Tappy's most notable feature, aside from his nose, is his height; he stands at 6'8, and has long gotten used to ducking through doors. His body is lean, with a thin frame and long limbs. His hands and feet are large as well, giving him the appearance of a boy whose body never quite grew into him properly.

His face is somewhat handsome, in an odd horse-ish kind of way. His face is long, and mostly dominated by a  nose that has barely any bridge at all, essentially jutting out of his forehead and proceeding down his face in a straight, flat line. He has large blue eyes and a sharply defined jawline. When combined with his long neck and broad shoulders, it gives him a look which is not unpleasant, but...odd.

His skin tone is dark with a reddish hue, probably best described as cinnamon. It plays an odd battle with his hair, which is nearly the same color, but with a much redder tint. He has facial hair, having carefully groomed it into a jawline beard, capped with a goatee (a moustache-less anchor, basically). He wears a small pair of oval glasses, perched precariously on his nose, and his dress sense is simple and functional. He prefers Muggle clothing to wizard, as he becomes quickly annoyed with long angel sleeves. He can be typically found in long sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and jeans. His robes, when he does wear them, are simple and largely free of decoration, and he favors the ‘modified suit’ look to traditional robes.

When teaching, he favors a white button up shirt and tie with a vest and a pair of dress slacks. His wizarding nature is betrayed by the vest’s pockets having rather more storage space than should be physically possible, and its slight decorative embellishments.

He prefers to go barefoot whenever possible, simply finding it more comfortable most of the time, though the cold flagstones of Hogwarts have diminished this habit somewhat. When forced to wear shoes, he favors open-toe or thong sandals.

Tappy is a naturally exuberant, kind and warm person. His first impression for many people is a competent but somewhat shy man who’s bursting at the seams with ideas and enthusiasm for his subject, and isn’t really able to understand why people might – dare we say it – find Astronomy boring.  He’s extremely hard to get down and is usually peppy and cheerful, seeing to exude energy day and night. His mind is constantly working, and it shows, often leading him to fidget. Even when stressed or frustrated he is usually chipper, becoming warmly sarcastic. He can become easily absorbed in a task and become forgetful.

When it comes to Astronomy, he is very driven and enjoys scholarly debate – which is a good thing, as the theories and ideas put forth by himself and his colleges certain spawn plenty of that. He has a nearly tangible love for the universe, and finds many of the wizarding practices inadequate, which he is eager to displace in favor of Muggle ones.

As a teacher, he is a little nervous when it comes to dealing with large numbers of students, and can get carried away with his subject, making the students in danger of being lectured – energetically, mind you – to sleep before even getting their telescopes out. If ever annoyed with his class, his usual response is nasty homework – either lots of it, or short papers on subjects the school has little to no reference for outside of his lectures.

He enjoys writing, and has penned (or assisted with) a large amount of non-fiction books, and in off hours can be found working on these volumes.

To family and friends he is caring, warm, and usually the peacemaking party. He is generous with his time, and too eager to take the problems of outers onto his own shoulders while ignoring his own, leading to him being quite self-sacrificing. He is extremely fond and proud of his daughter and sister, and if asked, will happily go on for hours about them. Still, he is good at adjusting his personality to fit those around him, and when comfortable will often let his core of cynicism out. It’s from this core that his passive-aggressive behavior stems, as well as his ability to snark.

In summary, he’s a cheerful, malleable man who needs to just marry Astronomy if he loves it so much.

Birth & Early Life (1976 – 1987)
Born in the tiny town of Abbleby-in-Westmorland, his mother, Atalana Kanika, is a pureblood African witch of impeccable lineage who had a brief affair with a Muggle – Benjamin Wright. She carried Tappy to term, believing him to be her husband’s child; however, when he was born, her transgression was quickly discovered and she was shamed and cast out of her family, and left behind in England. She travelled often with a young Tapendra, moving from friend’s home to friend’s home, not having enough money to buy a halfway decent house but having too much pride to lower herself to living in what she could afford.

During this period of his life, he was made quite aware of his Half-Blood status, and his mother’s own dislike of it. Still, his mother loved him, and it was through her bull-headed stubbornness that he received quite a good starting education. She gave him an original surname as well, to avoid him having to be associated too readily with her own lineage. He learned alongside any of the pureblood children they were living with, and thus learned magical history, theory and law, as well as the piano. He was good and dedicated in his studies even from a young age, and usually a step ahead of his pureblood 'betters'. This didn't endear him to his teachers.

She was often offered help by Benjamin, whom she refused to see after their son’s birth; when they did meet, they usually argued.

His early life was often hectic and somewhat unhappy; they moved often and so he was rarely in same house for longer than a year, and in most places he lived he was made to feel unwelcome.

