Physical Description: Unlike her siblings - John who favors their father and Sophie who favors their mother; Ruby is somewhere in the middle. She has her fathers dark curls, her mother's brown eyes and a face that can sometimes only be called "turtle". She lacks her younger sister's prominent chin and koala-like cheeks. Depending on the time of year her skin ranges from golden to almost sallow if she's not careful with herself.

Her sense of style, if one could call it that, is very Bohemian Rhapsody. She likes her clothes over sized and hats that have extremely floppy brims. Luckily she doesn't share her little sister's somewhat defective height, standing an easy 5'10", Sophie often accuses Ruby and John of hogging all the leg genes in the family.

Personality Description: Up to this point in her life Ruby June Flickwick has been the reliable one - no, not reliable; Ruby has been the repressed one. Always calm and collected, always steadfast and true; if she ever got in trouble it was because she was going along to be sure no one else got murdered to death doing something stupid. She has spent most of her life as the goto girl for skinned knees, Potions notes, and broken hearts. Emulating her mother in every single way has been a full time job she's held down since she was two and her baby sister Sophie came onto the scene. At some point in her very early childhood someone drilled it into Ruby's head she was the one responsible for taking care of everyone else.

Needless to say that is an incredible amount of pressure to put on someone so young. Worrying herself sick has been one of her only pastimes to date. This is in sharp conflict with the more hedonistic general nature of the Scorpio; and just goes to show that often times nurture even trumps star signs. There are subtle traits of the Scorpio she processes; her persistence for instance, as well as strong willpower, and a great emotional depth for someone her age. With each of those positive gifts from the stars comes the more… lackluster traits that she has struggled against since early childhood. She has extremely obsessive tendencies, she fixates on problems or events and runs herself into the ground.

One of the hardest things for Ruby to put to rest is the feeling of jealousy she harbors toward her siblings. It is a constant struggle for her, especially lately, to not allow her resentment to overrule her love for them. This problem has increased tenfold since Sophie became involved with SAWS. While Ruby is proud of her sister’s tireless passion for the cause she feels very much like she is being forced out of the pigeonhole she was never sure she wanted anyway. She was the daughter most like their mother, she was the one headed right for the ministry, she was the one who was proactive for causes no one else wanted to take up. Now, not only does Sophie get to be the baby, irresponsible, bullheaded, and Daddy’s short tempered favorite… she’s a revolutionary too.

Ruby just isn’t sure what to do with that; with any of the changes happening around her. It’s a good thing Scorpios are also known for their desire and ability for inner transformation because the middle Flickwick daughter is starting to have serious questions about her identity - even which classes it is she should try to excel in. In all this personality turmoil she is finding a rather wide rebellious streak that might just go looking for trouble.

History: In the beginning there was Ramona and Duncan and one night’s stomach contents on a new pair of boots. Then came John, the adoption of Emer, and somewhere in there a little black haired buddle known as Ruby June was born. Life was complex in it’s simplicity. She and Emer were raised more like twins than two separate people. John was a trouble maker and before the newest editions were three along came baby number four; the adorable and precocious Sophie. If Ruby had ever had any plans on being the family favorite they died in the moment the pintsized Flickwick took her first breath. From that moment on, even as a toddler, Ruby spent her days toddling after Sophie playing mommy. Ruby knew, inherently, that being a good big sister was her job; and it was a very important job. She knew that she needed to provide the best example possible to counter their older brother’s obvious bad influence.

This is a trend that has continued through Ruby’s life to present day. John is the one who convinces Sophie she is invincible and capable of anything. Ruby is the one who picks up the pieces and takes care of scrapes when the youngest Flickwick tries something dangerous and falls flat on her face. Meanwhile Emer is somewhere with her nose in a book and only looks up to join in John’s amused laughter. If something is broke Ruby fixes it. Living quietly behind the scenes of everything is what Ruby does best - and she has most of her life. This is, perhaps, a self-fulfilling prophecy as she buys into the family roles as defined by some unnamed source in her childhood.

John was the rebel who caused a string of marital problems between their parents; Emer was ever the Ravenclaw - with her head in the clouds and a cynical nature that chose to make jokes rather than feel the strain in the household. And Sophie, oh little Sophie; not only was she the baby and so adorable she could make someone’s face hurt - but she wasn’t bigger than a minute when they realized that she’d been gifted with a special talent. Now, it should not be confused that Ruby envies her sister’s visions; having helped the tiny girl through nightmares and self doubt it’s quite the opposite. However, coming from such…a gifted, shall we say, family it has left Ruby in question of the things she actually wants from life. Is she the Earth Mother driving herself into the ground because she wants to save humanity or because she is living up to someone else’s vision for her?

Ramona, for her part and all her good intentions as perhaps failed Ruby the most. As a workaholic with guilt tendencies about the fact she allowed her husband to raise their children while she worked; she pushes Ruby much harder than John or Emer. She seems to expect more from her technical oldest girl than the rest. Duncan of course wants life to be mellow, for the children to find their own path - but unfortunately he isn’t the voice inside Ruby’s head. There is nothing the seventh year wants more than to please her mother. From the first day she stepped into the Great Hall she has driven herself to be exactly the daughter she thinks Ramona wants her to be. In this, her final year at Hogwarts there is a small outcropping of issue with the plan. Ruby is running out of steam. The desire to please is taking a back seat to a great deal of exhaustion and resentment the middle Flickwick feels for her siblings.

