How the Astronomy Final Works

Getting Your Grade
This test is graded in one of two ways.

Reply to this thread.
The first is to reply to this thread with a role played post of your student taking the test. Based on that post, I will determine their grade for the class. This is based on the 'surprise me' idea of grading.

Send Tapendra Trishna a PM.
Your PM needs to follow these guidelines:
    • Needs to have the title format of "Year / Student Name" (5th Year / Jane Doe)
    • You need to state what grade you want your student to have.
    • You need to explain what they have done in the class to receive that grade.
If I feel it is necessary, I may question your reasoning, especially if your requested grade is sharp contrast to your student's performance in past class threads and on the board as a whole.

Code for Personal Messages
Code: [Select]
Student Name:
Requested Grade:
What Have They Done to Earn This Grade?:
Failure to reply or to PM me by the end of June (in game) will earn your student an A regardless of their in-game performance.

Please finish your test in one post and keep it in the quote format. While students are free to talk to each other, limiting the chaos would be lovely.

If a student who has been struggling all year submits an O test, I may request that you justify that.

Having the students in the Astronomy Classroom during the day was bizarre, but over the last few days Tapendra had become used to it. He'd enchanted the windows with something a little different today, largely for his own benefit.

"Hello, everyone," he said, when the first years were assembled; he waved his wand and the reams of parchment flew towards them. The test was long, though probably not as long as some of the others. "Hopefully you'll all prepared for this, eh? Most of it is multiple choice, though I do expect thoughtful answers to the essay questions."

With the parchments passed out, he took to patrolling, walking in a loose circle and eyeing the children as they worked, reading their answers. Occasionally, he'd frown - having a bad poker face during times like these wasn't  always the best...

Ormen came into the classroom fairly timid. He was not a big fan of Astronomy, it was so boring in his eyes. What did magic have to do with space and the stars? Although he may have been disregarding the magical properties that lived throughout the universe, Ormen still detested this subject. He didn't do great, but he didn't do horrible; he didn't pay attention unless the subject they were taking on actually interested him, which wasn't much. No matter, he still had to sit the exam, and he still had to get it over with.

Walking over to a desk, he sat down and puffed when Professor Trishna handed out the final. The last of the students immigrated into the classroom, and he was queued to begin:

Ormen took one last look over his test... he had done alright, at least he thought. He rested his chin on his fist and surveyed it a couple times before agreeing those were his final answers. He looked around the class, then back to the test, awaiting for the end of class. He had the feeling that the T-Rex perhaps was not alive in Jurassic, but perhaps Cretaceous... shrugging it off and deciding not to second guess himself, he waited.

Suffice to say, even with a year under professor Trishna's tutelage, the only thing stopping Heliotrope from learning the scientific names of the stars were years of seeing them from the surface of her loch. One those colds nights when the skies were clear, the merfolk tribe spent hours at night telling of the legends.[1]

Obderedria was surprised during her first year of Astronomy. Many of the topics were the same as what she had learned in muggle school although even then it was challenging to take in. She wasn’t horrible at Astronomy, at least the basics Professor Trishna had given them this year but she still had trouble spelling a few of the constellations.

Studying under Professor Trishna highlighted the muggle science that could explain a few things wizards took for granted. Philo honestly found some of it more interesting than his Dad’s old tales back when he was living in muggle London. Philo knew he would do well during the test and star charting later. His puzzle analyzing mind recognized the shapes you could trace with the constellations and how those related to their names. And he wasn’t looking for trouble; the faulty omnioculars were in his trunk until he could tinker with them over the summer. Imagine, accidentally writing ‘Draconian Double Back’[1] on the answer sheet.

Unlike many students, Peter looked forward to exams. Of course, they made him nervous, but they were also a chance to prove himself to his professors. While Astronomy was not as useful a class as many others, it was much more logical than most. Either you knew the answer or you didn't.

The Hufflepuff slid into his seat, only taking a brief moment to admire the new view from the windows, and pulled out his special test-taking quill: a brown-and-white mottled owl quill. He shot a grin and a thumbs-up at Philo before setting to work. Rather than work straight through like some students might, he skipped around, filling in the answers that were easiest before going back to think over the ones he had trouble with.

8. (Essay Question) What is a dinosaur?
A dinosaur was a reptile that lived over 65 million years ago. There were many species of dinosaur from the most famous, Tyrannosaurus rex which was a carnivore to the herbivore triceratops and stegasaurus. The triceratops and stegasaurus were both heavily armored because they had to defend themselves from the carnivores, and the stegasaurus even had thagomizer spikes on it's tail for this purpose. Some of the plant-eating dinosaurs had to swallow some special stones to grind up their food and some birds still do this today, because birds are descendants of dinosaurs. In fact, contrary to the movie Jurassic Park, fossils show that some dinosaurs probably had feathers, and not even just the ones who flew. There were also swimming dinosaurs which may be why we have swimming birds like penguins.

