April 12| Prove Yourself [Open]

The weather was getting warmer, but that didn't stop the sky from getting as dark as the eyes of a beetle, and thus, Artemis continued to wear her uniform: all black, from head to toe. After all, who had ever heard of someone sneaking around successfully wearing brightly colored robes? If such a person wasn't hidden beneath an invisibility cloak, well then, they'd be discovered rather quickly. Dark clothing helped Artemis act as stealthily as possible. Her slender figure whipped around corners smoothly.  She turned swiftly onto Knockturn Alley, her  usual hangout spot, and was soon passed by a frequent site in old Knockturn: a hooded figure. Who knocked shoulders with her.

Excuse me,” Artemis spat. The silhouette continued walking, and so did Artemis. Once she was turned back around, she smirked to herself. It felt good to be back in this area, where you could be rude to someone for doing something as insignificant as bumping into you – It was protocol here. Artemis had been trapped in her apartment for weeks, avoiding trouble – she'd nearly gotten spotted on the job – and attempting to forget about Killian, who seemed to have disappeared. He had sent her a message a few weeks back informing her of his plans to stay in Ireland, that he wouldn't return, and that she should find herself a new career path. He'd always been wary about her decision to join him in his illicit activities.

Still, it had all come as a shock. Things with him had been going well before his unannounced departure. It was almost as if they were a functioning couple, or at least two compatible friends as opposed to two people who seemed to be arbitrarily paired together and forced to get along, which was how it always had been. They'd been getting along, and then without warning, Killian announced that he was leaving for Ireland and would be back at an undetermined date. It left Artemis wondering what she'd done wrong, although Killian assured her that it was just business.

And it wasn't really easy without him around, either. Having chosen the occupation that she did, it left her with very few friends. It was mostly Killian who had organized their missions, so she never really had to associate with other criminals. It was just her and Killian, and now it was just her. And even though she would never admit it to anyone, she was lonely, and Killian was getting slower and slower to respond to her letters. It was a bit foolish to send him letters, she knew; she wasn't sure what his job was in Ireland, but she assumed it had to be something underhanded, and thus Killian would want to keep himself on the down low and Artemis knew that sending letters would bring attention to him – but she didn't care. She missed him, dammit, and she had questions.

It was all a bit odd, but it's not like they'd had a commitment to each other. They were friends, of course, but he was moving on now. To bigger and better things. But Artemis wasn't going to listen- she didn't need a new profession when this one was suiting her just fine. She brushed a hand through her silky brown hair. She'd just cut it today- it was shorter than it had been in a while; she'd chopped it to her shoulders. It was her post-abandonment look. It still felt peculiar not to feel her hair tickling her arms and her spine.

Artemis wasn't sure what she was doing in Knockturn Alley. She didn't have a job to do and she wasn't having a top secret meeting to discuss a potential job. In fact, she hadn't really been to Knockturn Alley alone too many times. It wasn't as if that scared her at all- she could carry on by herself. If she was going to move on from Killian's random decision to ditch her, she had to start creating some business for herself. She just wasn't very sure how to go about it. There had been some strange happenings in the Wizarding World, though - something about a kidnapping of someone or other - but Artemis rarely paid much attention to the news. However, perhaps it was a sign that someone would need some help of the darker variety.
