Declan had decided to do another joint class. He hadn't had all three years together for the same class since December, and thought perhaps this would be a good time for that. The information he was going to cover would be review for his older years (which they needed for tests) and likely newer to his third years.

He hoped that class went okay. Since he had been promoted to Deputy Headmaster, he had heard whispers of disapproval from the student body and other members of the staff. He was determined to prove himself now, and if anyone set a single toe out of line they would answer for it. "Take your seats," he called out to the students. "Two to a table, and please do not sit with anyone you will be tempted to gossip or fight with. Try to keep to your years. Third years up front, fifth years in the middle, seventh years in the back."

"When you get seated, pull out a piece of parchment and list all of the human-like magical creatures that you can think of. After you've listed, set your quill down so I will know when you are done. This will likely be review for the older students, so please make sure you pay attention. It will be important for your OWLs and NEWTs."

Callum sat in the back of the classroom with Harold and Darren, one on either side of him. He'd shown up to classes earlier he hadn't been to all year, and didn't feel like having to deal with people sitting around him and gossiping. He settled in, eying Ó Móráin critically. Ever since he was announced being the new Deputy Headmaster, Callum had decided that he ought to respect him and take Care of Magical Creatures more seriously. It might be an elective, and something he might not use for the rest of his life, but if the man was in charge he commanded respect.

He pulled out some parchment and a quill, completing the task as instructed.
    Human-Like Creatures
    • House-Elves
    • Banshees
    • Hags
    • Merpeople
    • Trolls
    • Giants
    • Centaur

Callum tapped the quill on his chin. He was certain that he was forgetting someone, but wasn't sure what. He leaned over to inspect his brother's papers, seeing they were copying down what he wrote. That was a bust. He ought to have sat closer to Blake, he supposed. But was a centaur a creature? They had whole societies and were incredibly intelligent. Callum was fairly certain they were considered beings, and not creatures.

Naomi took her place in the front row. Scanning the row of fifth years behind her, and letting her gaze linger on the 7th years behind them. Declan had just been promoted and now he was mixing ALL these three classes together? She wasn’t sure if he was proving himself or about to do something very clever. Most of the time, with Declan, it was both, and if not that, the latter. But no matter what, she was genuinely happy for her cousin, even if her dark face kept a rather critical expression throughout the class.

To her it made no difference, she knew her creatures well enough and had grown up enough around her cousins to be expected of nothing less, despite how limiting their interactions and age gap might have made things. And since she had, she approached the subject with respect, even moreso now that Declan was deputy headmaster; she never attended the class without her hair pulled back in a long tight braid, her gloves kept handy in her coat pocket, leggings were substituted for nylon tights, and long black boots were her preferred footwear.

However, with the abundance of students and the mention of review, she doubted that she needed to come to class like this, but she did anyway, and her strong calligraphy whisked out a long list of names.

    Human-Like Creatures
    • Merpeople
    • Centaur
    • House-elves
    • Vampires
    • Banshee
    • Werewolves
    • Hags
    • Goblins
    • Trolls
    • Giants
    • Leprechaun
    • Fairy
    • Veela

Naomi filled out the list to the best of her ability. Although, she was positive she missed some. Since it wasn’t a test, that part didn’t bother her as much, it was just the matter that she knew she missed some, and couldn’t recall them. But Declan wasn’t as critical as her mother, and so she laid the quill down next to her paper and sat up straight, waiting for the rest of the class to finish.

Care of Magical Creatures had not been nearly as exciting as Baxter had hoped it would be. Not that he had anything against the professor... Professor O Morain was hard, he expected a certain level of competency, which was definitely understandable- if he were a professor, he would be the same way. But it seemed, from what he gathered, this information was only useful if a person were to need to use it for their future career. A few things went hand in hand with Defense, but not very much.

The problem was that Baxter had no idea what he wanted to be when he grew up yet, so out of fear for missing out on something, he had decided to take all offered electives. It was easier that way, to make sure he didn't miss something he'd need in the future. This class, as well as Divination, seemed to be two he could do without.

Baxter dropped into a seat next to Naomi, the only other third year present, and pulled out a bit of parchment at the professor's request. He dipped his quill in ink and thought for a few moments. Having been raised in a muggle household had been a slight disadvantage. He knew little of wizarding creatures, and was secretly jealous at the scratching he heard on Naomi's parchment. She was going to list more than him. Baxter was very careful not to look at her paper- however much he wanted- because he was not a cheater.

    Human-Like Creatures
    • giants
    • trolls
    • leprechauns
    • mermaids

His list was short, but it was all he could think of. Baxter groaned quietly as he put his quill down and turned his parchment over. Baxter also resisted the urge to whisper to Naomi. There was no way he would lose house points just to whine to a fellow third year about his lack of answers.