Finally finished, he set his quill aside and glanced around surreptitiously glanced around to see who else seemed to be done.

Eirene's hands were reaching out for the test the second Professor Trishna waved the parchment to their desks with a flourish of his wand. She flipped it over, scanning the questions with a rabid, excited gleam in her eye. This was their second test on their first day of testing. Eirene was extremely nervous, but had studied like a fiend, especially for Astronomy, because she looked up to Professor Trishna and wanted to excel for her Head of House.

Eirene's strength was memorization and theory-based subjects, so this part of the Astronomy test suited her well. She methodically answered each question in order, taking extra care with her penmanship and spelling. Her head bent close enough to the desk that her braids brushed the parchment, and she frowned in concentration every minute or so.

8. (Essay Question) What is a dinosaur?

Di.no.saur. Noun. A dinosaur is any group of extinct often very large chiefly terrestrial carnivorous or herbivorous reptiles of the Mesozoic era![1]

The word dinosaur is Greek in origin! Deinos means terrible and powerful and wondrous, and Sauros means lizard! So really big terrible lizard!

Dinosaurs lived many years ago, spacifically from the late Triassic period to the Cretaceous period. They lived over 160 million years! Some dinosaurs were carnivorous, meaning they ate meat, while others were herbivorous, meaning they ate plants. For example the Sarcosaurus is a carnivore and the Brachiosaurus is a herbivore and also tallest. There are over 1,000 species of dinosaurs! Many dinosaurs are bipedal which means they move using their two rear legs!

Sadly and unfortunately the dinosaurs went extinct about 65 million years ago at the close of the Mesozoic era. It was very sad for the dinosaurs. What isn't sad is that dinosaurs lived on every continent and left fossil remains so the humans could find them and study them! We think asteroids, volcanoes, and combinations of catastrophik events caused extinction to happen.

Birds evolved from dinosaurs! Dragons might have come from dinosaurs! Tynan has the brain of a dinosaur!

Also Sasha says dinosaurs are in the film Jurassic Park and that I should see it but not with Noriko.

In conclusion dinosaurs are very diverse and interesting and big!

Keegan wasn't worried about having the right answers to this test. He loved space and astronomy, especially with Professor Trishna. For once he got to show off what he knew about muggle astronomy and actually know more than Spitz. He strolled into the classroom, a unfettered grin spread across his freckled face and for once took a seat towards the front. Cracking his knuckles and tapping his quill against the desk, Keegan waited impatiently for the test to be passed out. When it was, he tore into it immediately. The questions were easy enough, but he soon realized that while he remembered the words, he hadn't paid as much attention to the spelling. Why didn't it have word bank? They were 11! It was almost required at that age. Suddenly a bit more concerned, he lowered his head close to the paper and begin to write frantically, stopping here and there to scratch out a word and try to respell it. Oh why, he lamented inwardly, were they not allowed to use self-correcting quills?

Dahlia had decided early on that if she didn't receive an O on this exam she may as well drop out. Not because she was that hard on herself to get perfect grades but simply because she had been taught by Professor Trishna long before he ever came to Hogwarts and likley knew more about his theorties than anyone else in the class, safe for perhaps Cyhirae but she was his daughter so really she didn't count.

Dahlia was sat at her desk early, her green blue eyes scanning those around her before the actual test began. As expected Eirene and Peter looked as though their heads were going to burst from the amount of studying they had been doing, Philo had such a look of concentration on his face Dahlia thought she could actually hear the gears in his head turning and she wished she could help Professor Trishna grade the exams only for the chance to see what Heliotrope would actually write. The only student who seemed out of place was Keegan, she hadn't expected that coy and confident smile to broaden his features. She felt her heart skip a beat and had almost missed the test landing in front of her.

The Dinosaurs were a group of reptiles that roamed the earth millions of years before the most prehistoric of men. Much like any animal you find today they was a wide array of species amoungst them, as wide spread and diverse (if not more so) than any living creature. They ranged from as small as the microraptor to as big as the Argentinosaurus. The Dinosaurs lived for over 160 million years, from the late Triassic period (about 230 million years ago) until the end of the Cretaceous (about 65 million years ago), when the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event led to the extinction of most dinosaur species at the close of the Mesozoic era.

This sucked.  Actually, all of exams sucked.  And, by now, most of her professors ought to know that Mairead wasn't exactly the best exam-taker.  The only part of exam taking that was at all redeeming was that none of the answers could or should be produced in front of other students.  If she did horribly, no one else would know about it.

Except for Professor Trishna.

Whom Mairead didn't even bother looking at as she reached out blindly for her test paper, thumping it moodily on her desk in front of her.  There were few classes Mairead really did well in.  Astronomy, though, was one of her worst.  Perhaps it was partly her fault for not paying attention but, most of the time, whenever she did try to pay attention, the topic was so far over her head she immediately regretted the effort.  She couldn't wait until fifth year when she could pick and chose which classes to take.

