If yes, what were they and were they convicted?: - Embezzlement – He’s not above taking more than his fair share.
- Improper Use of Magic: Using both magic to disguise and wipe the memory of one Benjamin Wright, causing addition damage to the man.
- Protection Rackets – Usually in an opposite sense. Parts of his organization keep watch over the shops in Knockturn Alley; in exchange for money, the Ministry is kept away via bribery, distraction or other means. Failure to pay will often result in the arrest of a shop owner. Shops of which he directly approves (such as the Black Chimera) he does not interfere with and may fund directly.
- Murder (on his orders) – Vedir has never killed anyone with his own two hands (or wand). He has, however, ordered the…convenient death of others, as the need suits him.
- Improper Import and Export of Goods/Black Marketeering – He has assisted with the movement in and out of the country of magical beasts, objects and substances, usually at high profit.
- Bribery and Blackmail – Bribes many officials in the Ministry and controls many of the school governors either through money, similar ideals or polite threats and blackmail. Controls many of his business interests this way as well.
- Death Eater - Is suspected (correctly) of being a supporter of the Dark Lord during the previous war, and of providing known criminals with money, supplies, shelter and other aid. He denies this resiliently.
----------
He has not been convicted of any of the above, though any Auror with two brains cells to bang together could guess he's guilty of the last one at least and the rest just follows.
What crimes might you commit in the future? Discuss all possible: Any of the above, with feeling.
Are you currently under pursuit by the Ministry of Magic?: No
Wand: 6in, Willow, Runespoor Fang
Physical Description: Vedir is of a good height, standing at 6’2 and is a sophisticated, well-groomed man. He maintains his appearance to an amazing degree; even appearing disheveled and casual will likely be on purpose. His clothes are always formal; one gets the impression he sleeps in a suit and tie (which he doesn’t, but his pajamas are red silk – thank you for asking). He probably spends more time on his appearance than most women and he carefully tailors himself to the situation when given the chance.
He’s going grey a bit early, but does not mind this. He has piercing brown eyes and a handsome face; his beard, a classic anchor and sideburns affair, is accented by some carefully trimmed stubble. His face is starting to gain age lines, but he’s found these make him look more sophisticated. He is currently ok with this and has spells ready for when he’s not. His hair is currently black, cropped short, and well groomed, with some white/grey coming in.
Vedir’s clothing is cut close to his frame and always accentuates his wealth and status. He does not, however, wear extremely traditional dress robes and prefers to stick closer to muggle fashion. His usual dress robes, therefore, resemble a Victorian gentleman’s garb. He will dress for the occasion, however.
His most striking physical feature is not a visible one, exactly; he carries himself and tones his voice in such a way that he projects an aura of power, mystery and assurance. His body language is carefully controlled to give the impression he wants it to give; be it open and friendly, closed or dominating. He is extremely in control of his body, his words and his looks. Very little passes his lips that he has not intended that it’s unsettling in some ways when he talks ‘freely’.
Personality Description: Vedir has, effectively, two sides to himself; his public personality and his private one. His private personality only 3 people, currently, have seen; he divulges his true nature to almost no one. His public personality is what everyone sees and it’s a very carefully cultivated act he keeps up to bring his goals to fruition.
In public, he’s a charming, friendly man. A smooth-talker who throws great sophisticated parties, he plays the politics game with ease. His manner is reserved but with a hit of fun just under the surface; he often seems a man you could follow to find an interesting time. He’s charming even to his enemies but can easily become deadly serious, and lets this show; instead of becoming angry he simply adds a dash of danger, hinting at his inner personality.
He enjoys seduction both in a sexual and more general manner; for him, love is more about the chase and buildup than the payoff and he enjoys ensnaring his prey. His manner gives promises of romance, power, money, status; whatever his prey desires. He has no issue with using others to get his way and when he’s done will happily cast them aside. To lose his interest is perhaps the worst any of his hangers-on can do; for him to become bored with you means freedom, but often means he’s drained you of whatever made you interesting to him in the first place.
Vedir is bisexual and often enjoys the seduction of men more than women, simply because they’re more difficult to charm. He enjoys a challenge and they more than often provide. Beyond that he has no preference, but publicly is straight; his male partners are secrets.
He’s also publicly a purist; as he moves in that inner circle he knows how to dance the lines. Still, he truly has no quarrel with muggles; his blood ties don’t stop him from sleeping with some, certainly.
On the inside, Vedir is fundamentally a control freak. He seeks from his very core to control all around him and hates it when this fails. This is almost an obsession for him and is what truly drives his seduction – he hates people who are somehow free of him and has to find a way, somehow, to get his claws into them. Sex is merely one weapon in his arsenal; his money and power win control far more often.
He’s a sadist, however, and thoroughly enjoys destroying others. He does not do this casually, however; he views it almost as an art, carefully building up the scene and putting all the pieces perfectly in place.
However, if you fall under ‘useful, but uninteresting’ or simply ‘fun’, you’re probably safe. Vedir enjoys long-term friends and is unlikely to attack or hurt these people though he will certainly play with them and set them against each other to amuse himself. He will genuinely like these people, oftentimes, and may even hesitate to throw them into the line of fire.
Towards his family and children he is – surprisingly – relatively loving. While he may not actually like them, he understand their roles and will keep them happy and functional, and for the most part, out of his way.
History: Vedir is very rich.
He didn’t start that way, not exactly. The Prideaux family is a long-lineage Wizarding clan of impeccable breeding, and while that added up for them over the centuries, his grandfather had squandered the family wealth in gambling and had left them their home and little else.
