    Character Birthday & Age: January 12, 1995 (14)

Wand: 9 inches, Hornbeam, Leprechaun Hair, Inflexible

This wand has been passed down wizarding side of the O’Doherty family since an encounter with a Leprechaun. It’s a mischievous wand, good for dueling offense but not defense, and tosses in the occasional gimmick in other types of spells. Most notably, it refuses to give the counter curse for any jinx, hex or curse that it has performed. As the only school age member of his generation and scion of the O’Doherty clan, Casey is allotted to use the wand during his wizard training.

Physical Description: Casey is short, strawberry-blonde and sickly looking. His facial features are slightly androgynous, with his hair kept to a minimal length but not shaved. Until he builds up his strength he walks with a stoop, appearing even shorter, almost hunchbacked, but with a commanding presence. He always appears ill but is mentally resilient. This is shown by the hard look in his steeled eyes. His voice is high pitched, altering between masculine and feminine, lacking traditional Irish accents. He suffers from a weak immune system and various allergies, including cats, leather, and marshmallows. His family aim to bolster his physical and wizarding capabilities.

Personality Description: Casey has a tremendous chip on his shoulder, envious of the perceived better fortunes of others for having bodies not as detrimental as his. Well primed for a Napoleon complex, he develops great gobs of bravado and is quick to go to arms and hex back against some he disagrees with. Given his diminutive, sickly body he strives to prove himself with his magical abilities, attempting and practicing spells far beyond his year with mixed success. Despite his younger age he’s quite the duelist and puts up surprising fight. He also doesn’t mind flaunting the family wealth, one of the few things he can count on.

Casey has a poor understanding of relationships, viewing friends only as allies to further his goals until he is through with them. This is not to say that he is always outwardly hostile, except to those that greatly offend him, since he knows the best way to save face and lie low is to not go around like a bullying bigot all the time. Casey has a mind for deception, having spent most of his life as a kind of “performance act” to earn approval from his family and teachers. He knows when to suck up, bribe or condescend, his true frame of mind often bickering in disgust at the back of his brain when he must.

While his family has purist and dark mindsets, Casey is slightly less so. He discriminates against everyone equally and considers rallying against muggleborns and “filth” behind some lunatic Dark Lord to be narrow minded.

His family puts a lot of pressure on him to succeed. Overall Casey dislikes some of the O’Doherty practices but must continue on to keep his bevy of privileges. He looks to gain his own power, not only to prove himself to his family but also to usurp them in ways his father, Martin, could not when he attempted to leave the clan. His greatest ambition is to become self-made off of the benefits and disappointments life has given him.

People mostly notice Casey as being a grump when he is not getting his way nor succeeding at a challenge.

    History: FAMILY BACKGROUND
The magical O’Doherty family is an old Irish clan, sourced around the ancestral home, Doherty Manor, rendered Unplottable to muggles and located in Donegal County above Northern Ireland. Some time ago the then young O’Doherty maid, Éadaoin, tried to catch a Leprechaun. She managed to pluck some of its hairs and trick it out of some proper gold. Angered, the leprechaun fought back with a curse of the woes of wealth: the family would become corrupted by greed.  Éadaoin's child, the first to fulfill the words of the leprechaun, was used to carry on the family name as her siblings, all sisters, could not produce offspring. Éadaoin had married a cousin. A special wand was commissioned for the O’Dohertys from that leprechaun hair. Since then, the family has had good fortune when it comes to money and quickly became very rich. However, money has not bettered the attitude of the O’Doherty clan. Overall the family has been populated by foul people; there have been a few ancestors with conditions akin to Casey’s, most with vile attitudes. In-breeding at times to keep the family name alive has not helped the O’Doherty temperament, acting independent of the leprechaun's words but not at all helping. Preferably, the O’Doherty name is kept through firstborn sons.

Given their vast fortune, the O’Doherty clan does not need to work for profit. If anything, the family business is that of loan sharking. They are vocal in wizarding politics in the UK. Most of the elder members of the family have given into various vices such as excessive drinking and gambling, usually out of boredom. The residents of Doherty Manor are cared for by a family of house-elves that handle all menial labor. Some of the O’Dohertys have been vocally supportive of the Dark Lord and his follows, often donating money but never becoming Death Eaters. The family remains somewhat reclusive.

