How the History of Magic Final Works

Getting Your Grade
This test is graded in one of two ways.

Reply to this thread.
The first is to reply to this thread with a role played post of your student taking the test. Based on that post, I will determine their grade for the class. This is based on the 'surprise me' idea of grading.

Send me a PM.
Your PM needs to follow a few loose guidelines:
    • Title needs to contain student name and year.
    • Grade you feel your character would achieve in the exam.
    • A brief explanation as to why your character has achieved such a grade.
If the reasons for the grade seem fitting enough in regards to your character effort, behaviour, intelligence etc, then I'll happily grant you the mark you desire; if there seems to be some discrepancies however, I'm sure we can reach a compromise.

Code for Personal Messages
Code: [Select]
Student Name:
Requested Grade:
What Have They Done to Earn This Grade?:

Failure to reply or to PM me by the end of June (in game) will earn your student an A regardless of their in-game performance.

All exam manuscripts should be kept within one post; once the exam has started, Professor Austerlitz (in typical fashion) would demand absolute silence. Any rule-breakers will be removed and have their exam paper destroyed, resulting in an 'unclassified' mark.

Again, if the exam paper result is in sharp contrast with the behaviour, effort, intelligence etc of your character, then adjustments may have to be made for purposes of realism.

The History of Magic Final

Name: __Annabelle White_
House: ____Ravenclaw____

Perform the exam to the best of your ability: all necessary information has been covered in the course of first year, and no questions will be unanswerable. If a question proves difficult, I may briefly outline what is required but I am unable to provide an in-depth explanation. Extra ink, quills and parchment will be given upon request.

The following are all forbidden, and seen as a direct infringement of examination regulations:
  • Communicating and/or talking once the test has begun.
  • Possession of documents, books, notes etc that are not permitted.
  • The use of magic to provide answers and/or an aid to knowledge.

Anybody found breaking these rules will be ejected from the classroom and have their manuscript destroyed, resulting in an 'unclassified' grade that will affect any future History of Magic exams and your final grade for this year.

This test is 50% of your final grade, so try not to panic: have a good exam.

N.B. Thanks to Armiece for the exam paper template.

Professor Austerlitz awaited in front of her desk as the tiny students filed in, taking position with nervous eyes and strained concentrations. Unlike her other classes, the old witch wasn't as intimidating or terrifying with the first year; they were, after all, children. The majority of them wouldn't be able to partake in advanced History of Magic if they tried, so it was easier for all if she were a little less strict. That didn't mean to say Hildegarde was a pushover - molly-coddling, blue-eyed matron she most certainly was not.

"Try not to panic too much," she reassured them, her voice filled with conviction. "Half of your grade is dependant upon the assignments you've completed throughout the year, so this exam isn't the be all and end all of your academic career. You've plenty of time to complete the test." Clasping both hands together, Professor Austerlitz looked around at the peering, youthful faces that looked either frightened or exhausted, or both. Giving them a nod of encouragement, it was a rare gesture of good will.

Peering at the clock mounted high on the domed walls of the classroom, she counted down the seconds silently, before giving two loud, clear claps. "The time is ten o'clock, you may begin."

Ormen wandered into the classroom still feeling a little tired from the night before; he didn't get much sleep, he was cramming for the final. As he carried his sleepy self to his desk and sat down, he looked down at the paper he had been handed, waited, then began.

Pax was cautiously optimistic about the History of Magic exam. Granted, he was still a little nervous, and nowhere near as confident as he had been about his Astronomy written exam. All the same though, he'd studied as best he could, and at least he wouldn't be let down by his poor wandwork, as had been the trouble in the Charms exam, and was the reason he was dreading the Transfiguration exam. And at least if he didn't do very well in this exam, he still had his class marks up until now to fall back on, and History was a subject that, while he didn't excel as much as some of his classmates, he was consistently decent. After all, it was usually interesting enough to hold his attention. So when Professor Austerlitz informed them they may begin, Pax looked over the exam parchment quite calmly, then started filling in what he knew, as best as he could remember.

Q2. Give two reasons that caused the Muggle Rebellion of Athens, 560BC.
I) Wizards and witches had a much higher standard of life, and there was some resentment from the muggles who couldn't afford as much.
II) Some muggles hoped that magic was the answer to everything, and some of them felt angry and betrayed when they found out there were still some problems magic couldn't fix.

Q3. Underline the correct answer. Approximately, how many died in the Muggle Rebellion of Athens?

Q9. Explain why the public identity of ancient witches and wizards slowly reverted into secrecy and silence, separating the muggle and wizarding worlds.
_There were some irreconsilable differences between wizards and muggles. On the one hand, some wizards got really arrogant about being 'more powerful' than people without magic, and became dangerous because of the amount of power they wielded, and the reckless ways they sometimes used it. The best way to stop it was to seperate their society from the one that gave them that sense of superiority. Muggles, on the other hand, were also partially responsible for the divide. Some muggles didn't understand why magic couldn't fix all of their problems, instead of just some of them, and this made them frustrated, especially when you consider that some of the wizards and witches were pretending to gods, and gods are supposed to be able to make anything happen. So some muggles felt cheated and got angry with the wizards, and so most wizards just decided it would be best if they kept their existence secret from muggles so this sort of thing wouldn't happen again._

Keegan sighed as he stared down at his test. History was never one of his strong suits. It was boring, pointless and ultimately not much concern for him. He didn't need to know about the Goblin rebellions to blast bad guys away or play quidditch. It was like when he had to learn math back in muggle school, he simply didn't see what worth it had to him. With that tugging at the back of his mind, Keegan hurried through the test. The sooner he got it done, the sooner he could go and enjoy the summer air. THAT was much more important to a growing boy, in his opinion.
