Physical Description
Simon is a man who both looks his age, and doesn't. About 5 years ago, he chose to grow out a beard, but has found it difficult to get it to grow in thick; still, he keeps at it, and thus his face appears selectively shaven. This beard makes him look older; however, underneath it he has a rather youthful face with smooth skin, large blue eyes and full lips. His jaw and chin are angular, his jaw sharp and his chin square. His nose is not large, but juts from his face in a sharp matter than makes it appear to be. Still, he's a handsome man, with fair skin and dark brown hair.
Simon's eyes are not naturally blue; he was born with dark brown eyes, and this can be a surprise to those who knew him from school or even from just a few years ago. In an attempt to fix his naturally faulty eyesight, Simon tested a new spell and potion combination on himself; it sort of worked, but changed his eyecolor and requires him to carry glasses, as his bad eyesight sometimes returns suddenly and without warning. This leaves him with sometimes visible bruises, as he'll sometimes be disoriented by this and stumble into walls or people.
Simon is in good shape, but has a naturally lithe body, his frame best described as a runner's rather than a lifters. He stands at an average 6'1, with large feet and hands. He also dresses well; one could joke he wears suits to bed, and they wouldn't be far off. He believes appearance is extremely important, especially for infusing confidence in patients.
His body language is subtle - his gestures are gentle and measured, and rarely dramatic. As such, he comes across to most a serious, subtle sort of man. When he's wearing them, he's the sort to adjust his glasses pointedly, and when truly focusing he'll occasionally hit himself in the face as he reaches for glasses he's not wearing.
Personality Description
Simon is, on the surface, a professional, diplomatic, and modest man. A natural leader, he is encouraging and functions under the 'My door is always open' philosophy; however, he is also exacting and can at times seem a bit overbearing, as he prefers to know what his Healers are up to. He often takes notes on their methods and will drill them on anything he feels they are doing incorrectly or anything he wishes them to improve. This is sometimes a ploy; he will act upset to see how they justify their actions, and depending on their response will tell them it was an act, or go into a speech about how one must be sure of their methods when dealing with human lives. He feels some of the worst things a Healer can be is Apathetic or Careless, and so tries to instill that consciousness in those around him.
He hides a good sense of humor and a tolerant heart under his professional veneer, however, and while on the surface his views on blood purity and social status are vaguely anti-muggle, in reality he doesn't care. Simon is good at keeping his cards close to his chest, and so sometimes can seem cold and calculating. This isn't the case, exactly, but comes as a byproduct of a decade-long game of chicken he's been playing.
Simon's own goal in life, fundamentally, is to do good. Especially after the death of his mother and sister, Simon is something of a medical pioneer; he believes that one must forage ahead as well as rely on the past to find cures and aid those in need. As such he often experiments on animals and himself; but, as he firmly believes in doing no harm, he will not try his inventions on actual patients unless he is comfortable that it will not cause damage. He sticks to magic, and while he is aware of the muggle sciences to some degree, he prefers to stick to his knowledge base: magic, potions and herbs.
Much to the annoyance of others, especially coworkers, Simon holds others to his own standards in many ways. A lover of paperwork and books, he takes extremely diligent notes and will often criticize other Healers for not doing the same. He often becomes emotionally involved with his long-term patients, and feels their deaths keenly - usually feeling them as a failure on his part. He will often use their symptoms and their death in an effort to keep this from happening again, as a sort of memorial and a coping tactic. His study of Medicine is to help others - though he's aware that the suffering of one can save hundreds, he has difficulty making that call.
When it comes to love and emotions, Simon is a bastion of steadiness. In such subjects he is good with words and and good adviser, but avoids romance himself, for reasons he tells no one. His usual excuse is that he 'hasn't found the right woman'; this is a lie, of course, but the reasoning behind it remains unsaid.
Overall, Simon is a good-hearted, strong man with upstanding principles hidden under a thoughtful and professional shell. He expects and encourages the best from his coworkers and often will test them to make sure they do not become complacent.
History
CHILDHOOD & HOGWARTS
Simon was born into a 'pureblood' family, and raised in moderate wealth. The Greenburgs were a long-standing pureblood family until Simon's grandfather married a muggleborn witch, rendering them half-blood. Simon's father, Samuel, was and is obsessed with regaining his family's proper heritage; he raised his children in an environment that most pureblooded children would be familiar with.
Simon's mother Shayna was considerably younger than her husband, and had Simon when she was merely 20. His mother was a nice woman, but was a trophy wife and had been a socialite; she wasn't exactly the brightest witch in the coven. Simon loved her anyway, and got on well with his younger sister Judy and his younger brother Gabriel, though the relationship with the much younger Gabe was distant at best. His father's greatest mistake was to make it obvious to his children how desperate he was; this, with his mother's quiet mockery of her husband, planted the seeds of doubt in Simon's mind. His father's frequent absences when Judy and Simon were younger didn't help, either.
He began attending Hogwarts in 1982, and was sorted, to his father's annoyance, into Hufflepuff. He did well in school, though certainly not anything amazing. His charisma as a boy made him a few close friends, and he took a shining to Quidditch. His interests in school were mostly focused on Potions and Herbology, for which he had something of a knack.
In his 4th year his sister joined him at school, and she was sorted into Slytherin. This earned her their father's approval, something Simon was becoming less concerned about the older he got, especially as his parent's marriage began to be more openly rocky.
By his 5th year he had managed to get himself onto the Quidditch team, and became the Quidditch captain. His OWL grades were mostly good; he suffered in a few classes, and got As and Es across the board. His only Os were in Potions and in Herbology, and with his family's situation making it very clear he needed to find his own way in the world, Simon resolved to get better.
