[Feb 19th] Qvi Docent Discit - He Who Teaches, Learns

About 3:30pm, immediately following the Apparition lesson

Ignan had mulled over the lesson at breakfast that morning, and again over lunch. He knew the importance of teaching these things, especially given one of the last times he'd visited the hut in the grounds which had become the school's hospital. Here he was again, visiting covered in blood - only this time it was his own, and not the late Ava Grosvenor's.

Noriko had thrown herself clear of him apparating with such swift force it had surprised him, fully expecting her to freeze and come with him. He only had himself to blame, feeling a little more complacent, he'd not quite been so sure of his deliberation, or had it been destination, his head had begun to ache before it, and now it span with onset of shock from the blood loss.

He would be very glad to be reunited with his hand, whatever the circumstances that had gone before, and he could only hope the esteemed healer within the hut could do so. Hopefully the patronus from Landis had made it to her first to prepare for their arrival. Perhaps he should have spoken about it to her before, should the students have been injured - but it was harder to splinch the passenger in side along, if not almost unheard of.

Trishna had tucked Ignan's hand away into a pocket, he'd seen him do it. He'd seen plenty of severed limbs in his time - Merlin, he even kept a bewitched one from Durmstrang in the classroom for demonstrations only the other week to the seventh years, but seeing your own, and being split from it so unexpectedly had thrown him. He was not the young man he used to be as an auror - although just as able to sling around magic and hold shields and delve deep into knowledge, his physical being was aging at a rate of knots however much he declined to acknowledge it.

At the door of the hut, Tappy released him from the hovering spell, which was lucky, as Ignan wretched up his lunch what with the horrible clammy and nauseating feeling already, but the added motion sickness from being hovered while still conscious. He'd not felt so wretched in years.
"Eugh, Merlin." He uttered to himself automatically wiping at his clammy face, and finding his hands smeared with blood still, swiping it across his greying skin.

This really could form a pattern - not that he wanted it to do so. But of the 3 times Tapendra had visited the Hospital Hut, twice he'd shown up at the door covered in blood.

At least this time the bleeder was alive. That was a minor plus. And at least it hadn't been a student - especially Wakahisa, as absolutely insane as that girl had to be now.

Despite Ignan's clear discomfort, Tapendra was still glad he'd used the hover charm - he'd been able to take the hill in his long-strided run and gotten the Professor to the Hut in far less than the fifteen to twenty minutes it would have taken him otherwise.

When he removed the charm and Ignan threw up, he winced. "Sorry, Ignan. Sorry-" he said as he started carefully  walking him up the stairs, struggling for a moment to get one of his hands free and knock sharply on the door.

"Madam Nagde!" he called, hoping to hell that Landis had contacted her somehow. At least he knew her fireplace was connected to St. Mungo's on the Floo network - if she wasn't here, that'd come in handy.

The patronus had arrived and, indeed, within moments, the hospital hut had been prepared.  A limb severed through splinching wasn't exactly a difficult or daunting endeavor but the hasty triage was more on par with the pace that Tulojow was used to.  Unless something peculiar had happened, it was unlikely to be life threatening if handled correctly and it was, if nothing else, more titillating than the overage nosebleed or maliciously aimed stunning jinx.  Indeed, things around Hogwarts were proving to be less than boring as of late.

The massive golden eagle had been stationed by the window near the front door since Tulojow had started with preparations.  She'd been busy levitating a pair of medium sized cauldrons over the fire in the main room when she heard the bird's sharp whistle announcing the arrival of the professors.

She remained by the fireplace but swung the door open with a slight flick of her wand.  "Sit him on the bed," she instructed as she straightened up and limped back towards the bed.  She scribbled down a quick note on a slip of parchment and handed it to the eagle before tossing a handful of floo powder in the fire.  With a flash of green, the eagle dove through the green flames and Tulojow turned towards the two men.

"This happened just now, correct?"  She assumed that was the case - she doubted they would have dallied along the way but it was important to verify the injury was, indeed, as fresh as possible.  "Alright.  Let's take a look at what we've got.  Tapendra - can you gi- help him out of his shirt," she instructed as she unscrewed a glass water-filled jar.

Tapendra nodded, and quickly ushered Ignan over to the bed, sitting him down on it and pulling his cloak off as gently as possible. He took out Ignan's lost hand and set the bloodstained garment aside, far enough away to not get in the way, and then tossed his own blood-stained over coat onto it. He set to work after rolling up the sleeves of his white button-up shirt.

"It's been about 15 minutes - I put a spell to stop the bleeding, but he was bleeding for about a minute, maybe two," he said as he worked, unbuttoning Ignan's shirt. "I didn't have time to protect the hand very well - hopefully that doesn't cause a problem..."

