How did they learn or hone this ability?: Delilah’s abilities come from a family tradition where Afamdis act as voodoo priest and priestesses. She learned her skill from her mother and her grandparents and honed her skills to become a caplata.

Describe how the Special Ability influences their life.  What do they use it for?: Delilah uses occlumens frequently to simply guard her mind, and she uses legilimens to solve problems if she cannot find out the problem on her own. However, legilimens is a last resort to her and she only uses it frequently on her children. She never uses it on someone who is not aware of it, unless extreme circumstances dictate otherwise.

Write a description of what happens when your character is exhibiting this Special Ability: Delilah’s mind is effortlessly and calmly guarded with occlumency, and even if she becomes hot-headed or overemotional she’s still in control and only makes it harder to enter her mind.

Her legilimency skills are also powerful, and she even knows spells to accompany it where she can weaken a person’s mental defenses, however this is only ever used on stubborn muggles who sought out her help in Jamaica.  She performs this skill without a wand and wordlessly, and usually only needs to be near a person or to have her hand on them. She sometimes tries to lure the person into a state of relaxation before she enters a person’s mind, being sneaky about it rather than force her way inside. The most noticeable effect of something that feels like a shiver up a person’s spine, at the back of their skull, and then into their mind.

Physical Description: Delilah Foley is a tall (5' 11") dark chocolate skinned woman with a strong body-frame, wide curves, a long torso, wide hips, long limbs, and a large bust. She has long slim hands, and while her feet are slightly bigger than normal, they are high-arched and also slim. She has dark brown eyes, a well defined nose, thick pouty lips, a strong jaw and eyes that are defined by sweeping shadows cause by the shape of her brows. She looks younger than she is, due to aging slower than muggles, and holds a reserved pride for it. Her long hair going past her butt, that she keeps in tight sister-lock dreadlocks, which is a spiritual and cultural habit passed down in her family.


Delilah usually wears large wraps of all kinds around her body, and wears them modestly, only letting them hug the curves of her body. She is usually wearing sandals and flats, but is sometimes seen wearing boots if she happens to be getting her hands dirty. Her other clothing is usually for work, and are nice dresses that usually mimic the effects she achieves with her wraps, although she is sometimes wearing a nice shirt and leggings. She’s notorious for wearing anything off-the shoulder.


Personality Description:
Delilah is first and foremost a witch who strives to be in balance with the world around her, a habit developed from the magical culture that produced her and their lack of defining what is "right" or "wrong," which doesn't mean she takes up the role of the hero or the villain. Due to her training to be a Caplata (priestess) and family background her spine is thick from discipline and her heart a hard iron from adapting a critical, analytical, rational, and ethical view of the world; these traits make her very aware of the corruption of those around her.

However, Delilah is not without her own opinions and bias. She holds her family in high regard, and so she often turns to them as resources before anyone else and she also holds her own brew of children up to incredibly impossible expectations. This often results in her being a good manager of affairs, but being a severely micromanaging mother. When someone goes after her family, crosses her, or invades her personal boundaries, Delilah can become mercilessly brutal or take on a temper very quickly.

Although, her temper is difficult to bring about, and one must survive her sharp smile and wit before the witch ever even gets close to snapping at someone. She takes someone who annoys her or angers her through slick and harsh forms of humor, often taking on a dark and rhetorical tone before her temper flares; but she will almost always have a subtle and satisfied smile sitting on her lips through the whole ordeal.

At the age of 40, Delilah has not slowed down or taken on the pessimistic personality that can come with age. She loves dancing, clubbing with her friends or her husband, and is very playful; however, as a witch who is completely happy with her husband, she always makes it clear she is taken by another man. 

She is also a lover of dancing and sometimes goes and dances at clubs with friends, or tries and convince Torquil to go with her, and she can be rather playful, although she always makes it very well known that she is married and taken by another man; but she is very capable of reading others and playing their personalities to her advantage due to legilimency and occlumency. She can be rather sly with the skill, sometimes tricking others with complex mind games that strike her as rather simple, and used it spending her single-status youth flirting and seducing men without ever falling into bed with them.

History: The time Delilah was born, Jamaica was in a social limbo teetering on the edge of an collapse and so expectations for the product of those of Afamdi blood were very high. At this time, those expectations rested with her father, Darien Afamdi-Steele, a man who showed absolutely no interest in continuing any of the traditions, secrets, or responsibilities put into place by his ancestors.

Darien was a blood traitor in the highest sense, and hated purebloods and any beliefs that came with them. Coming from a family of purebloods, Darien felt that most of his life roles were forced upon him, and disliked how unequally the relationships between muggles and wizards were. As a result, he believed that his ancestors were foolish and misguided for thinking there was any kind of freedom about the wizards in Jamaican, so he pursued his own selfish goals.

His parents forced him to take on the family role as a Bokor (Priest,) leading to his arranged marriage with a reputable pureblooded Indian immigrant. He fulfilled his duty of having children with the witch, but became abusive towards his wife for her for her views and tradition, and even lashed out against his children. His menagerie of mistresses he acquire over the years who were acquired with either magic or lies, were not much better off than his wife. Muggles became easily depressed, witches cheated on their lovers, and all of their lives collapsed. He even exerted his rage and spite on others in the magical community and attempted to alienate his own pureblooded children from his family and his spouse's family; this was in attempt to stop the family traditions from being passed down and any of the pureblooded traditions with it.

His parents just couldn't compete with his ambitious and hateful nature, and they eventually traveled to South America where they were overcome with an illness and died shortly after their arrival home. Any hope in restoring the Jamaican community was lost with them, and many witches and wizards started to search for refuge elsewhere.

