Is this a Primary or Secondary Character?: Primary
Full Character Name: Emily Nadine Flickwick
Character Birthday & Age: January 9th, 1991 (18)
City & Country of Birth: London, England
Pureblood, Halfblood or Muggleborn: Halfblood
House & Year: Ravenclaw, 7th
Wand: 11 inches, spiral shafted and inflexible birch wand with a phoenix feather core. Excellent for defensive magic.
Physical Description: On the shorter side and compact in most of her features, she's only about 5'4". Still ever so slightly taller then the other Flickwick girls, but not by much. With the remnants of her Mediterranean heritage flowing through out. Emmy's biological maternal grandmother is Greek, Emmy looks the most like her. Olive toned skin which would be perfect except for a smattering of scars on her left fore arm from fireworks accident as a child. Dark brown, wavy hair which tends to become uncontrollable if not properly maintained. Emmy likes to keep it past shoulder length and layered. For practicality, Emmy will pull her hair back into a ponytail or bun to keep it out of her eyes when reading or studying. Her brown eyes and hints of colors and depending on what she wears can look almost hazel and she has to wear reading glasses.
Emmy's favored style of dress comes packaged with a good many tunic styles and leggings. While she and Ruby weren't raised wearing the same outfits, some style sharing has occurred. Emily prefers more fitted items and it is mostly feminine and she has a small love for aquired assesories. She does go through phases of coloring choices. This reflects the seasons i.e. in the fall she tends to wear more browns and reds, in the winter blacks and grays, in the spring she'll pick up more floral tones. In the summer she's always dressed in vibrant colors.
Personality Description: Emily has always been more quiet then her siblings. Not for being shy, or even altogether stuck up even. She simply prefers cerebral pursuits over the company of others. More often then not she can be found with her nose stuck in a book, or some sort of puzzle to occupy her time. If her brain is not in motion, then she tends to become bored easily with her surroundings. Despite all this intellectual pursuit, Emily is very aware of the things that go on around her.
Emily does aim to make a name for herself and most of what she does has to do with maximising not only her potential, but others as well. Of course, she doesn't have Ruby's maternal instincts, so it helping sounds more like complaints. This tends to make her appear more snobbish then she actually is. It doesn't help that not everyone understands or is fond of Emily's dry sense of humor. She tends to come off as harsh or jaded about most things and is particularly fond of teasing Sophie in a way the younger girl doesn't quite get until much later. Not that she doesn't love her younger sister, quite the opposite.
History: Who knows what would have happened to Emily if it weren't for Ramona and Duncan Flickwick. While Emily has never been treated as an accident, the facts remain as such. Her biological parents Alphonzo and Gracie were much too young to be put in the position of raising their baby and luckily her biological father's older sister came to the rescue. With one child already to their name and believing themselves to be incapable of having anymore, it was an interesting turn about when Ramona turned up pregnant with Ruby as well.
A few months after welcoming Ruby into their home, Gracie gave birth to Emily and the rest, as they say, is history. From the start Ruby and Emily were treated as twins and developed a close bond through out childhood. It didn't take long to notice that Emily preferred quieter pursuits and was often left to her own devices for it. This became even more poignant after the birth of the youngest Flickwick, Sophie. Where Ruby stepped up to play the big sister role to it's fullest potential, Emily did not quite have the same aptitude. Not that she didn't fully adore her baby sister, just in that, it became apparent she didn't quite have Ruby's patience for the girl's reckless behavior.
While it might be easy to get lost in the shuffle of a big family like the Flickwick's, Emily's grades did tend to make her stand out. Especially after John's laziness and problem causing. Keenly intelligent and analytical in nature, there are very few things that Emily has pursued and not achieved. It was of little surprise for anyone to find her sorted in Ravenclaw house. For the most part, Ramona seemed to be hands off with Emmy. Emmy appeared to have it all together, and didn't need as much guidance or pushing as the others. For this, Emmy never became as close with Ramona as she did with Duncan.
While attending Hogwarts, Emily never lacked for grades or attention because of them. She particularly excels in Ancient Runes, History of Magic, and Defense Against the Dark Arts. She doesn't have quite the passion for DADA, but one cannot deny what they have a natural gift for either. As Emily isn't the most outwardly friendly person, she doesn't have a large crowd of friends. She is more likely to keep a select few people around her and while she's had crushes and the like, she hasn't had what she considers a serious romance yet either.
In the last year, Emily has become more detached from the family then ever before. Where all three girls are bonded over their involvement in S.A.W.S., Emily is not as involved as her sisters. She is sympathetic, but not the crusader. This might have something to do with being aware of 7th year being the final chapter and her way of looking towards the future. She was never going to follow in Ramona's foot steps to the ministry, nor does she have the musical capability to do anything with Duncan.
Independence might have to wait though, since Ruby seems on the verge of cracking herself and with Ramona's death... someone's got to be looking after Sophie. Now Emily just has to mind not throttling the younger girl before the storm is finally over.
How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Emily might as well been born with a book in her hand with a puzzle not far behind. Vastly intelligent with perhaps a jaded, but relatively awareness of life, Emmy just makes for a classic Ravenclaw. She doesn't have overt bravery, or willful cunning, nor is she one to work excessively to please anyone. She does however use her intelligence to her advantage in both her ideas for what she wants to do with her life and making sarcastic commentary.
Writing Sample: Emily long since grown accustomed to her table mates talking around her. Well, anyone talking around her, really. It never been hard to appear zoned out, while keeping an ear open for anything important. It generally kept too much unnecessary babble sent in her direction. If one appeared absorbed in their task, one was generally left to do as much.
The topic of discussion today? Boys. What was it about Valentine's Day season make otherwise grounded and practical girls completely mental? One might argue that Emily never been in love to fully understand the mechanics of such a downfall, and one would be correct in that assumption. The fact remained, however, that the conversation bored her too much to even pretend participation.
"What about that boy, Emmy?"
"What about what boy, Michelle," Emily asked, not bothering to look up from her page.
"The one in Charms, Andrew? He keeps looking over here at you," Michelle giggled, the sound bouncing annoyingly off her ear drums.
Without bothering to confirm whether Andrew been in fact looking this way or not, Emily rolled her eyes at the thought. "So?" A turn of the page might as well been a dismissal of the conversation, in her opinion. Michelle did not take this for what it was, and Emily was starting to regret having responded at all.
"So, I think he fancies you! He's so cute, if you don't go after him, I will."
"Oh, then I hereby lift my claim," the touches of sarcasm could not be entirely erased. "I'm going to finish this chapter, yeah? Then you can have my full undivided attention on how you're going to woo Andrew and what not."
Sum up your character in one paragraph: Exceptionally intelligent and studious is a good place to start. Analytical and logical, Emily is sharply perceptive as well. While she appears uninterested in most comings and goings around her, there is little she misses. She tends to keep most opinions to herself until she is sure of an answer, even then, what she's likely to say is bound to be tainted by her cynical nature. While Emily has never been made to feel anything less then a Flickwick, she does tend to stray away from her siblings more and more as the years have gone on. All that might be changing in the wake of her adoptive mother's death however.