    Casey’s Family

Great Great Grandmother, finder of the leprechaun: Éadaoin

Current living O’Dohertys and their relation to Casey

Grandfather (Patriarch, heavy drinker, gambler, and loan shark): Ainbheartach
Grandmother (Matriarch, very bossy and insufferable): Neasa
Father (wizard lawyer, 1st born son of Ainbheartach and Neasa): Martin
Mother (muggle, weak immune system): Darla (nee Higgins)
Aunt (daughter of Ainbheartach and Neasa, 2nd born, drunk and lay about): Suanach
Uncle (son of Ainbheartach, 3rd born, gluttonous and a gambler): Torna
Aunt (by marriage, Torna’s wife, seductress): Maeve
Cousin (daughter of Torna and Maeve, 1st born, rather gloomy, three years behind Casey): Brona
Cousin (son of Torna and Maeve, 2nd born, rather ugly looking and pug faced, four years behind Casey): Kennedy

    CASEY’S BIRTH

Casey was born to Martin O’Doherty and the muggle woman he fell in love with, Darla Higgins. The O’Doherty clan didn’t approve of the relationship but Martin and Darla tried to make their family unit work away from the gaze of the older generations. Martin at first found a freedom with his wife as it allowed him to escape the corrosion and stuffiness of his family. Casey is their only child.

*super secret* NOT KNOWN TO ANYONE AT HOGWARTS, STAFF OR STUDENT, NOR ANYONE ELSE AT ALL ((super secret!!))  Casey is an intersex individual, both male and female. Casey, while referred to as male has not been made completely male. This condition influences many areas of his life but is not known to anyone outside of immediate family: his parents and grandparents.

When Casey was born and his parents realized what he was they were split at first but decided to raise him as a girl for “his” first few years of life, as suggested by Darla. It would further give Martin an excuse to remove himself from the clan for it was figured if one of his siblings had a firstborn son the family name could continue through them. However Martin’s sister Sunanach was sterile and for a time Torna only had his first born daughter and no sons. When Casey was seven the majority of the O’Doherty opinion was enforced again. A previous member with Casey’s intersex condition was rendered male, deemed the better of the sexes, with an amulet enchanted to make the wearer appear fully male without actually changing their physiology. Sadly Martin folded to the pressures of his parents and even began to blame his wife for Casey’s condition. They are now estranged but not yet divorced. Casey was left to have the “girlyness” whipped out of him, forging his must-be-a-man attitude, as his grandparents groomed him as the scion of the O’Doherty clan. From this experience, Casey doesn’t have a healthy view on relationships or appearing weak, despite his low constitution. Growing up as two different genders allowed him to deceptively and successfully cross dress as a girl, giving way for his dormant “Hexy” persona.

Some of Casey’s first bits of magic were making things break without touching them, with increased frequency after the switch of his gender identity from female to male. This pleased his grandparents and Casey was allowed to practice with the family wand, formerly under the ownership of his grandfather Ainbheartach. Casey became adept at minor jinxes and hexes, sharing a deep connection with the wand despite the decades of previous ownership. Even more so than his cousins, Casey is rather spoiled with access to the family wand, a lavish allowance, his own chamber in the family vault, and one of the house-elf servants, Dingy, as his personal assistant. These privileges carry heavy costs, as Casey must develop the power, skill, and reputation to carry the O’Doherty name.

Casey shares a special but strained relationship with his house-elf Dingy. Outwardly, Casey seems to treat Dingy poorly in the way many wizards have for centuries. He is not overly abusive to Dingy, unlike the rest of his family, which keeps Dingy loyal. Casey is not stupid and knows if Dingy is kept under detrimental health he wouldn’t last, so at least a small part of him cares for the elf. Upon reflection, Casey thinks the way in which his family have ordered and forced him to be similar to the manner in which the family house elves are kept. Any benevolent actions or words unto Dingy are masked under insult; least any of Casey’s fellow Slytherins hear he was being soft on the elf.

