The letter itself is neatly typed with a typewriter; the signature at the the bottom is smeared slightly by what appears to be a smudge of coffee. Included in the envelope is a thick ream of papers, some of which is the homework Sasha had previously mailed.

March 8th

Dear Mr. Schlagenweit,

I hope this letter finds you well - enclosed is both the next round of homework from my class, and the graded work Professor Storm dropped off on the 28th. As you can see from your grades and my notes, you're doing quite well - I hope your studies aren't too hectic.

With the OWLs coming up, you'll need to keep up your star charting enough that you feel confident on the practical aspects of the exam. Since your charts will obviously be different from your classmates, and you will have some difficulty doing this aspect of your studies due to light pollution near your residence, I will therefore judge your work based on your technical abilities. I will trust you to note if light pollution was an issue on the chart.

Schoolwork aside, I do hope you're doing alright. Under your circumstances your dedication to your schoolwork is admirable, and I hope you don't find it odd for me to admit that in your shoes I would not be capable of the same. Do make sure to take some time off and socialize, and let me know if you need my help with anything. I can't say I agree you should have been removed from the school, and have to admit to feeling somewhat responsible for your situation.

Ignan says your tutoring is going well. Do try to make sure his hand stays on - and don't be too afraid to stand up to him. He's not got such a big broom up his arse as he likes to act - I daresay he can even be somewhat of a softy, in the right circumstances.

On a slightly odd, but perhaps happier note: one of the first years, a boy named Pax Wintergreen, is trying to start a social club for the Dungeons and Dragons role playing game. I'm aware you run the MAC - I don't know if you've heard of the game, but if you were interested, or could offer him any support, I'm sure he would appricate it.

P.S.: Don't let Ignan know what I wrote about him  being soft, he may kill me.

The return letter was, quite clearly, written on a computer and printed - though the font is a typewriter-style font: Sasha's attempt at a joke.  It is, however, smudge-free.  Included is homework that was completed between the 28th and the 10th for a variety of classes.

10th March, 2009

Professor Trishna,

Thank you, sir, for the well wishes and passing on the assignments.  I appreciate both your concern and your efforts - it does help me feel a little less disconnected from Hogwarts.

My studies are, overall, proving manageable.  The practical side of magic - the wandwork - has always been my weakness and, unfortunately, it's also the aspect that's hardest to pursue outside of school.  The decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery prevents me from practicing unless I'm under the direct supervision of a tutor so my abilities to progress independently there are somewhat limited.  I already have a lot to catch up on after using a wand that had never chosen me for the first four years of my magical education so I suspect I'll be doing a lot of practice in May.  The wandwork aside, I've actually been finding it easier to catch up while working on my own.

I'm surprised to hear Professor Storm thought I did well.  It seemed I spent more time dusting sand and rubber off of me than completing the exercise.  I know my past track record in his class has been less than ideal - and not representative of my usual conduct.  I am hoping to redeem myself, though.  It's encouraging to hear he wasn't too horribly disappointed.

Parring down on my muggle subjects has helped considerably.  Since I no longer have to give the perception that I attend a muggle school (I don't know if you're aware of those circumstances), I've opted to put studying muggle history, literature and French on hold for the time being.  With some help, I've managed to enroll in both a muggle calculus and chemistry class.  Neither have been easy and I've had to play some catch up but not to the extent I was fearing.  Chemistry labs, however, are proving problematic.  I'm suspecting magic influences reactions - especially these that are at such a basic level - in some way.  I've gotten some results that are rather difficult to explain in laboratory reports.  My only saving grace in these situations is that the Professor is equally stumped.

I will give the star chart my best effort.  My old home did get considerably less light pollution than Dreogan's house but I haven't actually managed to convince myself to go out there, yet.  It's probably foolish, I know.  Dreogan has asked that I don't go there alone, as well.  But, I'll see what I can do.

I, again, appreciate your words of encouragement.  To be honest, school work is a reliable distraction. I'm not really sure what I'd be doing with myself if I did not continue to pursue it.  This year has been trying enough as it is - I'd hate to add failing OWLs to the list of other failures.  Leaving school in itself felt enough like one though, in hindsight, I think I was lucky not to be expelled.  I made a rather unfortunate mistake at the end of last year and that put me at odds with the Headmistress.  My parents always taught me it never benefited anyone to complain when it was in their power to make the best of a situation.  I never spent a lot of time in London so I don't have a lot of social connections but I am spending time with the other riders on my junior polo team and am meeting people through my internship at the Ministry.  I've never really been a social butterfly as my lack of popularity is probably a testament to.

Pax Wintergreen is starting a D&D game?  Who's DMing?  I do hope it's still up and going when I return to school - I would love to join, help out or participate in anyway.  I'd also love to help.  I'll have to dust off Ohdin, my Paladin.  He was level five before, well, I got accepted to Hogwarts.  I used to play with a couple kids at Ethelburga - one of the older students started DMing a game and recruited some of us younger boys.

How are things at Hogwarts?  How are the other fifth years?  Are things quieting down?

Mr. Schlagenweit,

Only doing my job! :) Homework received - will send you the graded papers soon.

When in doubt, perhaps you can hire a tutor to supervise you as you work? I know Professor Storm's got some connections within the Ministry who could find you one, if you'd like me to ask him. Would be better than trying to rush it in May, I think, you lessons with Prof. Storm aside. And I'm pretty sure Ignan isn't having you practice putting legs on teacup or turning goblets into rats. I'm sure Johann wouldn't mind some extra cash - he certainly doesn't seem to eat much. (If you do get him, try not to let his cleverness get to you. He means well.)

There's a new Transfiguration Professor, by the way - I wasn't sure if you knew. Arsinoe Hallet - make sure to write to her if you haven't already. She's pretty strict, I hear, so being diligent and making a good first impression might be key.

I hope your internship is going well! And I hope it's not too dull - or too interesting, depending on how you view it and I'm glad to hear you're taking some Muggle courses! I struggled with them myself, but having to go to the university level straight away does that, I suppose (don't try that if you can avoid it, by the way) I haven't heard of that issue with Chemistry - do you have your wand with you? Maybe that has something to do with it?

I understand with needing a distraction, but I'm glad you're socializing. The other 5th years are doing fine, as far as I can tell. They're actually quite calm - Callum Knight has been downright polite. The school's been...well, the school. Lots of student drama we aren't privy to, but it seems alright. You probably know more about it than I do via your friends.

As for D&D - glad to hear you play! Currently, I'm DMing as the students learn the game. I'd love to have you participate, when you return. So far it's mostly 1st years, but hopefully some of the other years will come to check it out during the taster session.

You play a paladin? Haha. We might have to make sure there aren't any undead in the campaign, I think Wintergreen plays a paladin too...

I'm rambling - my apologies. I'm also very jealous you've access to a computer. You've no idea how crazy I'm going without mine.
