These windows are foggy. [Waker]

on March 31, 2009, 10:15:33 PM

Early Evening, May 2nd

It had been ages since Wesley had had the time to sit down in the common room and just socialize with her housemates. She felt that it was time she did just that, so as she made her way to her favorite sofa near the fire, she had little thought about who she might meet today. She had one friend in mind, who she hadn't had time to just be friends with in a while.

The day before, when she saw Waker in the Transfiguration corridor Wesley had diliberately walked over and requested that Waker meet her here today to just chat. Wesley had been to the infirmary twice this week for extreme migranes. Hoping, beyond hope that it wasn't serious, or too serious for magic anyway, she sat comfortably on the sofa and watched a couple of first years argue over candy.

As Wesley sat on the age-old sofa she let her mind wander to things outside the castle. Was the lake water getting warm yet? How were the preparations going for Remembering day? Was she going to be in the choir for Remembering Day? Should she go to the dormitory and bring down her homework and get a head start? As her mind lazily drifted from thought to thought, Wesley felt her head fall a little as she dozed off.

As her head hit her chest for the third or fourth time, Wesley jerked her chin up and looked around, hoping no one had seen her. Of course she couldn't get that lucky. The first years who had been arguing over candy earlier were now having a great time laughing at the silly looking sixth year who couldn't keep her head up. Wesley looked at her watch, she'd only been sitting for five minutes. A little tired she moved around into a less comfortable position, hoping that could keep her awake.

Having just spent two hours dodging hexes while demonstrating Shield Charms to a pair of younger student, Waker was more than ready to sit down and have a chat with someone for whom she actually cared. Though studious as ever, Waker was certain that if her ears had to suffer the syllables in the word protego even once more, she might gouge them. Even as she stepped into the Common Room after a cluster of seventh years, the Nolan girl winced at the current password's likeness to that dreaded spell.

Eyes scouring the massive room for Wesley, Waker allowed herself a tiny smile when she spotted her friend on a couch. The poor girl looked quite worn out and presumably wary of the time, if the glance at her watch was any indication. Waker reflexively peeked down at her own before moving forward-- just to be certain she wasn't late. Her shoulders relaxed noticeably as she approached her longtime roommate. Right on time.

"Did you get beat with a broom?" She asked jokingly as she sank into the sofa beside Wesley. "Or have you been napping? You look exhausted." Waker continued to study her friend's face as if she were a complex Potions formula in a textbook-- one whose mystery needed to be solved. She reclined just a little, absently smoothing the lines of her blazer and letting her eyes dart momentarily toward the massive wall-length window where the sun could be seen melting into the horizon.

Wesley felt her lips part in an honest smile. Looking up she watched Waker join her on the sofa. She looked Waker over quickly, noticing the signs of exhaustion from a long day. Wesley tucked a stray bit of hair behind her ear and rubbed her head, just behind her temples. If those migranes didn't start to weaken soon, Wesley felt she'd probably end up spending another night in the infirmary. Shaking it off, Wesley adjusted her wrist-watch.

"I feel like just that. I feel as if I've taken a beating, and my darn head just will not give me a break." Wesley crossed her legs and smoothed out her skirt. Laying her arm across the back of the sofa she let her head rest easily in her hand. Smiling at Waker she commented, "You look a little beat yourself. Long day?"

Wesley let her eyes wander the room again. Noticing the first years still staring in the girls' direction. Rolling her eyes once she turned her attention back to Waker. Letting her fingers run through her hair she felt her eyes droop again.

Waker swished her lips to the side, considering Wesley's words. "Maybe you're getting a cold. That happens a lot before exams-- stress and not enough sleep, you know. Have you visited the nurse?" This, of course, was often Waker's advice for people who seemed down or on the verge of sickness. With her parents being muggle doctors, it was only logical. Ironically enough, while Waker religiously downed her vitamins and measured out cough syrup when her throat felt itchy, she was also the sort of girl who often stubbornly refused to discuss her more personal matters. She had few qualms with visiting the nurse for a routine potion, though.

"Or... maybe you just need the weekend," she suggested in a light mutter, her gaze drawing back to her friend. She reflected Wesley's smile. It was nice-- soothing, really-- to be able to talk calmly with someone she trusted, even if they were both feeling tired. "There aren't enough Friday nights on a calendar," she lamented-- almost uncharacteristically-- and shook her head. Sadly, many of those Fridays were spent wrapped up in books. But the fact that was Friday night now was a relief. No class in the morning was one less thing to worry over. It wasn't as if Waker was exactly the sort of girl who turned into a complete wild child as soon as the last bell rang (she was generally far from it), but she enjoyed her spare moments of freedom as much as anyone else her age... Even if they were frequently plagued by and planned around thoughts of the coming Monday.

Mirroring Wesley by crossing her own legs, the Nolan girl nodded once and thoroughly. "The longest this semester, I think. Whoever decided summer should have the most daylight wasn't thinking properly." Or, rather, whoever decided to plan their longest stretch of holiday during those precious months full of extra time.

Keenly following her friend's concentration to the smaller students sitting several seats away, Waker stared fixedly at them. The youngest children in Hogwarts sometimes had one of two unpleasant effects on the girl: they mildly annoyed her, or they mildly terrified her. Disquieting was the word. As an only child, and a precocious one at that, Waker had passed her immature prime before she had reached it (or so she liked to believe). Playful people were one thing; she liked a certain brand of humor, and often shared her own. But unnecessarily-evil munchkins who didn't know their wands from their quills? She wasn't so sure. "What are they staring at? Just wait until their O.W.L.'s in a few years," she mentioned darkly.

"So, do you have family visiting for the holiday?" She asked, peeling away from the candy-laden girls, and adopting a more pleasant tone. Given that Wesley was Pureblood, she wondered whether the girl's family might be joining the festivities. "And are you joining the choir? You should, you know... You'd be great. And it's much more glorious than giving tours, probably," she admitted with a smile.
