Physical Description: Elly is 5'4". She's skinny in build with fair skin and a round face. She has large green eyes, long brown hair which is often unkempt looking (unless she ties it into a messy ponytail ) and a small turned up nose.
She has a couple of small scars on her right arm and sometimes gets fresh scrapes and bruises from her climbing excursions and explorations.
Because of a small astigmatism, Elly wears a pair of square framed glasses which have teeth marks on both earpieces from her constant chewing when she gets bored.
Personality Description: Elly is a kind and friendly person who can be relatively shy. Though she enjoys learning new things, she has a hard time staying focused if not actively engaged in some kind of activity (i.e. hands on activities in classes) and can be prone to a wandering mind which also fuels her active imagination.
One of her favorite activities has always been exploration of new places she visits. She loves to climb, no matter what the height. When alone she is often heard talking to her imaginary friends who seem to be the source of some of her more creative ideas.
Despite not having any siblings, Elly has always been one who has appreciated what she had and shared what she could with others without being told. She seems a bit sad at times because of her homesickness and unfortunately other students have picked up on this using it as a bludgeoning tool to try and get her down. This hasn't worked well at all, seeing as she has always countered with her quirky behavior, causing those who pick on her to see her as not right in the head. But this shouldn't fool anyone because she often knows exactly what she's doing.
History: Ellison was born on November 5, 1996 to muggle parents, Henry and Gewndolyn Hayter. Henry was a literature teacher at a college in the little town of Waterlooville and her mother often worked in the evenings as a transcriber for different businesses that needed their meeting minutes typed. As such, Elly remained an only child. It was during her first three years that her magical abilities began to come into light. When she was two, her mother's eldest sister visited for Christmas and brought Elly's cousins who were two years older than she. While her aunt was kind and caring towards her, the cousins enjoyed picking on her and making her cry. On this particular day, the two girls had chosen to play keep away with Elly's stuffed rabbit she had had since birth. Her parents were downstairs when one of the cousins screamed. Upon entering the room, they found the rabbit floating high above the children's heads and mysteriously moving from one cousin's head to the next. This was the first of several instances which clued her parents into the idea that their child wasn't like others.
She was primarily raised by her father who taught her to read and write. It was also her father who taught her to use her imagination when solving problems. Her early years were spent reading books from the family collection in the study of their home and playing by herself outside where she could be found exploring the areas around her flat and playing alternate versions of the stories she loved.
When the time came for her to go to Hogwarts, her parents took the sum of the trust fund left by her grandmother and opened an account at Gringotts to help pay for school related fees so nothing she owned was second hand. Her first year of wizarding school has been somewhat of a transition since she was used to primary school up until just this year. She is aware that despite being a witch, she is different from the other students at the school who are "pure bloods". Despite this, she has managed to make several friends within her own house and in Hufflepuff. She misses her family but has not allowed it to dampen her experience at this new and wonderful new life she has started to make for herself.
How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Elly was sorted into Ravenclaw because of her of love of learning and exploring all aspects of life. Her constant desire to learn new things and the clever ways she found to solve any problem like it was a puzzle and her cheerful nature made her a prime candidate for the house.
Writing Sample: Elly had never had so many sweets in her life. Her stomach still ached when she got on the boat headed for Hogwarts, sitting with several nameless children her age. She didn't make much effort to speak with any of them but this was not entirely out of the ordinary. Before she came here, she had not had much contact with children her own age and as such was somewhat awkward socially.
Instead, she spent the journey across the lake admiring what was to be her new school and trying not to lose what she had eaten on the train due to her newfound sea sickness. It was like something from one of the books she read on those lonely afternoons at home when mum and dad were working and it was too rainy to go play. Her arms still had red marks from the small pinches she gave herself to make sure she wasn't dreaming.
The night air was cool to her, and caused her to pull her robes around her to stay warm. One of the boys next to her took notice.
"You were on the train with me," he said in a squeaky voice. His face was somewhat pinched making him look like an angry pug rather than a human child.
Elly jumped at the sound of his voice and turned, "I....I was? I don't remember you..."
He didn't seem to notice the shy stammer in her voice and continued, "My father says that this is the year muggle-borns won't be sorted. Best thing really."
Elly did not know what a "muggle" was supposed to be, but the tone of the child was enough to realize it wasn't something she wanted to meet, that is until another child spoke up behind her, a girl this time with mousy hair like hers with a chubby face and dark brown eyes. "Don't let him scare you," she said, "no one's ever NOT been sorted, pureblood or muggle-born alike."
"Muggles?" Elly asked finally, turning away from the boy. "What are muggles?"
The girl looked like she had seen a ghost, "Goodness, have you been living under a rock? A muggle is....you know.....someone who doesn't.....who isn't..."
"Filthy lambs who aren't gifted enough to mingle with the likes of us," the boy chimed in.
The conversation died down as they docked at their destination, and Elly found herself loaded with new questions. Questions which she would have answered by someone who wasn't so scared to tell her.
Sum up your character in one paragraph: Elly is a shy but friendly girl of 11 who is just beginning to understand the wizarding world for the first time. As such, she uses her optimistic attitude towards learning as a means of keeping herself from being homesick and making her own headway in an unfamiliar situation. She can often be heard discussing hard problems with herself in a tree or in a secluded area such as the library, probably somewhere high up.
