Bought from a merchant “at a near steal” as she and her mother were unfamiliar with wizarding culture. Great for charms, slow at transfiguration, and horrible in offense.
Physical Description: Overall, people would first notice her wacky hair, then how chubby she is.
Obderedria is rather plump for her age. She is sensitive about her size. Her mother says she looks cherubic. Her face is round and actually looks lean, even her neck. Sometimes you can’t figure out her real weight if you only see her face. She has green polka dots in her reddish-brown copper hair, its natural color being somewhere between ginger and chestnut. This was caused by her first instance of magic, while dying her hair a different color. The spots are permanent. Each strand of hair grows a pattern of brown and green, so gatherings of hairs match up a circular spot. She speaks softly. She has soft hands, a light touch and good penmanship.
Obderedria fancies comfort for her clothes. She tends to wear solid colors or stripes, typically white, black, yellow or orange. She’s quick to fiddle her fingers together and “shrink” as she withdraws into herself when nervous. She knows how to look presentable although she doesn’t always have the effort for it. But she will make sure that her mouth and teeth are clean after eating, aided by packets of Tooth-Flossing Stringmints. Despite looking squishy, Obderedria is much heartier than she looks, taking hard work or bitter weather in stride.
Drea is also slightly near sighted and requires vision correction. She’s worn glasses since she was seven. When she was nine her mother encouraged her to get soft contact lenses that she puts on and off each day. Sometimes she doesn’t have the energy to put them on and defaults to her spare glasses. However, she’s gotten adapt at inserting them with a Placement Charm, looking at a mirror image of herself in the morning. Her mother Patricia also utilizes the same combo of corrective eyewear.
Personality Description: Obderedria is rather shy and easily embarrassed by her odd name and weight. Obderedria is quick to have people call her “Drea” a much simpler nickname. She’s non-physical and has few friends, having close relationships only with her mother and American relatives. To keep from being lonely, Obderedria has an imaginary pen pal named Beverly and writes to her as one would write to a diary. She has a great love of food being a great food appreciator, having eaten nearly every type of cuisine via takeout when her mother has been rushed for dinner. Suffice to say, she is not a picky eater. Since integrating into the wizarding world Drea’s sweet tooth has grown, taking a liking to magical sweets her favorite being Fizzing Whizzbees. These sweets make her feel light on her feet, giddy, and carefree.
Otherwise Obderedria is a gentle and humble girl, being raised an only child by a single mother. She is rapt to do her chores and homework. She often day dreams, imagining herself in some fantastic circumstance, having a perfect life, or what her fictional pen pal Beverly would look like and their various adventures. Imagination is a powerful tool for Drea, freeing her from limitations she thinks the world has placed on her (or limitations she has imposed on herself). Whatever her activities (reading, watching movies or day dreaming) she’ll probably have a snack close by, although she's never greedy and likes sharing snacks with others, always making sure to leave a portion for them. She sometimes comes off as a worrywart, her compassion for the well being of others as thrown through a negative cycle. She never means ill for anyone but as her self-confidence grows she’ll begin to retaliate against those who have teased her. If someone asks her, Obderedria would try to help for even though she is young she is rather caring. Seeing a happiness in others allows her to live vivaciously through them, in a way, forgetting about her own loneliness. She starts off introverted but if given the chance she would think of a plan to combat her tormentors.
At the moment, she takes personal insults rather hard and dislikes being in the center of attention. This makes Obderedria self conscious so she strives to not to cause harm or discomfort to anyone because of her existence, hopefully so they will not notice or tease her. In some ways she feels more herself when away from the public eye where she feels people will judge her, developing hobbies such as her good penmanship or drawing ability, usually while snuggling with her pet kitten, Puddin’. Outside of letters to Beverly, her other writings read like the sappy notes of affection in a romance novel, written to completely made up or fictional personas of people she’s seen. These are stashed away and not shown. If alone, with a particular tune stuck in her head, Drea might sing. Or sing in an empty bathroom. Her lyrical voice is surprisingly rich and resonate, if untrained. However, she denies that she has any special musical skill.