Erin was on time for class.  Whether that was because her house-mate was there, or if random probability had finally dictated that she would actually get to the right place at the right time, no one would ever know.  She sort of tuned the Professor out, finding her quill much more interesting.  She perked up long enough to hear the request, but Erin was not much one for reciting lists of any kind.  Wondering if this would count for a grade, she decided to go ahead and start.

    Human-Like Creatures
    • yetis
    • werewolves
    • veelas
    • giants
    • mermaids
    • vampires

Figuring that list was good enough for whatever they were doing, Erin quickly became bored.  As she began to search for something to do, she began fidgeting in her chair.  For the life of her, Erin could neither stand nor sit still for any prolonged period of times.  Idly, she wondered if most students fell asleep in class because they could not stay still either.  That idea made a surprising amount of sense to her.  Wondering if she should try it, she changed her mind and started playing with her quill instead.  She knew she was supposed to be doing something, but she forgot what it was.  Seeing the parchment in front of her, she sighed, being unable to think of anything else off the top of her head.

Ayla entered the class room not that far behind her fellow classmates. She suppressed a groan when she saw that they were once again grouped in with the older students then she had to suppress a pout when she was told she had to sit with her own year, so much for trying to sit with Fauna. She walked to the front of the class and sat at the nearest empty table. She was glad that Naomi was already sitting with Baxter. She had heard through the grapevine that the Slytherin had enjoyed a private study session with Blake and since then Ayla had decided she definitely did not like the girl (whom she had been rather indifferent about beforehand) She also wasn't going to sit next to Erin. Not only was the girl a Slytherin but she was the younger sister of Ayla's biggest tormentor - definitely not a good choice for a partner.

She took out her quill ignored the rest of the students especially the one that had come to sit down next to her and started to work on her list knowing full well that it was going to differ from the ones her fellow students were making.

    Human-Like Creatures
    • Yeti
    • Wendigo
    • Loup Garou/Werewolf
    • Ice Gnomes
    • Ice Lords
    • Wood Nymphs
    • Fairies
    • House Elves
    • Trolls
    • Giants
    • Merpeople
    • Vampires
    • Leprechauns
    • Veela

She placed her quill down and let out a soft sigh before turning her eyes back to the Professor. Since her outburst during their yeti hunt Ayla had become extremely subdued within Professor O Morain's class. Mixed with the humiliation she had experienced at the hands of two horrible Gryffindors her outward appearance had changed as well. She no longer wore make up, her hair was being controlled by a simple head band, her five inch heels had been replaced with flats and her uniform was up to regulation. She was still her same bubbly self outside of class just in a simpler package.

Peyton entered the classroom with a quick cursory glance around the room. Still no sign of his brother. He knew the teachers, the Headmistress, and now the new Deputy Headmaster were doing what they could to find Xavier but it had been about a week now and no one seemed to know what was going on, or at least no one was telling Peyton what was going on. He felt so out of the loop, even within his own family. His father refused to talk about it and his mother didn't even know about it. The only other contact he had gotten was from his Grandfather who seemed to be on the case as well now.

He settled into his seat in the middle of the fifth year section of the classroom. He pulled out his battered pheasant quill and began to scratch out a list. He knew he should know more than what came to mind but he was finding it harder than normal to focus on his school work. Never in a million years would he think he would ever be missing Xavier nor would he be this concerned about him.

    Human-Like Creatures
    • House Elves
    • Giants
    • Trolls
    • Goblins
    • Veela
    • Leprechauns
    • Vampires
    • Werewolves

He looked over his list with a slight scowl. Were werewolves and vampires considered creatures? Or even human like for that matter? It wasn't like they were a real race or anything. You weren't born a werewolf or a vampire, you just became one. They were conditions, diseases. Did that classify them as something completely non human? Peyton had no idea but decided to keep them on the list anyway. After all he doubted Professor O Morain would deduct house points for a wrong answer even if he was now the Deputy Headmaster.

Sophie was having a day. At this point it was a draw, she’d done fairly well in DADA but lunch had brought gossip and news that made her sick…and also want to punch people. She was going to push that information out of her brain. She was not going to focus on stupid people or the way they tried to manipulate others. She was just done, it had progressed to the point that they needed to be axed out of her life. She actually had no qualms about doing it either, the girl who never gave up on people was ready to boot more than one out of her life. When she walked through the CoMC classroom door, tightening her ponytail, Sophie realized that everyone was lumped together and made a slight face.

