Wand: Mateo weilds a ten inch Maple wand with a unicorn tail core. The shaft is smooth and supple. The wand was purchased at Ollivanders the summer before his first year at Hogwarts.
Physical Description: Mateo has always been a tall slender young man, although within the last few years he's started to fill out more, his shoulders broadening and his muscles toning. Standing at six foot two Mateo easily towers over most of his classmates and even some of his Professors. His height makes him easy to spot in a crowd and offers him an air of confidence that compliments his calm and calculating nature.
Mateo believes strongly in personal hygiene and having a well groomed appearance. He keeps his dark brown hair long around his ears and chin and often swept back. His modest goatie gives him the classic spaniard look that his skin is missing and is always trimmed neatly and groomed daily. Mateo is paler than most of his siblings but the family resemblance is unmistakable.
Much like his hair Mateo's clothes are always well groomed, his school uniform pressed and worn exactly to regulation. Whenever not in uniform Mateo does his best to dress for success, although not as focused on fashion as his cousin Fergie, Mateo knows how to look impressive in a simple polo shirt and slacks.
Personality Description: Mateo is calm, cool and collected, always facing obstacles with the most logical of solutions. His mind working out as many possible outcomes to a situation before deciding to act. Due to this Mateo often makes the ideal leader being able to wrangle multiple types of personalities in a way that makes everyone happy.
Although very intelligent Mateo isn't exactly the model student. As calculating as he is he's found certain subjects, mostly those that require more hands on work, like Charms, Care of Magical Creatures and History of Magic to be troublesome. However he does excell at Potions, Herbology and Arithmancy. School is very important to him and he hopes to go into work at the Ministry once he's graduated.
Due to his calculating nature Mateo does struggle with social situations. Not to say that he isn't friendly. Mateo has many friends and enjoys spending time with them as long as it doesn't interfere with his schoolwork. It's the clam logical approach he has to emotional situations that can cause him to come across as offputting and in more extreme cases heartless.
Having been raised in a house with a father from a traditional family and an eccentric mother Mateo managed to pick up on more Amherst traits than those of his mother's family. Being the baby of the family meant that Mateo was picked on more than the others but it helped him to become immune to such meanderings he might be subjected to at school. It has also helped Mateo become more adept to duelling given the fights he got into with his older bothers and sisters.
Mateo believes that behind every good man is a better woman. With this philosophy in mind Mateo has found that now being of age and near graduation the opposite sex has become more appealing and has been trying to pursue more romantic relationships than ever before. Although he has yet to find the better woman to his good man.
History: Mateo Paulo Amherst was the last of the Amherst children to be born. With six years between Mateo and the next youngest Amherst, Gabriel, he is often considered to be the 'oops' baby (although his parents would never say so) Being the baby of six children, especially with the age gap between Mateo and Gabriel, it wasn't hard for him to get attention. However Mateo was never one for being doted upon and often tried to differ the attention onto one of his other siblings, which wasn't hard with how often Margo acted out. Although Wulfric and Ines raised their children to be more liberal Mateo was taken under his grandmum's wing. Arsinoe saw Mateo as a way to rectify how the other children were raised.
Arsinoe stepped in when Mateo was five. With the rest of the children off to Hogwarts, Camila and Raul already graduated and off to their start their own lives, Arsinoe saw the chance to raise Mateo like the proper pureblood that he was.
Mateo attended private tutoring with Arsinoe and often spent time with his cousins Marmaduke and Ferguson. He got along well enough with both of his cousins, more so than he did with most of his own siblings given the age difference between all of them. The following six years Mateo became his grandmother's shadow following her to every social and charity event that required her presence. He learned how to act, speak and what was appropriate to talk about. Mateo was soon seen as the perfect pureblooded son much to his siblings dismay. During summers in Spain Mateo was often picked on by his older siblings. One of their favourite thing to tease him about was the fact that he was paler than the rest of them and it was often hinted to that he was 'the milkman's baby'.
Although he was only seven when the Second Wizard War started he was very much aware of what was going on and the implications made within the whispered words made by Death Eater's wives. Mateo however always believed that the Dark Lord would be defeated based solely on statistics and numbers.
Thankfully Wulfric and Ines' liberal views on pureblood life helped Mateo gain a better perspective on the teachings Arsinoe had offered him and so when it was time to board the Hogwarts express Mateo was the perfect gentleman but didn't view himself as being better than anyone else solely based on his blood. Mateo was proud to have been sorted into Hufflepuff and was quick to make friends within his own house however found that making friends amoungst the other houses proved to be harder. It was solely based on the little amount of interaction he had with the other houses, just seeing them in classes wasn't enough for Mateo to develop adequate friendships.
As Mateo moved through school he found that many subjects proved to more difficult than he suspected they would be and despite many long nights of vigorous studying he just couldn't get his head around certain subjects and when he received A's, P's and even a T on his OWLs he was more than eager to drop the subjects that had become troublesome. He figured it would look a lot better on his transcript if he had E's and O's without a single P or T in sight.
Mateo became more dedicated to his studies once he was taking classes that were better suited to him and he became active in many extra curricular activities. Although his strategic mind was ideal for Quidditch he didn't have the athletic prowess to match it and only played on the team for one year.
Now in his final year at Hogwarts Mateo is focusing on his future while still trying to get as much as possible out of his Hogwarts experience. Which has caused Mateo to gain a brand new interest in the opposite sex finding that he's got enough extra time at the moment to pursue more romantic endeavors. Although there's still many things left to do while at Hogwarts Mateo's trying to groom himself to get a job at the Ministry once he's graduated.
How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Although his pureblood upbringing groomed him perfectly to be put in Slytherin it was his father's laid back nature and his mother's eccentric personality that instill enough loyal and true qualities within him that the sorting hat eventually settled on Hufflepuff. Mateo gets along with most of those in his house and has a harder time getting along with those not in his house. He's loyal to his friends and his house making him the ideal Hufflepuff.
Writing Sample: Sum up your character in one paragraph: Mateo is a calm, cool and calculated young man that acts like the perfect gentleman. He uses a logical approach to most things in life which has gotten him in trouble at times with those that think he's cold hearted for not reacting more emotionally. He's loyal and true to his friends even though he finds it harder to get to know those in the other houses. Mateo is very involved in school and wishes to someday work for the Ministry of Magic.