    AT HOGWARTS

Casey was sorted into Slytherin, although the Hat considered him worthy of Gryffindor to which Casey retorted by forcibly squashing the hat back on the stool after his sorting. He performed above average in most classes, concentrating intensely on spellwork. Casey puts a lot of effort into spellwork, placing high in the wand casting portions of Charms, Transfiguration, and Defense Against the Dark Arts. He managed to enter the Dueling Club early on in the intermediate skill group as a formidable opponent. He sought but was denied moving-up in the ranks since then, held back by unbridled aggressiveness in duels that was often chided.

However at times the exertion in magic proved too much for Casey. He often had to spend nights in the hospital wing if one of his many allergies started up, a nasty hex lingered after a duel, or if he exhausted his energy while tackling magic he was not yet mature for. He deplored pity from the nursing staff, lest the true nature of his biology become apparent.

After being publically humiliated by another student during flying lessons, Casey sought swift revenge. Recalling his ability to “act like a girl” as his family put it, Casey made a simple disguise by removing his amulet and dressing with a nicked girl’s uniform and a red wig. He stalked after the tormentor, acting sickenly sweet and lured him under the pretense of exploring the Trophy Room. Once the couple was alone, the persona eventually called “Hexy” did hex the other boy into oblivion. Casey slipped away and was never suspected when the boy was found an hour later in quite the scene; a jack-o-lanturn over his head, with space for the leeks in his ears, flowers sprouting from his robes and left under a Babbling Curse. While recovering the boy muttered the word “Hexy” but the staff could not figure out what this meant. After a bevy of counter-curses all the boy could remember was a girl and the trophy room but no further details for how the events transpired. To this day “Hexy” remains a special, last resort tool in Casey’s deceptions. She is “placed” a year and house differently than Casey. No connection between “her” and Casey has been found.

The only elective Casey considered for his third year was Care of Magical Creatures, not because he wants to work with creatures (that’s stuff for Dingy to do) but because that class is usually fun and he needed to take an elective. He thinks little of the other courses because they offer no new wandwork, the only bits of magic Casey admires. Casey has twice tried out for the Slytherin quidditch team but has not gotten in, the stress of flying too much for his body to handle during tryouts, the spots filled by better players, although this isn’t to say he doesn’t have competitive spirit and aggression. With Dingy’s assistance, Casey has slowly conditioned himself at longer bouts of flying on a well maintained Comet 470, as the Comet line has the slower acceleration that Casey can handle, but excellent turning.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Many of the members of the O’Doherty clan have been Slytherin and so is Casey. At face value, Casey seems a perfect rendition of the stereotypical Slytherin mold. His family is old and Dark minded. He possesses cunning, deceit, and above all self-preservation. However, despite his abrasiveness from his upbringing, Casey finds the “evil for evil’s sake” philosophy pitiable. In his mind, becoming a Dark Lord will pit you against the rest of the magical community and your death will be at another’s hand. Casey prefers a subtle approach to power. For him, most social interactions are just an “act” and he can play out the psychological bully or the smooth talking backstabber when needed. Unless he develops a sworn enemy, most of Casey’s insult hurling is half hearted, mostly to save face with his fellow Slytherins. He shares no special kinship with his house, considering the House classification to be tiring at times.

At his sorting, the Hat considered him Gryffindor material. Casey has bravery when it comes to facing great opponents or wild challenges. His fears are mostly kept to the covering up of his childhood. He can also mask chivalry when grifting another or playing nice. Ultimately it is Casey’s ambition that places him in Slytherin, along with his comfort of using less than honorable methods to put his plans in motion.

    Writing Sample:

Sum up your character in one paragraph: Casey is the scion of an old, Dark minded family. Although he looks like a weakling he has a great ambition to achieve his own power despite the limitations as presented by his body. If someone was to infuriate Casey enough, or endanger his house-elf, a mysterious girl named "Hexy" may come along to jinx them...

HEXY: Hexy is Casey's female alter ego, a persona held over from his early childhood before his grandparents conditioned him into being a boy. As the namesake would suggest she's dangerous, feisty, and playful like a predator cat. Casey assumes this role in his undercover work during his most secretive of revenges and capers.

