Physical Description: John Flickwick is good looking and the only real problem with that is that John knows that he's good looking. Looking like the perfect combination of a dark skinned woman and a rockstar, John has an alluring quality about him that has worked well for him. At Hogwarts, he was always popular with girls and was a school-renowned heartbreaker, always preferring to date above his age and having numerous liaisons with graduated girls over the summers. His handsome face and rich skin, mixed with deep brown eyes and nice lips, has always been his round trip ticket in and out of trouble. John has dark brown hair that is untamable, curly, and wild as can be with a slight poof to it. He rarely has it cut and only does so when it becomes unbearable to listen to his mom rant about him looking like a homeless person. She even threatened to cut it before and chased him around the house with a bowl and scissors until he locked himself in his room and swore to the high heavens he’d get it cut himself. She had only been joking, of course, but John didn’t want to take his chances. Both of his parents being of different skin tones left John was a warm, olive glow to his complexion. His eyes are a deep chocolate brown. John often looks tired from his late nights or in some sort of daze unless he’s playing music, which seems to be the only thing that drags him from his constant stupor. He stands at six foot and weighs a fit and healthy weight with an athletic build he’s created for his lady friends - Merlin forbid it’s the cause of anything involving hard work.
Things aren’t all sunshine and rainbows about John’s appearance. He has to take good care of himself of he would end up fat like his uncle. John’s family passes down a trait of bad skin through their line so he always has to make sure to scrub his face every night or he’d wake up with pimples. Even drunk and stumbling he’ll find his way into the bathroom to wash his face and get ready for bed (and take a leak) – but that doesn’t always mean he finds his way back out and usually passes out in front of the sink, wash cloth and soap in hand. He exercises regularly to avoid putting on weight, mainly doing upper body exercises since he decided that girls aren’t exactly going to be checking out his legs. John’s style is casual, somewhat of a rockstar look. John usually is seen with scuffles, rarely known to shave his face but he keeps it trimmed and presentable. The only time he’s really clean shaven is on holidays especially going to church or when he was still at Hogwarts. As far as his clothing, he doesn’t go over the top but he dawns the traditional plain white tee shirt with a colorful grouping of tattoos poking out from underneath. Most of his tattoos have meaning, although he isn’t beyond getting a tattoo for no real reason. The most notable tattoos would be a seductive and rather busty water bearer on his left arm, colorful Mexican sugar skulls on his right, two fighting snakes, the numbers “91.93.93” under his wrist in simple black text, a English flag, an American pin-up girl, the name “Cassandra” on his back near his shoulder, a giant and very detailed gryphon on his back, a dragon going up his left side, a traditional tattoo with a heart and the word “Mom” on his chest, an Aztec jaguar, and a guitar pick between his thumb and index finger. His most recent would be the tattoo of a coyote on his right side. Those would be his more noticeable if he was bare-chested. There are other small tattoos worked into the larger ones to create an awesome blend of color and images. He has a story for each of them, or at least what he can remember from that night.
Personality Description: “There are two Johnnys, did you know that? It’s true - I’m his kid sister so I should know right? See there is the guy that everyone else sees, sometimes morose, kind of moody, self involved, smug… but I know that isn’t who he really is. The person he really is brought home Gunner after my kitten died, the brother who built a fort in my bedroom to keep us safe from scary storms when I was little, the person who, without fail, is never too busy to come home when I’m lonely. I don’t know why he does all that other stuff, but I know at the heart of it my brother loves us more than anything in the world and there won’t ever be a time that that changes” – Sophie Flickwick, sister
John doesn’t have a lot of great qualities about him aside from his appearance. The single most openly good quality would have to be his dedication to his family. He’s fiercely loyal to his family, close with both his parents, and shares a deep and unbreakable connection to his sisters. There aren’t many people that John would stick his neck out for, the amount outside of his family he could count on one hand easily, and he isn’t known for his loyalty to friendship or the ability to maintain good and healthy relationships with people. There have been instances where his loyalty to his friends have came after his libido and where the lines of the good thing for John and the morally righteous thing become too blurred for him to tell the difference. Friends come and go in his line of work and so do lovers and girlfriends alike, but his family has stuck with him and lived with him. Growing up in a loving household with two parents that really understood him, or at least most of his actions, turned him into the happy adult he is. His sisters provided him a sense of authority and responsible that he needed in his life and also created a strong feeling of protectiveness over their wellbeing, whether it was emotional or physical.
John’s relationship with his mother and father had always been on good terms. There were rough patches when he was growing up and it created some tension between his mother and father for a time. John started staying out late, not coming home at all, partying a little too much and it created some stress for his mother, who in turn partially blamed his father for John’s wannabe rockstar lifestyle. John’s father hadn’t seen much of a problem with John’s behavior when he was younger and growing up, John never possessed many restrictions. He was the oldest of the Flickwick children and was born to young parents and with their progressive thinking methods of giving him “freedom” and letting him “learn from his own mistakes” – a tactic which backfire rather harshly when John became out of control. He grew up with no real consequences for his actions, and no punishments until he started going to Hogwarts and he was expected to act a certain way and do things a certain way. This childhood has led him to make a lot of exploits with women and live a very carefree lifestyle. He has no real ambition for anything except playing music and paying his rent (which is usually a week late anyways) and it’s something that drives his mother crazy with frustration. His father and John have a special connection, they play music together on stage and spend a lot of their free time with each other writing music and just playing. They always shared a chemistry with each other which made John want to be more like his father, and even want to fulfill his father’s own ambitions of becoming a musician.
