How the Astronomy O.W.L Works

Getting Your Grade
This test is graded in one of two ways.

Reply to this thread.
The first is to reply to this thread with a role played post of your student taking the test. Based on that post, I will determine their grade for the class. This is based on the 'surprise me' idea of grading.

Send Tapendra Trishna a PM.
Your PM needs to follow these guidelines:
    • Needs to have the title format of "Year / Student Name" (5th Year / Jane Doe)
    • You need to state what grade you want your student to have.
    • You need to explain what they have done in the class to receive that grade.
If I feel it is necessary, I may question your reasoning, especially if your requested grade is sharp contrast to your student's performance in past class threads and on the board as a whole.

This was a test Vulpes was not excited for, for he was fairly certain that he would get a bad grade even though it was one of the few he had actually studied for. He hoped dearly that since it was just the theory that he would receive a decent score. But then of course, if he did bad on the practical...

He didn't want to think about it. Quietly he entered the testing room and took his seat. With deliberate slowness he pulled out a pen. Sighing heavily he picked up the test and looked it over. It was a miracle! For the first time in five years Vulpes actually knew everything on an Astronomy test.

Vulpes looked up. It had actually taken him longer than he thought it would; fourty-five minutes had passed. But he was fairly confident he managed an O on this portion. Now all he had to do was do decently on the practical, and he should at least get an A.

With the tips of his fingers, Sasha smoothed out the corners of his Astronomy exam.  Astronomy was, thankfully, the last set of exams and then they had a welcoming three day weekend before the last week of exams, and the term, started.  He had no worries about the Astronomy exam; the material in this class had been amongst the easiest to study while he'd been away from school.  And, Professor Trishna had generously offered as much extra help as Sasha had been willing to accept.  He knew the material with full confidence.

Entering the Great Hall today, Raine felt a kind of calmness settle over her. It was the contrast between her last exam-- Charms -- and this paper. The former was significant to her overall goals. Astronomy wasn't. It was, in fact, one of the few subjects the Gryffindor enjoyed that she had very little intention of taking up in her sixth year, regardless of what grade was acquired. She took her seat at a desk and looked down at the paper composedly. Everything looked doable. This had been one of her favourite classes with Sanya... taking down precise, methodical information and reciting facts of distant worlds. She almost looked forward to their practical.

Raine wrote her name and house down before beginning the examination.

Sitting herself in the Great Hall, Sophie found herself wishing they were tucked away in the cozy tower with Professor Trishna; rather than some never-before-heard-of bureaucrat. Still, Astronomy was one of the few classes Sophie actually felt extremely confident about in regards to her O.W.L.'s. Professor Trishna had been an adjustment at first - and the fifth years certainly had tried to give him a rough go of it. Over all though, if you were willing to listen and work hard he was an excellent Professor - one of the best that Sophie had ever had (other than say her gran, not many could top Nana Flickwick when it came to instruction). It was good going into the test feeling so confident (at least about this one thing), she still had Professor Ó Móráin's doom and gloom speech from the fifth playing in her head about CoMC. Gordic's Garters! That test was going to tie her up in knots seven ways to Sunday... this though, this she had a handle on.

Huck rubbed at the bags under his eyes. He had been up late- not studying, God no, but reading and doodling. Nerves had made it quite impossible for him to drift into a restful slumber, and he had spent the entire night under his covers drawing faces. Men, women, even the occasional baby.

He glanced down at his exam. He could barely read it.

Aurora was fairly positive she had this material down pat, but that didn't stop her from rubbing her temples from her increase in stress because of her lack of focus.  Every time she started reading a question, her eyes drifted elsewhere and her mind went blank.  It took her minutes just to read through one question.  Focus! she told herself harshly, and after a few more pitiful attempts, she got through a whole question without fail.  Now, just do this a few more dozen times and you'll be set.

Aurora finally finished in what felt like days, but she was certain that her answers were that of Exceeds Expectations, at least.  She sighed in relief and flipped her paper over, so she wouldn't feel the need to look over it relentlessly and drive herself mad.

