Character Birthday & Age: September 20th 1979, 29
City & Country of Birth: London, England
Blood Purity: Halfblood
Alma Mater: Beauxbatons
Job/Position: Lawyer, attached to the Department of International Magical Cooperation
Wand: A hawthorn wand measuring ten and a half inches, with a phoenix feather core. Bought at Ollivander's shop before she left for school. The wand is supple with a spiraled shaft.
Physical Description: Standing on the tall side of five feet and six inches, Petra can look younger for her age especially if she dresses down. Her long black hair is naturally wavy, though she prefers to straighten it with the aid of cosmetic potions. Her long face with her penetrating green eyes is fairly attractive, especially with her pale complexion.
Her work attire is fairly formal; somber colored robes paired with brightly colored shirts, with her hair loose about her face; a mix of muggle and wizarding fashion. Only in her off-time, does she does casually, going for jeans, khaki trousers, and shirts. Dresses and dress-robes, more sophisticated than flashy are saved for a night out on the town.
Personality Description: Privacy does mean everything to Petra, and working in a professional environment, she likes to keep her personal life to herself, not the type to chit-chat endlessly about the weather, family and the state of the wizarding world. Though she would slip from time to time, on quidditch, being an ardent fan of the Montrose Magpies (since she started following the British and Irish League), and the Quiberon Quafflepunchers. While she opens up more to her friends and family, she tends to be secretive when perturbed by something. She dotes on her family, especially her half-siblings, and would be the first one to rush to their rescue if they were in trouble. The same goes for her closest friends.
While affable to some level, and articulate, her focused approach to work could rattle some people. Even though she finds the subject of law to be fascinating, she's shrewd enough to know that it isn't infallible or even without bias. Better a realist than an idealist, otherwise she would hate to be disappointed frequently. While she doesn't fancy herself to be an idealistic legal reformer, she can spot possibilities within, that can be improved upon. She's ambitious though, wanting to make her mark upon the British Ministry.
History: n the beginning, there was Raine Talonen, and Linnet Pendrick, and a chance-meeting in St. Mungos had thrust them together. Not love at first sight, since Linnet was more exasperated than spinning sonnets about the Finnish pureblood wizard. It took a few dates with butterbeers, that changed her mind. With a whirlwind courtship, they had married, five months after they had met, despite strident objection's from the bridge's mother who felt that new son-in-law was worthy of her daughter's hand. The newly weds had rented an apartment. Raine did odd jobs around Diagon Alley during the day, while working on his manuscripts during the night. Until her maternity leave kicked in, Linnet continued to work in St. Mungos as a healer.
Petra Pendrick-Talonen was born six months after they had wed. Maude Pendrick had grudgingly visited, and then quickly left, pleased at the new addition. Raine never sent the news to his own staunch purist family. The Durmstrang alum, had been in the outs with his family; moving out of the home to strike it on his own. Still, the idyllic state of affairs didn't last long, tensions had arisen between Linnet and Raine just a year after Petra's birth. The former was acting more secretive, and moody. Raine suspected something was wrong, but whenever he tried to get to the bottom of it, he would be snubbed.
One night, Linnet didn't make it back. No one knew where she was, neither her colleagues nor her mother. The authorities couldn't locate her. Her husband suspected the worse, the undercurrent of fear that had gripped Britain with the Death Eaters, and their master couldn't be ignored anymore. He left, taking his one-year old daughter with him across the channel to France. Maude Pendrick followed suit, setting up a home with Tildy (her house elf), for her son-in-law and little Petra. Their shared grief had made them closer. While they told stories, and shared photos of Linnet with Petra, they never broached the subject of her disappearance. Maude Pendrick had decided to move back to her home, when Petra turned ten years old.
Petra grew up wanting for nothing. A bright, intuitive and energetic though quiet child, she was always on the move, playing pretend quidditch, and enacting stories with her dolls. Her father had remarried, much to her delight, to a Muggleborn witch named Odette Dubray, who had worked as a model, and operated her own millinery shop. She grew close to her stepmother, and delighting in the birth of her half-siblings, christened Ari and Pia Dubray-Talonen. By this time, her father had some moderate success as an author, publishing a series of children's books geared for wizarding households.
Before being sent to Beauxbatons, she had stayed with her grandmother Maude for two weeks, getting her first wand ("Because Ollivander's is the best, no matter his critics") and her supplies. She graduated in her last year with top marks in Charms, Runes and History of Magic. Gaining an apprenticeship in a wizarding law practice, she worked there for four years before applying to the British Ministry of Magic for a place there.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them: Attached to the International Magical Office of Law, Petra checks regularly checks to see new legal developments in other wizarding ministries. She works with various departments and other ministries, when directed, for consultation for legal cases.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field: Upon her graduation, Petra was placed as an apprentice to Nicholas de Montfort, a French wizarding lawyer of some repute. He ran a wizarding law practice with several partners. At first, the newly graduated student had to run errands, fetch meals, and schedule appointments. As she progressed in her apprenticeship, her responsibilities became more significant. Law statutes were memorized, along with local law practices, and legislation. In her second year, she acted as de Montfort's aide, researching case law, and other plaintiffs as well. In her last two years, with the practice, she had to team up with other apprentices; taking charge of cases that merited minor charges.
After receiving a place in the Department of International Magical Cooperation, British Ministry of Magic, she worked hard to familiarize herself with the British wizarding legislation.
Writing Sample: Behind the silver-wrought frame, the twins waved merrily, as they raced up and down on their brooms. Any other time, the black-haired witch would have let a smile escape, but now, wasn't the time. Outside her office, there was a flurry of activity; the buzzing of voices, clip-clop of feet, scratching of quills, and the shuffling of parchment.
A sharp pain echoed through her head; she tried to clear it away, massaging it with her thumb. A sip of tea--green to be precise--settled her down. Turning the page of a legal tome, she returned back to the list of Class B Tradeable Materials.
A Dutch potioneer was looking to expand his export business past the English Channel. His documentation was flawless--correction, nearly flawless. His inventory needed to be checked though. If he passed, then he'd be a lucky man. Just as long, as he wasn't smuggling runespoors
Donk donk
"Unless the Montrose Magpies have won the League, don't disturb me." Her eyes never left the parchment. Smoothly, she kept on writing, the recommendation on Hubert von Rijin was two sentences short from being complete. The door squeaked open, a roundish freckled face with short blond hair, peeked through the open gateway. "Umm...Ms. Pendrick-Talonen?"
Oldbridge. The squeaky new intern, with a penchant for nervous babble. Narrowed green eyes fixed themselves upon his face, "Any time soon, Oldbrige?" He gulped.
She waited, perfectly still.
"Updatesonthe," he placed the be-ribboned scolls gingerly on her desk, "vonRijinprofile. Thank you!" Like a snitch, he darted out the door.
Sum up your character in one paragraph: The epitome of a professional working witch, who seeks to climb the ranks of the Ministry. Though she labels herself a realist, she's extremely fond of her family, and the few friends that she has got.
