Physical Description:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so how good looking Colm is changes from person to person. But few would call him ugly. He stands at 6’2’’ so he is very tall, though smaller than a few of the previous Gamekeepers. He is well muscled, though not overly so, due to hours of hard work outdoors. He has deep black hair that flows to his shoulders. He likes to make sure he is presentable when he leaves in the morning but during the day he often gets twigs in his hair and dirt under his nails. Colm is self conscious and wears simple black robes each day, as long as he looks tidy he is fine. However when he is in the middle of the forest he doesn’t really care.  He is not a stubborn man, able to adjust his own views to accommodate others. And he happily admits when he is wrong.

He usually wears a beard and a moustache, though every other month he decides that he will be clean shaven. One thing that people notice is his eyes, they are different colours. One is blue and the other is brown. He has scars across his lower abdomen that he dislikes showing people or talking about. On his right hand is his most expensive possession. It is a large Sapphire ring encased in gold. A family heirloom that he cherishes. When he is nervous he will twist it and take it of and put it back on.

Personality Description: Colm is a quiet man. He prefers to sit inside a room and drink some Coffee while reading than go out partying and drinking. He is also rather shy and he hates being in large groups. This doesn’t mean he won’t talk to people he just met, though only if they were on their own. He is rather self conscious. This comes from having very bad acne in his teen years. He makes sure he is in good shape and he wears nice robes. Colm is very protective of his sister. Colm has helped to bring her up. As Colm took the Hogwarts job he is able to look after her daily.

Colm is very good with children. From babies to teens. Although his job  is mainly working with animals and the forest but Colm thinks making sure the school children are safe is his number one priority. Colm is rather good at giving advice and the younger members of the family, cousins etc, often send an owl to him when they need someone to talk to. He is very hardworking and will spend hours in the forest. He takes pride in his work and whenever there is a job to do he will do it well. He doesn’t believe in half jobs.

He thinks that you should always keep your promises and he does so. He is also loyal and dependable and an excellent friend. Colm would love to work with the COMC professor some day and maybe even take over if he leaves; though he doubts they would allow him to take over. It is not surprising that he loves the outdoors, most of his life have been spent outside. He loves thunderstorms especially. Although rather childish he has never grown out of a love of Hot Chocolate.  Colm loves to learn about anything magical. People tend to underestimate him as ‘’just the groundkeeper.’’ This is one of the few things that gets him annoyed as he is skilled in both defensive and attacking magical arts. Colm also enjoys dueling, though only for fun as he feels violence to settle matters is prehistoric.

History: aghan

Colm was born on the Island of Cearbhall. The Irish island was, and remains, unplotable. This is due to the high concentration of magic on the island. To the north it had large mountains and to the south a forest. It was full of magical creatures and plants. Many of these were dangerous, even deadly, and for around 300 years the Monaghan family had owned the island. Their children were taught to look after them and Colm was a drect descendant of the first owner. They were under strict regulations of the MOM but they were always found to be competent. Colm was born in 1985 his father, also Colm, was the custodian of the Island and from a very young age he was taught how to look after the plants and the animals.

Colm loved it! He rarely saw people on the Island in his younger years, hence his shyness, but he and his father spent hours in the wild. His mother, Lisa, was a secretary at the Department of Magical Transport. They had a second child, two years after Colm was born, Keane was a great brother to Colm. However he would never know how to use magic as he was a Squib.  However he was taught to look after the animals and the plants. When Colm was in his teens he was allowed to go out alone. However his brother, who couldn’t use a wand to defend himself, was never allowed outside.

When Colm was nine he went out with his father and brother to cast spells to increase the protections spells across the island. His father was casting spells when the magic attracted a group of centaurs, there was a small heard of Centaurs on the island. They shot arrows towards the boys, their father defended them and saved their life. But then they ran toward the three males and knocked them all over. The senior Colm was able to force them to leave but both boys were injured and needed medical attention. Their father apparated them to St.Mungos and they were fine. However, both boys, bore scars and marks across their bodies.
Just over a year later the family gained their final member was born. Margaret was a beautiful little baby and she was beloved by the family. In that same year the 10 year old Colm was taken for his first wand. Olivanders was the choice; afterall who else? The wand that chose him was 11 ¼ inches long, Unicorn Core and made of Wenge wood.