Mysti had actually spent some time studying for the Astronomy OWL. Of course, there were a few things she managed to get confused, but still felt like she’d do decent on the test.  She sat down and looked over the test.  It was pretty straightforward.  She knew all the answers... save one.  She’d got her numbers mixed up and couldn’t remember Jupiter’s orbit of the sun!  Mysti took a guess and figured she had still done quite well.

Evie had spent the last night going over the things she knew quite well.  She often gazed at the stars, and found them incredibly beautiful.  In fact, she’d designed an entire line of clothes taken after the stars (not yet debuted, but she was waiting for the right time).  Sitting down at her seat in the Great Hall, Evie was confident she’d do well.  And as she went through the test, she smiled.  She’d studied all of this and knew all the answers.  She still had some time and double checked her answers before turning it in, thankful to at least be done with it.

Erin filed into the Great Hall along with the rest of his peers, the circles under his eyes and the way he dragged his feet pegging him as one of the luckless few who'd been up all night. Erin had a hard time with tests, and had a hard time knowing what to study; his late-night sessions generally consisted of him flipping through the textbook at random, staring hard as if the important things would just pop out. His notes helped, except for the bits where he'd gotten bored and drawn stick-figure Quidditch matches all over the margins. Unfortunately, that happened a lot. Today shouldn't be too bad, though. Erin was bleary-eyed, but doing the star charts was gonna be so much harder. Moon phases were a piece of cake. Erin filled out the beginning of the test with his hasty scrawl, then slowed when he hit the minefield of multiple-choice. Chewing on the end of his quill, he hunched down at his desk and stared at his exam, his expression folding into a fierce, determined scowl.

Was school out for Summer yet?  Would exams ever end?  It felt like that's all they'd been talking about for eons.  Of course, OWLs not exactly been a secret from the start, but having to live through just made it seem all the more endless at that.  Not only did he have to pass them all, he also had to do well enough in his chosen subjects to continue them on to next year.  For a brief moment, Luc considered leaving Hogwarts after OWLs.  This gone no further then his own head though.  Like he'd told Georgiana a couple weeks back, his father wouldn't have that.  Not to mention he did have some vague sweeping ideas of what he wanted to do.  Might as well get the qualifications while he was setting them in stone.

Astronomy never been his strongest subject, but it was far from his weakest.  Studying consisted of finding all that he could on the last five years of notes, and even then some things been missed.  The theory seemed easy enough, though some details about Jupiter was getting mixed up with other planets.  He paused on a couple questions, second guessing himself before finally filling in all the answers and being done with it.

Josh was fairly stresed about the test, he wanted to get an O. As a result, he looked streessed out.

The Astronomy O.W.L. was one of the few tests that Liviana felt remotely confident about; especially the theory of it. The practical test was more worrisome than the actual written portion. She felt sure that she could pull out at least an E, possibly an O. An O in Astronomy would be good because it was yet another place where Dazmond outshone her. Competing with your sister in your head was an impossible race to win but Livi was determined to do well. She'd made sure to get plenty of rest the night before and didn't let herself try and cram more information into her brain; the key was to read everything carefully and not rush, skip answers she didn't know and go back to them. She could do this, she would do well - at least better than Norwood (that was another goal, stupid Smarty Pants Ravenclaw).

Palms clammy and hazel eyes wide, Ricci walked into the Great Hall with a quick glance at her surroundings. She was quite nervous, to say the least. Astronomy was not only her least favorite subject, but also her worst, due to her questioning of how stars and constellations could possibly help further her in her wizarding career. Seriously, knowing all of the moons in the galaxy wouldn’t help with cooking or baking. But she had studied nonetheless, perhaps not as much as she would study for her Transfiguration or Charms OWLs, but was determined to recieve a decent mark. And now her mind was blank. Various spots in her memory started unearthing themselves as the fifth year took a seat at an empty desk. She frantically tried to remember the correct order in which the phases of the moon were in when the piece of parchment, which held various astronomical questions, was placed in front of her. Ricci gave a loud sigh, picked up her quill, and began to write.
