Ideal for Transfiguration and Dark Magic, particularly hexes and curses, but terrible for Healing.Due to the nature of its source, hag hair is often thought of as unreliable, even dangerous to those it has been gifted or passed on; they tend to be especially sinister when paired with yew or elder. In a perfect match, however, they make powerful wands, clearly favoring ingenuity. It reacts in the presence of hags or hag magic.Physical description. 5’7”, 126 lbs., 17 years old.Thin, almost wispy, were it not for the slim undertones of brawn, Gracie is hardly a looming presence in the Slytherin dungeons; her shoulders are slight, her curves marginally less so, and her face is all delicate edges and high cheekbones. Still, she’s hard to miss: despite her waif-like frame, she tends to carry herself with the confidence of someone taller, and her dark green eyes (usually lit with laughter) often make it hard not to notice her. Not with the way that mouth slowly curls into a grin, or how that voice rolls between a drawl and a purr. And that saunter…Yeah, she knows what she’s doing.Beneath the swagger, however, is a story mapped out in scars and ink. Thanks to a childhood of swimming, gymnastics, and lessons in self-defense, Gracie is more fit than she appears; with her sole, Muggle guardian being less tolerant about Wizarding things despite the company he keeps, much of her upbringing was grounded in strenuous physical education. Under his tutelage Gracie is a stealthy tracker, a crack shot, a resourceful trapper and more than capable of leaving another person crumpled on the ground –said skills rivaled only by her wandwork. The ink is more recent. Sometime during the summer of ‘09, Gracie gained not one, but several more tattoos: a tiny lizard on her right foot; a small octopus resting at her neck, favoring her left side as it occasionally curls a tentacle against her cheek; a vein of poppies along her left arm, tapering from shoulder to elbow, that bloom every morning; and a delicate blue butterfly fluttering at her back, on her right shoulder blade. While she stays at Hogwarts, she keeps them concealed; she plans on getting more this coming summer.Personality. Brave, adventurous, ingenious.Brilliant at improvising, terrible at following the rules, Gracie (‘ Aggy ’ to her granddad) is the youthful mastermind behind many of the Nightshades’ spells. Flirty, cheeky, and rebellious, she is also known for being a ridiculous fourteen-year-old at heart, but if you underestimate her as such...Well, that’s your own fault, really. For beneath that round-eyed look of innocence and the impish grins, Gracie is sharp as tack—so sharp, in fact, that some say it more than makes up for the lack of age and experience. As a student she’s a slacker, but in the way clever little shits often are: too lazy for lessons, too smart for rules. When she isn’t excelling in a class she likes, she spends her time doodling on the margins of her notes or pretending she’s paying attention. Now that Gracie is an adult witch in her own right, she’s... still lazy, yes, with enough snark to test even the most patient of saints, but she’s since come into her own. In her spare time she has thrived, studying old spells to invent new ones. She also makes her own rotgut, which has been likened to liquid cocaine in that imbibing enough can make a person hungover and high. Hogwarts, though, has yet to taste it.History. February 14, 1993; Ipswich, England.Born to a Halfblood mother and a Pureblood father, Gracie can, if asked, recall a short-lived time where her family hadn’t just been happy, but whole. In a modest house situated just at the edge of Ipswich, they were as happy as any family could be; although Tybalt had been resolutely cut off from the family fortune, Marceline’s own wealth translated well into a lifestyle that would keep them comfortable for years. And with her own budding career as a brilliant Potioneer, things, it had seemed, could only improve. They’d been happy, was the point. There had been laughter just as much as there’d been tears (her parents– though ridiculously, almost stupidly in love –made a tempestuous pair), but above all there had been a great deal of love, much of which had been spent on Gracie herself, the child who reminded one parent so much of the other with every squinty-eyed grin, every scratchy, delighted cackle and silly face she made. They loved her, and that was all that mattered, really.Even if, okay, they didn’t always seem to love each other. No, they weren’t perfect, but who was? Then, one day Mr. Howell walked out of the house and never came back.Still, at the tender age off six there was little that Gracie could do. No one would tell her where he had gone, or what had become of him (or, most importantly, if he was coming back at all) and the next thing she knew her mother had changed their name, packed up their things– sold the house that had been full of sunlight and spices and stories –and bundled them away to Devon to live with Gracie’s muggle grandfather, Eamon. There, Gracie continued to have a peaceful, if fatherless childhood; aside from the odd magical incident here and there, life continued on in a manner similar to the way it had before. A former soldier and an avid huntsman, Eamon would take it upon himself to teach the girl the fine points of tracking, fishing, and skinning—if only to get her away from a bitter woman and her mutterings. Then, on her eleventh birthday, Gracie received a letter, and the rest, as the saying goes, is history: a trip to Hogsmeade would produce a grouchy tomcat too smart for his own good; a Hat would have her Sorted into Slytherin; and too much time spent in the library would give way to an almost alarming interest in sentient books. In time, Hogwarts became a home away from home, a sort of ‘second skin’ that the girl would wear comfortably. By second year, she was well established among her Housemates and non-House peers, making a name for herself as one to watch out for. A versatile personality, she had friends from all sorts of social circles– although, strangely, belonged to