United Kingdom.Vivienne E. ThorpeHealers' Room, Fourth FloorSt. Mungo's HospitalGreater London. 19th of May, 2009Directed towards Miss Una Sophia FreherDear Miss Freher, Allow me to introduce myself as Healer Thorpe of the St.Mungo's Hospital in London. I have heard of your position as a trainee Alchemist at the Ministry of Magic and am writing to seek your assistance on a matter close to my heart. Firstly, I would like to apologize for being unable to call upon you in-person-- the routine bustle of my wards has kept me from coming to meet you myself during your recent visit. In my latest position as a Healer on this floor, I have been assigned to treat and observe many long-term patients who suffer from upsetting (even violent) anxiety attacks. They are susceptible to basic sedation spells but many patient have refused our liquid sedatives, mainly because the potions possess a tendency to warp the taste of the drinks or foods we attempt to disguise them with. As a result, I have been trying to brew a tasteless and more undetectable sedative in my free time at the hospital. My findings have been mixed. Most of the potions are tasteless but ineffective. One of the prototypes appeared to be quite effective but would only work if disguised in a tablespoon of castor oil. I would greatly appreciate it if you would be able to lend me your abilities as an Alchemist in my pursuit of a suitable concoction. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Yours Sincerely,Healer Thorpe Standing at an open window in the break room on the fourth floor of St.Mungo's, Vivienne reread her letter several times before rolling it up. It was a good balance of formality and friendliness, the witch hoped. With that in mind, she sealed the parchment with a bit of wax and a heating charm before looking down at the window sill, where a big grey owl stared up at her wonderingly. One of the medi-witches had been kind enough to lend her the creature. Viv attached the messaged, murmured conversational nonsense to the owl ("What a pretty thing you are, I'm sure you'll have this beautifully delivered") and sent it off into the grey English sky, just as it was beginning to drizzle. Someone must have received and left there for her - she didn't minded that only because she was not used to get any personal letter at all. That could only be about work, and she even thought about Foley contacting her already - Una's mind was still on the meeting of the day before. She opened and read with some surprise who was the sender, then sat on her chair and read the rest carefully, bringing her mind back to the present at the end of it, thankfully. Miss Thorpe seemed to be really sweet and truly concerned about her patients, and that was touching for Una. What she was asking, though, was not so simple to answer, and she had to take a long time considering over a great book wrote and illustrated by Theophrastus von Hohenheim[1], man of her life, and took some notices before actually writing to Vivienne.Delivered by Owl Post to Vivienne E. FreherPotion & Herbological Research OfficeDepartment of MysteriesMinistry of MagicUnited Kingdom19th, May 2009Miss Thorpe, You don't have to apologize for anything. During my visiting yesterday I wouldn't be able to give the attention you and your matter deserves. Feel free to write me whenever you need, and I'm sure we'll be able to meet in person soon. I truly hope that the following may be helpful for you and your patients. For the taste problem I suggest you to consider carefully the use of ointments or scents. Unfortunately, the only formulas I have now should be manipulated by alchemists only. Both ways, ointment and scent, affects the brain directly and most of the plants and herbs with calming effects can cause terrible hallucinations, lethargy and death if the quintessence of the plant were not respected. To search for the perfect disguise for the taste of a potion, I must have it so I can study it's properties. If it helps your research, there is a plant, the Helleborus niger, known as Christmas rose, that purge the thoughts and can be pretty helpful on the violent cases. It's powder can be mixed with rye bread, soups and even sugar or honey. Prepared with lemon balm or agrimony can make a good liquor, and, well, both are calming too and their tastes are not so bad. Some care should be taken when using it, though. Never replace for any other plant, no matter how they look or reacts the same; never use any part of it except the roots, the rest is extremely poisonous; and respect always the use of 30 grams per day, nothing more. Such mistakes almost made this little gift of the nature be prohibited. Here I have the condition of raising this moody plant, but it can take a while. If you want, I'll send you a sample as soon as I can and more specific instructions. We can work together on this. I have a list of sedative herbs and calming formulas, but some are so ordinary that any muggle mother might know, and others are so highly dangerous that it's best to discuss their uses in private. It's not an easy task, to ease someone's pain or anxiety. I truly admire your concern. Thank you for your trust.Best Regards,Una FreherShe wrote and rewrote, adding and deducting information so it could be helpful without being exaggerated. It was important to her sound interested and capable of help someway. The matter was almost personal to her. Anxiety was still a kind of ghost in her life and, for as much as she strives to control it, her remained ups and downs wasn't pleasant. Una ran up some levels at the Ministry and sent a owl quickly with the reply to St. Mungos, afraid of being caught using an official owl as if she wasn't still an employee there. 