    JOB DESCRIPTION //
Colin is a researcher for the Department of Mysteries, specializing in death. He studies the physical changes to the body after death and how magic effects these - as well as the creation of ghosts. He also studies the creation of inferi and some of the magics that require death (though Horcruxes are unlikely, given their...reputation).

    PHYSICAL
Colin is of moderate height, standing at 6’1, and his reddish brown hair he purposely wears short. His general appearance can be quickly described as ‘stylishly nerdy’; he wouldn’t look out of place in a café typing away at a laptop.

He’s a good-looking man, quick to grow a 5 o’clock  shadow, with full lips, a slightly long face and dark brown eyes. His short, clipped hair varies from brown to an almost red color, depending on how much sun he’s gotten. He has a thick chin and a strong jaw, a tendency to purse his lips, and a slightly off-kilter nose with a bulbous end. His hair is frequently cut, and so rarely seems to be growing out; he wears it in a messy fashion, often gelled.

His shoulders are broad, and his waist narrow, giving his triangular look. He keeps himself in shape, and so has a muscular body, and eats well - sometimes too well. He’s hardly underweight, and during the rainy seasons can wind up with a noticeable layer of fat due to a tendency to snack while he thinks.

He wears black-rimmed glasses most of the time, but can walk around without them without much issue – just don’t ask him to read anything.  His clothing is usually practical but self-aware, and he usually sticks to muggle fashion. He’s fond of hats and hoods when it’s raining.
Colin’s usual expression is an eager one; he often has much on his mind and it shows on his face. When he’s right about something, he has an intolerably smug grin – one that’s earned him more than one good wallop.

At work he wears wizard's robes of a modern style, short-sleeved or with the sleeves pinned up to keep them out of his way. He can often be found walking the halls with a stained apron on, though he's mum on the origin of the stains, which are often distressing colors.
    PERSONALITY

Colin is a clever man – selectively. His mind is constantly working; he’s likely to jump up in the middle of the night and pace his flat, write on the walls if he can’t find paper, and leave walls, tables, and sometimes himself coated in sticky notes. He loves problem solving, loves to solve logic puzzles. He’s a ‘mystery nut’, one could say – if he’d had friends of a like mind in school he’d have happily become a PI, though he might have been very bad at it. His primary interests in life fall to death; he loves reading and watching crime dramas and slasher flicks, and has had a keen interest in the paranormal since his childhood.

He loves to see new ways people kill each other, and is in no way squeamish – he views a corpse as a puzzle, a story to be decoded and put together and a book of clues. He’s often been accused of having little sympathy for the people he studies, and this is somewhat true - his interest in their deaths can often make him ignore the pain or trauma such a death would have had on a ‘real’ person. Still, he loves his work and will happily dash off in the middle of the night if he's called on. He enjoys working with ghosts in particular, since they often are the only people as interested in death as he is.

He saw ghosts as a child - originally he might have become a paranormal investigator had he not learned the truth when he got his Hogwarts letter. Still, he has a fascination with death and death magic, how the body changes afterwards - how magic can prevent such changes or excellerate them - and the magic that's involved in ghosts. His fascination with what magic does to bodies causes him to experiment as much as possible, and to his frustration he's not always allowed to get bodies for his own work.
Still, he’s good at his job – he’s well trained and values accuracy, and his enthusiasm causes him to delves into the subject with more relish than many of his co-workers. Colin is sadly aware he’s a smart man, and so often finds himself annoyed at those around him for not being as smart as he is. He’s proud of his smarts and can be insufferably smug when proved right. That said, nothing gets him going like being wrong.

As the month shifts towards the full moon, he gets considerably more irritable and, in the days leading up to the full moon, can get extremely excited and take leave of his common sense. His accuracy often slips during these days, if something interesting comes up – he sees murder in many corpses, starts getting too fantastical in his theories, and often has to go have a nap and a stiff drink to calm himself down. He can also conduct some very bizarre experiments during this time, so he's much less likely to get his way during his 'time'.

