activities and poor effort in participation during group outings.

She also rarely leaves the Ravenclaw house during free hours and the weekend, preferring the solitude of her books and writing over the company of others. It's not easy for Beth to make friends but when she does, they're generally the type that last for years, if not a lifetime.

Bethany also has trust issues, as depicted above; this leads to a general response of 'one strike', where if someone manages to befriend her but then breaks her trust in some serious way, she often doesn't ever trust them again.

Bethany's also very artistic. She can draw still-life sketches very well and loves to paint or sculpt whenever she can. She's incredibly interested in Animals, generally the mythical kind though muggle creatures fascinate her almost as much.

Her favorite animals are rodents, specifically Rats like the fancy rat she owns named Woo.

Bethany's favorite color is Orange, though she could never explain why that is. Her least favorite color is Red.

Her favorite subject is Transfiguration, though Herbology is a very close second. Her least favorite is Defense against the Dark Arts.

Her favorite food is Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches. She absolutely hates Spinach, though.

Bethany is allergic to Bee, Wasp and Hornet stings. She has Hay Fever (allergy to pollen) and is also allergic to Blackberries.

History:
Bethany was born and raised in Manchester, though her parents both came from Ireland. She grew up in a suburban area where all the houses had white picket fences around their lush front lawns and wide back yards. Her own house was shared between herself, her wizard father Fredrick, her muggle mother Sandra (married happily for fourteen years) and her older non-magical brother Nathaniel (who was four years old when Bethany was born). For the first six years of her life, she lived happily. She and her brother got along well. She was also Daddy's little girl.

Then came a time when their mother's brother, George, and his long-time girlfriend Naomi, came to live with them after going bankrupt and losing their property. Of course, both knew of the wizarding world through Beth's father, but neither cared to hear of it.

Especially not Uncle George.

George had a drinking problem... and he was an angry drunk. Fortunately, he often kept his bad-guy drinking life separate from his home life with his sister's family.

Unfortunately, that didn't count for anything come time to babysit. Whenever Naomi and Beth's parents went out (shopping, important meetings, weekend retreats, ect.), George was left to babysit Bethany and Nathaniel. None of them were happy with this, because George had a temper. He never hurt the children, but often times he'd yell, snap or otherwise verbally torment both young half-bloods. Bethany and Nathaniel spent a lot of time in their room on those nights. Often times without their supper.

It was New Years Eve when Bethany's life took a turn for the worst. She was only seven years old when it happened. Driving home from a party just on the other side of town, Fred and Sandra's cab was cut off at an intersection and sent into the ditch. That ditch, unfortunately, was a lot deeper than expected. The cab driver was dead before the ambulance came. Bethany's parents were in critical condition.

Sandra died on the way to the hospital.

Fred died the next day after spending the night in a coma.

The accident tore the rest of the family apart. Nathaniel, now a teenager, quickly became clinically depressed. Bethany shut down and began shutting out everyone who tried to comfort her. Both kids were given to their uncle George after a long custody battle with Fred's sister (their estranged aunt).

George broke up with Naomi after she began noticing the way he constantly blamed the kids for the accident. This didn't help the already unstable man. He seemed to forget the kids needed anything other than food and water, and at times, even that was forgotten. When he wasn't neglecting them completely, he was either out on the town (leaving Nathaniel in charge of Bethany) or busy pinning the blame of his troubles on the two children.

Two years later (Bethany, 9 and Nathaniel, 13), the kids moved out of their parents' house with their uncle, relocating to a smaller townhouse inside the noise of the downtown district. The move didn't sit well with Nathaniel, who unfortunately became depressed as a result. Just when things were bad enough, Nathaniel began staying out all night every few days. Where he went and what he did would forever remain a mystery, because (as if to pour salt on an open wound) during one of his late-night outtings, his parents' fate caught up with him; he'd been riding his bike down the main road when a delivery truck swerved (the driver said it was to avoid a pot hole in the road) and sent the boy into intensive care.

He luckily survived and made a full recovery in just a few months. It left him more ambitious, a little less reckless but a lot more... distant. This forced a wedge between the siblings, leaving Bethany to wonder what had become of her older brother. She couldn't understand that he was just dealing with the stress and hardships the same way any muggle teen would have in his situation. She went on not understanding, though they had their happier moments together all the same.

The ministry of magic soon learned of the neglect and turmoil that the children were living with and officials came by on Bethany's tenth birthday to sweep her and her brother away to a foster home in another part of town, where her new foster parents were in fact a magical family themselves. This is where she learned the in's and out's of wizardry, to prepare for enrollment into Hogwarts as previously paid for in her parents' Will.

She spent her time after that dealing with child therapists (muggles, as Bethany wasn't quite prepared for a full-on magical recovery yet). Their efforts were, for the most part, fruitless. She'd been making a slow recovery. Later on, Healers came to take a crack at it. They seemed to work after some months of constant observation and Bethany began to be more social, smiling more often and no longer hiding her talents and aspirations. She didn't even seem all too distraught the day her brother moved up and out of fostercare without her, striking out to live on his own at a young age.

However, she never did like talking about it after that. A touch-and-go topic, if you will.

She joined Hogwarts in 2009 and was quickly shuffled along into Ravenclaw, like her father before her. She quickly readopted her quiet routine of sticking to her books again, though she still wears a happy-to-meet-you smile whenever in public.