Hexy, or Hexmerelda Claggin, is presented as an off year Hufflepuff (currently Third) connected to the mysterious cottage at the edge of Hogsmeade. She values being alone and unnoticed even though she somehow knows a lot about the older students, up until the moments when she decides to let loose.

((OOC: Quinn Shephard, as representing a character alias, is a secondary face claim on the Avtar Registry. That means she is available as a face claim for a primary character if you wish, though you will have to contact myself and a curator for discussion.))

OOC: To better ease the kind of plots that involve Hexy, I have a system that sets a limit for the speculation of who Hexy is and how she may or may not connect to Casey. For some threads it's better to take her identity at face value, others may allow for suspicion. I know this might require a 'selected obliviousness' from other characters to allow this plot to be long arcing, as to not spoil things too soon. I thank you for your participation in advance. For these purposes, the Hexy Levels are meant for characters at Hogwarts who would be conceivably interacting with both (students, professors, staff) on a regular basis. Obviously if your character wouldn't know the going ons of the castle they would have no reason to be suspicious about Hexy's existence. Send a PM to Casey if you have any questions.

~THE CURRENT HEXY LEVEL IS GREEN~

Hexy is an infrequent occurrence. There is no way to connect her with Casey O'Doherty and there is nothing suspicious about her existence. Possible knowledge: "Who is Hexy?" up until someone meets her, that she's only one face in the other year other house crowd.

    BLUE

    Nothing suggests Hexy exists.

    GREEN

    Infrequently about, nothing suspicious.

    YELLOW

More frequent appearances/suspicions encouraged that don't tie to Casey.

    ORANGE

Deeper suspicions that may connect to Casey in some fashion.

    RED

Everyone knows Casey and Hexy are the same person.

    Notes on frequency

At Absit Omen, we keep a wide window of In Character dates that methodically shuffles forward independent of OOC timing of thread creation and posting. Hexy may seem 'frequently about' OOC if half my threads for Casey involve Hexy in a given week, for example. The frequency used for Hexy's appearances is by IC date. Using current examples: While there have been over a dozen specific threads for Hexy, there have only been few dates far apart on the calendar; one summer night, the October Hogsmeade Weekend, the acromantula hunt, Body Swap Day in November and the meeting of the Gwyllion Fae. Thus, infrequent.

I am unlikely to have offstage appearances of Hexy, so her events of activity are always threaded on site, especially when interacting with other characters.

    Notes on Casey's appearance

Play bys are very useful for representing characters, though they may not be 100 percent fits. And then for Casey's circumstances, he appears to have different forms given how his amulet works. Everyday student form everyone knows as Casey (Will Poulter as Play By); girl disguise by 'cross dressing' and lack of amulet (represented by Quinn Shephard); and Casey's natural form undisguised and without the amulet (becoming more important during the missing amulet status/plot).

What does this look like? A blend of male Casey and female Hexy? (and you may note Will and Quinn don't look that much alike) Most important is the face, as the shape of Casey's body can be disguised or altered by various means and people are mostly identified by their faces. Without the amulet, Casey looks the same as how everyone knows him (Will Poulter) with suggested hard to notice softer or feminine characteristics.

The flip-side then: what prevents others from recognizing that Hexy is Casey (aka Will Poulter with a wig)? The key is that Hexy is both a disguise and a performance with hair, clothing, intonation and attitude markedly different from how Casey is known. This and a lack of background and familiarity can do wonders in disguise. The facial features aren't all that different from 'Casey' and when disguised Hexy may not look exactly like Quinn Shephard. Though the OOC magic of different celebrity references helps sell the illusion that Hexy is a different person from Casey. You may be interested to look at the trope of Clark Kenting - how nobody in-universe recognizes that Clark and Superman are the same person.

This may be more complex that what you need on an average post as what is important just may be that Casey looks like Will and Hexy looks like Quinn. But it is intriguing to think about.

"...the biology of gender is far more complicated than XX or XY chromosomes..."
    ~Eric Vilain, M.D.

    "...avoid conflating anatomy with identity..."
~unfortunately, not the reasoning of the O'Doherty elders

    Some terminology:

Sex - specifically biological sex, are differences in anatomy and genetics that define male and female.

