Wand: Padauk with a Runespoor fang core and a spiraled shaft, 7 inches, inflexible, yet slightly brittle. Left to Ventus in his fathers will.

Physical Description: Ventus stands at 5'7" tall, with his shoulders back and his head held high. He is rather thin, but still is very well toned for someone who rarely exercises. Ventus's skin is a light tan, and the color persists even though he rarely exposes himself to sunlight. He does what he can to keep his skin blemish free, and shaves ever few days.

He has long dark brown hair that is always slicked back, save one stubborn lock that falls in the middle. His face is thin and pointed; accented well with sharp cheekbones and a sharp jaw. His eyes are a light shade of brown, and are almost always seen glaring or scowling. On his left temple he has two thin, jagged, black scars that are perfectly parallel with each other.

Ventus dresses very well. He likes white, collared shirts, and black vests; he wears slacks at all times along with black leather shoes. He keeps his late fathers pocket watch in his vests left breast pocket.

He wears his wand around is wrist, with the point sticking out at the base of the palm of his hand, and he does so solely for looks.

Personality Description: Ventus is, by simplest words, fractured. He has a lust for power that does not seem quenchable, and he often doesn't care what it takes to obtain that power; as the end goal justifies the means. He can be cruel, selfish, manipulative, and violent. However, at the same time he can be incredibly compassionate towards those close to him. He would do anything to keep what's left of his loved ones safe. At times it can be hard to tell what the main reason he wants power for.

He relishes the suffering of others, and has a bad habit of purposefully inflicting pain, whether it be through spells or through orchestrating schemes. He can be a dangerous person to anger, as his revenge is never petty.

Ventus has a great interest in the Dark Arts, particularly Necromancy.

He also is a master of many faces, as his darkness is hidden by a facade of warmth and kindness. He will often attempt to comfort or console those who seem to need it; though he rarely actually cares about their problems.

History: Ventus's early life began like most others. He was born as the second, and youngest child to a loving family, Slyvia and Gordon Shang. His mother, Sylvia, was a muggleborn witch who had immigrated to Edinburgh shortly after her graduation from Salem Institute of Magic. It was there that she met Gordon Shang, a well educated entrepreneur from China. The two hit it off almost immediately and were soon married.

Five years after their marriage they had their first child, their daughter Filia de Favoni, Daughter of the West Wind. They then planned for their second child three years later; both hoped for a son. Three years after the birth of Filia, they were blessed with the birth of Ventus Orientalis Protectorem, Protector of the East Wind.

Growing up, Filia and Ventus often teased and tormented each other. From a young age both of them showed magical talent, and would harass each other both intentionally and accidentally. They argued over things like who was the favorite, and who would be the best looking when they grew up. Both of them had a thirst for magical knowledge.

When Ventus was six, tragedy struck the family when his father, Gordon, died suddenly, leaving his children nothing but a few items, and a vast family fortune. This forever changed Ventus's outlook on life. Where once there had been a cheerful boy, only a bitter cynic remained. He shed no tears at the time of his fathers funeral, or for many years after that, and he accepted by age seven that death can claim you whenever it feels like.

When he started his first year he looked similar to how he is today. He was a loner, he always dressed in his finest, and he always glared at the other students. The only person who seemed able to warm the ice in his veins was his sister. They were often seen conversing, and the two held a small, private memorial for their father every year.

At the end of his third year he was evacuated from Hogwarts, along with the other underage students. His sister, Filia, was seventeen at the time, and chose to stay and fight with the other Ravenclaws. She was killed during the battle; Ventus never learned who it was who caused her death, but he swore that if he ever found them he would personally escort them to the gates of Hell. His mother was devastated by the loss of her daughter and fell ill.

When Ventus was fifteen he traveled, in hopes of medicine for his mother, to Australia. It was there he met a young Australian witch named Jordan. Jordan was seemingly the exact opposite of Ventus. Where Ventus was cruel and vicious. Jordan was kind and gentle. Perhaps being polar opposites is the reason why the two were so attracted to each other. She became one of the few people who could calm him down when he was upset or angry. After spending the the better part of a month in each others company, the two agreed to do their best to try and keep the relationship going.

Near the end of his 5th year, his mother's illness became much more severe and she was bedridden. She refused to go to St. Mungo's for treatment, claiming life was barely worth living anymore. Eventually, she died in the early months of Ventus's 6th year.

Destroyed by the loss of his beloved sister and mother, Ventus fell further into darkness. He became much more reclusive, and his temper often flared.

Despite all this, Jordan stood by him, always doing her best to try and write him kind words. She gave him a two-way mirror for Christmas that year, in order to talk to him easier and to help him vent.

A few months after finishing his 7th year, Ventus proposed to Jordan. The two were married six months later.

Funded by his vast inheritance, Ventus began practicing and researching Necormancy.

Following their marriage the couple moved into Ventus's home in Edinburgh. From then, he began scouring Britain for books and other bits of research on Necromancy. He obtained a very old copy of 'Secrets of the Darkest Art' and poured through it's pages. He dismissed most of the magic in there, even going so far as to ripping out and burning the pages he found disgustingly evil. He eventually abandoned the book upon his shelves, as it didn't quite give him the answers he wanted.