Vedir spent most of his early life with his parents constantly working to amend this and keep their home, which is quite expensive to maintain. Born as the eldest son of the Prideaux family, his father died when he was 9 years old, leaving him with his mother to figure out what to do. His mother was a strict and clever woman, who trained him from an early age to be a cutthroat in both business and personal life. His childhood was a happy one, all things considered, but was as disciplined and strict as most pureblood children’s. She taught him to covet connections and to bolster the family above himself, and above all, seek fortune and pride.
He began attending Hogwarts in 1975, and by that point his mother had recovered enough of their businesses they were out of danger but not in the bank. He did quite well in Slytherin House, finding himself quite at home among the other children of privilege and purity. He made several friends in Hogwarts he retains to this day and did well enough at the school, though he found the environment eye-opening. It was at Hogwarts he first realized what a tool manipulation could be; he used it well, snagging himself Head Boy in his last year and easily keeping his Prefect title, despite his less than rule-abiding activities, for most of the other years. Never one to turn down opportunities, he was never a bully but certainly encouraged the activities of ‘em when it suited him; certainly it did him little harm for having a reputation both as a stainless rule abider and for having nasty things happen to those who crossed him.
During his school years, he was one of many students in his house to support Lord Voldemort. He was smart enough then, and again in the mid 90s, to not ally himself directly with the Dark Lord; instead he offered shelter, supplies and aid to the cause and covered his tracks as expertly as possible.
He entered the Ministry upon his graduation in 1982, taking up a job in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. He got a mid-level desk job, and spent several years cultivating both his career and, more importantly, his connections. He built the family business on the side and once that was providing enough money, he departed the Ministry directly, opting to become a Hogwarts Governor. He keeps his ties in the Ministry to this day.
The family business is completely legitimate, of course – any rumors of…other types of involvement are clearly fanciful. The Prideaux family runs a string of legitimate real estate brokers, law agencies and of course a Hogwarts Governor.
Underneath their…Legitimate exterior, the Prideaux clan is all too happy to dip into the less than pleasant areas of the Wizarding world. Vedir is an entrepreneur at heart and is certainly willing to dip into, as he puts it, “Untested Markets.” His small organization mainly deals with the denizens of Knockturn Alley at this point but he’s been expanding into the main area of the Alley and the Wizarding world itself.
He has little care as to where his money comes from. Working through proxies, he has many business connections in the muggle world, mostly owning stock or shares. (He likes Muggle’s money, but isn’t about to reveal the Wizarding world for that.)
His interesting and passionate personal life is kept a quiet secret, as he is extremely careful about regulation of his public image. He enjoys occasional appearances in the tabloids simply for fun (these usually involve flashy affairs, as he’s known for having a different woman on his arm every party).
The only real notable mishap he’s had in his otherwise smooth operation is his illegitimate child, Georgiana. In the early 1990s he was contacted by a business partner of his, the head of the Egyptian Kanika clan, asking for his help regarding his daughter, Atalana, and her then -14 year old son Tapendra. Vedir agreed to ‘help’ the woman, and paid off the courts to free her from prison (See the biography of Azorma Hyskos for the full back-story on her side.)
He took Atalana and Tapendra into his home and was, for a time, genuinely found of Atalana. However, both his promise to her father – he is, after all, a man of his word – and Atalana’s own pride wore her welcome out; when she became pregnant he decided it was over and began true plans to cut ties. Throwing her own was not an option – it would have been far too public. It had to be something she wouldn’t want to admit happened even to herself, much less others.
Vedir began looking for a way to effectively shatter her perceptions. He knew betrayal was something she could not stand; he first tried her son, Tapendra, despite his normal preference for, well, older prey. Unfortunately for him the boy was a bit too savvy for his own good; he wised up at the last minute. Vedir had to use threats of worse than shame for his mother to keep him quiet – making Tappy one of the few people to be on the receiving end of, or to even see him, when he’s actually angry.
He eventually sought out the boy’s father, the muggle Benjamin Wright. Ben had been released from St. Mungo’s (and memory charmed again) but had never recovered from the effect of Atalana hitting him with a failed Obliviate charm, suffering damage and having the previous 10 years of his life completely wiped. He wasn’t hard to seduce, given his absent-minded state and partier attitude; all that was needed after that was for Atalana to find out about the betrayal of both of her lovers.
Find out she did, shortly after she gave birth to Vedir’s daughter, Georgiana. She snapped, and vanished from England, and he hasn’t seen or heard of her since, though his suspicions that she’s behind the brutal murders of the Kanika clan are correct.
This left him with the two children and a muggle to deal with. Tappy thankfully provided him with a way to get rid of the two kids; while Vedir was somewhat hesitant to part with his daughter, he eventually decided the price was worth it if the boy kept his mouth shut about the whole affair. Tappy took the infant girl with him and left for Cambridge at the age of 17, and the two have not shared a word since. This suits both of them just fine.
That left Benjamin. He was fun for awhile and so Vedir kept him; however, he had served his purpose. The moment he was done with him, the man was quietly removed, obliviated (yet again) and sent back to the muggle world. Only a few people know the full details of this incident and they’ve been paid to keep quiet. The only one not paid off is an extremely wanted criminal who doesn’t care about Vedir’s reputation, she just wants him dead.
In the years that passed he’s settled into his life quite comfortably and is currently seeking a proper marriage, having decided he should get on that sometime. He currently is a known supporter of the Headmistress and thoroughly enjoys his job as governor; the older members of that body are easy to manipulate.