Aware Tulojow was a much better judge of that than he was, he went back to Ignan, trying to figure out how to deal with his shirt without hurting his arm. He sighed. "You'll have to forgive me for this, Ignan - I'll send it to the house elves for cleaning and repair," he said,  taking his wand and carefully cutting the sleeve with a charm so that he could slide it off without jostling Ignan's handless arm.

Seeing the arm itself in full view, with his rush of adrenalin wearing off, made him aware he could see the bone. A wave of nausea made him totter on his feet before he tossed the shirt aside and sat down, shaking his head to clear it.  "Ugh - what now?"

Ignan caught a glimpse of his amputated hand for a moment before Tapendra covered it. Everything seemed to be slowing down, and the pain was seeping up his arm. He took a deep breath and steadied himself with his remaining hand as Tapendra wrestled the shirt off his back.

"Sorry, both of you." He told them both, looking down at where his hand should have been and then away from it again. He could do it if it was someone else, and he was in their position, but he had to admit, he was a right coward when it was his own limbs being hacked off.

Tulojow nodded as she did some quick calculations.  The splinching had been fifteen minutes ago; Ignan had been bleeding for, at most, two minutes before Tapendra had stopped the bleeding.  The severed hand had been, as of yet, untouched.  Other than getting transported to the hospital hut, of course.

The Healer gave the severed hand a quick inspection as Tapendra freed Ignan's arm from his shirt.  Between the two of them, there seemed to be an abundance of needless apologizing going on.  The tissue on the hand seemed fresh and the blood supply seemed only damaged on the very surface, as was typical of apparition-induced injuries.  The abyss of time and space, thankfully, left impressive-looking injuries but the cuts were usually clean.  "Apologies on my behalf are entirely unnecessary."

"What did you use to stop the bleeding?" Tulojow asked as she set the glass jar on the table and pulled a chair up to the edge of the bed.  She drew her wand and held it in a manner that was more customary with a pencil than a wand; with her free hand she gingerly palpated Ignan's elbow.  She touched the tip of her wand against his elbow three times as she set a block at each of the major nerves.

"So, what were you up to when this happened?  This happened during class?"  She asked, partly to gauge the professors' mental awareness and partly to determine the need for follow up with students.

Ignan was doing his utmost best not to look at his left arm. If he didn't look there, he could trick his mind into thinking everything was fine.
"Yes, it happened in front of the students." He replied, voice weary and quieter than his usual self. "Preventing themselves side along apparating..." He glanced at his left arm out of natural curiosity as Tulojow tended to it and looked away again swiftly.
"Noriko Wakahisa ended up with my hand still attached to her quite... unexpectedly." He frowned and swallowed.
"You can reattach it can't you?" Ignan asked worriedly to Tulojow, turning his head to look at her almost pleadingly, keeping his eyes fixed on her head and not what she was doing.

Tapendra, having moved the soiled clothing to a safe distance, was hoverin - trying to stay out of the way, but be nearby if Tulojow needed anything. "I used the Blood Flow Charm," he said in response to her question, moving slightly to the side as she set to work on Ignan's arm. "I'm not that good at healing spells, but it seemed to do the trick..."

A blood flow charm had been placed on the arm stub fifteen minutes ago; the severed hand had been untouched.  "Good thinking," Tulojow reassured Tapendra as she carefully unscrewed the top of the jar.  "Clotting the blood at the injury should have avoided too much necrosis."

The answer wasn't given with Ignan's usual self-assuredness but it was true.  Ignan was shaken and unsettled, as was to be expected, but he had enough where with all to be connected to reality.  "Wakahisa?" Tulojow repeated, looking up as she fished in the jar with three fingers.  "I'll go hunt her down after everything's in the clear here and make sure she's not having a panic attack."  Tulojow pulled out the small, wriggling, grey-striped leech and held it against the bloodied stump until the creature caught hold of the exposed flesh before fishing in the jar for another.

"Assuming nothing strange happened with the vessels clotting,  we should have no trouble reattaching it.  The hand may itch like hell for a few weeks, though."

"If that's the only consequence, I can live with that, Madam Nagde." Ignan replied swiftly, caught between fascination at why there were leeches attached to him and the inability to look at where his arm should be critically without feeling nauseous.

"You know what the worst thing about this is?" He asked, looking to Tapendra - anything to distract himself. "We still have to finish the rest of the lesson off. Though I've probably given most of them more of an incentive not to be forced to apparate." The whole room went at a tilt for a moment and he gripped the edge of the bed with his remaining hand, taking a sudden deep breath inwards of the smell of herbs and wood from the room.
"This feels worse than a whole night of drinking. At least then you can't feel your limbs."

