Physical Description: Ethereal, is a term that many have used to describe Calliope O'Connor. With medium length blonde hair and blue-gray eyes, she can be deemed 'delicate'. The young girl has pale skin, unmarked by any blemish. Unless you count the small scar on her right cheekbone. It is hardly visible and serves as a tiny reminder, not all children can fly! Calliope has a petite frame and build. She weighs about 93lbs and stands at just 5 feet.
The young girl has pierced ears and often wears just a simple diamond stud in each. Calliope also wears a small ring, a Celtic knot on her left hand. It was a gift from her father and she never takes it off. Often times, Calliope wears her hair simple and down. However, recently she has been discovering the art of make-up and hair styling. Her mother keeps insisting that she begin to emphasize her looks.
Personality Description: Calliope is at times a serious and studious person. The young girl likes structure and order. A little harsh, however, the term 'control-freak' is extremely fitting. Anything out of place and Calliope becomes irritated. A small casualty from growing up O'Connor. Everything had its place, and it was expected to remain as such. However, she can flip a switch, and suddenly you have Ms. I'm All Smiles. She loves to laugh, when she isn't obsessed with studying or homework. Calliope loves the outdoors, and she has a fondness for water. The young girl has often times been seen outdoors in a downpour!
Calliope can be quirky and a complete goof-ball. She loves to laugh and enjoy herself (of course, after all homework and studying is done!). Her sense of humor makes her light-hearted and comical. She often says things that don't make sense, or seem completely random.
Charming, she can draw people in around her with a mere smile or look. Calliope has a fairly decent time at making new friends. The young girl isn't a wallflower. Opinionated, there are times when she can't shut her mouth. Calliope is never one to back away from a debate, and she has a burning desire to prove she is always right.
Calliope is respectful and observes everyone with immediate respect. However, prove her wrong and her temper will flare. Moody, Calliope can demonstrate an array of mood-swings. Never get on her bad side! Calliope has a long memory and and even bigger temper!
History: In October of 1996, a healthy baby girl was born to Charlie and Mary O'Connor. The infant was named, Calliope Bay O'Connor. The couple were delighted with the birth of their daughter, and soon Calliope was the center of their world.
Charlie and Mary decided not to expand their family. Mary was quite concerned that any more pregnancies, and her figure would never keep. Charlie, who had come from a large family himself, was quite content with just one child. So Calliope grew up, an only child. This never bothered her much, as she had both her parents wrapped around her finger.
Calliope's childhood was filled with love and laughter. Portstewart, a coastal town in Northern Ireland, was the perfect place to raise a family. Charlie worked locally and Mary remained at home to raise their young daughter. In the summer, Calliope would spend hours near the shoreline. Her delicate skin always made her susceptible to sunburn. Calliope was always seen out and about with a large, floppy, wide-brimmed hat. Seashells, and bits of driftwood were collected and Calliope grew to adore the smell, taste and feel of the ocean.
Mary taught her daughter etiquette and always preached about the importance of appearance. The O'Connors were highly respected in the community, and their status rose with the years. Charlie, in 2003, was hired on by the Ministry of Magic. The family relocated to London. Calliope sorely missed her beloved Ireland, but soon grew to enjoy life in London.
The letter from Hogwarts came as no surprise. Charlie and Mary had not been at all worried. From infancy, Calliope had shown signs of magical ability. There had not been a squib in the family for at least eight generations. Mary had thrown a lavish celebration in honor of Calliope's acceptance letter. That September, Calliope was seen off by her parents and her academic career at Hogwarts began. After being sorted into Ravenclaw, Calliope began to settle in to life at school.
At first, the balance between school and life, was difficult. Calliope spent the first few weeks withdrawn, buried up to her nose in books, quills and parchment. Then, purely driven by lack of socialization, Calliope began to cultivate a social life. The first year passed quietly, all of her final exams were passed and she had been ambivalent about the end of term. There were several in Ravenclaw that she had developed a bond with, and she would miss the routine of life at Hogwarts. However, the thought of returning home, and a holiday in Ireland, definitely made it much more bearable.