After his parents death his children inherited many of their souvenirs from their travels, and Darien’s other siblings inherited the rest of the Afamdi paraphernalia, despite Darien being the oldest. He believed he was entitled to his family's inheritance, despite how he turned against them and loathed them for most of his life, and he became increasingly jealous  of his siblings and started to attack and steal from them as well.

All of this caused little Delilah to hate her father, and believed his behavior was a direct result of corruption from discarding their ancient family beliefs. She longed for the whispered rumors of how their culture use to be and how respectable her family use to be, and so began to search for a way to end him.

She searched through her and her sibling's inheritance until she finally found a shrunken head, mumbling through a stitched mouth. After cutting the mouth open the head started to speak with the old and jolly wisdom of her grandparents, and she realized that their they sacrificed themselves to bewitch the head, “putting a piece of their brain” into the shrunken appendage, to teach their grandchildren and continue the old traditions in plain sight. Thus, the children began to learn voodoo and Delilah planned to take back their lives.

She learned a ritual that could stop her father down, and managed to pull together all her siblings and find all her father’s illegitimate offspring, (half-siblings,) to perform it. For the next seven days Deli’s Dad suffered from a stroke of bad luck, spells gone wrong, his wand snapping, malfunctioning potions, was disowned by all his lovers and kicked out of the house by his own wife. He was finally almost run out of the community altogether, and it would have only stayed as that if he had not seen all 13 of his children watching him. He instantly tried to blame them and was overcome with an intent to kill them, but was struck by lightning thirteen times and died.
His children then began to reorganize the marketplace and restart the community, and the Afamdi Steele family name was restored to its former glory, and their traditions put back into place.

Delilah was sent to a wizarding school in North America shortly afterwards, and carried on the traditions as the Afamdi family being trained into a skilled caplata and working as a mediwitch in the Phoenix Flame hospital. She had a great reputation as a notorious flirt and tested the limits to which men would go to impress her or win her over, while never giving herself away. If any man dared to force themselves on her then they would find themselves tangled under an impenetrable web of curses.

 Even though she had a very clear limit, she slinked her way into many men’s hearts and riled them into chasing after her—it was thrilling, but after having seen her father live a promiscuous life she entertained herself with playing the game, noting how remarkably short-lived and empty the relationships could be, and how unsatisfying she found them all. This was mostly due to her maturing at a young age, and she wouldn’t be happy until not only an older and more mature man, but a rather inadvertently noble one made his way into her life.

Torquil Foley was that man for her--Unfortunately her sister wanted the Irishman for herself. So while he courted Delilah, both the girls fought over him until finally Delilah took him out for long and enjoyable night of partying and drinking; then she stole Torquil away for herself, and got pregnant in the process.

It wasn’t long until their child started speaking and Torquil found out Delilah was a witch, and they broke into a short fight until they managed to sort out they were both wizards. Afterwards they got married and had two more children before the cost of living became too high for them, and they moved to Ireland. There they had a more stable income, and Delilah began working as a mediwitch at St. Mungos and a physical therapist in her own time.


Describe your job duties and how you go about them:
Healer-in-Charge/Board of Warlocks: Oversees and tends to permanent patients of this floor as well as severe spell damage cases. She also monitors and sometimes participates in the treatment of normal cases of spell damage, just to make sure everything is going well no the floor. She also works with the board to make big decisions in the hospital and in the handling of any large issues. She's one of the more lax and understanding members of the board, looking at a problem from all sides and not just a political stand point.

Therapist/voodoo witch: Delilah utilizes her time she spent in the hospital in Jamaica learning alternative medecines and her skill as a caplata to aid and help wizards and witches in need of physical therapy or are suffering from health problems that cannot be helped by more conventional means. She takes home calls or works in a floor rented out in Diagon Alley. She refers to her job as a spa therapist or just a physical therapist because she uses alternative medecine and voodoo to relieve ailments, and she also wants to downplay the voodoo part of it.

Elaborate on your expertise in your field: From the age of 16 onwards she worked under her mother at the hospital & spa in Jamaica, and apprenticed under her as well, learning many different forms of alternative medecines used and become a very skilled healer, although she sometimes uses very unconventional methods. Under her mother, she was allowed to use these, but it was much more difficult to pull off at St. Mungo’s and she was very limited in what she could do. Eventually, she became a healer-in-charge and was able to run the floor how she wanted, and was eventually elected onto the Board of Warlocks for her proficiency.

She also practiced as a caplata with her other two sisters, to tourists and those seeking help whenever they visited Jamaica. While this aspect of her skills is somewhat skimmed over due to the secrecy of the family voodoo traditions it is known she healed and helped many people with very extreme problems that not many mediwitch or wizards could fix.

Strives for balance, objective, calm, and analytical. Delilah thinks rationally and sometimes several steps aside. She's great at psychologically analyzing someone and uses that for her therapy. However, she has a notorious reputation for being very cross and micromanages her children sometimes.

Bokors (male) or Caplatas (female) in the religion of vodou are sorcerers or houngan[1](priests) or mambo[2] (priestesses) for hire who are said to 'serve the loa with both hands', meaning that they practice both dark magic and light magic. Their black magic includes, but are not limited to, the creation of zombies and the creation of 'ouangas', talismans or fetishes that house spirits.[3]

Delilah's expertise in magic mainly derives from West African Vodun culture that has grown and adapted to life in Jamaica. Her ancestors also branched off to Haiti and they keep close magical ties with them.

Other magic she knows is from attending school in Brazil and a compilation of miscellaneous research and methods gathered by her grandparents from touring the world that continues on through various members of her family.

She keeps many potion ingredients at hand and often creates many fetishes. Besides carrying a wand she uses a staff and bracelet charms for wielding magic.