At 11 he joined Hogwarts and was placed into Gryffindor. He loved Hogwarts, his first year was the most amazing of his life, and Hogwarts continued to amaze him and he did well in his OWLS. In Herbology and COMC he excelled, mainly due to his father’s teachings. During things like career fairs he didn’t pay much attention. All he ever wanted to do was to continue the family business. To look after the island and to make his father proud.

Once he left Hogwarts he went back home and started working alongside his father.

By now his brother had been training to join the Royal Navy, and at the age of 16 he would be placed on his first ship. Colm spent five years working on the island. He loved it! He had never wanted to be rich or famous. His mother and father had always taught him that all you needed in life was happiness. They had never pushed him and they only wanted a happy and healthy family.

Disaster struck the family while Colm was on holiday in Snowdon. His parents were on the Island and walking across the cliffs. A large part of the cliff collapsed as the married couple were walking across it. They fell to their deaths.

Colm couldn’t believe it at first. His family pulled together at that point and it was decided that Margaret would go to live with their aunt. Colm didn’t want to live on the island anymore, it had to many memories. So he asked the MOM to take over while he looked for a new job.  He saw that the Hogwarts Gamekeeper job was open and he thought it was great. Firstly he loved Hogwarts, secondly he loved the job and finally he would be able to keep an eye on his sister daily.

Describe your job duties and how you go about them: To look after the grounds and security at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry -  the official description of the job. His first priority is the safety of the children. Then he has to make sure the magical creatures are hidden from muggles and then the care of the creatures and the plants. His job is hard work but he loves it. It also allows him to work out doors and be near his sister.

Elaborate on your expertise in your field: He has been trained to look after magical creatures and plants since he was a child. He is a skilled wizard and is more than able to defend himself and others. He loves animals and wants to make sure they are safe and not affecting the childrens education.

Writing Sample: Colm Monaghan stood in the pouring rain in the centre of the Forbidden Forest. Lightning light the sky up like it was on fire and Colm could see the outline of the castle. He saw the Ravenclaw tower and wondered how Margaret was. Colm worried about his sister perpetually. She had been talking to him only a few hours ago but Colm still wondered how she was. Turning away from the castle to get on with his job water, that had been resting on his shoulder, fell to the ground. In his left hand was his wand and strapped to his back was a crossbow. ‘’Lumos.’’ His wand tip ignited so he could see his way. Centaurs lived in the forest and Colm, who had been working at the school for only a short time, had seen them more than most of the magical creatures in the forest.

He had been asked to get them to stay within certain boundaries and he was NOT looking forward to it. Although he found them a fascinating people it was Centaurs who had almost killed him and his family when he was young. Obviously he didn’t blaim them but he was nervous as he walked through the forest. He found it a strange feeling. Acromantula, Dragons and Gytrashes didn’t scare him but they did.

Colm respected them immensely, he saw them as equals. He coughed deeply and covered his mouth with his hand. He heard hoofsteps to his left and he spun quickly and gripped his wand until his hands were turning white. Four Centaurs appeared infront of him with their crossbows aimed straight at him. Colm stood motionless as he remembered numerous spells from the hours of dueling that he enjoyed. He didn’t want anyone to be hurt of course so he tried to be diplomatic.

“Hello. Can we all lower our weapons?’’ As a sign of good faith Colm slid his wand back into his pocket. He then used his right hand and removed his own crossbow from his back and dropped it to the ground. The light went out and Colm could barely make out the Centaurs, though when the lighting flashed it helped.
Two of the Centaurs slowly lowered their weapons. One, who seemed to be a young male, didn’t want to. But the middle Centaur looked directly into the subordinate’s eyes and he submitted.

‘Thank you. I’m Colm, the new Groundkeeper. I’ve orders from above to ask you to remain in the deep forest.
Many of the children are scared to attend certain classes held near the forest.’’

‘’This is our forest. For centuries we have roamed here. We will not listen to you.’’

‘’I understand. I really do. However the Ministry of Magic will…enforce certain rules if you don’t do what the Headmistress has ordered,’’ he could see that the Centaurs were getting angry, ‘’If you want more land then please work with me. If you stay in your designated lands then perhaps the Ministry will be able to help you.’’

Sum up your character in one paragraph: Colm is a skilled, hardworking, decent and ordinary Wizard. He loves working with animals, plants and young witches and wizards and he wants to work with the COMC professor in some capacity, maybe as an assistant. He is very worried about his sister and he keeps a constant eye on her. He tends to be the man standing quietly in the corner.
