Her best and favorite feature, Kia has what is considered piercing eyes. They are a pale blue-green, sometimes gray in the right light, surrounded by a dark fringe of lashes. She has a heavy brow that, fortunately, give her a fiercer gaze rather then make her look like a Neanderthal. She gets her eyes from her father, who also has a heavy brow and a pale piercing gaze. She will wear a bit of eye makeup, generally just mascara and eyeliner, but tries to keep it simple.Kia secretly thinks she has a fat face, thanks to the fact that her cheeks are actually rather full. But with her well turned chin and prominent cheekbones, her face is actually a nice smooth oval. She inherited both her parents noses, though her fathers Anglican nose is more prominent. The bridge is long, straight and thin like her fathers, but the tip is fuller and wider like her mothers. Her second favorite feature, Kia's lips are full and considered pouty as well. She likes to play them up with lipgloss and occasionally lipstick if the occasion calls for it. She is actually very insecure about her smile, hence why she rarely smiles and always smiles with her lips closed when she does. The reason is that despite the fact that |
she takes excellent care of her teeth to keep them white and straight, she has a bit of an overbite. She feels that her smile makes her look stupid, so she rarely shows her teeth if she can help it. True to her African roots, Kia's hair is naturally curly, though not nearly as much as Kale's. She was lucky to be blessed with smooth enough hair that even when curly, it isn't difficult to tame. Using straightening and shine spells, Kia will usually style her hair so that it is straight or in gentle waves. It is a dark black/brown that changes colors during the seasons, darker in the winter and lighter in the summer. When it is down, it is about mid back, cut in long layers.
Her father is a mix of English and Irish. Her mother is 3/4ths Creole and 1/4 Natvie American. This means that Kia is mostly Irish and African, with a smattering of Indian, German and English. Kia's skin is a nice creamy tan thanks to her genetic makeup. She is lucky in that she doesn't get acne or sunburns very often, so she rarely wears makeup aside from some eyeshadow. Kia is fairly tall, about 5'7" - 5' 8", and well proportioned. Her legs are long and have shape to them thanks to muscles gleaned from working on her father's ranch and her chest is well formed but not necessarily 'buxom'. Her muscles are well honed from working on the ranch, and as much as she hates to show them, she has her share of faint scars from the demanding work. When it comes to clothes, outside of work, Kia likes simple, classic and preppy styles. She likes straight or wide legged pants paired with fitted shirts that are generally layered and flat slip-on shoes. Skirts and heeled shoes are also definitely part of her wardrobe, but generally are kept for formal or other wise important occasions. Her clothes are simple, but undeniably feminine. Even though her personality seems hard and cold, her clothes are an example of her true thoughts.
Personality
Contrary to common belief, Kia is not a hard hearted person. In fact, she has a deep love of animals and underdogs, as well as a natural affinity for nurturing and healing. However, she is also very cynical when it comes to the intentions of others, a trait her mother shared and instilled in her from a young age. Kia believes that the best offense is a good defense, and she spends much of her emotional energy making sure her loved ones are happy and her home is take care of. She is very empathetic to others feelings and pain, but her antagonistic personality makes it hard for people to believe she is trying to help as opposed to hinder.
By nature, Kia is a extremely private person. She despises people delving into her personal life and will protect her person with every tool in her arsenal, including harsh words and even violence. Her aloof personality combined with her harsh reaction to nosiness has marked her as "Stuck Up" and "Spoiled" her entire life, even though she is neither. She hides her feelings with ease, and often people feel that she is stronger then she really is, resulting in her having to be the one who keeps things together when they fall apart.
However, she is neither stuck-up nor very emotionally strong. Insults and criticism hurt her very deeply, she is easily embarrassed and she is terrified of giving the wrong impression. However, in an attempt to protect herself, she has stifled her emotions and built up shields. She only comes out of her shell when around those she cares for and trusts deeply.
Because she hates being criticized, Kia is a very competitive and stubborn person, a trait she got from her father. She hates being showed up and will fight tooth and nail to overcome any challenge handed to her, at whatever cost. She also hates the idea of admitting defeat and will absolutely refuse to do so if she feels she is right about something. Although her ambition, determination and, seemingly, confident nature are the characteristics of a great leader, people often see it as a negative thing. It can be said that this combination of traits was what landed her in the Slytherin house.