In the back of her mind she felt a knot of dread form in her stomach, Quinn took CoMC, so did Fauna. She missed the latter but not the former. Really she wanted everything to just go back to normal and everyone to stop being so angst ridden.  Sitting squarely in the middle of the room, Sophie pulled out parchment and didn’t give much more than cursory glance to those surrounding her. She and Professor Ó Móráin were on an upswing since the Yeti class, she felt more competent lately and wanted to keep proving that his known bias against Gryffindor wasn’t deserved by every student in the house. Chewing her bottom lip she quickly jotted down:

    Human-Like Creatures
    • Werewolves
    • Vampires
    • Hags

Fauna wasn't all that pleased about a joint class, and she avoided looking at Sophie as she made her way to the back where the seventh-years were seated. She hoped that the professor wouldn't be bringing out any visual aids that would make her sick, because she'd had enough embarrassment for the week. Even people who weren't in Defense or in her year had mimicked her doubling over and barfing, or made gagging sounds whenever she walked past in the corridors.

Students were so considerate like that.

She was relieved when Professor O Morain asked them to write out their answers on a piece of parchment. That was simple enough! The assignment involved no severed arms and she felt confident in her ability to use a quill without making a scene.

Declan waited for everyone to be done, then summoned their parchments. He flipped through them, unsurprised at the lists he had received. The vagueness had been done on purpose. This was exactly the sort of trick question that could be found on their OWLs and their NEWTs.

Only one paper had the right list, but Declan was unsure if the student knew the difference. "Miss Flickwick is the only student to have constructed the right list for human-like creatures. That will be three points to Gryffindor for having the correct answer. The rest of you seemed hit and miss on the subject."

"It is important to note the technical definition of a human like creature," Declan told the class. On the board he wrote down only three: Hags, Vampires, Werewolves. "Many of the creatures that you have all listed have human-like qualities. Thus, in a sense, you have completed the task. But the technical definition of a human-like creature is one that appears to be a normal human being."

"House elves, merpeople, yetis, gnomes- and whatever else you have listed, to do have some human qualities. Mostly they are somewhat intelligent creatures, but not what the ministry qualifies as a human like creature."

Under each of the creatures he had listed on the board, Declan made a bullet point list of their traits.

    Werewolves
    • The term is used to describe the creature when in human or wolf state.
    • There are several characteristics that distinguish werewolves from regular wolves. A tufted tail, snout size, and the pupils of the yes.
    • Condition can be managed by wolfsbane potions, although they are difficult to brew.
    • All trace of human awareness is gone and the werewolf will attack any witch or wizard, including the werewolf's best friends.
    • The condition is spread when a werewolf bites a person.
    Vampires
    • Not considered wizards.
    • Vampire treatment is regulated by the ministry of magic.
    • Hated and feared by many.
    • Part of society to an extent- considering the production of vampire-useful products. Such as blood flavored suckers.
    • Considered to be part-humans.
    Hags
    • Female
    • Wild in appearance, have a harder time disguising themselves to muggles. Considered to be "fairy tale" like witches. The kind that appear in many muggle tales.
    • Have been known to eat children.
    • Frightening and nasty creatures.
    • Not regulated or registered with the Ministry of Magic unless they cause problems with the law.

"I know that in Defense Against the Dark Arts, you learn how to fight these creatures and remain safe should you encounter them. Can anyone give some examples of how to protect oneself or fight any of these?"

Finally, a question that Baxter knew something about! If there was anything that his father had taught him, it was about werewolves. He knew that his dad didn't like them. His hand shot up in the air, and when he was acknowledged, Baxter excitedly repeated the information he had learned from his father and also from his Defense Against the Dark Arts class.

"Werewolves are very resistant to regular magic," he stated. "In muggle tales, they claim that a silver bullet can kill werewolves. This is not technically true. Werewolves do not find silver deadly. Chances are that the bullet itself killed them- any great injury to the heart or serious organ can kill them. Silver, however, can hinder them because they are allergic to it. For this reason apprehended wolves are often chained in silver or put into silver cages. Even in human form, silver can make a werewolf have a rash or be itchy."

"The best defense for a werewolf is to avoid them all together. During the full moon they are dangerous, especially since they don't discriminate over who they bite. If you're attacked by a werewolf- whether it is in human or wolf shape- you can suffer affects from it. If a wolf is trying to attack you, you should kill it if at all possible. If not possible, then best course of action is to get away. Though, since they have heightened senses and are faster, that can be very hard to do."

**Creatures Section of AO states that werewolves are allergic to silver. However, the HP wiki claims silver does not affect them. I'm going to go with a middle ground and state it is not deadly, but does affect them. Just so everyone knows where I am pulling this from.