1. ThorpeThird Floor CorridorClarewood CourtGreater London, U.K.21st May, 2009Hello again Miss Freher, I enclose with this letter a vial of a recent prototype for my potion. Its dominant ingredient is a serum infused with the essence of valerian root and lovage. It is a mild elixir as I have been hesitant to experiment with potentially dangerous ingredients. I have also utilized powdered moonstone, a common addition to the Draught of Peace. This has helped mellow the scent of the valerian although I don't think this has rendered the potion as tasteless as we need it to be. If anything, it seems to be an excellent sleeping aid. Your mention of the Christmas rose takes me back to the Draught of Peace. We use the draught on willing patients (which, to be honest, defeats the point) and the hospital possesses an excellent store of hellebore syrup. However, we do not use its raw or powdered roots- this strikes me as a component which could help balance my more ineffective prototypes in our favour. I would greatly appreciate it if you could send me a sample of this plant whenever possible. Considering its properties, maybe it would be more convenient for us to meet in private? Neither of us have restful lifestyles, naturellement , but the purposes of this experiment merits a scheduling effort. Thanks so much for your prompt reply and I hope to hear from you soon!Take care,Healer ThorpeVivienne Thorpe stood in the passageway just outside of her apartment. Her door was propped open slightly and the strong scent of valerian came drifting from inside, a soothing but somewhat unpleasant odour. The large windows that ran along the corridor opened into a space between the flat buildings and the blue afternoon sky was a square patch bordered by red brick. Viv looked out, envelope in hand and a tiny owl on her forearm. Good weather for mail. She shifted her gaze down to the owl (her landlord's, this time). "Una Sophia Freher. Curious name, oui?" The creature only blinked in reply and she smiled calmly at it. She needed her own owl, someday. Vivienne tied the envelope to the owl's leg- with the vial inside, it was a little heavy and there was a chance it would drop if not secured. Finally she sent it off and returned to her apartment. Hopefully the muggle neighbours would not complain about the smell. A little too eagerer. So when she received the reply on Thursday, even noticing by the weight that the Healer must had accepted to send her a sample of the potion she was working at, Una still waited for a free time away from the Unspeakables to read it carefully. If there was something negative she would be able to deal with it alone. So she felt a lot more light when finally read. Vivienne was a really nice person. But this time Una took the letter and the vial home, and thought a little more deep before writing.Una S. FreherLubet HouseTeesdaleDurham, U.K.23th May, 2009Dear Miss Thorpe, Your potion is really smooth, must be great to younger patients and to induce and maintain sleep. Older patients who suffer from anxiety must already had tried Valerian based potions, and on these cases it's possible that they've developed resistance to the ingredient. Anyway, I believe you are able to find an universal formula and change it according to the patient's historic. Well, the biggest problem of your potion's odor and taste is, precisely, the Valerian root. Milk can soften it, as well as Coriander seed oil - but I believe it would do the same job as the Castor oil, except that Coriander is spicy and could enhance the taste of Lovage. Do a herbs amalgam can conceal the taste too, but it would take a little time to find out the right mixture. Maybe Chamomile, Peppermint and Passion flower could work. Muggles usually make tablets of Valerian and cover it with certain kinds of sugar that doesn't interfere on the substance. But the scent is not totally covered even in these ways. I could try to separate the acid of Valerian and work on it, but I can't assure that it would preserve the essence of the plant. Part of it's action is on the taste, unfortunately. The use of the powdered roots of Hellebore with food is a antique Paracelsus method, not much disseminated, I guess. He believed that the habit of eating it everyday could bring only good to the body and the soul, but the misuse and the toxic property of the Hellebore was a hindrance to his ideas. Tell me when and where would be fine for you, for I believe my agenda is still more free than yours. We could met whenever you wish. Bests regards, Una S. Freher It was funny to send something from home, Una wasn't used to do it. So that Aria, her father's owl, seemed a little surprised when received the task of go to London from her. “Could you deliver it to the beautiful lady healer, please, sweetheart?” she asked gently to the owl. Una had no idea how Vivienne looked like, but by her way to write, she imagined a beautiful, delicate lady indeed. I have since begun experimenting on several other prototypes and, just as quickly, put them to rest for various reasons. This is clearly going to be a tedious process and I am beginning to see that the Valerian root is unsuitable for my purposes. Which, naturellemente, means that the powdered root of Hellebore is my next focus as a key ingredient. Your assistance would be more than useful for such an undertaking. Are you maybe available to meet on the 28th or 29th of this month, then? My shifts at the hospital may be demanding but I have requested a brief reprieve during the weekday in order to work on this potion. It would be prudent for us to meet someplace private if we are to be discussing dangerous components. Might I suggest someplace within either of our workplaces, or a muggle establishment even? I apologize for the brief nature of this letter but we're having another hectic evening up here in the Janus Thickey ward! Be well and best wishes. It dipped down towards the street slightly and then soared high into the typically grey English sky. She barely had time to scribble formalities today but this was an important letter- and Miss Freher was an important person, if she could help Viv with the brewing. At any rate, it was a relief to no longer have the stink of Valerian clinging to her robes. A sharp, thunderous crash came from outside the room and the Healer sighed. Back to work. FreherThat was more like a note than properly a letter, but still an important one. A week ago she received the first letter from Vivienne; two weeks ago she was starting at the Department of Mysteries; and life was running a little faster than she imagined. Una still couldn't tell if that was a good or a bad thing, but was sure challenging. The next step was meeting Thorpe and she hasn't lied about her feelings about it. Still there was always that insecurity shadow following her. But any other impression she would try to spare to Thursday. Skip to next post
