Welcome to the Dueling Club. I, Kit Branwell, will be your president and guide, assisting you into reaching your full potential as a duelist and spell caster. I hope our time together will be enjoyable and educational. Please do not hesitate to come to me with any questions or concerns you may have. That being said, there are some things to keep in mind while a part of the Dueling Club.
~Kit Branwell

1.   REGISTRATION: Every interested member must sign up by registering their name with Kit Branwell in one of three groups: Beginning, Intermediate or Advanced.
(OOC: Shoot me a PM, IM or sign up on the Dueling Club plot thread)

2.   SKILL GROUPS: Which group a student signs up for is up to the student. First years may sign up for the Advanced group if they wish, and students studying for their O.W.L.’s may sign up in the beginning group if this is where they feel their skill level is at. The only restriction I have played is that any student studying for N.E.W.T’s in any of the spell casting classes (Charms, Transfiguration, Defense Against the Dark Arts) cannot belong to the Beginning group, only the Intermediate or Advanced.
(OOC:  sign-up is all in character, where your character would place themselves, which might not accurately reflect their abilities)

3.   CHANGING GROUPS: I, the Dueling Club president, reserve the right to move students around based on their performance during club sessions.
(OOC: And if you feel your character has improved enough over the course of their time in the club, shoot me a PM to ask about moving up)

4.   RESPECT: Respect each other, the president and professors that help out in the dueling club.
(OOC: This translates to the players too, guys. Respect each other and talk to each other if there is an issue. OOC and IC events are separate and should not affect each other)

5.   RESTRICTED SPELLS: Spells that are not permitted for use in the dueling club: Any curse, spell or jinx that is classified as restricted or ‘Dark Arts’ by the ministry of magic. Depending on the severity of the infraction, an offending student will be removed from the day activities, be suspended from the club, or removed altogether. Joking around or  ‘accidents’ are not a valid excuse.

6.   RESTRICTED ITEMS: Shield clothing items from Weasley Wizard Wheezes or similar items from anywhere are not permitted to be worn dueling dueling club activities. Those caught in violation will be disqualified from the current activity. (OOC- thanks Josh, for this idea!)

7.   SPELL LIMIT: Remember that several hastily cast spells are always less effective than one solid spell with good concentration.
(OOC: To keep things from getting to chaotic, characters may only cast two (2) spells per post. What these spells are is up to you, but two is the limit)

8.   SPELL CLARITY AND AWARENESS: Know and be aware of spells, their incantations and effects, even if you cannot cast them yourself. This will only make you are better duelist. Be aware and attentive in duels  as to what is being cast by whom. Oblivious wizards are rarely dueling wizards
(OOC: To help control chaos, while in dueling threads, please mark any offensive spells in yellow, defenstive spells in blue and the target in green. This will help players from accidentally overlooking spells that have been cast in their posts.- thanks to John for this suggestion!)

9.   ENDING A DUEL: Duels are ended when one of the duelists surrenders is incapable of continuing the duel, or incapacitated. If a duel has gone on too long, I, the Dueling Club President, reserve the right to step in and call the match (OOC: Right now, I am putting a cap of five rounds on individual/player versus player duels. That means each character will get a chance to post five times. If no winner has been established, Kit will post and call the match. This is to prevent duels from dragging out too long. Duels right now will be decided by IC posts and OOC discussion amoung players. If there seems to be a trend of unrealistic dueling and super!duelers I'll change the system to dice and D&D-esq stats.)

10.   SPELL FAILURE: Remember while dueling the importance of correct enunciation and wrist form. Making a mistake on either could cause a mild to serious backfire on your spellcasting
(OOC: I have to disagree strongly with Kit here. Make mistakes! Lots of them! Choas is FUN. Have a Bat-Bogey spell go awry and make a student grow a duck bill and purple hair. Mispronounce Winggardium Leivosa and wind up with a Buffalo on your chest. Whatever. Where’s the fun when everything goes according to plan?)