In the beginning, when she first came to Hogwarts, there was not much of a standard for her to live up to. John was a Slytherin - but not a particularly ambitious one. Though he was only in his third  year his academic abilities were lackluster at best. In many ways it baffled the family as to how he'd been sorted into the snake house. The problem, of course, for Ruby came in the form of Emer. The two - who had been mostly inseparable in the first eleven years of their life were ripped apart and placed in seperate houses. It wasn't such a shock of course because Emer had always been unnervingly intelligent. In a way, when Sophie was sorted into Gryffindor it was... a relief. For the first time in her life Ruby felt as though she had something just to herself. No one else in the family had been a Hufflepuff - not even in her scads of uncles, aunts, and cousins. It did provide some problems in so much as it made it harder to keep an eye on Sophie and be sure the girl hadn't done something to get herself maimed or killed.

Her one saving grace has been a seven year friendship with a kindred wishy-washy soul named Fauna Blake. The girls met in their first year and became fast friends. For the last six and a half years they have shared crushes, chcoc frogs, test anxiety; and in this last year some very serious growing pains. It seems most natural that while Fauna is trying to break out of her good girl shell that Ruby would begin to question the same. Up to this point she's been a good student (though she gets annoyed when comparing herself to Emer because, well. NO one can compete with Emer in the battle of intellect. Ruby's interest in lessons (though she's done fair across the board) has leaned toward; Care of Magical Creatures, Potions, Charms, Transfiguration, and surprisingly (given both her sister's lack of interest *or in Sophie's case skill*) Defense Against the Dark Arts. She's continued taking Divination simply to please her grandmother but feels it's quite silly given the fact she'll never be as skilled as Sophie.

With this year's closing drawing closer with each day she's finding herself wanting to break away.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?: While Hufflepuff seems to be a "catch all" house in general - Ruby fits in largely because she is so loyal and hardworking. She doesn't do what she does for recognition or fame, it isn't ambition that drives her... she does what she does because she believes it's right. She doesn't desire fame or fortune, to be brave or brilliant she just wants to make the world a genuinely better place.

Sum up your character in one paragraph: The second oldest Flickwick child and the first girl, Ruby has always been a mother hen. She’s extremely passive in most ways, always looking for the silver lining and willing to compromise. She is level headed in the face of Sophie and John’s…inability to think things through to the final stage of repercussions. She is constantly having to bite her tongue to keep from saying “I told you so” - because she does, always, tell them before hand. She isn’t a complete wet blanket, she just has some trepidation when it comes to her little sister thinking she can some how land a jump from the second floor and their stupid big brother egging her on.  Years of taking care of others has taken it's toll on the recently turned 18 year old. She finds herself wanting more out of life than being someone's nursemaid or shadow. She intends to make a name for herself or break some bones trying!

What Experience has Prepared You For This Honor?: Ruby has spent most of her life taking care of other people; at the very least looking after them and being motherly. She's managed to keep Sophie alive for the last five years - which given her sister's tendency to do absolutely asinine things is quite an accomplishment.
What Do You Think the Most Important Aspect of This Job Is:? Offering guidance and understanding to her fellow students; Ruby isn't one to rush to take points and tattle on people. She considers herself fair minded - if you lock people down too tightly the inmates will revolt and there will be utter chaos. Hogwarts does not really need help to descend into chaos lately.
Tell a Story From Your Past That Has Proven Your Mettle:  Ruby is the kind of person who does all the jobs no one else wants to do; that people might like to pretend don't exist. She's brave in her own right, not in a loud showy way like Sophie - but in the quiet dignity it takes to (on the whole) put yourself second and the happiness and greater good for everyone else first. Rather than trying to intimidate people and harp upon the importance of rules she believes given half a chance most people will do the right thing - and for that small population that wont she;s inherited her mother's guilt-tripping powers and subtle firm hand. If her counterpart Dion is a ball buster she's the one who tries to gently prod people in the right direction; and has been known to outright shame someone into making better choices.

Ruby is the second oldest Flickwick child and the first girl. As such she was very much a miniature mother to the rest of the clan. The first seventeen years of her life were spent trying to live up to her mother's expectations of the person she should become. She was a Hufflepuff Prefect in her seventh year and was set to start an internship with the Werewolf Liaison Office after graduation. However when her mother Ramona Flickwick was horrifically mauled to death in the March 11th Werewolf Attacks, Ruby pushed aside her predetermined path and began to flounder a little. Upon graduation she decided to spend some time oversees in New York with her mother's family. As of August 10th, 2009 she has returned to London, but is still unsure what the devil to do with herself and is currently crashing with Kale Ferris.

So what is Ruby looking for? Well anything really, she needs old friends and new friends, people to butt heads with and maybe someone to help guide her back to some sort of career path. She may or may not be getting involved with Kale Ferris, she may or may not still like girls (she never could decide if she was in love with Lou and it just so happened that Lou was a girl or that she likes girls and Lou just happened to be a very likable girl). She has unkinked a bit from her former rigid set of self imposed to-lofty-to-ever-be-obtained sort of sweetness and I'd like to explore that a bit. She feels a fair amount of guilt over just up and leaving but no so much that if she had it to do all over again she would change anything. She needs more moral ambiguity in her life, I decided. So! Plots and things and stuff and words!

Describe your new job and how you go about doing it:
Reducto Records: General shopkeeper-y things, tends to work morning shifts, often opens on her days on. Restocks, organizes, takes money in exchange for goods and services.

The Inkwell: keeping the logbook (logbook is where the appointments are written down and eventually logged with notes (satisfied customer, personal or inkwell design, name, etc)), scheduling appointments and welcoming clients[1].