none. But, of course, not everything would go as smoothly as she’d like. Forming close, tight friendships would be one of the few things that would probably never come naturally to her; getting close and staying close, she would find, were two different things. More often than not a casual acquaintance would stay just that—casual. Her lack of investment in House politics and drama (despite sometimes being the cause of said drama herself) has played a key role in this… as well as the friendships she has lost.During the Valentine’s Day Hogsmeade weekend of 2011, Gracie – along with thirteen other students – went missing, kidnapped by Lawrence Musgrave and taken to the bowels of the Department of Mysteries, where they underwent a series of experiments that some of them did not survive. How do you fit into your House? Really well, thanks.Despite a plainspoken (if not necessarily honest) manner, Gracie is, as far as most Slytherins go, a sterling example of the House’s other qualities– cunning, resourcefulness, and “a certain disregard for the rules,” to name a few. She also displays a surprising knack for leadership (when she can be bothered) and is rather manipulative (although you would hardly know it). But strongest of all is her sense of self-preservation; she’s good at reading people even when she can’t understand them, and uses it shamelessly to come out of things smelling like roses. In one paragraph...Gracie is, in short, green-eyed trouble with a capital T. Lazy but brilliant, witty and innovative, she’s the mastermind behind many a new spell and a cheerful participant in many a shenanigan. Nor does she care much for the rules and norms that hold others back; a free spirit through and through, she loves and let goes quite easily—although whether it’s because of an independent streak or her own abandonment issues remains to be seen. Nevertheless, she rules the Dueling Club and her Quidditch team capably, secure in her own rank and ability, and is quick to put an end to bullshit when it arises. After a few years of very late nights spent practicing in abandoned corridors, a haunted bathroom, and whatever empty, out-of-the-way classrooms she could find, she has just recently managed a complete transformation, albeit briefly. Since her success she’s been sneaking away to practice more and more often, but due to discretion her progress is as slow as ever; the changes are neither as fluid nor long-lasting as she would like and won’t be for some time. However, as of October 1st (‘09) she has found an instructor, and has undergone strenuous practice sessions every Hogsmeade trip since then. Due to proper training and her own affinity for Transfiguration, she has been making progress by leaps and bounds.Describe how the Special Ability influences their life. What do they use it for? While she’s still a beginner? Sneaking around, mostly (although don’t ask her how practical her form is), and always at night; despite the pale fur and stand-out spots that are better suited for a rocky, snowy landscape, it doesn’t matter nearly half as much in the dead of night and those on two legs have night vision worse than your own. When she becomes more adept at it Gracie will use her ability for more practical pursuits, such as travel, disguise, and—once she’s good enough—escape and self-defense.Because shape often defines thought, the longer she stays in her form while she's as inexperienced as she is, the longer certain… urges… linger after the shift—such as leaving scratch marks on on possessions made of wood (or the passing thought that marking her bed is a good idea). The late nights have left her a little tired-looking the following mornings, and because of this she’s taken to napping more and more often when her friends aren’t around. In this form, her eyes are greener-looking than those of normal snow leopards. As a snow leopard, she currently weighs 112lbs (51kg), at a length of 41” discounting her tail (37”).Write a description of what happens when your character is exhibiting this Special Ability.Gracie turns into a snow leopard. Until she’s more experienced at it, she suffers from moments of disorientation post-shift and during it, and transformation is still uncomfortable. It takes her some time to get used to her surroundings in this form. With the car belonging to a witch (or rather, a wizard, as it was in the case of Mr. Almasy), at least most, if not all, of the usual inconveniences no longer applied, she was sure. Night vision? Easily dealt with. Boredom? That, too. Sleep? She usually slept as late as three in the morning anyway. “Nothing is Slant-proof,” she said, smug, as she finally eased back completely.Which… was just as well; she’d just finished strapping her belt when the car suddenly jerked. Despite the Jaguar’s cushy lining, the force was enough to wind her a bit, and a hand shot out to grasp Raine’s seat; it was definitely a good thing, then, that she take the evening shift. “Did you really,” she leered– well, wheezed, really– as she tugged at the seat belt in vain. When it refused to budge, she gave up and unbuckled it, strapping it in again. “I went out with Dimbleby last night, but you know what, let’s talk about yours instead. Was he shirtless?” Perched as close as she could to the edge of her seat, Gracie draped herself over Alex’s, slanting the Ravenclaw a plain, filthy grin. “Dietrich mentioned he sometimes comes in, for ‘maintenance’.” The word was said with dreamy-eyed relish—which, of course, begged the next, logical question, “have you seen what for?”The map laid open in Alex’s hands, a clear, definite route traced out on the surface from start to finish. The Slytherin didn’t see why they had to choose– a compromise could be reached easily enough, she was sure –but she could point that out later, when a far more important topic had been laid to rest. She’d seen her friend’s mentor—had a calendar of him, even, a one and a half foot-long thing where every page glistened and smoldered with a hate for humanity. Oiled or greased, half-naked or suited up, the man was hot like burning. She had questions.
