Midterm: Muggle Studies

Directions:

Please answer the question appropriate for your student’s year and answer it in essay form.  You may choose to be creative for extra points and do a short introduction roleplay of your students beginning to write the essay and delve a bit into their thoughts on the assignment, the class, midterms in general, or anything else they might be thinking about.  However, the bulk of the assignment is the essay your character turns in.  Please use the quote option to separate your essay text from a roleplay.

For Fifth and Seventh years exams Wikipedia can be a great basic resource.  Please do not cut and paste any text directly from a website.

If you have any questions please send me a PM.

Third Years:

1. Using the images in this album describe what a day might be like in a Muggle household.  Correctly identify them and explain how are these appliances used?  How might life have been different before the creation of these items?

Fifth Years:

1. Choose one country from the Amazon Region of South America.  Briefly describe the effects colonization had on this area taking into consideration cultural changes.  How does this continue to impact this region?  What do you think should be done, if anything, to preserve cultural diversity?  Please explain your answers in detail.

Seventh Years:

1.  Please review the following lesson.  Please design your own mask and in an essay describe how it might be used, what it represents, why you chose the colors you did, and what materials you would craft if from.  Please explain your answers in detail.

~ What is Professor Fraiser’s least favorite Muggle appliance?

Erin was worried.  She had just recently gotten into the class, and though she had studied muggles made entirely too many things out of metal for her to do anything but look at the pictures.  Her prayers seemed to be answered, since Professor Fraisier decided to make their mid-terms based on photographs.
The first two items are a Wash-hair and Dry-hair.  Muggles use these devices every morning to wash and dry their hair.  Muggles typically wash and dry their hair first thing in the morning, and would use these appliances to do so.  If their hair isn’t completely dry after using the dry-hair, they then use their hot air machine in photo 2.

Erin stopped, and looked up.  Chewing a bit of her quill, she struggled to remember what a hot-air machine was used for.  Deciding that her best guess was as good as anyone else’s, she resumed writing.

The hot air machine functions both as a muggle drying charm and is used by politicians in their speeches.  I have read many muggle newspapers claiming their politicians were blowing hot air, and this is the machine they use to do it.  Politicians can be seen making these speeches on the felly-vision, seen in photo 3.

Erin struggled to remember what felly-vision was used for.  Really wishing for her textbook, Erin then noticed something else.  Deciding that she would just have to make do with what she had for number three she went on to the next question.

The item in number 4 is a laptop.  Muggles use this as a giant key ring of some kind, since it contains a keyboard.  It also has blinking lights.  Usually the lights are green too, which is my favorite color.  Unfortunately, like most things taking ekeltricity, it does not work at Hogwarts.  Another machine that uses ekeltricity is the wake-up machine, seen in photo 5.  Muggles use ekeltricity to heat a liquid to a high temperature, and place an extremity on the glass for an extremely brief period of time.  Their reflexes cause them to move their extremity quickly, and that quick action gets their heart pumping, and allows them to wake up faster.  Alternatively, a small percentage of muggles drink and spit out the concoction to wake up.  That method is not as popular, since the stuff tastes like mold grown in the bottom of a potion cauldron.

Erin was rather proud of what she knew about that last one.  She had the unfortunate experience of drinking that vile liquid once, and promptly vowed to never do it again.  Wondering why people would subject themselves to such torture, Erin looked at the remaining few photos.  Realizing she was running out of time, she tried to group the last few photos together.  Finally remembering she had seen them on the same page in her text book, Erin started writing frantically.

The last photos are all pictures of muggle cooking tools.  The heating elements are shown in the 6th and 8th photo, and the 7th photo shows  an overpowered stirring rod, called a blend-hair.  Contrary to its name, it has nothing to do with hair.  Apparently, muggles use that instead of self-stirring rods to assist in preparing their potions food.
Glancing once more at the time, Erin cursed.  She had no clue what Proffesor Fraiser’s least favorite appliance was.  Since she had to guess anyways, she figured she might as well.
The Odd Fin.
There were less than thirty seconds remaining in this exam.  Erin cursed.  She had absolutely no-time to revise.