“John Flickwick – yes, I remember him. He had remarkable talent; John was a very sharp young man. He possessed a great deal of hidden potential that he just refused to let shine through. It was a real pity he didn’t try harder than he did while attending school. John only real problem was that he wouldn’t put down that damned guitar – professor’s aide
Believe it or not, John is really quite intelligent. He’s quick witted and clever, but instead of using his brains for solving solutions and writing novels, John uses his wit to keep him out of trouble. John never really applied himself in school and spent his time involving himself in social activities, like playing games or playing music with his friends. He was always late to class, never study but always managed to get good grades, procrastinated until the last minute and scribbled down some things on to parchment paper and still received at least an E on his essays. If he had ever applied himself, John could’ve been in the Minstry of Magic working a corner office position as an exceedingly young department head (he shudders to think of such a place) or living a life of excitement and adventure as an accomplished auror (which he thinks sounds like far too much work for such a meager pay check) but he instead found himself going from tavern to tavern, playing late night acoustic songs or jamming with his friends’ numerous bands in their houses, even playing alongside his dad on stage. John would much rather use his intelligence to get around doing meaningless labor, not doing meaningless labor with his great intelligence. That just sounds silly.
History: Everything started in a church. Well, no, everything started in a bed. No, still not right, everything did start with vomit though, for sure. After Duncan Flickwick vomited into the lap of Ramona, his future wife, they were destined for love. She had started to go to his shows which turned into having drinks at the bar after gigs which eventually led to them in the sack, which also eventually led to Ramona becoming three months pregnant on the morning of her simple but tasteful wedding to Duncan. Besides from the intense love and, according to Duncan, kinship that Ramona and John’s father share, once Ramona was discovered pregnant, marriage seemed the obvious decision. Coming from two Catholic families, marriage was encouraged. Despite this, Duncan and Ramona had always planned to one day, eventually, get married and have a family together, but they never could have anticipated that day coming much sooner than they thought. They remained happy though and like they always did, the couple persevered even when things looked their bleakest. Ramona kept Duncan grounded and Duncan loved Ramona – his anchor to the Earth. John Samuel Flickwick was born to two young parents who embraced their son with all the love possible, but like all new parents, had no idea what to expect from such a little bundle. They vowed they wouldn’t be like their parents, allow John to make his own choices and do what he felt was right, to instill in him to values of freedom of expression and freedom of choices, and to promote him to learn from his own mistakes. Such rules allowed John to live his childhood with almost no rules and even less consequences or punishments. It created a wild child – John climbed trees (and often fell from them), chased neighborhood girls, wrestle with his father and fight with his friends. What may have seemed cute when John was small grew out of control as he got bigger and created more havoc. What finally laid down some foundation for maturity was when he had little sisters to look after. John calmed down some, shouldering some responsibility for once in his life, and tried to be the best brother he could be.
John had started playing music from a young age. He would often sit outside with his father and their family friends and listen to them play on the sidewalk. With such a chaotic and busy household, John and his father shared their male bonding experiences through music. They had their alone time in the evenings when John learned how to first song, or the afternoon that his father taught him how to read sheet music. It wasn’t just guitars that John learned; music fascinated him and consumed his thoughts. It was like a drug – once he learned to play, the boy was hooked for life. He spent his allowances (when he received it) on old big band trumpets and drum sets, he spent his time writing songs and going to public forums to listen to the bands play. After he started Hogwarts, John’s life took a change and he found himself expected to do what was asked of him in a certain way, and if he didn’t do as he was told, he faced consequences. It was a shock to his life and caused him to act out throughout his school career, choosing to rebel and lass out instead of excel in his studies. John didn’t appreciate being told what to do, not in the least bit, and all it did was force him to reject school. He did his work but never loved it, it was always done half-heartedly and last minute. The only reason that John stayed in school at all was because his mother would have had a stroke if he left. He thought Hogwarts was boring and wasn’t a challenge, so he simply didn’t care. Any essay he set his mind, he received the highest marks. It was a cause of frustration in their home; especially felt by Ramona, that her son wasn’t living up to his potential. There were some tense years, years of arguing between the son and mother, but even more tension between Duncan and Ramona. Duncan avoided the subject at all costs, and Ramona partially blamed Duncan for John’s behavior and attitude. As John got older, he learned how to manipulate and smooth things over with words. Instead of using his intelligence for positive things like school and his exams, John used it to avoid trouble.
John left school and immediately joined his father’s band. Although he’s apart of several different bands, some more so than others, he enjoys playing alongside his father the most. John sometimes performs solo acoustic songs at pubs. He moved out as soon as he could and still struggles to get by on a musician’s wage. He still spends a lot of time at home and he can often be found sleeping in his old bedroom instead of at his loft apartment in the seedier part of London, especially since he prefers his mother’s home cooked (and free) meals in comparison to a bowl of beer nuts and a pint for dinner.