History
Anyone who met Sean Ferris and Celestine St. Murfordt, back when they were in the Hufflepuff house of Hogwarts, would tell you that they were the most unlikely couple to ever attend the school. Sean was a gentle, caring but stubborn young man who's love of animals and dog like loyalty earned him a spot in the Badger house. Celestine was a cold, aloof but quick-tempered young woman who's strong work ethic and love of plants and potions earned her a spot in the same house a year later. They were like fire and water the moment they met on the Hogwarts express, when Sean tried to befriend the lonely looking girl only to be rebuffed coldly. He didn't give up however, and spent the next couple years slowly breaking down her many defenses until she finally counted him amongst her only friends. In fact, his tenacity and kindness lit something inside of her, and Celestine grew to love him. She would keep this a secret until a month or so before Sean graduated from Hogwarts, revealing it to him over Christmas break (since neither went home for the holidays). Sean was surprised, but found himself willing to reciprocate those feelings. The two begin courting in early 1984, with Sean graduating and starting his training with the DoRCMC in the Dragon Research and Restraint Division shortly after. When Celestine graduated a year later, in 1985, the pair were quickly married in a small and private affair. They would then fight for custody for Celestine's paraplegic father, Omar St, Murfordt, who had been paralyzed years before when apprehending some dark wizards as an Auror. When they won, the small family moved to Surrey and Celestine would start training to be an Auror.
This is where Kia comes in. The couple had barely begin their new life together when Celestine discovered she was pregnant. Nine months later, Kiana Selena Ferris was born on June 27th, 1986 in her parents cozy little home in Surrey. The first ten years of Kia's life were peaceful and happy ones. Three years after her birth, her mother added a second child, Kale Omar Ferris, on June 10th 1988. The two hit it off since day one, and would becomes best friends and partners in crime from the moment Kale could walk. Kia spent her early years playing in the countryside, learning to cook and garden from Celestine and learning about magical creatures from her father. Nothing else really happened in those years, at least, not in Kia's personal life. It wasn't until the summer of 1997 that the ills of the world reached Kia's knowledge. She was slated to start Hogwarts that year, and was beyond excited, but a month or so before she was to pack up and head off, her father made a devastating announcement. The family would be moving to America. At the time, Kia was only vaguely aware of the turmoil of the wizarding world. She knew her mother was coming home later and later, more irritable and tired each time, and that her father had to take a break from work after an accident (the details were not given to her, but she would learn later that he was threatened by some purist coworkers). The idea of leaving their comfortable little home and moving to some strange land frightened Kia, but nevertheless, she packed up her things and followed her parents to a new life in the US.
It was at this point that Kia's personality begin to shift. She started hitting that age where girls naturally begin to be moody and sullen, but her moods were affected further by the war and the drama in her own life. When they got to America, they joined Celestine's maternal family in the Bayous of Louisiana. While Celestines' Grandmother Zelda was kind to the family, many of the other family members were not. Since the Petembers were a proud pureblood family, many of its family members ostracized and demeaned the Ferris' for not only their blood purity but for their interracial marriage. Kia learned quickly what was going on in the world, first hand. She closed in on herself in order to protect herself from the hatred, like her mother had taught her, and only really spoke to those closest to her. School didn't make things any better, since she was separated from her family to go the Salem Witches Institute, where her mother and father couldn't protect her from those classmates who found her blood status inferior. To make matters worse, right before the end of her first year, disaster struck the Ferris family in a way they never expected.
At the time, Celestine was working for the American government as an Auror. She had barely started her new job when she and a couple coworkers were sent to track down some Death Eaters that had managed to escape to America. The details of the battle were withheld from the family. They don't know how or who or what did it, all they knew was that Celestine had been murdered in the line of duty.
She died a hero and was awarded a post mortem Order of Merlin 1st Class, but awards and accolades do little to mend a child's broken heart. This was especially true for Kia and Kale. While Kia just hid inside of herself even more then before, becoming thorny and cold, Kale begin to act out with what seemed like harmless pranks. With Celestine gone, the Petembers had no reason to allow her mudblood widow and troublesome kids to stay and Sean found himself packing up his already traumatized family and moving once more. He managed to get a job working for an old friend in Scotland who owned a magizoology ranch and for the next several years, the remains of the Ferris family would live in a small ranchhouse provided by his boss.