Percy Dervish settled at his "fortress" in the Muggle Studies classroom.  He had spare quills, a filled inkwell, and several extra parchments at the ready.  Everything was stacked neatly in its place and all easily accessible, but somehow it made Percy feel more secure in his surroundings.  It was as if the entire outside world and its uncertainties were shut out for Percy.  He felt safe in the environment of the classroom and Professor Fraiser had always made it a comfortable one.

The Amazon is a moist broadleaf forest which covers territories belonging to nine nations.  Recently, the Amazon Rainforest was advocated as a candidate to become one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.  It is a vast and glorious...

Percy went on and on about the Amazonia, because it fascinated him.  However Percy quickly got himself and his essay back onto track in discussing Guyana as the region of the Amazon.

Guyana is one of the nine nations which make up Amazonia.  The British assumed control of Guyana in the late 18th Century...

The bookish Ravenclaw seemed to be an absolute information fountain and poor Professor Fraiser was going to have a lot of reading when he neglected to put a page limit on an essay question.

Normally Muggle Studies was one of Ayla's favourite subjects. Being a Half Blood that was raised muggle, Ayla excelled in the class and she figured many of the subjects they covered were ones that she would have learned had she gone to a regular muggle public school back home. Unfortunately like anything he was involved in Callum had managed to ruin Muggle Studies for her. The horrible rumors he had spread about her trying to seduce Professor Frasier had kept the pixie of a girl from even being able to look her Professor in the eye.

Slipping into the room without a fuss Ayla pulled out her parchment and quill and got right down to work, an unusual work ethtic for the normally bubbly and social Hufflepuff but it kept her from having to look up at Professor Frasier.

A day in a muggle household really isn't that different from one in a magical household. The biggest exception of course being the lack of magic. However this hasn't stopped the muggle from living a life of convenience and ease. Technology has advanced so rapidly in the last twenty years that muggle life can often be a breeze. The most menial of tasks are often taken care of by electronic gadgets and machines that do all the work for them. In this day in age all across first world countries it's rare to see a household that doesn't hold at least one of the following muggle appliances.

The washer dryer combo are mechanical devices that muggles use to wash their clothes. The washer is usually either a top loading or front loading device. Clothes are put into the machine with some laundry detergent and the mechine is turned on. It then fills with water and using a spinning circle that is often aided by a built in oscillater, it washes the clothes. Once the clothes are washed they're then placed in the dryer. The dryer is usually a front loading device with a spinning compartment. The dryer spins the clothes while puming in hot air to dry them. Before the washer and dryer were invented muggles washed their clothes in a basin of water or a stream, using a washboard to scrub out any stains and hung them to dry.

The hair dryer is a device of convience. The handheld device is plugged into the wall and once turned on blow moderate to hot air. Women often use the device for personal use. After a shower and with the help of a brush women will use the blow dryer to dry and often style their hair. Before the hairdryer was invented muggle let their hair air dry. For styling purposes pins, wraps and ribbons were used to perfect the proper style in long tresses before hairdryers were invented.

The Television is one of the most common electronic devices found in a muggle home. The devices uses radio waves to project images and sound. The television or TV, is often used to as a form of entertainment. With the aid of added devices such as a DVD player or a game console the TV can also be used to transmit other images and sound not brought in through satelite or cable. Before the TV muggles were often entertained by the radio and before that live theatre was a main source of entertainment.

The laptop is a compact portable version of a Computer. The latest generation of muggles have been increasingly seeking ways to make things easier and on the go. The laptop is one of the answers to said quest. Being able to perform nearly all the tasks that a large clunky destop computer can the laptop is used mostly by businessmen and students but have wide appeal to most consumers. Before the computer was made compact it was large clunky and fit on the top of a desk. The first ever computers were as big as an entire room and had no real general life applications.