Gender - specifically gender identity, are definitions of male and female (better, masculinity and femininity) according to social roles, cues, and conditioning.

Intersex - intermediate or atypical physiological and/or genetic features in human beings, meaning their biological sex cannot be classified as clearly male or female. There are a variety of medical conditions that will result in ambiguous biological sex. On its own, it does not suggest or confirm a conflict of gender identity. People who are intersex may prefer a male or female identity or identify as intersex.

Transgender - the belief of one's gender identity, as they would define themselves, does not match their assigned sex. On its own, it does not suggest or confirm orientation or atypical biological sex

Androgyny - a combination of masculine and feminine characteristics. The term can be applied to many bodies of thought such as physicality, identity, lifestyle and fashion.

Dimorphism - an explanation of something being binary, only one thing or the other. At this definition dimorphic thought conflicts with ambiguity.

What does this mean for Casey?

At its core, the story of Casey is one of finding identity. The identities just happen to be of different genders. Biologically, he is both sexes and is therefore intersex. At this age he has developed to look more feminine but this is masked with the appearance altering amulet and does not mean he is one sex.

If Casey had grown up in another environment, having a consistent identity would have persevered any appearances of looking like a 'boyish girl' or a 'girlish boy'. From being openly raised one way but forced into another, it has a created a conflict of identities and a dislike of who he is, all attitudes taken from the opinions of his family. One ultimate goal of Casey's story, then, is accepting all that he is.

Casey's story is not meant to represent what happens to people who are intersex and should not be taken that way. His is atypical, inaccurate and above all fictional (and magical!). The biological nature of his dual sexes, though undefined, would be an exceedingly rare manifestation of intersex phenomena.

Currently, Casey identifies himself as male. Hexy is the female, the personas markedly different. Being male or female, choosing one identity over the other, uses criteria only of what is best to get the job done in Casey's games of deception.

And overall, this is still a very small piece of the character and personality of Casey O'Doherty, sometimes called Hexy. As a character, I believe he is a descriptively written 'rounded' character that even if the ambiguity of gender was removed he would still be a descriptively written 'rounded' character.

[Marital Status:] Well, his grandparents aren’t going to suggust anyone of muggle blood after what Casey’s father did!

Grandfather – Ainbheartach O’Doherty, the head of the loan sharking business. A loud drunk and nortorius gambler.
Grandmother – Neasa O’Doherty, a very opininated, bossy woman. She’s the kind who would be (and possibly was) chummy with Delores Umbridge.
Father – Martin O’Doherty, once slated to be next in line for the family enterprises. However he couldn’t take the acidiciness of his family and left with his portion of the fortune. He married a muggle woman after a short fling. When Casey was born, the couple was split on what to do, deciding to raise him as a girl. However Martin was loosing money and had yet to find work. Asking for one favor from his parents was all it took to yank him and his family back in. Martin is under his father’s thumb and now works in wizarding law as a defense attorney.
Mother – Darla O’Doherty (nee Higgins), the muggle woman wooed by Martin’s magic. Beautiful but delicate, of increasingly weak health especially after Casey was born. Soon she was bedridden, receiving no healthy care when she and Martin moved to Doherty Manor. The family considers her an embarrassment. If it wasn’t for Casey having Dingy watch her when back at the house she would have passed long ago.
Uncle – Torna O’Doherty, a large, gluttonous man whose rather dim witted.
Aunt – Maeve O’Doherty, Torna’s wife, has become disatisified with him and has several lovers on the side.
Aunt – Suanach O’Doherty, daughter of Ainbheartach and Neasa, to them as forgettable as Darla. Never a good witch, reclusive and a depressive drunk unlike her father.
Cousin – Brona O’Doherty, a gloomy little girl, Torna and Maeve’s daughter.
Cousin – Kennedy O’Doherty, a horrible pug faced boy much like his father Torna.
[Pets:] House Elves are not pets.

    [Faction:] Himself.
[Best Friend:] He doesn’t find anyone at school like this…but arguably this could be Dingy.
[Nemisis:] Mrovin Sharp has made the list.
    [Romance:] Are you kidding me?

