Physical Description: Will she grow?
That’s the question that has been asked Harper’s entire life. She was born three weeks premature and was a tiny thing at only 4 lbs. 3 oz. Now, at eleven years old, she barely reaches 4’5” and isn’t much more than a stick figure. She’s starting to develop, but even that is minimal and her parents are sure she won’t have much of anything when she grows up. She has the general build of a doll and she looks, and is, very breakable
.
Her skin is a healthy shade of pale. She sunburns far easier than she tans, but after the terrible red goes away, she is a shade or two darker. She doesn’t have any freckles, despite her full Irish heritage, but she did inherit the red hair. It isn’t as prominent as in some, but in her wild, curly locks, there is a definite red undertone to the otherwise golden hair. Her eyes are a bright blue and are set symmetrically into her oval face. Her nose is button-like and her lips are small.
Even though her family is well off, Harper prefers to dress simply. When she isn’t in her uniform, she likes to wear dresses and looks quite like a little doll. Her hair is 90% of the time down, but because of its volume, she has to pull it back if she is writing.
Personality Description:
Harper is a rainbow of bright colors
She is Red. Passionate about everything and never too sparing with herself, the vivd Irish girl will throw all of herself into any project, menial or not. She revels in challenges and finds herself disappointed when something doesn’t live up to its promise.
Harper is Orange. She is extremely friendly and makes friends quickly and easily. Never one to shy away from anything, entertaining groups is only another challenge that she is determined to master. Still, she isn’t clingy and prefers companionship to deep relationships with one person. Those people that get close to her also call her Alice rather than Harper.
She is Yellow. Most everything makes her laugh and once she starts, the hardest thing for her is to stop. She bounces up and down when she gets excited and her eyes light up like someone lit a fire behind them. She has an extremely optimistic view of the future and still believes that she can do whatever she wants.
Harper is Green, although not very. Despite being born on the day where green surrounds every living thing, she personifies little of the color. She cares little for wealth and standing, finding pleasure in everyday simplicity. Still, green’s first love is freedom and few humans want anything else.
She is Blue. Little Miss O’Malley has days where she can be eerily calm. Her smile is still there, but it is tired. On days like these, she doesn’t talk much and doesn’t laugh much. She still surrounds herself with groups of people, but looks distant. When Harper is Blue, she is more obstinate than normal, refusing to be pulled away from whatever she is working on, which is usually a drawing or painting. She politely declines most, if not all, invitations and turns back to her pictures.
Alice is Purple: More than just purple, she is the color of violet tulle. Violet Tulle is her favourite color by far and personifies her more than any of the other colors. She has a drive to be vibrant and different. She is highly artistic and has deep drive, but also feels the need to be admired in all of her royal splendor.
Harper can be, though very rarely, Black. When Harper is black, it’s like a light’s gone out. She still smiles, but she has tears in her eyes. These are the only times she gets in fights with people. She holds a high reverence for peace and love, but sometimes, enough is enough. Alice is teased for her wild curls and simple dress. She is teased for her eccentricity and carefree manner. Mostly she is teased about her height and the word “leprechaun” is often heard about her. Usually, she just shrugs and goes on with her life. But Harper isn’t a quitter. When too much is just too much, she will go face to stomach with anyone. Afterwards, not being able to handle any type of pain or discord, she begins to cry.
EDIT: Harper is also very shy when one first meets her, but she warms up quickly.
History: William and Abby O’Malley were Hogwarts sweethearts with not a care in the world. William had a secure job and a comfortable bank account. Abby had inherited a lovely house in the woods from her Grandmother Alice. She didn’t need to work and spent her time attending to her house and garden with the help of only two house-elves, Piper and Bitty. Every night, the happy couple would walk on the lake shore and talk. On one of these days, they decided they would like nothing more than to have children. It was the only thing keeping their house from feeling like home. They wanted four, perhaps five children, to keep them busy and to make the house bright.
Unfortunately, plans go awry. Abby’s first pregnancy was difficult. It drained her strength and left her frail. When it was time for the baby to come, it was born already dead.
This experience scarred fragile Abigail and the thought of going through it all again left her shaking at night. Nevertheless, six months later, she found out she again was expecting.
Compared to the other, this pregnancy was simple and Abby had high hopes. She still hadn’t fully recovered from her first, but both O’Malley’s just knew that everything was going to be alright. But the baby came three weeks too early. The baby they named Harper Alice appeared to have nothing wrong with her, except for the fact she was far too small. The healers at St. Mungo’s kept her there for two more weeks just to let her fragile bird-bones gain more strength, even then, they warned the new parents to be very careful with her.
Abigail tried three more times to have children. Only one was successful, but the baby died seven days later. These failed pregnancies left Abby as delicate as her now four year old child.
Bitty and Piper took almost exclusive care of the little girl as William was often travelling for his work. When both of her parents were at home, Harper did everything she could to get their attention. Her first years had been one of parental neglect and she felt the loss astutely.
Then her mother began to regain her strength. She would go and sit in the garden with her toddler and teach her about how things grew and changed. By the time Harper was six, Abigail was strong enough to take a full walk around the lake again and did so with her daughter. She would also take Harper to play with her friend’s children. Still, she forsook taking Harper Alice to a public school and taught her herself with invaluable help from Piper and Bitty.
The two house elves morphed into Harper’s closest friends. Even though she had other magical children to play with, the house elves had always been there for her. Just after her sixth birthday, her magic began to show. The walls of the old stone house would change colors. Lights would turn off and on randomly. Harper had far too much fun letting her uncontrolled magic splatter paint and other such things on the walls.
Abby just changed it back with a small smile and some slight scolding. Her father then came home and found it not as amusing. Abigail was all for letting her little Alice run wild, but William wanted Harper to be taught correctly. So he hired a different witch to privately tutor her. This tutor was very strict, and Harper never liked her, but she managed to survive. As soon as the strict old witch had left, she could run free. Alice and Abigail were both so busy that they didn’t see each other very much, even though the close bond was still there.
In her last summer before Hogwarts, Alice and Abigail spent countless hours drawing and painting, skills Harper had learned and clung to in her primer. They weren’t as close as they had been, but they still shared a significant mother daughter bond. Then, Harper Alice left. She took only a few trunks with her filled with everything she would need and a few things she didn’t. She also took her elegant Barred Owl, Riona.
How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Harper was placed into Hufflepuff so quickly that it surprised everyone. The Hat barely waited to be put on her head before shouting it loudly and clearly. Harper’s bright, accepting attitude made her an obvious pick for the house. It didn’t place her in Gryffindor because she wasn’t brash. She didn’t fit in Ravenclaw because she was more extroverted than intro, and the hat would’ve had a heart-attack before putting the fragile girl in Slytherin. Hufflepuff was perfect for the bright eyed child’s creative mind.
Writing Sample:
Sum up your character in one paragraph: Harper Alice O’Malley is purely colorful. Her love of people, warmth, and art are the yellows, oranges, and purples of her picture. She has a powerful drive that cannot be quelled by anything. Perseverance is her strongest trait outside of her love of art. These are the reds. There is little green on her picture, but what is there is strong. Freedom is something she has always known and she is reluctant to give up. She also has a connection with the things that grow on the earth. There are also very few blues and blacks, but they are there all the same. Everyone needs balance, so every once in a while, Harper’s extroverted nature is pulled inside of her and she paints for no one but herself.
