Physical Description: Eyes: Hazel eyes that appear to change color with her mood, although they usually appear brown normally. At times of extreme anger, her eyes darken almost to black. On the other hand, at time of extreme happiness, which only happens rarely, her eyes lighten almost to a blue-green color.
    Hair: Long and brown

General She actually appears to be quite innocent in looks, a fact she often uses to her advantage. She looks dainty as well, being petite, at 4'9". Don't let that fool anyone though.
Dressing Style: No one style, she wears whatever she’s in the mood for. Strangely enough, she prefers muggle clothing, because she finds it more comfortable and easier to move around in. As far as she’s concerned, clothing, and now knives, are the only things muggles are good for making.

Personality Description: General Character Traits: A very loyal friend, unless she's stabbed in the back. If this happens, it's very hard to regain her trust.
If she feels betrayed, she will often go into ice princess-mode until she makes a decision about that person.
If someone isn't a friend, they don't seem to be worth her time. This is her defense mechanism. She learned the hard way to be very careful of who to trust. It is hard to gain her trust and get past her barriers.
She can appear quite cold and uncaring, unless around someone she trusts and feels close to.
She sees emotions, as a whole, as weakness and does her best not to show them. She will smile, laugh, and get angry, but these are only surface things. They leave no clue to how she actually feels.
She can be a troublemaker, often stirring things up to sit back watch others’ reactions. She doesn’t care about getting caught, and proudly takes any punishment given to her.
She also hates being controlled, and wishes she was in control of her own life.
To sum it up, she has many masks, none of which fully show how she feels.

She tends to speak formally when angry.
She loves to tease her friends.
She’s very sarcastic and has been called cynical, but prefers realistic.

Can hide any pain felt once she knows how bad it is.
Accepts the consequences of her actions, no matter what they may be.

Weaknesses: Keeps her heavier and more serious emotions inside, so may often snap or lash out.
    She’s very impatient.
Often sees herself alone in the world.
Has a low self-esteem, but hides it well.
She tends to jump into things with both feet.
    She has a quick temper.

History: Parents: Biological Parents, Lorcan and Jaycee Elison. Adoptive parents, Yulkivotch and Nicolet Kantal.

Siblings: Adoptive sister, Haley Kantal. Adoptive brother, Christian Kantal.

Background Story: Amber grew up with very disinterested parents, to the point that she'd never seen them until she was three. As both were younger siblings, they had no need for a familial heir and had never planned one having a child. Amber was an unpleasant surprise for them. They promptly handed her over to the house elf Mimsey and seemed to forget about her.

She had a grandmother who loved her, until the older woman died when Amber was eight years old. The most she remembered about her grandmother was that the older woman paid attention to her, reading and playing, when she visited. She has no memory of her grandmother's death, only knowing that she was with her grandmother when it happened. After her grandmother died, she could always be seen playing with a locket the older woman had given her.

The raising of Amber was left to her beloved house elf Mimsey. Amber didn't even realize she was a human girl until she was six and horrified her parents by acting like a house elf at the one and only family dinner she'd ever attended in her own home. This was the start of a train of human nannies. The nannies never lasted more than a few months, in an effort to keep Amber from getting attached to them.

Amber attended Hogwarts, at age eleven, as was family tradition. Being shy and quiet, she spent most of that time as a loner. But maybe it's time to break out of that mold.

Sadly, Mimsey was dispatched by her parents shortly after her first year ended. She'd gotten depressed over the death of her first and best friend, who came back as a ghost. Her parents didn't understand and decided to give her a real reason to be depressed. They sent Mimsey away, with orders never to contact Amber again. Not only was it seen as a punishment for Amber for getting attached to the elf, but it was a way to get rid of the busybody elf.