Josh rolled his eyes. " Fox, not quite. in human form, there are very few effects from a  werewolf attack I believe any wounds will scar and if you are bitten by a werewolf in human form, you can get a liking for very rare steak. In wolf form they are only dangerous if they haven;t tkane wolfsbane, which restores their human mind. I will admit it's not a cure-all for werewolf aggression, since if the werewolf is aggressive as human it won't make the slighrest bit of difference.

As for how do deal with a werewolf attack, you are wrong. your first priority should be escape, not to kill the werewolf. Only if escape is impossible should you attempt to kill the werewolf." Josh said.

Baxter glared at Harcroft. "I never said that it was dangerous to get bitten by a wolf in human form- but depending on the wolf it might be. Fenrir Greyback was just as vicious either form he was in. You still get lupine tendencies. Which would still be suffering an effect. The wounds still wouldn't heal properly, either. Werewolf wounds are cursed and scar over badly and never heal the way a normal wound would."

"Besides, it isn't your place to tell me whether I am right or wrong," the Ravenclaw snapped. Fox was, truly, a know it all. And if he was wrong, then the professor could tell him he was wrong, not some self righteous Gryffindor. "Besides, if you were listening- and you obviously weren't- I said the best course of action is to avoid them so that you do not have to face them at all. And if it is possible to kill them, then you should do it. But not everyone can. I'm only thirteen, I couldn't kill a werewolf so I would escape. But if I could do it, then there would be one less werewolf to deal with. Besides, what my dad says is true- if there were no werewolves left in the world, then the condition wouldn't be spreading."

"And wolfsbane does not make a werewolf a safe person. It only prevents the loss of their human mind. In which case, if a wolf who is on wolfsbane is exposed too much to direct moonlight, or if they are angered, then the potion won't be as effective. If you ever paid attention in Potions or Defense Against the Dark Arts you would know these things."

It wasn't that Baxter had anything specifically against the boy- he just hated it when people told him he was wrong. Especially if they called him out on it in front of a whole class. Especially if he knew that he was right.

Though, since they have heightened senses and are faster, that can be very hard to do.' I was disagreeing about that part. you should try to escape from an attakcing werewolf, not kill it.

As for wolfsbane, who told you it would be made less effective by direct moonlight? that's a myth.As for if they are angered, that isn't the wolf mind taking over, that's the human mind lashing out. In short, wiht wolfsbane, they are no more harmful than any other human.  Fenrir Greyback was dnagerous, yes, but that was because he was insane, not specificaslly due to him being a werewolf." Jish said, he could see how this had occured now. Fox's father didnlt like werewolves, Josh's father didnlt mind them. S0naturalyl ackerly Fox woould have warned his kis away from werewolves, while Josh's father had only warned Josh to avoid werewolves that didn't take wolfsbane.

Ayla copied down the explanation the Professor had put on the board. She understood how she had mistaken the question. It had been rather tricky but in that respect she believed that the Wendigo should be on that list as well given their similarities to werewolves but since there weren't any in the UK she could also understand why Declan wouldn't have mentioned them. Instead she added in what she knew of the creatures.

Her green gold eyes landed on Baxter as he gave his explanation of werewolf safety. While she didn't disagree with him the whole thing made her uncomfortable. She wasn't a member of SAWS but she still didn't agree with the kill first ask questions later attitude most wizards had about Werewolves. She knew they were dangerous, she wasn't an idiot but every other day of the month they were normal human beings it wasn't fair to just kill them over one night a month especially if they were responsible werewolves like Ollie and Lexus.

She watched the exchange between Josh and Baxter, a little surprised about Baxter's inherited views on werewolves. She had promised herself she wouldn't be a bother for Declan anymore but she couldn't ignore this one, "Wolfsbane might let the werewolf keep their human mind but it doesn't stop them from transforming which means they're still dangerous. You can still turn into a werewolf if you get bit by one on wolfsbane. Most werewolves view themselves as being cursed and those on wolfsbane are usually responsible enough to still stay away from people during the full moon but just like there are criminals and dark wizards there's werewolves that are dangerous regardless of the state they're in."

She paused for a moment debating something before powering on, "Lycanthropy will cause even the nicest of people to become aggressive, irritable and rational. That feral animal part of their primal instincts is heightened and ever present. Even in human form or as a werewolf on wolfsbane they're constantly afflicted by that." She thought back to her holidays spent with Lexus, "They'll lash out any moment they're angered and believe me that's not their human side lashing out that's all wolf." She turned to Josh with a soft smile, "And before you throw another text book answer out, that's coming from personal experience. My cousin's a werewolf, she gets pissed off about the smallest thing even as a human and having known her my whole life I know that's not really her it's just part of her condition."