Note: Her pet rat, Woo, was a gift to her from her foster parents for her 11th birthday.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?:
Mostly in memory of her deceased father. Truthfully, Bethany would've done better in Hufflepuff but she was dead set on being in Ravenclaw like Fred was.

She does sport some good Ravenclaw qualities though; she's smart, inventive and creative, though quiet and soft-spoken.

Writing Sample:
As the first years all filed into the main hall for sorting and to sit in on the opening ceremonies, Bethany dawdled behind at a snail's pace. She'd refused to hand over her father's scarf, despite being in her school robes for the sorting. It was the only thing she had left of him and she refused to give it up when it came time to sit under the infamous sorting hat. She hoped it would convince the magical hat to place her in Ravenclaw, where her father had been during his years at Hogwarts.

Now they were lining up in a mangled group of short, tall, fat and skinny kids, all anxious and chattering about which house they'd be sorted into. Bethany stood in the back, though she itched to be up front, one of the first. She clutched her father's scarf tightly in her hands, holding it to her chest as one at a time, kids were called up and sorted.

Albert, Briars, Cromwell, Donells, Ethen, Farway...

"Bethany Greives! Please step up to the sorting hat!"

No! I'm not ready! Bethany thought in protest as her feet, as if with a mind of their own, dragged her up to the front of the hall slowly. She shuffled up to the chair, head low and eyes downcast, her entire body stiff with nerves, her mind buzzing. What if it's Slytherin? Or Hufflepuff! Dad would've been embarassed! I don't want to be in Slytherin! Or Hufflepuff!

"Please sit down, miss Greives. There's absolutely nothing to worry about." The older woman spoke softly, so only Beth could hear. The young halfblood looked up with wide eyes, as if surprised to find that this woman, probably a professor of some sort, had recognised her fears. Slowly, timidly, she nodded and shuffled over, perching on the chair and staring down at her lap.

Her father's scarf was bunched into a ball in figity hands by the time the old hat was rested atop the poor girl's head.

"Another little mouse, hm...? Am I really that frightening?" The hat murmured boredly, as if bemused by her pathetic shivering. "Certainly not a Griffindor girl, though you've got the right heart for it... I'll say..."

Bethany closed her eyes tight and squeezed the scarf in her hands even tighter. Her mind screamed which house she wanted, over and over and over, as if it would make up the hat's mind somehow. For what seemed like an hour, the hat quietly considered which house. After only a few seconds, however, a soft 'humph' was heard above and then the hat had made its decision.

"Ravenclaw!"

Bethany almost screamed. All of her fear washed out of her in an instant and she went lax in the chair, opening her eyes to stare out at the applauding crowd of students watching on. Over at the Ravenclaw table, they were going nuts, estatic to have yet another student sorted into their house. As soon as the old hat was off her head (a hat in which she thanked a couple dozen times excitedly), Bethany was darting over to the Ravenclaw table, excited and thrilled to be a part of her father's old house.

She just knew that somewhere, where ever the dead went after they died, her father was just as excited as she was. She pictured him popping open a bottle of whiskey and pouring himself a celebratory drink, toasting her and cheering her on from afar. Ravenclaw. She'd never been so happy in her life.

Sum up your character in one paragraph:
A quiet, intelligent, creative girl with auburn hair and amber colored eyes. Bethany longs for the day when she'll be able to break out of her depression and interact with the rest of her peers without fear and distrust. She clings to the hope that someday she'll make her deceased parents proud and become a respected witch through Hogwarts.

Obderedria "Drea" Pienas
Hufflepuff First Year
Notable Threads- [1]
Bethany met Drea during the summer of 2009, before her first year of Hogwarts. They met in the Magical Menagerie in Diagon Alley where the two quickly became friends despite a rough start. Even though they're in seperate houses, Beth sees Drea as an exception to house rivalries and respects her, polka-dot hair and all.

Figaro "Fig" Sellaphix
Hufflepuff Fifth Year
Notable threads- [1]
A much more fitting name for this relationship would be "lost puppy". Bethany follows Fig around like such, seeing him as her own personal hero. After he saved her from a creepy man in Knockturn Alley, Beth's been his ever-faithful follower. She's also friends with his little brother, Frank.

Tapendra "Tap" Trishna
Head of Ravenclaw
Astronomy Professor
Notable threads- [1]
Upon learning that this 'old man' was a professor of Astrology -and- the head of Ravenclaw house at Hogwarts, Bethany instantly fell in love. Not the typical 'romantic' kind of love, but the adoration and admiration that came with having a crush on the teacher. She looks up to Tap as a role model and hangs on his every word whenever they talk.

Additional Notes on Bethany

  • Bethany has a very low sense of pride and it takes some praise to brighten her spirits on a bad day. Usually praising her artwork or musical talents will do the trick but praising the care and attention she pays to her rat, Woo, will go a lot farther.
  • Bethany's pet rat, Woo, was a gift from her foster parents for her eleventh birthday. She's a white fancy rat with a black mask on her face and is about a foot long once fully grown.
  • Bethany doesn't like talking about her family very much. Bringing it up may result in her shutting down completely. Nathaniel is actually a bigger trigger for her than her parents, as she's heart-broken that he'd leave her in her time of need.