At the beginning of her second year, she received a letter from her parents stating that she needn't come back for holidays and summers. They found out that money they had received from the grandmother's estate since the time of Amber's birth stopped once Amber was in boarding school. No, they didn't need the money, they were just greedy. Luckily for Amber, her account was in her name only, an arrangement her grandmother made for her. She is also still their sole heir by blood, as they are unable to disown her. Disowning is not allowed in her biological family and carries severe consequences.

After that, she lived with her squib friend Haley, whose parents became her adoptive parents. The adoption was a legality, for practical purposes only, and does not circumvent her biological heritage.

The rest of second year  passed uneventfully for her.

During the break between second and third years, Amber had some help taking care of some unfinished business. As a result, she has built up some self-confidence and has finally jumped a major hurdle by facing her worst fear.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Amber is very determined to reach any goal she has, no matter what she has to do. She is also manipulative and isn't above blackmail or backstabbing. Those are last resorts though. While she would never want to run anything or be in charge, she wouldn't mind working behind the scenes as long as it benefitted her.

Writing Sample: (Borrowed from a site I'm a Founder on, so it will never show up here, as that version of the character has developed differently. And it's mine, so I can use it. If requested, I can give the link to this particular thread.)

It was a chilly Saturday morning in November, but no matter how much she wanted to huddle in her bed, under her warm covers, or in front of a warm fireplace, Amber forced herself to get up. She felt a bit better after a nice, hot shower and dressing in clothes she’d tossed a warming charm at before putting on. She had some major plans for the day.

Ever since she’d arrived at the Center, she’d been holding on to her self-control by a very fine string. The duel with Tim and the Samhain celebration had helped, but all progress had reversed with Tommy’s rejection of her. Sure, she’d survive and she wasn’t going to go all girly and pine away. She was better than that. But it was just one more thing in that long line of terrible events.

She looked in the mirror one last time to make sure she looked as mature as possible, paying special attention to her eyes to make sure they weren’t giving anything away. Nope. They were just as blank and expressionless as they’ve been for almost a week. Good. No one would be able to tell anything if no emotions were shining through.

She checked the time before stowing her wand in its holster, leaving the built-in wand pocket of her sleeve free. As she looked at herself once more, from all angles to make sure she looked her best, she couldn’t help but give her reflection a cold smile. She would free herself today. Not only would she work on getting the process of emancipation started, but she would free herself of the recent horrors in her life.

She walked down the stairs, out the door of the dorm house, and over to the main school building. She’d spun some story to Alyssa and Hazel about having some questions regarding her Russian citizenship, mainly wondering if she still had it since the adoption had been overturned. Receiving permission, she was told to let one of them know when she was back. She had no problem agreeing.

Tossing in the floo powder, she shouted her destination and found herself standing in the reception room of the Ministry building. After letting the person behind the desk know why she was there, she sat down and waited to be called. As she was called, a guard asked to see her wand. He gave her a smile as he handed it back to her and led her to the correct department.

She was bored by the time she finished answering all the social worker’s questions. Yes, she did have somewhere to stay. Yes, she did have funds to take care of herself. Yes, she had been adopted when her biological parents signed off on it. Yes, the adoption had been overturned when her ex-sister had been disowned. Okay, her Russian citizenship had gone with it. That was no problem. Yes, she was on her second guardian when she was notified of her biological parents’ deaths. Yes, the healer at SAM had requested emergency guardianship. Yes, that did make three guardians in less than a year.

After doing a financial and address check and sitting through yet another meeting with a psychologist, she was granted her petition to try for guardianship. She signed the papers right then and there. She was told that copies to be signed would be sent to those whose signatures were needed. She smiled and thanked the people and went back out front, heading for the door.

She was almost at the door when she was bumped into. She grabbed the man’s arm reflexively to stay on her feet. As the man apologized, she noticed his wand stuck casually in his pocket. She assured him she was fine as she subtly relieved him of his wand, which she knew was a second one as she felt another in his sleeve. She slid his wand up her sleeve as she gave one last smile and left the building.