Kia had just finished up her second year at SWIM when her mother had passed and was ecstatic to learn that she would be attending Hogwarts now rather then continuing at that hellhole. Despite the normal rules regarding transfer students, Sean managed to strike a deal with the school (which wasn't difficult considering the school had taken a huge hit with the war and was in dire need of returning students) and Kia would start her 3rd year in the fall of 1999. She was surprised and horrified when she was sorted into, of all placed, Slytherin. Perhaps the hat wished to diversify the house since it was no longer the pureblood bastion it once was or perhaps the anger and darkness that had been building up in Kia's heart had kept her from getting into the other houses. Whichever it was, Kia joined the Slytherin house and, much to her dismay, faced the exact same problems she was trying to escape from. Many of her housemates ostracized her, and her quiet nature and cold demeanor frightened many of the other students, leaving her pretty lonely. Even though Kale joined her at Hogwarts that year, Kia still felt the cold clutch of loneliness. Her brother was sorted into Hufflepuff and even though they saw each other often enough, he always seemed to have friends and pranks to pull. Kia spent the next four years fighting her way through school.
Upon leaving Hogwarts in 2004, Kia found that life was beginning to look up. Her fathers childless boss passed away and in a surprising show of charity, gave his ranch and money to Sean. Using some of his new found wealth, Sean opened a Magizoology clinic in Diagon Alley. Kia, who much preferred the company of animals to people, and Kale, who simply needed a way to stay out of trouble, were hired on as his helpers. It wasn't long before Kia proved her skill with healing and became a full fledged Healer herself. With this newfound confidence, Kia begin to make some changes, starting with her appearance. Through her teen years, she was a bit of an ugly duckling, with frizzy hair, glasses and on the pudgy side. She worked hard to fix herself up, straightening her hair, ditching the specs and toning her somewhat pudgy body into womanly curves. She also reconnected with the few friends she had in Hogwarts and tentatively begin having something of a social life, as it were. Things couldn't be better, which made her nervous since bad things always seemed to come when things were good.
Sure enough, a couple years passed and something did happen. Her brother Kale had continued to get in more and more trouble, acting out his repressed remorse, and after graduating from Hogwarts in 2006, he begin to party hard. He started to stay out very late, drink heavily and even dabble in narcotic potions. It was after a night of this that he and his closest friend were stumbling home during the full moon. Unknown to the party boys, there was a wanted werewolf on the lose in the area and sure enough, they were quickly cornered by the monster. His friend was killed in the scuffle but Kale somehow managed to fight off the werewolf, suffering some major wounds in the process. He was lucky in the end, he was not bitten or turned, but he did end up in the hospital. With a new lease on life, Kale vowed to never touch alcohol or illegal potions again and to get his life in line. In the following years, he would do so. In 2008, he even started working for St. Mungos as a Healer-in-training after finding himself admiring the work of the healers who cared for him.
This blow, as much as it helped Kale, had a huge effect on Kia. Before then, she had no issues with werewolves, but after nearly losing her brother and knowing that the werewolf responsible for his wounds is still out there, she could no longer remain so neutral. She didn't become anti-werewolf per say, knowing that there was good ones out there that made sure they didn't hurt others, but she longed to bring those that enjoyed their bloodlust to justice. She begin to study the creatures exhaustingly in hopes to one day hunt down the one that hurt Kale. Meanwhile, once his son was back on track, Sean had a bit of a midlife crisis and decided that he wanted to explore more. In the summer of 2008, when he was given a chance to work for a very wealthy Brazilian wizard as a personal Magizoologist, Sean shut down the ranch and left the clinic in Kia's hands so he could move to Brazil. Kia and Kale both moved in with friends, Kia with her close friend Maggie and Colette, and continued on with their newfound freedom.
Kia didn't like working at the clinic on her own. She wasn't fond of dealing with people and found herself overwhelmed trying to keep up all the work her father left her. When she and Kale spent the winter in Brazil with her father, Kia worked up the guts to ask him if she could look for a different job. After much thought, she had finally decided to join the Werewolf Capture Unit and hunt down the man who hurt Kale. Sean was uncertain about her reasons to approach such a dangerous career, but knowing that she was her mothers daughter and could take care of herself, he relented. When she returned from Brazil in February, the Ferris Magizoology clinic was shut down and Kia applied to work for the WCU. With a hero Auror as a mother, a former dragon trainer as a father and several years working with all sorts of magical animals, she was readily accepted. At 23 years old, Kia is finally finding a comfortable place to be.

[Sum up your character in one paragraph:] Kia Ferris is a young woman who believes in actions rather then words, which she shows by being quite quiet and aloof with anyone she doesn't know. Called an "Ice Queen" in school, Kia has had to deal with her less then pure blood and families poverty for most of her young life. She has now made a name for herself as a magizoologist for the DoRCMC and hopes to slowly break down the walls of ice she has put around her heart.