He traveled to China when he was twenty-two, and found on their black market a second edition copy of the Necronomicon. Ventus was astonished, for the book went into great detail about the art of Necromancy, and the ritual and incantations needed to perform it.

With the book in hand, he returned to Edinburgh and began collecting specimens. He started small with worms, evenetualy moving up to ants, then spiders, flies, and bees. His confidence growing, he obtained rats, and began experimenting on them. However, much to his aggravation, the small rodents proved much more difficult to raise. The first few had worked perfectly, but he was never able to replicate the results.

Infuriated, Ventus spent six months pouring over his research notes. He could find no reason as to why he was unable to raise them.

He eventually decided that he must go back and simply try again. This time, he spent a whole year simply studying the effects on insects and arachnids, only moving on to mammals when he was certain it would work. Again, though, he struggled with bringing back the second set of rats.

Still uncertain of the problem, he once again stopped his tests and studied deeper into the craft. By his twenty-fifth birthday, he had decided that he would try again, and if he failed, he would give up entirely.

Writing Sample: A cool wind blew upon the balcony as Ventus stepped out onto it. He placed his hands on the railing and gazed out onto the starlit city. The moon was high in the night sky, and he thought for a moment he could make out the rabbit on it. He sighed and leaned onto the rail. Nothing was going as planned. His research was at a stand still, and he couldn't manage to replicate the results on higher organisms.

He sighed and pushed himself upright, quickly turning around and striding back into the parlor. Casually, he waved his arm in the direction of the fireplace, and it burst to life. He plucked a book off the shelf titled 'Achievements in Charming'. In reality the book was Ventus's research notes on the experiments he had been performing. To the standard observer, the notes were mostly gibberish, as it was written in code.  Ventus plopped himself down on the couch and flipped back to his previous work on spiders, and other insects.

From what he had recorded it worked well enough. The spiders that were raised were able to make webs, flies could resume flying, and the bees he had even pollinated a flower.

He swore loudly, losing his temper as he got to the first pages of mammals. He had managed to bring back a few rats that were able to go through a maze they had been trained on a few weeks earlier. But the second set he had raised were barely able to walk. The third set was even worse, they hardly were able to move and died only ten minutes after resurrection.

Ventus threw the book on to the coffee table and stood up, screaming in anger. What could possibly have gone wrong? It worked perfectly the first time, why couldn't he do it again?

He found himself back outside on the balcony, starring up at the night sky. He was breathing heavy trying to control himself, but his rage kept boiling up inside of him.

Hearing footsteps coming from inside, he turned and leaned back onto the railing. His wife Jordan stepped outside, dressed in her nightgown

She smiled at him. "Up late again," she said stepping next to him. "What's wrong?"

Ventus sighed. "Research," He said quietly looking at her.

"Square one again?" She asked. Ventus nodded. "I see," she said with a sigh. "Maybe you should let it go. We always were told in school that it was a branch that never worked properly. Not in the way you want it, anyways."

"Tell that to the Necronomicon,"Ventus replied quickly. Jordan sighed, they had had this conversation before. "But..." Ventus continued, "Perhaps you're correct."

She smiled and kissed him. "Sleep on it. Come back to bed." She turned and walked back into the house.

Ventus lingered a moment on the balcony before heading inside. He picked up the book containing his research notes and placed it back on the shelf, pausing as a he debated just tossing it into the fire. With a sigh he turned and extinguished the fire and headed for the bedroom.

No, he wouldn't give up yet. He just had to redouble his efforts.

Sum up your character in one paragraph: Ventus is a cruel ambitious man who puts up a facade of kindness. While he does genuinely care for some, he has a cold disregard for most others, delighting in their misery. He lusts for greater power, but while he delves in Dark Magic, he fully supports the Ministry as a level headed and fair government.

    Career Change Request

    Character Name: Ventus Shang
    Link to Accepted Biography: http://absitomen.com/index.php?topic=8019.0
    Previous Job/Position: Unemployed
    Position Applying For: Unspeakable

Why have you chosen to change careers?: Ventus has come to the conclusion that, while he has learned a great deal about death and the dead on his own, the only way to safely continue and to gain more knowledge is under the employment of the Ministry where he can use their resources.

On the same notion, Ventus also sees this as a decent way to help cover his tracks when it comes to his recent... dealings with Vesta.

Elaborate on your expertise in this new field: As far as the Ministry would be concerned, Ventus has a great deal of theoretical knowledge on the subject of death which he had gathered from around the globe, and the types of magic required to create inferi and walking skeletons.

Secretly, he of course is well accomplished in raising an army of skeletons which are no more than mindless slaves under the command of the Necromancer.

Describe your new job and how you go about doing it: Ventus spends his days in the death chamber, working with the other unspeakables in their quest to understand the mysteries of the soul. He studies how people become ghosts, along with how undead creatures are made. Often, he lends insight based off of Chinese mythology and magic.