Early Hogwarts Years (1987-1992)
Tapendra was very happy to leave for the more stable atmosphere of Hogwarts. He liked the school a lot, having been sorted into Ravenclaw. Many of his friends were Muggle-born and Half-bloods, unsurprisingly; his only pureblood friend was Luthas Blair. He became fast friends with the muggle-born Ryan White, and the two of them discovered a love of Astronomy together, leading to a work/friend relationship that’s still extremely strong to this day.

In 1989 his father returned yet again to his mother, while Tapendra was at school; in the ensuing argument she turned her wand on him and blasted gim with a memory charm, causing Ben to forget his family and most of his life. She was swiftly arrested for Improper Use of Magic, and the court case brough his parentage to light. She was resuced from this debacle by Vedir Prideaux.

When he returned home from his 4th year, he found his mother had moved yet again, having been taken in by Prideaux. Tapendra spent a tense summer at Prideaux’s country estate, suspecting his mother’s relationship with the man from the very start. When he expressed such concerns to his mother, however, she often rebuked him harshly for it.

Later Hogwarts Years (1992-1994)
His later years at Hogwarts were hectic; the public revealiation of his parentage made a few students target him and OWLs made studying difficult. Still, the summer of 1993 was not that bad; he and Prideaux slowly came to an understanding, starting with letters over the school year and over the summer Tapendra came to like the man, even respect him somewhat as a father figure.

It wasn’t to last – towards the end of the summer Prideaux’s true intentions revealed themselves and he propositioned Tapendra, coming close to forcing himself on the boy. When Tapendra refused, Vedir torured him with the Crucius Curse to force him to keep quiet about the incident.

It was shortly after his mother revealed she was pregnant. He broke and tried to tell her aout what Prideaux had done, ut his mother dismissed him yet again, refusing to hear him out. Frustrated and angry, he returned to school for his 7th year.

While he was away Vedir struck; finding and having an affair with Tapendra’s father and betraying his mother only days after Tapendra’s half-sister Georgiana was born. Atalana snapped and fled England, vanishing. Tapendra hasn’t heard from her since.

Making a difficult choice, when he graduated from school, Tapendra travelled to Prideaux’s mansion, armed with a shotgun. In an argument that turned violent – leaving Prideaux with scars on his head and a hole in his study wall – Tapendra promised his silence on the issue if Prideaux gave up Georgiana and 100,000 galleons. Vedir, desiring to wash his hands of the whole ordeal, agreed.

Post Hogwarts & Later Life (1994 – 2008)
Tapendra, now with a baby sister to care for, turned to his friends for help. He joined his friends at Cambridge, and he and Ryan White began to assist Ryan’s father, the muggle astronomer George White, with his research and classes at the University of Cambridge. Eventually the two of them attended the school officially, and both received their muggle degrees in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Tapendra struggled greatly at Cambridge; after two failed attempts to pass his GCSEs in 1995, he worked with George White carefully. Feeling none-too-good about it, he had his paperwork faked - as far as any muggles knew, he had passed his GCSEs and A-Levels. On the papers, at least, he passed with good marks, and he managed to get into the college with the Professor's assistance - being more or less hand-held through the entrance process. He had to spend his first two years at the college in intensive study - thankfully for him, his degree allowed him to focus on classes in which he was talented and most avoid those he was not. In the years since, he's worked to ensure he can truly pass these tests, largely out of guilt.

Trying to save as much of the money he'd won from Pridueax as he could, he and the infant Georgiana wound up in a small studio apartment over a bicycle shop near the University campus. Living with his school friend Luthas Blair, the two worked and studied while raising the young girl, Tapendra getting a part-time job in the shop below to help out. He enjoyed the University and the town very much, even with the shadow of recent events very much on his mind. They lived there until early 1997.

During this period Tapendra married his good school friend and childhood crush, Judy Greenburg. Using some of the money he'd saved up and Prideaux's, he bought them a decent house.  Two had a daughter, Cyhirae, born in 1998. The family lived happily for a time, as Tapendra threw himself both into his writing and into educating his daughter and sister from home.

He and White have always had rather controversial feeling towards the Wizarding approach to astronomy; both of them much prefer the muggle approach and philosophy to the average wizards’ “Dumbed-down Divination.” Both found their astronomy lessons at Hogwarts dull and limited, and Tappy feels that he learned more from his fellow student White than he ever did from Professor Sinistra. 

The two of them, along with their colleagues in both worlds, publish quite a few books and articles of ideas; in particular, the two of them are interested in how magic could enhance and aid space travel and colonization, but both feel that idea is a bit too radical to publicly broach, as it would more or less require the outing of the wizard world.

The two of them began writing their theory books at this time as well – this series is simply a ‘translation’ of muggle theories into terms and context wizards can fully understand. Tapendra also writes the children’s version of these books, which are much less math-heavy.

