[May 19th] Caught in the line of fire (Vivienne) on September 02, 2011, 01:42:15 PM Griffon had one hell of a day before he found himself in a St. Mungo's bed. There had been some issues with rogue dragons in the Welsh country side. Somehow they had gotten past the magical barriers to keep them out of muggle territory, and an entire unit had been dispatched to not only subdue them but to obliviate the handful of muggles that had managed to catch a glimpse of the creatures. He had allowed the official obliviators to handle that, and had been with his employees attempting to put the dragons back where they belonged. At first it had been going much better than Griffon had hoped. There were three loose dragons. The first two were subdued and were being transported back to where they belonged, but the last one- much larger than a Welsh dragon ought to be- was giving them some trouble. He had been attempting to get his men to cast their spells in unison- which would make them more effective- but there was a young trainee on the dragon force who wasn't quite sure what he was doing. Griffon was never taking a trainee out on the field again. The boy had mispronounced the stunning spell, and on top of that had not taken the proper care to aim it. Griffon found all of this out later after he had been apparated sidelong back to Mungo's. He had apparently been hit in the leg with the spell, which instead of stunning him had decided to tear a large chunk of flesh from him. Quick first aid from one of his other employees had stopped the bleeding. But no other repairs had been made.He had just now woken up in the hospital bed- or at the very least, had been conscious enough to realize what was going on. Griffon sat up abruptly, then moaned loudly at the searing pain in his thigh. "Merlin's beard what have you done to me!" he groaned, leaning back against the pillows with a grimace. It was one of those days. Patients were coming in from all ends of the county but half of the Healers were either already occupied or off duty. There was no avoiding such days. She rolled up her sleeves as they turned a corner and the mediwitch rattled on: "We were going to give him something for the pain but the Healer had to attend to the next incomi--""Yes, I know." Vivienne interupted. "And then I came up and the fellow with the cursed hand nearly exploded and Mrs.Rose tried sneaking upstairs again, and it's all very terrible." The two women came to stop outside one of the doors in the short-term ward and looked at each other with equally weary expressions. "I'll finish his treatment... you go on ahead and prep the next case. We are getting, maybe, less busy. Merci, Louisa." With a quick nod, the mediwitch left.Vivienne turned to enter the treatment space; a long room with rows of hospital beds separated by curtains. These rooms were used when the single treatment quarters were filled up or being cleaned. Just as the doors closed behind her, a startling exclamation of pain came from the bed closest to the windows and half the room jumped: "Merlin's beard what have you done to me?" The patient called out in pain. Viv pressed her lips together worriedly and cut through the aisle between other wounded wizards, heading towards the man who must have been Louisa's patient."Try not to move Mister, ah, Manley." The Healer glanced quickly down at the chart on the end of his bed when she reached Griffon Manley. He was a broad, strong looking person in scruffy clothes; his right trouser leg had been ripped off at the thigh, revealing the injury. An ill-cast spell had ripped a good deal of flesh from the patients leg-- bleeding had been stopped at the scene and disinfected earlier by another healer. Still, it was easy to tell that an assistant or amateur had applied the regeneration elixir. It was wrapped too tightly and the regenerating flesh didn't have enough space to expand. "Enfer. Hold on a minute- I will adjust that for you and then we may numb it."Quickly, Vivienne started at her work without waiting for a reply. It would be better if she could relieve the pain as soon as possible. The clumsy wrapping from before was undone and the bandages discarded. New ones were procured and she began on a secure but less confined binding, speaking soothingly all the time: "Your leg will be good as new in about a day, we just need to let the elixir do its fine work. Not even a scar if we are lucky." The final layer of gauze went on before Viv could take a step back and relax her shoulders. She breathed out heavily but then reached into her pocket to take out her wand... anesthetizing spells could be tricky. Vivienne looked up at Manley and smiled in her calm, untroubled manner: "That should feel a little better now. Do you require me to further alleviate any pain?" Admittedly, this was much better than her last two cases-- this fellow at least looked reasonable. So he sat still, and carefully watched her as she started about her work. He winced at the sight of his leg when the bandages were removed. She told him he'd be good as new in about a day, maybe without a scar. The bandages she applied were much less restricting, and he exhaled slowly. "I just moved a little too fast, I think," he explained. "I suppose someone must have sedated me. I'm not surprised." Griffon could get unreasonable and hard to handle when he was angry, and no doubt losing a hunk of his leg would have made him that way. And depending on who had dragged him to Mungo's (that bit was fuzzy) he might have been trying to fight them. The pain wasn't so bad now that she had adjusted things and the initial stabbing from his sudden