She stepped into a small diner and tried to be unnoticed as she headed to the restroom. It was surprisingly empty considering that it was lunchtime, but she entered a stall anyway. She tried to apply a glamour charm to herself, so no one would be able to describe her later. On the third attempt, she managed to do it correctly. She now had white-blond hair, brown eyes, appeared four inches taller, and at least three years older. She left the restroom, making sure she was noticed as she ordered lunch.

She finished her lunch, paid, and left a nice tip. She went back to the Ministry, to use the public floo. The Center catered to magical and muggle teens, and was therefore in a muggle section of New York City. She knew though, that it was close by the magical sector of the city. She appeared on the other end of the floo in a clothing store. She made her way out and hailed a cab, thinking it was a strange way of traveling, but it was how she’d arrived when she’d been sent there previously.

It took almost no time to arrive at a spot, another clothing shop, just a few blocks from the Center. The distance was covered quickly as she made her way there. For a few precious minutes, she stared at the non-descript gray building. That building, and the people there, had made her life literally a living hell. As her wand had been confiscated upon arrival, she’d been left with only the protection her physical fighting skills had afforded her. Those hadn’t helped much with someone who was almost twice her size. She felt that she should have suspected something happening while there, as the Center supposedly treated all sorts of mental disturbances. The hardest lessons to learn were that some muggles could pick locks with no trouble and that the isolation chamber, especially when one was left there overnight, was entirely soundproof.

She hadn’t told anyone, not even Tim, what had happened to her there. She only hoped she’d done a good enough acting job that he only saw that it was similar to how she’d act when she’d return from Durmstrang, as if all will and strength had been tortured out of her. All of her problems had started here. Well, not exactly. They’d started with Baskov sending her here, but there was nothing she could do about him, at least not right now.

A smile slowly overtook her face. She moved slowly into an alley behind the Center. She aimed the stolen wand at the building. “Fiendfyre,” she whispered, the word coming harshly through her breath. Her eyes reflected the flames that were so quickly overtaking the building. Braving the extreme heat after casting a few cooling charms on herself,, she moved closer and tossed the stolen wand into the flames. Her cold smile turned into a feral grin as she heard screams. She ran down the alley and noticeably emerged at the end of the street, following a crowd of people. The flames were too hot for anyone, even the firefighters in their protective gear, to save any inhabitants, and those flames moved too swiftly for those inhabitants to leave themselves. “One, two, three,” she counted silently until she reached twenty-nine. “Never again will I be hurt by any of you in any way,” she told her victims mentally.

Moving a few streets over, she hailed another cab to get her to the NYC branch of Morrigan, Inc. There, she ducked into the bathroom, still in her disguise. She reversed the glamour. It was easier to undo than it was to do. She knew the receptionist, and knew that her presence here would never be mentioned. After a short conversation, mostly about how Tim was doing, Amber flooed back to school.

She checked in with Hazel and Alyssa, as she’d promised, telling them that the meeting had run longer than she thought, so she’d grabbed lunch while she was out. Since she’d felt a bit stressed, she’d done a bit of browsing after lunch and lost track of time. After getting the all-clear from the teachers, she smiled and left the main building.

She couldn’t wait to find her best friend now that she’d banished her monsters. She knew she’d be much better company now, and maybe Tim would stop worrying about her. Now that she was free from the horrors, maybe she’d even tell him what happened while she was there. That might make him worry more, but at least he’d understand why she seemed so unbalanced since she returned and why she was so vicious in their duel. Of course, she’d probably have been just as vicious anyway, because that’s just how they were, but still.

Sum up your character in one paragraph: Amber is a study of contradictions. She can be the best friend someone could ever have, or their worst enemy. She can be caring and compassionate, or cold and ruthless. She has a quick temper, but calms down quickly in general. If she feels betrayed, she won't forget...or forgive for the most part. For someone who's hurt her to be forgiven, she has to care about that person more than anything else. She's smart, but not always in a way that adults would prefer.