His family life was severely disrupted in 2002 by his wife’s sudden death when Cyhirae was 6 years old. Devastated and saddened, Tapendra withdrew from public life for a time, eventually leaving the home he’d shared with Judy and moving into the home of the Whites at the young Georgiana’s insistence. After a year or so, he quietly rejoined the fray, a little dismayed at how mature his daughter and sister felt they needed to be to cheer him up. By the time Georgiana left for Hogwarts, he was recovered enough to start fully writing again, though he’s never fully gotten over Judy’s death, and the loss sobered him considerably. His energy resurged and he devoted himself back to science after a few years, and made it his goal to teach his daughter as much as possible. He is especially close to her after her mother's death, and pushes her to be the best in all of her studies; even from the young age of 6 he encouraged her to pick up an instrument (the piano at first, and then the violin) and study past her classmates.

He possesses two familiars, more or less; his first cat, Ludicrous, was given to him by his mother when he started school. This old, fat and strangely flatulent cat now serves as the familiar to his sister, Georgiana. In return for this, his sister gave to him a small half-Kneazle kitten, whom he named Kepler.

With Cyhirae now attending Hogwarts, he jumped at the chance to teach there when the Headmaster announced the position open; both due to his desire to teach, and his worries of having his daughter and sister in the school with the rumors and chaos currently surrounding it.

Hogwarts (Jan 2009 - Present)
Since joining the school at the end of Christmas break, the students have continued to surprise him - both in good and bad ways. After Callum Knight stormed from his first class and the first year's lack of knowledge proved disheartening, he slowly found a comfortably medium and squelched any protests - in class, anyhow.

During a routine visit to the staff room, he encountered Graham Bombay, then professor of Herbology; given their relationship in school, a tense moment followed, which wasn't the least bit lightened by the arrival of the strict Ignan Storm. Tapendra removed himself from the situation.

After a surprise and chance encounter lead to Trishna and Storm going drinking, Tappy was introduced to Johann Storm, Ignan's cousin, and Cillian Cuthbert. The evening was quite enjoyable, though the awakening was rather rude.

After this night, he found himself swiftly becoming friends with the elder and much more dour Storm; this was accelerated when the two of them were called upon to head into the Forbidden Forest in search of Sasha Schlagenweit and the murdered Ava Grosvenor.  His own recent positive encounters with Schlagenweit doubled his distress at the situation, though being told to carry the messy body also had a lot to do with that.

February was a much more pleasant month; Tapendra was reunited with his old friend Dolly St. James and wound up sleeping with her, to his guilt. She and he also attended the Hogwart's Valentine's ball together. He and Ignan grew closer when Ignan was splintched during a class and required quick action to see him to the Hospital Hut, which Tapendra happily provided. Later that evening Tapendra was introduced to Georg Kirchlehner, one of Ignan's oldest friends and the new Charms professor.

March, however, was not to be the same. After the pleasant party to celebrate Tapendra's 33rd birthday on the 5th, Tapendra got bad news. On the 10th, he and Ignan learned that Ignan was in fact his mother's lover - and Ignan informed Tapendra of his mother's death. After a short period of standoffish-ness, the two tutored Sasha together, where Tapendra met Dreogan Eleor. On the way to St. Mungos afterwards, he also met Jacoba Schlagnweit.

Dolly was not doing well - having lost a friend and herself been injured in the March 11th werewolf attacks - and after visiting her in the hospital and feeling rejected due to her actions towards Dominik Wiedman, Tapendra left, tired and depressed. He attended the staff meeting that afternoon and fell asleep during it, which won him no credit with the Headmistress.

A few days later, he was contacted by Jonas Trevelyan. Trevelyan came to visit him at the school on the 20th, where he panicked Tappy with news that his mother was alive and had tried to kill Adon Eleor and Vedir Prideaux. Falling apart, Tapendra rushed to Ignan for guidance, and the older man agreed to aid him.

Still shaken, Tapendra chose to the take the weekend off, returning home to Cambridge. Ignan came and found him on Sunday, and Tapendra chose to tell him the story behind his hate of Vedir Prideaux.


Describe your job duties and how you go about them:
As the professor of Astronomy, it’s his job to teach students about the stars. He has plans to branch deeper into math and theory than is usual for Hogwarts, and present Muggle theories as well as Wizarding ones.

Elaborate on your expertise in your field:
He feels he is qualified for the position, based on these criteria;
1)   He excelled in OWLs and NEWTs in the subject in question and related sciences;
2)   His work in the scientific community, including extensive writings and theories;
3)   His experience as a professor’s aide, and working with students and post-graduates;
4)   His published and practical work teaching young children, the fruits of which can be seen with his daughter, and he’s sure you’ll agree she’s extremely bright and talented.
5)   He’s not a sticker for tradition, and is always willing to update his lessons as new facts present themselves, thus keeping students always learning current information.