Her second year was much more exciting! Calliope had developed a knack for Charms, and it soon became her favorite and best subject. While perhaps not at the top of the class, Calliope was definitely among the more gifted, when it came to Charms. Calliope also found that her classes were entirely more enjoyable. Transfiguration, Potions and History of Magic are among her other favorite subjects. Calliope struggles, however, in Defense Against The Dark Arts. It is perhaps her weakest subject. This makes her more than determined to master the subject. Also, in her second year, Calliope began to develop a crush on a 7th year Ravenclaw. Although she never once spoke to the boy, she had thought him the cutest and smartest boy in Ravenclaw. It marked the realization that boys didn't have cooties!
How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Calliope is extremely intelligent, yet creative. The young girl uses both her logic and wit to assess that which surrounds her. Focus, and rationality also play into why she was chosen for Ravenclaw. The young girl remains diligent, persistent and receptive until the end. Calliope is also gifted with music, she can play many instruments. She has to only look at sheet music a few times, and she can recite a piece with flawless flair.
Writing Sample: One, two, three... The second hand on the clock rotated, and her blue-gray eyes observed the monotony. Calliope had an urge to stretch, she had been sitting for way to long. 'How much longer would this last?', she thought to herself. Her mother had said it would only take a few minutes. That had been twenty minutes ago. The stiffness in her back was slowly creeping up her spine.
"Thank you. I will make sure to send you an owl, next week. I cannot wait to see her reaction!" The soft lilting voice of her mother came echoing down the hall. A petite blond-haired woman came into view. Mary O'Connor, glanced at her daughter and smiled. The way her mother smiled, it made even the coldest of hearts, melt. Calliope immediately began to ask questions. Mary, knowing all to well how inquisitive her daughter could be, remained silent.
After several minutes, Calliope admitted defeat. Her mother was up to something! The young girl brushed back her blond hair and furrowed her brow. "Darling, you will get wrinkles if you make that face! It would be a shame to have such a lovely daughter with premature wrinkles!" Mary quipped. gently cupping Calliope's chin in her hand. Calliope smiled and relaxed her expression.
The day had begun early. Mary had prepared a large breakfast and had sent her husband, Charlie off to work rather hastily. Calliope had found it strange, her mother seemed to be pre-occupied. The thirteen year old had not been able to think of anything to explain her mother's odd behavior. The blueberry pancake had been halfway to her mouth, when Mary had ordered Calliope to hurry her breakfast. The girl did as she was asked, and had eaten the rest of her pancake in world record timing.
Her mother had remained quiet, yet cheery as the pair had made their way into Diagon Alley. Calliope had already purchased all her things for the upcoming term. This was perhaps the bigger puzzle. Mary O'Connor had turned to a small shop, halfway down the main street. Calliope had never noticed this place in her previous visits to Diagon Alley. Then again, Calliope had not ever paid too much attention while shopping. As long as her pockets had money, she shopped until she dropped. Mary had sat her daughter down, on the harsh wooden bench. Calliope received instructions, remain quiet and still. Then her mother had disappeared down the hall, and twenty unfulfilled minutes had passed.
"Mum, I'm starving! Can we grab a bite before we head home?" she asked, putting aside the secretive manner of her mother. There would be time to figure it all out. Tonight, she would recruit her father. Perhaps, if she buttered him up, Calliope could get to the bottom of this puzzle. Besides, she was thirteen! That was old enough to be treated as an adult. Sometimes, she resented the molly-coddling of her mother. Mary gazed down at her daughter, a smile lit up her face. The older woman nodded and brushed a hand over her daughter's golden head.
The pair set off, headed arm in arm down the busy fairway of Diagon Alley.
Sum up your character in one paragraph: Overall, Calliope is a friendly person. The Ravenclaw is studious and school-work will always come first. However, all work and no play isn't anyway to live! Perhaps a bit spoiled, Calliope isn't self-centered or vain. Her heart is big and she will believe the best in everyone. The girl is sunshine, on a cloudy day!