Originally hoping to go strictly into Potions, in his 6th year, his mother suffered her first major bout of illness; a nasty case of poisoning after, apparently, consuming improperly made enchanted chocolates - one of her favorite dishes. Her near-death experience inspired her son to change his mind and go into Healing.
His sudden change caused him quite a bit of trouble on his NEWTs, and he only managed to get Os in Potions and Herbology again, despite a lot of hard work. This came back to haunt him as he headed out into adult life and tried to get into St. Mungos in 1990.
ST. MUNGOS & THE WAR (1990-1998)
As Simon finally scraped his way into St. Mungos with the aid of a family friend, his monther fell dangerously ill again. He was able to aid in her treatment, and his suspicions that his father was the cause of it only grew. These feelings would prove to be false, but the family issues only grew as time went on, but remained understated as Simon worked his way through St. Mungos.
As a trainee, Simon quickly started playing with his ideas and his talent for Potions, turning it first on himself. Born with terrible eyesight, he chose to see if it was fixable. Developing potions based on a few sight-enhancing potions, he developed his first try at it in 1991, and after some basic tests, he tried it on himself. It worked - to some extent. He's stuggled with intermittent bad eyesight since, but he feels this is an important lesson, and formed his resolve to ensure his tests are safe before trying them on others.
His sister brought their family issues to a head in 1994, when she graduated and finally turned on their father, making her relationship with the halfblood Tapendra Trishna public. Samuel responded by disowning her, striking her name from the family tree and forbidding any mention of her in their home. Simon was horrified; Judy and he had been close since childhood, and the two had long made their dissent known to each other. Simon was proud of his sister for standing up to their father, and was as helpful to her as he could be without incurring their father's wrath himself.
Their new issue arose, though; the third Greenburg child, Gabe. Gabe was the odd man out - and while Simon could sort of see his brother's plight, he and Gabe had never really gotten on. The younger by several years, Gabe had been raised more under his father's wing than the other two - but Judy was the girl, and Simon was the hier, the one his father had truly put all his hopes on. Gabe - a Slytherin at the core - saw his chance, and suddenly was very vocal in his approval of his father's actions.
And thus the game began - Gabe and Simon have been politely at each other's throats ever since. Gabriel attempts to discredit Simon and amp himself up in their father's eyes, in hopes of approval and getting the inheritance himself; Simon thus must maintain the act of getting along with his father and make himself seem the better son despite some simple disagreements. His feud with his brother made him have to claim to approve of his sister's dismissal, an act that made him quite angry, both with his brother and himself.
Despite this, and perhaps largely because of it, Simon thew himself into his work. His mother often fell ill, her body weakened by her poisoning, and treating her gave the two of them time to talk. While learning from her the full story of her illnesses did help with the family situation, Simon found St. Mungos was eminently preferable to his own stormy family life.
Over the years, Simon had found he had a talent for working with spell damage, and so had quickly found himself on the 4th floor. He enjoyed working with Aurors, and it gave him an excuse to see his sister without his father truly getting savvy that his sympathies still lay with her. Simon was promoted to a full healer in 1996, and he has seen his fare share of Aurors - both healing them, and in more cases than he'd like, tending to their final hours.
When the tensions fully arose again and Voldemort returned, St. Mungos became Simon's home, literally; with the wounded Aurors and civilians streaming in, the naturally hardworking man took to sleeping in his office, and spent months without returning to his flat. He had to keep his sympathies quiet as possible, but still remained strong against extremes - he advised his father against throwing his chips in with Voldemort, carefully keeping the old man from dooming their family.
The end of the war was nothing but a relief for Simon, who had escaped without coming under terrible harm. He still keeps those times very close at heart, however, and uses them to remind him why he feels the way he does about those issues.
POST-WAR AND HEALER-IN-CHARGE
Simon's sister Judy was the first of his close family members to die, losing her life to a simple accident. This was shocking to Simon, who had always felt himself prepared for the worst. In the short term, her death was shattering; his sister had been his best friend and one of his only true allies other than his mother. In the long term, Simon uses that memory of her sudden death - and the death of his mother just 2 years later, in 2004 - as reminders of what the families of his patients go through.
He was promoted to Healer-in-Charge in 2003. Since assuming this post he has gone at it with a single-minded determination, and has made it his MO to ensure all of his healers treat their patients with care and caution.
Job Duties
As healer-in-charge, it's Simon's job to aid long-term patients, aid with extremely severe cases, and supervise the healers and trainees on his floor. He goes about this, largely, but dealing with paperwork - patient records, reports, and permissions. He also still acts as a Healer himself, and so while he spends the late evenings in his office, he's usually to be found tending to his own patients.
It's also his job to keep relations on his floor working; he'll intervene in co-worker disputes, deal with reassigning healers if they and a patient don't 'gel', and aid the Healers in dealing with difficult family situations, like deaths or upsetting patient requests.
Simon largely takes it upon himself to monitor the progress of trainees and the younger healers, and will do his utmost to keep the Spell Damage healers working well with patients and with each other.
Expertise
Simon has a natural talent for Potions and Herbology, and thus his inclination in Healing leans towards those. He's not terrible with a wand, however. A trainee and healer at St. Mungos for 20 years (as of 2009) and a Healer-in-Charge for 6, the vast majority of his skills have been learned from the hospital itself. He's a diligent learner, even now, and is fully open-minded in admitting a long-held cure is actually harmful if such a thing can be proven to him.
His slightly under performing NEWT scores caused him trouble when he first joined as a trainee, and he had to work extra hard to surpass the impression they left on his teachers.
His leadership skills are half natural and half learned; he regularly reads the latest books on the subject, though all too often disagrees with the findings of the authors.