Tapendra, who was likewise looking for a way to distract himself - leeches? Really? This wasn't the 1500s! And he could hear the - the slurping -

He pulled his wand and looked at Ignan as the man spoke to him, managing a weak smile. "We'll worry about the follow-up lesson...later, I think. And in the case of drinking, you get to have some fun, first. And leeches aren't involved -"

Ignan seemed to be loosing focus, so Tapendra pointed his wand at his own hand and cast a chilling spell; his hand suitably cold, he pressed his palm to Ignan's forehead to help him focus and stay conscious. "Is this how you...how you treat splitchings, normally?" he asked Tulojow weakly, tone clearly indicating he never ever watched to get splitnched again if that was the case.

Something cold pressed against Ignan's forehead and he momentarily closed his eyes, shutting up as he heard Tapendra and Tulojow converse over something. Half opening them again, he did his best not to stare at anything that was going on to his left side, not that he was easily able to focus on anything. He realised with a start that it was Tapendra's hand pressed to his forehead - and flinched backwards a moment in alarm at how uncomfortable the whole situation was - leeches attached where his hand should have been, blood smeared everywhere, shirtless, with a colleague attempting to reattach the limb while the other, also splattered in blood, pressed his hand to Ignan's clammy, blood splattered forehead.

"This goes down under the things we will never speak about." He muttered to Tapendra. "With the other thing." He squinted up at Tappy - and took another deep breath to try and clear his mind.
"Or Merlin help me, hand or no hand, I'll ..." His eyes closed again and his head turned to the left.
"Leeches, really?" He echoed Tapendra's question in surprise, his muddled brain only just realising what was going on.

Tulojow nodded without looking up from her work.  "I figured you could," she told Ignan.  There was no doubt Tulojow's approach to healing was eclectic - her education had been as equally eclectic.  But, why change tactics when no one's managed to improve upon them in thousands of years?  Apparently, though, both of the men seemed rather curious about the choice of treatment.

"Depends on the degree of splinching and what's been done between when the injury took place and my being able to treat it.  Had I been on the scene, it would have been a straightforward procedure.  But, blood flow was cut off - which is a good thing," Tulojow offered, glancing towards Tapendra.  "-that's better than bleeding out."

She gently lifted the unattached hand and inspected the tissue.  "Blood flow has to be restored to the tissue before we try to reunite you with your hand," she told both of them.  "Most magical or contemporary medical means rely on damaging the tissue to reopen the blood vessels - but scar tissue can and will effect healing.  Those little wigglers can get the blood flowing again without the same tissue damage and will keep it flowing until I'm done.  Sometimes, the natural world does actually know what it's doing."

"This goes down under the things we will never speak about.  With the other thing."

A slight grin twitched at the corner of Tulojow's mouth but she, otherwise, didn't react.  "Alright, best get as comfortable as possible.  I'm going to need to immobilize you before I start reattaching.  Best to avoid any unfortunate mishaps."

He raised his hand slightly as Ignan jerked in surprise, but other than that the older man didn't protest it or try to bat him away, so he left his hand pressed to Ignan's forehead.  "Makes sense, I suppose," he said, after a moment's pause. "Whatever works the best..." Mostly he was agreeing because he really didn't want to think of the leeches any more. Or the wiggling.

Ignan's words drew his gaze and he grunted in agreement - this didn't rank up there with the other incident, in his mind; it wasn't even close - but he could see why Ignan was unhappy about this, at the moment.

Tulojow's slight smile made him want to sigh - she wasn't deaf or stupid, of course - but pointing out to Ignan he was addled enough to let things like that slip wasn't exactly the nice or smart thing to do.

"What do you need me to to do?" he asked Tulojow, as she was ready to move on.

Feeling too woozy to complain further, Ignan complied with the wishes and stared upwards, trying to focus his mind and keep a clear head, rather glad of the prospect that his hand would shortly be reattached, sans leeches. This would undoubtedly go into the memories of the several hundred students in the castle above. It wasn't often a Professor caused themselves a magical accident to such an extent (even if he had heard about the famous Professor Grubblyplank who once taught Care of Magical Creatures and lost several limbs permanently.)

He could only hope the process was swift, painless and didn't embarrass him any further, not that his dignity was too intact at the moment (not due to Tulojow or Tapendra.. rather those ruddy students).
"If you do that for too long," he told Tapendra, his voice a little sluggish and sleepy, "you'll lose your hand to frostbite."

The older Professor's eyelids drooped. The adrenaline was beginning to dim, and the shock was taking over. He knew the peril of giving into sleep, but also knowing he had to keep still while the reattachment occurred, it was altogether tempting. With any luck, he'd wake to find it reattached and nothing having happened at all.

Unlikely.
