Full Character Name Dreogan M. Eleor Character Birthday & Age: November 23, 1975, aged 35 City & Country of Birth: London, England Pureblood, Halfblood or Muggleborn?: Pureblood Alma Mater: Beit Gaddol, Or Job: Department of International Magical Cooperation, Head of the Muggle Affairs Office Wand: Hawthorn, 10.5”, unicorn hair core, supple. |
Physical Description Dreogan is medium height and a bit too lean, owing no doubt to his mass consumption of caffeine and his failure to remember to eat. While coming from a long line of British purebloods through his mother's side (the Grimms), his father's Mizrahi roots run deep. Dree has dark, curling hair and olive skin, brown eyes, and thick, dark brows. His face is somewhat round but he has a defined jaw and pointed chin, usually covered in a light dusting of hair. His voice is rich, husky, and pleasing to listen to.
Dreogan has four sets of the same robes; he does not bother to dress uniquely, but purchased the robes on the recommendation of his mother, who called them “smart.” He trusts her judgment completely on such matters. He also wears a variety of Muggle wear, favoring an old corduroy blazer. When not at work, he is either wearing his pajamas--Muggle scrubs--or Muggle leisure attire while hiking. He has learned to keep a very nondescript appearance at all times.
Personality Description It is widely acknowledged that Dreogan is a hopeless idealist. Unafraid of challenges, and at times willfully ignorant of obstacles and impediments that reasonable people would consider, he will champion unpopular causes, or even people. Driven by a strong moral obligation and a sense of principle, Dreogan can be, really, quite draconic in his sense of right. It is not uncommon to see Dreogan pulling long hours, going to bed at four in the morning, or waking up at four in the morning, on any given day.
With this dogged adherence to a moral code comes some cost. Always a high-strung person, Dreogan feels obligation in everything, from the homeless man on the corner holding out a cup to as a child, to his responsibility to do well professionally to provide for his family, and to do his family name proud. A particularly intense personality, Dreogan can be driven--sometimes to the end of his sanity. As a child, his mother would give him (usually unannounced) a sleep aid potion to facilitate his sleep and reduce the vividness of his dreams, which due to some ability as a Seer came persistently.
Dreogan also has a proven propensity for getting into—and out of—difficult situations. As a quick thinker, perceptive traveler, constant social observer, and sometimes political participant, Dreogan has found ways to put his vigilance and analytical skills to good use. He's a good man to be in a pinch with. In difficult times, Dreogan is known to act swiftly and with a deliberate precision. However, with good reason, Dreogan has a tendency towards paranoia. He startles easily, and wears a wide assortment of protective runic pendants around his neck, his wrists, and carries a candle with him at all times. Sometimes two, one can never be too prepared.
In his free time, Dreogan is fond of unwinding, reading something other than a newspaper—preferably a biography of a notable historical figure or theoretical works—and drink something other than coffee; he is very fond of hot chocolate and earl grey. He enjoys backpacking and walking and talking to Muggles about the events he has read about in the London Times. He dislikes magic carpets, celery root, over-institutionalization—which he feels leads too easily into corruption—the Patriarchy, and alcohol.
To dispel his perpetual anxiety, Dreogan laughs often and readily with little provocation, generally thought to be an agreeable trait and encouraged by his companions. For the most part, Dreogan is even-tempered, considerate, and compassionate, and zealously protective of those dear to him.
HistoryEarly Life (1975-1990)
Dreogan does not speak of his past, and what little is known is given piecemeal. He was born in London, England as the eldest son to British-Jewish mage and theorist Dreogan Eleor and British witch Hestia Grimm. Both sides of the family were known for deep roots in Old Magic, Dreogan, Sr. being a direct descendant from priest and prophet Melchizedek, Hestia Grimm being one of a long line of necromancers, vampire hunters, druids, and other occultists. Dreogan Jr--called "Dree" by his family--moved to Israel at age 11, when he about to enter school at Beit Gaddol in Jerusalem, which his father believed t, would provide him and his younger brother, Adon, a better and more progressive education than Hogwarts.
At Beit Gaddol, Dreogan selected the priestly tract of studying offered by the house of “Or,” one of the 8 Gaddol houses. Three years alter, Adon would join him, but in the house of Gibbor. In his sixth year, Dreogan receiving eleven C.A.M.L.s (Certified Academic Mage Levels) consisting of seven O (outstanding), three E (exceeds expectations) two A (acceptable).
Father's Abduction and Aftermath (1991-2000)
However, during the summer of his sixth year, Dreogan and his father were touring Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. As they got ready in the morning, a group of men burst into their hotel room, managing to take Dree hostage and demanding his father's compliance. Fearful, but willing, Dreogan Sr left with them and was never heard from again.