The coffee maker is a device that allows muggles to make coffee in their own home. After putting grounds in the top and filling the tank with water the machine heats up the water and pours it through the grounds in a perculating fashion that drips the coffee into the pot underneath. Before the electric coffee maker was invented muggles simply brewed the coffee themselves by either boiling water in a pot or pan and adding the grounds in later or before the water was boiled. Much like most appliances the electric coffee maker is a device used to make muggle lives more convient although to be honest coffee is disgusting the device should be abolished.

The electric or gas stove is another appliance that is found in almost every muggle home. The device allows muggles to cook their food using either electricty for heat or gas. Most stoves have two functions, burners on the top allow muggles to cook in pots and pans while the main part of the oven allows for baking and broiling. Most muggles now use the electic version as gas stoves have often been considered unsafe giving the high flammability of the gas used. Before stoves were made electric they were made from stone and used actual fire to cook food, the main function of an old fashioned fireplace.

The blender is yet another appliance of convenience. Food is placed into the glass or plastic container. A blade is fitted in the bottom of the container and once turned on the blade spins at high speeds to slice up whatever has been placed inside. The most common use of the blender is to make pureed products like baby food or smoothies. Before the blender was invented food had to be sliced, diced and mushed by hand using all sorts of different hand held devices, like knifes, peelers and mashers.

The toaster is the final appliance of convience pictured. The electric device is used to heat up or toast bread. The standard model of toaster allows for two slices of bread. The bread is inserted into the top, the switch is then pushed down and once the toaster reaches a set temperature it pops the toast out of the device. Modern day toasters are also used for convenient muggle food products like pop tarts, toaster struedel and pancakes. Before the toaster was invented muggles used fire to toast their bread. I've also heard that this damnable device is the bane of Professor Frasier existence.

Ayla sighed and dropped her quill chancing a glance up at Professor Frasier. She was sure she'd be getting an O on this one. Muggle Studies was probably the only mid term she was going to pass this term.

Another midterm. Despite being a good student, Grace silently admitted to herself that she was looking forward to her work being done for the semester.

She put the finishing touches on her essay and neatened the little booklet that she was going to hand in, complete with a drawing of her mask. Not the most artistically designed, but it was well enough to get across what she was going for.

Grace took a moment to reread some of the essay.

My mask would be crafted in such a way that in one instance, you can wear it and it looks like a lion and in the other instance, if you turn it upside down, it will resemble a swan. Ideally, this mask would be made of wood and intricately carved to weave these two likenesses so seamlessly, that they have their distinct looks. Ivory might also be an ideal material to use or if one wished, it could be use to enhance the wood features. At any rate, the mask would be easily interchangeable between the swan and the lion.

Ever the perfectionist, she was looking for areas to improve. She worried that portions of the essay seemed disjointed, but that might have been attributed to her trying to combine two very different animals and a lot of ideas in one mask.

If one wished to introduce color to the mask, the best choices would be yellow, orange, white,  brown and black. These are all colors that bear likeness with these two animals. Yellow is symbolic of optimism and happiness. Orange represents warmth and energy. White showcases purity, cleanliness and mental clarity. Brown means stability, reliability and approachability. And finally, Black is authoritative and powerful.

In some way, these colors all embody what would be most ideal for this mask. The duality of the swan and the lion would allow this mask to be used for healing and to summon courage.

One of the pages of her packet also contained a chart depicting the distinct characteristics between the swan and the lion. Looking them over, Grace believed that they worked well together.

SWAN
Fluidity
Intuition
Dreaming
Emotions
Creativity
Love
Grace
Balance
Purity
Beauty
LION
Royalty
Bravery
Justice
Wisdom
Courage
Balance
Authority
Command over subconscious

Realizing that she would exhaust herself by trying to be too perfect, Grace headed off to hand her paper in.