Drea's secret strength, as her mother has always said when comforting her, is that she is a very special little girl despite what others might say. This was reinforced tenfold when she discovered she was a witch that could do magic. In her better moods, Drea likes being a little different ("Who else has natural polka-dotted hair? Name one person!"). With the proper boost of self confidence, she will be sure to soar at whatever she wants to do.
History: Obderedria was born to an American woman, Patricia Pienas, who moved to London a few years before Obderedria was born. Patricia works as a legal aide. Patricia knows that Obderedria’s father was a wizard, that he could perform magic, and that he named Obderedria when she was born. Then he disappeared, never marrying Patricia. She doesn’t know why, how or when he left. She can’t remember what he looks like or what his proper name is. This suggests the use of powerful memory charms. Patricia, through her unknown lover, has had limited contact with the wizarding world and knew that Obderedria would become a witch. She did manage to get a Ministry legilimens to probe her mind for the identity of the wizard but the results were fruitless, the memory charms, if any, too powerful. Patricia suffered a mild psychotic break afterwards and has not pursued her lover’s identity further. Drea has not been detrimentally affected by the lack of a father: she knows she must have one in order to be conceived but he just isn’t around. She takes many traits from her mother including lifestyle habits and the nature to worry too much.
Her most notable instance of wild magic was the hair-coloring incident that gave her the green spots, after which her mother explained that she was a witch. Obderedria looked forward to her future schooling at Hogwarts. She was pulled from her last year of primary school early after a nasty bout of teasing and public humiliation, since she wouldn’t be continuing with muggle schooling. Her mother Patricia has tried her best to find out about the wizarding world for the sake of her daughter but is still at most an outsider to the culture, leading to Drea getting a substandard non-Ollivander wand and other minor shortcomings. Upon finding a copy of A Wizarding World Guide, Patricia tried to campaign the need for a copy to be with every school acceptance letter sent to muggle-raised magical children but it was largely ignored and she later gave up. Obderedria’s status of being a halfblood to an unknown wizard as caused her to fall through the cracks of the wizarding world, lacking proper integration to the society given her muggle raising.
Drea and her mother still celebrate some American holidays, usually traveling to meet relatives. Her birthday has lined up a few times with Thanksgiving, one of Obderedria’s favorite times of the year. She has a pet black and white kitten named Puddin’, the runt of his litter, with white cheeks and white toes so it looks like he’s wearing gloves, except for one black toe on his front right paw.
During her part in the Sorting Ceremony, the Hat briefly considered placing her in Gryffindor. Obderedria was instantly against this idea, having heard that Gryffindors were wild and liked to be the center of attention, something her self-esteem couldn’t handle at that time. The hat then placed her in Hufflepuff. She’s an average student. She does well in Herbology, highlighting her Hufflepuff work ethic. Her wand is well suited for Charms. She also does well with Potions given the clear instructions and similarity to cooking. Her biggest academic disaster so far is in Transfiguration, probably due to her sub-standard wand and faltering confidence. Since the Welcoming Feast she’s been enamored with the Hogwarts food, which she defines as heavenly; one thing that saddened her was going home and missing Hogwarts Christmas Dinner. And since the holiday supervised trip to Hogsmead, she can't wait to be a third year when she can exploring the completely wizarding village as much as she wants on select weekends. She’s attended a few Art Club meetings but doesn’t think she has much skill.
How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Obderedria, initially, is not very brave or clever. Her humbleness, work ethic, underlying compassion and caring qualities are prime Hufflepuff traits. Frequently the target of bullying herself, she’ll try to comfort others she sees horrendously bullied if given time alone with them.
Her potential houses during her Sorting (Gryffindor and Hufflepuff) sounds similar to a certain Longbottom character. Drea is suited for Hufflepuff since she doesn’t go looking for trouble nor does she seek to solve her problems by fighting. But with a boost of self-esteem, perhaps she can become less of the insignificant doormat everyone considers her to be.
Writing Sample: Sum up your character in one paragraph: Obderedria “Drea” Pienas, a shy overweight girl with an unbelievable hairstyle that is willing to try her best, as a Hufflepuff first year should. She often escapes into fantasies.