movement had worn off. It still was anything but comfortable. "And scars don't bother me, I've got them all over. Part of the job's territory," he explained. "Besides, I've had worse wounds. No need to baby me, madam healer. I'm sure there are worse spell accidents in the ward which require your attention. Just a little bit of flesh removal. Not splinched or anything of the sort." Griffon didn't want the lady healer to think that he was a weakling of some sort- because he wasn't. Griffon was a strong man who had tolerated a lot in his time, including wounds from yeti, and he wasn't going to let a little rogue spell knock him off his feet. "Besides, I've had worse wounds," Griffon Manely added: "No need to baby me, madam healer. I'm sure there are worse spell accidents in the ward which require your attention. Just a little bit of flesh removal. Not splinched or anything of the sort."A bit of flesh removal! Viv smiled wryly down at him, a little incredulous but mostly amused by his bravado. "I don't baby my patients, Mister Manley. I've been accused of not babying some of you enough, I'm sure!" She laughed a little to herself and then sat at the edge of the bed, lowering her arm to lightly apply some pressure onto the bandaged leg. She would wait a little longer to see if he needed more elixir-- and besides, nobody had been around to call her away for another case yet. The treatment room was settling down now and some of the other wizards could be heard snoring or talking quietly to themselves. Vivienne wondered if incoming injuries were being treated in another ward now. She looked at her own patient curiously: "It isn't often we receive members of your department here. Angry colleague, I suppose?" The chart had told her little more beyond the awry charm and its gruesome damange. Did she not believe him that he was man enough to handle a spell gone wrong? Griffon had survived yeti attacks! This was nothing compared to that. A yetti nearly biting your leg off? Now that was painful. Even so- Griffon couldn't help but wince when she pressed onto his injured leg, as if to prove her point. "Well it's not too bad so long as you aren't prodding at it," he offered. "And I've definitely had worse. I used to wrangle yetis in Tibet- if I can manage to live through a few yeti attacks, I think a wayward spell won't be too difficult to survive, wouldn't you agree Madam Healer?" He shook his head when she mentioned angry colleague. "Inexperienced, more like. We were trying to subdue a dragon and a trainee misfired and mispronounced his spell- I think he was a bit terrified face to face with a rampaging dragon. I remember it hitting my leg, cursing at him, and next thing I knew I had woken up in a hospital bed and tried to get up and couldn't. I'm sure my colleagues had to subdue me on the scene to keep me from making it worse. She supposed that the head of the RCMC would be a man's man, whatever that meant. Her gaze returned to his leg, "Excuse me. I'll just make sure your leg is healing." She prodded the wrappings again and this time felt a kind of spongey, fleshiness beneath it. He wouldn't be needing any more of the elixir at this rate. "Well, Mister Manley..." Viv glanced up at the wizard with a frank look: "I can't say that I approve of my patients working through their injuries but you do appear to be healing well," she withdrew her hand from the leg wound and stood up in one feminine motion. People with less resilient bodies often needed more potions or balms for their suffering but it seemed that Manley was taking the pain well. Probably didn't feel too bad, for someone who dealt with creature injuries all the bloody time. Vivienne reached into one of her robe pockets and retrieved a very small glass bottle, which she offered on her palm to the patient: "I think I can leave you to get better now- the leg will be good as new within the hour. This will help stave off any migraines, just in case that wayward spell has affected your head in any way." "Would probably heal better if you weren't poking at it," he commented through gritted teeth. "My mom always taught me if something hurt not to poke at it." He shifted his position in the bed, pulling his leg back under the covers. It didn't hurt when it was just sitting there. He frowned when she said that working through the injury wouldn't be recommended. "So you're prescribing desk work, then?" Griffon asked. "I guess it's better to do that than risk ripping open the wound again if I head right back to the field. Good as new as in I can resume my regular schedule or good as new as in there won't be a huge hole in it?" Sometimes he was still surprised at the effectiveness of magical medicines. It was a shame they couldn't share some of it with the muggles. They could really benefit from magical medicine.Griffon took the vial from the healer, inspecting it before setting it on the small table next to the bed. "How kind of you," he said with a slight grin. He couldn't help but think she was insinuating something with her comment. "I apologize if I was rude or rough with any of your employees," he added. "I know that my temper gets the best of me sometimes, and it wouldn't surprise me if I was a bit unreasonable or obnoxious before you got potions down my throat." She shook her head: "Don't you worry. We have our difficult days here on the fourth floor and it's nothing we can't handle, a loud patient. It's the Aurors that get to me." Viv grinned a little guiltily. There were mornings when every other patient in the ward would be woken by the inarticulate yelling of an incoming injury. Merlin bless their souls.