His father's disappearance, and what he felt to be his role in it, weighed heavily on him. Over the summer, teachers and friends alike were shocked when, Dreogan chose to leave school in his last year--especially after being selected as Head Boy. Dreogan expressed little hope of returning to finish his degree.
He himself disappeared for some time, corresponding exclusively with family. In this time, Dreogan assisted his mother in her move home to London, who expressed a strong desire to leave the kibbutz that her husband had helped dot found. As years spread on, his brother graduated and found a job in the military in Israel. Dreogan, however, had not found his path. Still feeling responsible for his father's disappearance--or at least feeling that he served as some key in solving the riddle, Dreogan tried--unsuccessfully--to work with the Aurors in Jerusalem to solve his father's open case. When they closed the case, explaining that his father, as a radical thinker, got more or less what he deserved, Dree attempted himself to chase down leads and search for the group responsible for abducting--and in all likelihood, killing--his father.
At about age 19, Dreogan moved down to Egypt--following a false lead, and also hoping to escape the obligation to serve in Israel's military. However, he set up a nomadic life there. On top of recreational visits to the pyramids and other prominent magical sites, Dreogan set up shop as a Seer, filling his time with helping old women find their lost sons--or cats--and help young men divine their future. He also acquired his familiar, Tabitha -- an Egyptian Mau mix -- one night while in Egypt, and has been unable to shake the feline's companionship ever since.
When Egypt grew tiresome and fruitless, Dreogan returned to the home he'd known with his father: the kibbutz he'd established in the Negev desert. To the world--not only Muggles--the kibbutz appeared to be a date farming community. The exact function of this kibbutz remains unknown to most of the world, but his father, Dreogan Eleor, Sr had been involved in controversial magical experimentation including and focussing upon infusing objects with spells to be released by non-magic bearers at a later time when activated. To this day, a variety of organisations--not all limited to the Near East--have expressed interest in the small community and its secrets. It is likely that Dreogan's primary role at this time was as head over security for in this time, his defensive spells gained substantial complexity and strength. It is suspected he was partially responsible for the disguise of the kibbutz and the major protective wards. There were a variety of skirmishes and abductions at this time, and eventually the Ministry in Jerusalem stepped in, ending the kibbutz with a resounding finality.
Once again rootless, Dreogan left the kibbutz to travel more broadly, outside of Israel. His travels became pointed. During his time in Turkey, he was taken in by a group called Topuluk: translated as only "the Group." Run by a man named Godze, it wasn't long before Dreogan learned that they stole magical goods for profit. Disturbed by their violence, Dreogan also felt the need to stay on. He felt that this group was significant to his father's disappearance. By the time that he was able to determine that Topuluk was not only responsible for his father's disappearance but also interested in
his abilities as Seer, Dreogan was in dire straits. By luck alone, Dreogan was able to break free of the group he'd joined.
Life at Laevenstrome (2001-2006)
Not willing to tempt fate, Dreogan left that part of the world entirely, moving to Los Angeles--where some distant cousins lived. After reaching out to his professors at Beit Gaddol, he was able to nominally fulfill the requirements for his degree. Through Laevenstrome's Fundunct of Sorcery in Lake Elsinore, California, Dreogan was allowed to completing his degree from Beit Gaddol remotely and securing letters of recommendation. Dreogan enrolled for high-level, post graduate work at Laevenstrome. After a year of intensive study, he completed his focused program on Muggle Affairs and stayed on as an adjunct professor of Muggle-Mage Relations, the topic of his graduate thesis.
The summer after his second year of teaching at Laevenstrome, he and a student research assistant, Eldywn Penn, traveled to Israel for research. Eldwyn had put together a particularly interesting prospectus, which had renewed Dree's interest in the area. After two years of self-described cowardice, he agreed to take his teaching assistant upon the understanding that the visit would be brief--only as long as was needed to research a chapter in his book manuscript. Towards the end of their two weeks, Dreogan and Eldwynn were attacked by Topuluk, who had jumped at the first opportunity to reconnect with Dree. While Adon was able to help his brother and prevent facing a similar fate to their father, in the fight that ensued, Eldwyn was killed in wizard crossfire, Adon himself received serious burn injuries to his face, and Dreogan--in shame--never returned to Laevenstrome.
On top of the guilt of his father's and Eldywnn's death at the hands of Topuluk came a third: Dreogan was beginning to have recurring night visions. The prophetic dreams ran the same each time: Adon was leading a wounded and tired Dreogan through the streets of Jerusalem once more--this time, meeting a bloody death at the hands of Tiresias Katsaros, a member of the Group. He did not tell his brother of these dreams until much later.
Life in London (2006-present)
Dreogan moved back to London officially and began work in a position in the Ministry of Magic, Department of International Magical Cooperation. There, he lead the Near Eastern division and particularly hoped to encourage more study on international relations and muggle-mage relations at Hogwarts to prepare more aspiring mages for what he saw as a difficult diplomatic future.
