[February 6] Decisions, decisions [Isaac]

on November 11, 2010, 12:51:46 AM

Merlin, Fauna was nervous. She paced along the corridor leading to Professor Frasier's office, wearing down her already worn sneakers. Though she'd done nothing wrong, and just wanted to talk, she felt like she was stepping into a snake pit.

Professor Frasier was nice. He wasn't like the Headmistress, Storm, O Morain, or even grumpy like Bombay. He had a good reputation and had been a perfectly decent Hufflepuff Head of House since Mainwaring had left. But Fauna kept imagining his face twisted in disapproval or disappointment, or even worse, laughing at her (at that point, his imaginary face merged with Bagnold's).

She stopped just outside his door, fidgeting. The conversation she'd had with Akiva, Fergie, and Sasha before coming back to school had caused her to rethink some of her decisions about classes. Her timing wasn't great, but she'd waited long enough, and if she waited any longer she would never know.

Taking a deep breath, Fauna knocked on his door. When she heard his voice, she stepped inside his office, giving him a sheepish, nervous smile.

"Hi. I was sort of hoping I could... talk to you. But you're probably busy," she said quickly, glancing at the papers on his desk.

The holidays were now more then officially over and Isaac was now firmly back in class mode.  He had managed to make some progress on his book, although not as much as he would have liked.  It didn't matter though as the publishers seemed happy enough with his work.  So, between classes and working on grades he would find himself plugging away at working on new chapters or making edits to what he had previously writting.

The knock on the door caused him to look up and he called out for the visitor to enter.  He wasn't expecting anyone during his office hours, but it certainly wasn't unheard of.  He was a Head of House after all, and that meant he often found himself much more involved in the daily lives of the students then he had been before.  It also meant visits from those not taking his class.

He gave Fauna a smile as she entered, curious why she was finding her way to his office.  He was her Head of House, but it made him wonder why she would choose to talk to him when some of the other professors that she might have more history with based on her classes.  Not that it seemed many of the 'old' faces were left around the school.

"Not at all, Miss Blake," he said, motioning to a chair on the opposite side of his desk.  "Please have a seat.  What did you need to talk to me about?"

Fauna took a seat and returned his smile. See? He was nice and polite. It was part of his job to listen to her crazy talk.

When he asked what she needed to talk to him about, she hesitated, trying to decide if she should explain everything and then ask, or just cut straight to the question. There was so much she could say! So much, in fact, that if she started telling him about her conversation with Akiva and the boys, or about the defense lessons she'd been doing with Raynor, or how torn she felt between her two interests (werewolf rights and defense), she would be in that chair for hours, blathering on while he wished he'd locked his door, doused the lights, and pretended he wasn't home!

She'd get straight to the question, then. If he wanted more information, she'd give it to him.

"So..." There was a long pause as she collected her thoughts. "I've been thinking about the classes I've been taking. The classes I chose since my fifth year, you know?"

Of course, one of those choices had been determined by the fact that she'd barfed into her potions cauldron during her OWLs, but that was neither here nor there. Only if he asked!

"And..." She shifted uncomfortably in her seat, glancing at him with a guilty, awkward expression. "I was just wondering. I mean, I know it's February," she winced. "So, really late to ask or even think about it." Ramble, ramble. Stall, stall.

"Would it be possible for me to try taking Potions again? And Transfiguration? And maybe... possibly... see if I can manage NEWTs in those subjects?"

She hated that it had taken her so long to talk about this, or even think about it. Added to that, she hated that she still didn't know exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Fauna had missed out on over a year and a half of material from Potions and Transfiguration, and those had been tough classes for her to begin with. Her seventh year, she already felt swamped by her regular class schedule, plus leading the Art Club, helping lead SAWS, and those private defense lessons every Sunday. Even if it were possible to tack on Potions and Transfiguration, Fauna didn't know the best way to go about it. The thought of dropping any of her current classes to make room for new ones upset her, and she suddenly understood, just a little, why Sasha didn't want to drop any of his classes either.

She held her breath. At least the question was out.