    Educational Characteristics

    [Year:] 3rd
[Learning Preference:] Casey vaules one thing in his schooling; the accumilation of magical might. His determination to become a powerful wizard leads him to tackle magic beyond his current grade level, which he finds hardly challenging. His efforts go beyond what is taught in class. For every spell he has been taught by teachers, he has self instructed himself with one or two spells. He is a perfectionist when it comes to his wand casting, built with repetitive regiments of practice. His efforts don’t go unnoticed as Casey is amongst the first to perform a new spell correctly even if he doesn’t have the stamina to sustain it for long. This single devotion to one area of study makes him an average student in his remaining classes. Casey is unimpressed with classes that do not use a wand finding them boring, getting the work done only out of obligation. Scholarly classes are forgettable, any classes that feel like “servant stuff” are annoying. Overall Casey doesn’t care if his grades in those classes are lower.
    [Best Subject(s):] Charms, Transfiguration, Defense
[Worst Subject(s):] he’s an average student but he isn’t enthralled with the rest.
[Learned Skills/Select Expertise:] Managed to summon hand held objects nonverbally, looking to make it instantaineous.
[Clubs/Extra Curriculars:] Duelling Club, practicing to tryout for the house Quidditch team.

    Magical Characteristics

[WAND:] 9 inches, Hornbeam, Leprechaun Hair, Inflexible, a gleaming shaft of unblemished wood; Ages ago Éadaoin O’Doherty, at the time engaged to a cousin, tricked a Leprechaun out of its hair and gold. The hair was used as the core in a specially commissioned wand, the source of the O’Doherty clan’s power and fortunes. However this affluence came with a curse from the wronged Leprechaun, making the members of the O’Doherty family have rotten, vile attitudes. In spite of the decades of previous ownership of the wand, Casey’s determination has synchronized with the wand’s power, aligning with him. It is a mischievous wand, refusing to give the counter-curses to the hexes, jinxes, and curses it casts.
[ERISED:] Casey sees himself as a self made man (complete man) with his family and physical weaknesses out of the picture.
[AMORENTIA:] Heavy cotton, the seaside, burning ash
[BOGGART:] Casey’s boggart his himself but unmistakably female, representing his childhood past with a female identity that he strives to keep hidden after conditioning from his gradparents.
[RIDDIKULUS:] Casey masks his boggart!self under heavy clown/mime makeup and costume, rendering it speechless. Sometime he throws in banana peels.
[DEMENTOR:] Scattered memories from the changeover, a time in his childhood when his grandparents forced a change in identity. The dementor’s effects leave him speechless and nearly catatonic.
[PATRONUS:] When Casey gets around to trying this spell he will be displeased to find that his patronus is just a Siamese cat…
[SPECIAL ABILITY:] Casey has convinced Ignan Storm to give him Occlumency lessons.
[FAVORITE SPELL:] Verdimillious, flashy green lightning always cool in duels and it stings like the dickens. Plus the spell can be altered to highlight things hidden by enchantment.
[MOST USED SPELL:] sheer repetition has gotten his summoning non verbal
[BEST OFFENSIVE SPELL:] Steleus, the Sneeze Hex, is rarely expected and disrupts your oppent.
[BEST DEFENSIVE SPELL:] The best defense is a good offense; Pertrificus Totalus will render them unable to fight back

    The Six Stats
Fans of traditional tabletop RPGs will recognize these characters stats which determine strengths and weaknesses. I do not use actual numerical values but rather use them for characteristic definitions.

[Strength:] Average – Casey is physically weak and while that would place him lower he makes up for it with aggression.
[Dexterity:] Sub Average – Casey is a good dodger on the dueling dais but he can’t keep up running for long.
[Constitution:] Very Low – Casey has a weak immune system and numerous allergies, these medical conditions the only thing keeping his impressive power in check.
[Intelligence:] High – Although it should be noted that Casey limits himself to wand magic but his knowledge of how to cast spells and what they do is impeccable.
[Wisdom "Street Smarts":] High – Casey, through lessons from his grandparents, is familiar with the norms of the pureblood and criminal mindsets. As a natural actor he knows how to take advantage of social circumstances.
[Charisma:] Above Average – When Casey bothers to pay attention and put effort into it he can be silver tongued like any Slytherin, although he tends to view people as obstacles or challenges then other human beings.