After meeting Jacoba Schlagenweit, a Muggle struggling to connect with her wizard brother, Dreogan found a particular need for Muggle outreach services within the Ministry--services that Magical Catasrophes and Muggleworthy Excuses could not provide. Rather focusing on Muggles as a foreign entity, he devised and created a small unit within the International Magical Cooperation
Department. The division is small, and has only begun to establish itself.
At around this time, Dreogan met and began courting Ministry librarian Akiva Katz, a Muggleborn, Jewish witch. When Akiva was abducted by a Muggle-hating terrorist organization, Dreogan became sure of the event of his feelings, and the couple shorty were engaged, then wed. Shortly thereafter, their first son, Gabriel was born.
Unfortunately, only a couple of months later, Dreogan's troubled past with Topuluk caught up with him once more. After months of tension, and several encounters with Katsaros, Dreogan was abducted just outside of his own home. He has now been gone for eight months.
Writing Sample It had been a hell of a day. And Dreogan wasn’t even sure he believed in hell. Negotiations had been difficult. Jordanian mage and dignitary Salwa Bernier, over transnational trade seemed adamant in her demands to the point of, well, biting him. He looked down at his hand and gave a slightly bitter laugh.
And
he had not been the one to call her mad. That had been British wizard Jude Cookes, who had laid the initial claim against her, accusing her of smuggling.
Dreogan had only been the one within reach when the insult had been thrown. It appeared, in his mind, that Ms. Bernier had been driven mad through torture and now was unreasonable to work with. She had not been this way two years ago when they first met and there was a lingering madness in her eyes that bespoke a mental and physical pain. Thus far, no one but she had mentioned anything about compulsion and Dreogan was beginning to suspect a deeper, tangled intrigue in this. His letters back to London would need to be careful and discrete. The fault lay not in her, though should a trial arise, she most certainly would be found culpable.
Dreogan sat down at his brother’s desk in his shabby flat in West Jerusalem and checked the clock. Adon wouldn’t be home for another two hours. One advantage to traveling to the Near East was that it still felt like home after all these years. He smiled as he looked about his brother’s messy flat. He’d tidy up once he finished this letter.
Leaning forward, he began to dictate to his quill. But the words would not come out right. He would start again. And again. Ultimately, the quill ceased writing altogether, as though waiting for Dreogan to compose his thoughts and save them both the trouble and ink. Frowning, Dreogan leaned forward and took the obstinate quill in hand, dipping it into the ink manually and began to write with little more success but with rather more ink and parchment which began to litter the small desk.
As the door was kicked open, Dreogan jumped to his feet, pulling out his wand, upsetting the spindly chair he sat on. It was dark, he realized now, and he couldn’t see the large figure bustling through.
“Hey,” came Adon’s voice and Dreogan slumped back down into his chair with a sigh as Adon brushed past with bags of groceries. He paused when he saw his elder brother’s haggard appearance. “
woooah. . . heeey.”
“Yes, yes, I know,” Dreogan said with a light laugh, knowing a jab or taunt was formulating in his brother’s mind. “Long day.”
Adon's response was rapid, empathic, and automatic. “Obviously. You look like shit!” Dreogan heard his brother moved the bags of food over into the small, economic kitchen. If his work brought him to Jerusalem enough, perhaps he would convince Adon to upgrade from his efficiency--Dreogan was tired of futons--and move in with him. "Well, let me hear it, then," his brother said, rustling through the bags.
Dreogan still hadn’t turned around to look at Adon. That was always the hardest thing to do these days. The scars on his younger brother’s face—ones that he was responsible for—made his stomach turn. He would have been a proper ladies’ man, quite handsome, if it hadn’t happened, Dreogan realized. And now, here he was, living alone at an entry-level position eight years after graduation.
Steeled with his resolution, Dreogan with an easy smile turned to look at his brother. “Look,” he said, holding up his hand to show the bite marks which he hadn’t yet tried his hand at healing.
“Are those
bite marks. Mol
och," Adon hissed, looking at him suspiciously and hung back a bit, keeping the kitchen table between them. Dreogan suspected with a smirk that his brother wondered what, exactly, he had been bitten by.
“Listen, brother, for once I have a lady-story that will trump even your whole relationship with Raizel Cohen.”
Adon pulled up a chair from the kitchen table and folded his arms across his chest. “Huh. Prove it.”
Sum up your character in one paragraph: An idealist who has seen much of the world, Dreogan is a person who, after experience, vigilant observation, and contemplation, knows what must be done. He does all he can in his power to see that it is done. Aside from his professional obligations, he would like to think himself equally earnest and honest in his dealings with his fellow men. His family is his first priority; Dreogan never lets his perspective waver from this most crucial point, though he is guarded in entering into other relationships.