He's aware this happens, though not often when it's actually happening, and finds it very frustrating. He finds his affliction very embarrassing and is quite sensitive about it, and so it’s not a subject anyone but his closest friends can joke about.

Colin is very social, but his rather macbabe interests, over energetic personality and smugness make him few friends, as many people find him creepy. This doesn't stop him from trying; however, he has little interest in romantic or family life, since that'd take time away from his job.

He’s late to bed and an early riser, but seems to function on low amounts of sleep – just expect him to nap a bit around lunchtime. He enjoys jogging early in the morning  and frequently leave the apartment a bit of a mess, and if he needs a nap has no issue sleeping in his rooms at the DoM. He's been found using a corpse as a pillow multiple times.

    HISTORY
Born to a muggle family of modest money, Colin grew up in comfort, but not excess. The only child, his mother Mary was a stay-at-home housewife, and his father Darcy was a Greengrocer. They had a small home, kept strictly clean and neat by his mother. His father assumed Colin would grow up and inherit the shop, but it became clear from an early age that Colin had no such intentions.

As a child he had an accurate interest in the paranormal, claiming their house was haunted. It actually was – by the ghost of a 17 year old girl named Polly, with whom he was somewhat of a friend – however, since she haunted their bathroom, the two never really got too comfortable talking, especially when he was home for the summer during his 6th year. Neither of his parents could see Polly, and this frustrated Colin to no end since it was so obvious she was there. With his cleverness, he did well in school – very well – and so his parents fully expected him to be able to attend university.

They didn’t expect the Hogwarts letter, however. After a very perplexed pair of parents (who now believed him about Polly, much to the ghost-girl’s annoyance) sent him off to school, Colin spent the first year of school with a new experience: not being the smartest person in class. Still, he studied hard and by 3rd year was back to being very high in his class.
His sorting into Ravenclaw was an obvious choice, given his mental capacity and drive. He fit in relatively well – even if most of his classmates found his smart-alec nature a little insufferable, and others found his boundless energy exhausting. He made a few friends, with whom he has largely lost contact now - many of his classmates found his interests odd (to say the least.) He took particular interest in DADA and was very interested in Professor Bins, though he wasn't that interested in HoM.

He excelled in Herbology, Potions, Charms and DADA and did well in his other subjects. He received his NEWTs in Potions, Herbology, Charms, DADA, Arithmancy and  Ancient Runes.

School in the 90s was…interesting. He counts his lucky stars he graduated when he did – as a muggleborn, he took up the initiative to run the heck away from the wizard world as soon as he graduated, returning to the muggle world.

Lost on what to do, and finding it difficult to study ghosts with how hostile the wizard world seemed to be, he took up small jobs and joined muggle paranormal groups, waiting for his chance to return.

After the fall of Voldemort, he returned and began to look for a job; eventually, he came to the Ministry and applied for the Department of Mysteries as a trainee Unspeakable, happily joining the Death researchers. The few other employees in his department found his interest and experiments odd; the bodies of the recently dead often garner his attention. This lead to him making them last as long as possible - and leads to his work area being quite nightmarish. His love of zombies and his private...experiments...only cemented his reputation.

In 2006 his life took a drastic turn, however - he was bitten by a werewolf.

As he views it, his misfortune was doubled by the fact the young lady who bit him – and he refuses to elaborate on how she was able to casually bite his chest – was in the middle of transforming at the time. He barely escaped with his life and his stomach and thighs still bare a few scars.

She infected him, however, and thus he has had to deal with a severe limitation ever since. He's very careful to contain his affliction - taking 3 days off every full moon to recover before returning to work. He's registered.

After his infection, he decided to take two years off of his work, much to his frustration; while the rational part of him knew he had to get his life sorted out, he was annoyed to find his research all but halted. Still, he took the break voluntarily,  as he took out loans and relocated and remodeled his home. During this time he bought himself a motorcycle to make himself feel better and studied, conducting his own experiments.

His parents are moderately happy with his life’s choices - not knowing any real details on his work - and he can support them if need be on his salary (in reality, they're just happy he didn't turn out to be a crazy murderer). He returned to work in 2008.