    Gear, Possessions, Familiars, Protectorates
The unique items the character has beyond standard (wand, basic school equipment, etc.) and the creatures or people they can call on for help.

[Dingy:] Casey’s personal assistant handling all domestic matters and the secret parts of Casey’s plans. Dingy can also deliver messages unseen by the recipient and brings his master along with Side Along Apparation.
[Amulet:] This trinket is what keeps Casey under a masculine appearance. If he were to remove it his body would take on more feminine traits.
[Hand of Glory:] When the O’Dohertys agreed to help Ventus Shang fund a commission for several Hands of Glory, Casey fudged the order to ensure one for himself. It gives light in the darkness only for the bearer and his companions. Amongst its further powers it can keep the occupents of the trespassed household asleep as long as it’s lit and assist in opening mechanical locks. However, if milk is used to put out the candle all the effects disapate.

    What Ifs

[Where does character see herself in 10 years:] In control of the O’Doherty enterprises and his family kicked out of the manor
[Oddest thing that has ever happened to them:] The most traumatic being the changeover when his family was forced to move into O’Doherty Manor.
[Personal goal not yet achieved:] Wandless summoning (he’s nearly there)
[Biggest Regret Mistake:] Casey does not make mistakes…(yet…)

    Character Name: Casey O'Doherty
    Age: 14
Please provide a link to their Application: link
Do any of your other Characters have Special Abilities?: Yes
If Yes, then Please provide their name and a link to their bio:

    Anadotti Squiggs, Animagus (Flying Squirrel)
    Gerard Gries, Occlumency & Legilimency

    Special Ability: Occlumency
What level is this ability at?: Intermediate
At what age did your character gain this ability?: 14
How did they learn or hone this ability?:

Because of his attitudes towards deception and recent confusion about his sense of identity, Casey has long been interested with the study of Occlumency. After requests to the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Casey has begun sessions of training with Professor Ignan Storm, though he also looks at other avenues to advance his skills. This school year (2009-2010) will chronicle his accelerated growth with the skill.

Casey learns about Legilimency as well in terms of strengthening his Occlumency. However, his current interests are not to train that skill or attack other people's minds as he is only interested in defending his own. Thus his skill with Legilimency would be barely higher than any beginner.

Describe how the Special Ability influences their life.  What do they use it for?:

Because of a childhood where Casey was forced to adapt new personalities because of his family's influence, Casey has developed an innate variation of Occlumency that even he, momentarily, doesn't fully understand. The most used application of his Occlumency skills is a magical element to his alter ego, Hexy. When changing into a different gender identity, the physiological elements covered by Casey's enchanted amulet are aided by the psychological changes from Occlumency, creating slight personality differences between the personas of 'Casey' and 'Hexy' making both feel like real people without showcasing the habits and attitudes of each other.

Beyond this duality, Casey will learn to use the most commonly applied methods of Occlumency to control his emotions and keep his secrets hidden.

Write a description of what happens when your character is exhibiting this Special Ability:

Occlumency serves as an edge to Casey's disguise(s), creating a frame of mind where any observing party and even Casey himself will believe his new role is a separate distinctive person. The other side of his identity is still present, collapsed in the depths of his mind to observe but for the most part will not manifest in Casey's appearance and actions until he chooses, excluding periods of extreme emotions. Probing Casey's mind in this regard will not reveal his thoughts of being the singular source to these seemingly segregated citizens.

Occlumency also aids with Casey interests in other fields of magic relating to the mind, eventually aiding him recognition of circumstances where his mind is threatened with magical manipulation.

This isn't to say that Casey's experiences are not without drawbacks. Prolonged use of Occlumency (whether from impression management or other exercises) leave him with additional chronic ills such as headaches that worsen the more he fights them. In moments of particular self doubt Casey cannot control his emotions as well as he could, his temper and ego tied to achieving success being a hard nuance to wrangle. Even with Occlumency aided acting in his different personas, a particularly jarring or traumatic event could force a shift of personality sooner than Casey would have switched roles, leading to moments mentally awkward and uncomfortable for him from multiple identity overlap.
