    Physical Description:

Alfie is of average height for a boy his age; standing at 5'8, he's not terribly tall, and with a slim stature and permanently sloped shoulders, he is rather unassuming. He's the sort of fellow that would quite easily disappear in a crowd, going unnoticed and unrecognised.

Facially, the boy is quite beautiful; high cheekbones inherited from the French side of his lineage frame a an angular, pale-skinned face. His mouth is wide-set, with a bow-like upper lip that is usually pressed inwards through nerves. A well-formed nose is a little crooked however from a punch to the face in first year, and an inch long scar is present under his left eye due to a similar incident. Brown eyes match messy, brown hair, and whilst being considered 'attractive' in the conventional sense of the word, Alfie's lack of confidence and quiet demeanour detract from his looks.

When not in school uniform, Alfie is often found in loose-fitting slacks, baggy t-shirts and battered-looking trainers; he tries to make himself look as appealing as possible, but there's only so much a sixteen year old boy can do in terms of style. An old cap is usually on his head to avoid the eyes of potential bullies in the corridor, and he's rarely seen without a backpack; he's a habitual horder - old quills, empty bottles and full exercise books are rarely thrown away out of absent-mindedness and teenage laziness.

Personality Description: Alfie is a lovely, good-spirited, kind young chap. It's just a shame that few know the real Hufflepuff inside-out. Relations to the infamous Dugan Macduff have rendered the boy on the fringes of the social circles within Hogwarts, and this combined with an abundance of nerves and insecurities mean that Alfie finds it difficult to really connect with his peers.

On the inside, the Hufflepuff has a heart of gold, and does almost anything for the people close to him; providing much assistance for a mother that nurtured his anxiousness, Alfie is helpful and conscientious when in contact with those he loves. Around those that truly know him, he isn't afraid of striking up a conversation, and his clumsy awkwardness is nowhere near as apparent as amongst strangers.

Unfortunately for Alfie however, upon his induction to Hogwarts, the boy was incredibly afraid of standing up for himself. As a result, most believe he's a complete pushover, which for the most part, is true; rather than respond with nonchalance or aggression, Alfie seems to take most of his insults on the chin. Only ever snapping on two separate occasions, the Hufflepuff is far too easy-going and submissive for his own good.

Flawed, troubled but ultimately a decent lad, Alfie wants to continue in Hogwarts with little trouble and usually keeps his head down - better to keep out of peoples' ways. Befriending people has exhibited limited success, but Alfie's familial connections often catch up with him, and a heckle or a hard time isn't far away.

History: Born five days after April Fool's Day at one minute past noon in 1991, Alfie's entrance to the world was somewhat remarkable. His father, Angus Macduff, was a purist, a sadist and most worryingly - a Death Eater. Angus's wife, Amandine Vaillancourt, was a French-born pureblood also, living in the Norfolk countryside and ultimately afraid of her husband's antics.

Angus met Amandine in his youth whilst holidaying in France, and a gradual but quaint romance was formed; in earlier days, Macduff was still undecided in his political beliefs, and Amandine had no inclination of his violent tendencies. Moving to England to marry the man she loved, the two set-up home and in the initial years, lived in newly-wed marital bliss.

Spurred on by the surge in support for Voldemort and his own family's beliefs, Angus Macduff was soon onside with the Death Eaters, and became increasingly violent and ferocious with his wife - who often disagreed with her husband's beliefs but was too afraid to leave. Raising Alfie alone, the toddler lived in isolation with his mother, Angus far too involved with plots against the Ministry to care for his wife and only child. The bond between mother and son was soon established, and Alfie developed a close affinity with the individual that solely cared for him. In times of potential danger, Amandine would often take Alfie into the cellar of the house and play make-believe situations; they had to keep quiet otherwise the Troll upstairs would find them, or they were explorers in the darkest caves of Peru - anything to distract young Alfie's attention from the miscreants taking advantage of the family home.

After meeting many accomplices, and seeing her home turn into a temporary headquarters for Death Eaters, Amandine escaped with Alfred on the night of his fifth birthday, utterly terrified of what could happen to her son. Going into hiding but lacking the heart to inform the Ministry of her husband's activities, Amandine stayed with friends and family, Alfie being raised predominantly by the Vaillancourts.

The conclusion of the Battle of Hogwarts saw Angus's arrest: he proudly pleaded guilty to five cases of murder and usage of the Unforgivable Curses, going into Azkaban for the rest of his life. Alfie hasn't spoke to his father since, and has few memories of the man; the only reminders he gets are in insults for having a slaughterer for a father and a coward for a mother.

Being selected for Hogwarts was always a given, and Alfie flourished academically but struggled in making friends. With a quiet dedication and a certain tolerance for all, Hufflepuff was always going to be Alfie's house. He was incredibly nervous about becoming a Slytherin (his father's background, and stereotypically the haven for all pureblood terrorists), and there was a heavy sigh of relief as Alfie joined his fellow badgers under the yellow and black banner. Likeable, but again, difficult to connect with, Vaillancourt begun his first months in Hogwarts encountering little problems; he wasn't a social butterfly, but was still on friendly terms with most.

Revelations of his true lineage emerged, and his relation to both Angus Macduff and his cousin, Dugan Macduff (another purist) became common knowledge. Reception amongst his peers was lukewarm to say the least. Penalised by purebloods for being a 'deserter' of sorts, and tormented by those who lost family members and friends to Death Eaters, Alfie's plight was almost hopeless.  This isolation only furthered Alfie's inability to make real friends, and at the end of his first year, the boy became something of a verbal punch bag for anybody wanting to be a bully for a day.

As far as girls were concerned, Alfie's had a few crushes but never had the guts to do something about it, and so plenty of females that may have had a thing for the shy, retiring type simply slipped through his fingers. Unsurprisingly, he's never had a girlfriend, or anything close to it - the boy has never been kissed, never been hugged, and a peck on the cheek from an older Hufflepuff girl after he fell off his broom was the most exhilarating experience of his romantic life.

And so, his life continues in the same vein - looking forward to graduation to break the cycle of loneliness and monotony of Hogwarts.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Alfie is strongly Hufflepuff in his quietness yet dedication to those he loves; helpful, and kind to those he feels comfortable with, he's a nice guy that displays no similarities to his paternal side of the family yet receives all of the hostility they've garnered. Despite this, Alfie still plods along, attempting to get his schooling life over and done with.

    Writing Sample: N/A

Sum up your character in one paragraph: Shy, awkward, clumsy and kind-hearted, Alfie is lovable through his flaws but lacks a distinct group of close mates that would help him eliminate his insecurities and lack of self-confidence. Close to his maternal side of the family yet haunted by the mistakes of the paternal, Alfie is determined to finish Hogwarts with good grades and closure to enough bad memories.