11.   SPELL KNOWLEDGE: What spells you know are greatly influenced by your year and skill level. While younger years are certainly encouraged to study spell lists of classes above them, remember that you are far less likely to be successful on spells taught to students three years above you. Pre-dueling club practice is encouraged!
(OOC: Just another reminder that even the best student isn’t a spell casting expert. It took Harry ages to learn a summoning charm and even Hermione messed up or froze under stress- in high-pressured situations it was often Harry the responded first the appropriate spell and Hermione did end up splinching Ron in the seventh book. Check out AO’s spell guides here and here and don’t feel shy about checking out the Lexicon or Wiki to double check when the spell was introduced and how realistic is it or your character to know it. No one is perfect. People will and should get a little roughed up)

12.   STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES: Be mindful of your own strengths and weaknesses . The dueling club is here to help you improve your weaknesses and perfect your strengths, but that will only come if you admit and recognize where you fall short and allow myself, professors, and other club members to help you.
(OOC: No one is perfect or a master. Everyone has shortcomings and an Achilles heel.  This is a good thing. It makes your characters more realistic. No one is a perfect duelist. Be mindful of what your character is good and bad at.)

13.   INJURIES: If at any time during club activities, you wish to remove yourself from the activity or are injured, alert myself or a supervising professor and we will take care of you and escort you to the Hospital Hut if necessary.
(OOC: Just another reminder that especially when dealing with fledging wizards who haven’t mastered their spells or wands yet, people are going to get hit or a little roughed up, even if it’s as simple as a nosebleed. If for whatever reason you have a first year facing off against a seventh year that got an ‘O’ in all three spellcasting classes, chances of the first year getting anything through is unlikely.  However, most duels will be much more evenly matched. Keep this in mind while dueling. It’s boring to post or read a duel where nothing happens. Let your character get roughed up. Be realistic about their abilities. Talk to the players you are facing off with if you need to figure out where the duel will go.)

14.   QUESTIONS: If there are any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me
(OOC: what she said ;) )

15.   OUR MISSION: Lastly, the Dueling Club is meant to be both educational and recreational. It is my hope that you experience both while in the Club
(OOC: Have fun guys :D )

[Enchantment Type:] Counter-curse
[Appearance:] Sparks from the wand.
[Effects and Duration:] Removes minor mental incapacitations, such as the Babbling Jinx or the Confundus Charm. Specially trained wizards (such as Healers or some Aurors and Unspeakables) can use it to counter the Imperius Curse, though this usually requires Lefilimency therapy, especially if badly performed or long-lasting. Instantaneous against weaker spells, though stronger ones may require repeated casting,
[Regulations and Skill Level:] Legal. Advanced to Master.

Therakaio (Burn-Healing Charm)
[Enchantment Type:] Charm/Counter-curse
[Appearance:] Makes the affected area glow.
[Effects and Duration:] Heals first-degree burns completely, scabs over second-degree burns, heals third-degree burns enough that the victim will survive if he sees a Healer promptly. Instantaneous.
[Regulations and Skill Level:] Legal. Advanced.

Theratravma (Cut-Binding Charm)
[Enchantment Type:] Charm
[Appearance:] Glowing along the injured area until sealed
[Effects and Duration:] Causes a cut to seal itself completely. An effective counter to the Bleeding Hex, gouging magic like Sectumsempra or Effodio, or even mundane attacks with weapons like knives. Skilled casting can even remove scarring. Spoken repeatedly while tracing the wand over the affected area. Misuse or improper casting, however, can actually make the injuries worse, making it a double-edged sword of a spell. Instantaneous, though deeper wounds may require more than one tracing with the wand.
[Regulations and Skill Level:] Legal. Advanced.
[Canon:] Possibly used by Snape (or some personalized variant) to heal Draco Malfoy after Harry attacked him with Sectumsempra. The danger of unskilled use is derived from Hermione's refusal to treat Ron's splinching in Deathly Hallows, for fear that she would make him worse than he already was.