It was probably going to be a short list.

Re: [June 1st | 1st Years ] Astronomy Final Exam

Pax had to smile at the new 'view' out of the Astronomy classroom windows today. Pax wasn't the best versed when it came to artists, but he was familiar enough with Van Gogh, and Starry Night was one of his favourites. It was the sort of painting that made him wonder if the muggle artist had guessed that magic was real.

However, there wasn't a great deal of time to muse about artwork today; he had an exam to think about. He glanced over to Eirene, and Noriko, and Mary Beth, giving each of them an encouraging look before the exam papers made their way to the desks. Breathing deeply and reminding himself not to panic, Pax looked over the sheet.

The first thing that drew his eye was the essay question. Dinosaurs! Pax suppressed a grin. That topic had been the easiest to study, because Pax found it so interesting. He'd save that question for last. As for the others, they weren't anything he hadn't revised. The Zodiac he knew, and he'd made up a story to help him remember some of the major constellations. There was a princess called Andromeda, daughter of  Queen Casseopeia and King Cepheus, who was held captive by a great bear... Before he knew it, he was half-way done. Pax wasn't used to feeling this confident during a test, but it was a pleasant sensation. He hoped Professor Trishna would be pleased too, to know all his good teaching had paid off, at least for Pax.

Pax dithered over a few of the multiple choice questions, almost putting 'convection' as the answer to question 5 before remembering that convection was heat expanding, not volcanoes forming. He also had to remind himself which space probe had done what before he was sure of the answer to question 9. But before long, he had done everything except the essay question, and he was quite sure he had enough time left to do that topic of dinosaurs justice. Resisting the urge to look up and see how his friends were doing, lest he be mistaken for cheating, Pax shifted on his seat to get more comfortable, and set down to scratching out everything he could think of about dinosaurs as quickly as he could manage without making his already untidy handwriting illegible. He stayed focused on the page the entire time he was writing, and didn't stop until the last possible moment. Professor Trishna probably couldn't have chosen a better essay topic for the young Hufflepuff.

8. (Essay Question) What is a dinosaur?
Dinosaurs were the dominant spesies species lifeforms on the planet Earth from the Triassic period, which was about 230 mill. years ago, up until they're their start towards extinction in the Cretaceous period, which was about 65 mill. years ago. They were reptiles that mostly lived on the land (some of them could fly) and could either have two legs or four legs.

Dinosaurs were a very, very large and varied group of animals. There are over 500 types that scientists have discovered, and there was a very wide range in size. The smallest known dinosaur was Anchiomis, which was 40 cm tall 30 cm 35 about the size of a small bird. (Birds are also believed to have evolved from a type of dinosaur called theropods. Anchiomis was a theropod.) The largest dinosaurs were a type called the sauropods, which were all quadropedal quadrapedal four-legged. It is difficult to know exactly how big the biggest dinosaurs were because it is difficult to find all the pieces of their skeletons, but the tallest known dinosaur was the Sauroposiedon Sauroposeidon, which was almost as tall as a six-story building. No dinosaurs have been found to be bigger than the blue whale, though.

As well as different sizes, different dinosaurs had different diets. Some dinosaurs, like the famous Tyrannosaurs Rex, were carnivores, and preyed on other dinosaurs. Others, like Triceratops, were herbivores, which meant that they ate plants and tried not to get eaten by the carnivores.

The dinosaurs died out at the end of the Mesozoic period because of something that happened towards the end of the end of the Cretaceous period that started wiping out dinosaur life. Scientists are not sure exactly what happened, but it was either an asteroid or volcanoes blocking out the sun and stopping plants from growing, or gradual changes to the planet that made it not condusive good for dinosaurs anymore, or a combination of lots of things. It is quite sad that the dinosaurs went extinct, but if were still alive today, then humans might not exist. Or they might have existed but been eaten by dinosaurs.

The reason scientists are able to find out about dinosaurs is from fossils and skeletons. Sometimes the dinosaur skeletons are rebuilt and put on display in museums so more people can learn about them. From research we know that birds probably evolved from dinosaurs, and probably dragons did as well, though muggles don't know that. We have learned lots of interesting things about dinosaurs from all the research and arceolo archologic digging for fossils, and I would write a lot more about them but I am out of time.

Dinosaurs were a diverse group of animals that were the dominant terrestrial vertebrates for over 160 million years, from the late Triassic period (about 230 million years ago) until the end of the Cretaceous (about 65 million years ago), when the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event led to the extinction of most dinosaur species at the close of the Mesozoic era. The fossil record indicates that birds evolved within theropod dinosaurs during the Jurassic period. Dinosaurs were reptiles, that hatched from eggs, and were one of the most successful groups of animals to walk the earth. They are the ancestors of birds, and possibly of dragons.
